I tried the deep dish pepperoni pizza for the first time at PizzaPapalis--the same place that got me hooked on their seafood combo pizza when I first moved to the Midwest. What made it even cooler was learning that their wheat dough packs extra protein. I felt like I ate healthy, lol! To be honest, I kind of ordered the Italian beef calzone on accident. The host was very nice and showed me the options for a quick-to-make takeout meal, but I panicked a little bit and went past the mini-pizza and salad lunch combo on the menu. We had just finished with the art museum and still had to get back to dress up for a late afternoon wedding. The calzone proved to be the right selection for a couple of reasons. First: it was good. An Italian beef calzone eats like what I'm pretty sure a Philly cheesesteak pie is supposed to taste like. So...so...yummy. Great filling portions among the beef, the pickled peppers, and the mozzarella cheese.I don't eat too many of these giant turnovers, but I appreciated that the house Italian dressing and cheese covered the entirety of the interior. So even if one of my last bites didn't contain much of the premium beef, I wasn't just biting into the folded over crust. That brings me to the next reason - I stretched this football of an entree into a lunch (ate half for the quick bite before the wedding) and two late night snacks (about a quarter for each go). It reheated well both times. I guess our Google search won this round. I wanted local Toledo pizza and this spot seems to provide a big community service for the college kids and minor league baseball attendees that know how to fill up before or after games. Since I didn't have a lot of time, I went with the 6" pepperoni pizza. The pizza came out in about 10 minutes. The chicago style pizza was a bit of a surprise. The sauce was on top! First the crust, then pepperoni, cheese, and sauce. I can understand why it takes so long to cook a large. The crust is thick. Double layer. The crust was delicious. A bit crunchy. I couldn't really taste the pepperoni, being burried beneath everything. The sauce was good, nice flavor, good balance of herbs and spices. Overall, the pizza was good. I've read some of the comments about the pizza. How some said the pizza wasn't cooked all the way. I can understand that. The oven is not the conveyor belt style the chain pizza places use. The food came out in a timely way but it lacked any flavor whatsoever. The detroit style pizza with pepperoni and tomatoes featured one slice of undercooked pepperoni on each piece and a poorly cut hard chunk of tomato. The crust was just plain overworked dough baked in a well oiled pan to get the edge and bottom crunch. The sauce was bland, like canned tomato sauce, and there was about a tablespoon on each slice, similar amount of cheese. I have been a huge fan of Pizza Papalis for years and would suggest this as spot to visit to anyone; however. This particular visit (during my lunch break @12 on 11/6/25) I order my favorite antipasto salad with a lunch special pizza. As I'm eating my salad (which I love) I noticed something gritty as I bite. In fact, I told my husband I felt as if I was eating sand or grounded glass. When I expressed this to my waitress she attempted to resolve the issue. Believing that it may have been an issue with the salad dressing (by the way they have the best salad dressing ever) She got me another salad. Due to the fact I had to get back to work, instead of me eating the salad I placed the salad into a to-go container. And, that's when I discovered I was eating actual dirt. The new salad revealed there was dirt in the salad. I called the waitress over, showed this to her. She was very apologetic. She reported this to her manager. Instead of the manager coming out to apologize, he/she sent her back out to me removing the salad/pizza combo from the bill and just added the lunch special pizza. The waitress was great and had absolutely nothing to do with the issue, I just want to make that clear. The manager and the person preparing the meal are the individuals I have a problem with. The current anxiety that I'm experiencing know knowing I just ate dirt (and lord knows what else) at one of my favorite restaurants and the manager wasn't man or woman enough to come out and apologized. Just the correction on my bill is an insult to a faithful customer. I'm currently praying I don't become ill from all of this. We had a surprise birthday party here for 19 people. We had one waiter and he was incredible. He set up a special table for all our pizzas and large bowl of salad so we had our own "buffet". The pizzas are fantastic! We had 3 Detroit style pizzas (everyone's favorite) and 2 thin crust. The crusts are crisp on the outside and chewy inside. Sauce is especially good. My family and I went one night to have some Chicago Style Pizza at Pizza Papalis. This restaurant makes both that kind as well as Detroit Style. We came in and there were possibly only three other tables taken. It did not take much time to get seated. We ordered some buffalo wings to get started. Went for lunch and had a calzone. My lunch friends each ordered the cheese steak sandwiches. The food is really good, no problems there... The place is pretty big inside and the decor is nice. We were seated at a booth. We were not asked our preference (they do have tables). I prefer a table when I'm not with family members because I like having the additional room, especially when the weather gets cold, and everyone is wearing a coat. Actually, I'm at the point where I prefer a table to a booth almost every time. Again, I like the room and I think the tables are always cleaner. The food was great. Calzone was amazing, I was told the sandwiches were amazing. Our drinks never went dry, so the waitress did a nice job. The problem... The bathroom was disgusting! I really have to question the cleanliness of the kitchen, food prep, food storage, etc. if the bathroom is dirty. Especially when we were there around 11:30 before they were busy. I don't think the urinals have been cleaned since the 4th of July. The sinks have something growing around the hot and cold escutcheons on the sink. The push plate on the door was covered in fingerprints (and God know what else). The finish on the divider between the urinals and the toilet needs to be fixed. COME ON! This is one step above a college bar bathroom. They also charge a surcharge for using a credit card. I don't recall seeing any posted notice stating they do this, so folks planning on using a credit card, beware. Very disappointing. $24 additional for toppings that could not be found. This seems to be a growing trend at well-known pizza establishments. We ordered 2 large pizzas. several pieces had no toppings at all. When sausage was detected, the size was just a couple of grams. So small and flavorless, like the size of something one would feed an infant. Onions and peppers were options on both pizzas however they were just as invisible as the sausage. I mean, how inexpensive are onions? C'mon be realistic. Looking at past photos on Yelp, something has intentionally and drastically changed. I've encountered this at big name pizza joints now in Toledo, Chicago, Michigan, Florida. Consumers are tired of over-paying for sub-par food at restaurants. To top things off, there's a 4% upcharge for credit/debit. That's a business expense. If you don't want to pay your own expenses, then don't offer it as a payment option. But that would result in complete business failure. This was the second consecutive occurrence at this location. We won't be back. read more

Giving the four stars for the food and one star for their deceptive credit card policies and not following Visa's terms of service. The pizza was really good and filling and a good deal. Service wasn't that great, but they may have been short staffed that day. I had no clue they charged a credit card surcharge or I would have gone to an ATM first. There were at least three violations. Visa requires that a notice be posted on the door and at the register. There were no signs at all and I wasn't aware of it until I received the check. Second violation is they can only charge what their processor charges, up to a max of three percent. They charge four percent. The biggest issue I have is that it's illegal to charge a fee on a debit card, and I was told I would still have to pay the four percent using a debit card. read more

We went for a family birthday dinner last weekend. We were seated in the upstairs party area and had about 3 tables of family seated together (about 25-30 of us). The reservation for the party was made in advance, however it did not seem that there was any preparation for our tables. We were seated quickly, however when we arrived at 530 we did not receive waters/pops until about a half hour later. Others getting beers and alcoholic drinks were waiting even longer. Once we finally received drinks, we ordered knowing it might take a little while. We put in our orders around 615. There were quite a few different orders being a bigger party and we fully understood we would probably be waiting for a while, especially for those of us ordering the deep dish pizza. Myself and my husband ordered together and got one salad and one deep dish pepperoni pizza. Some salads and appetizers came out after some time, however other appetizers were missing and came out later on (even for the same items). Others received their sandwiches while all of us that ordered pizza (deep dish and not deep dish) still waited. The waitress then came around again to re-take our orders to make sure she had everyone's bill together correctly since there were separate orders. I still never received my salad and let our waitress know, and after about 10 minutes finally got the salad and it came out incorrectly, with black olives on it. Everyone else started getting their pizzas around 730- about an hour and a Half after we placed the initial order, and my husband and I did not receive our pizza. We asked our waitress and she said she was going to check on it. When she came back she stated "her papers must have got stuck together" and our order was never even put it. She said we could wait another 30 minutes for our food, but at this point in time everyone was either done eating or close to it. I understand bigger parties are more difficult, but she was the only waitress trying to serve all of us. Mistakes happen, however the fact that our order was taken not once, but twice and it still was never even put in after being at the restaurant for 2 hours seems a bit unacceptable. We have dined here before both in store and take out and have always been satisfied with the food and service, however our experience last weekend was very disappointing. I hope in the future for larger parties there is a little more preparation to ensure food/drinks are delivered in a timely manner. Others in the party were even going downstairs to the bar to get drinks because we were unable to get them timely at our table. Thank you. read more

The last time I had deep dish pizza was like 3 years ago in Chicago and so I cried tears of joy when I found this place. I ordered a carry out but when I went to pick up the pizza the ambience of the restaurant seemed hip and fun. I enjoyed the pizza a lot ( *these are happy tears). Bottom line: three stars for the pizza, four stars for the rest. Ok, with that out of the way, I saw one of the previous reviews proclaiming that Pizza Papalis has the "best pizza in Toledo." My first thought was: "Sister, you must not eat much pizza in T-Town." I've been here couple/three times, and I'm just not that impressed by the pie. The Chicago style is pretty good, IF Chicago style pizza is your thing. It's filling, and it's made with tasty ingredients. In general, these pies tend to be expensive, BUT, if you take into account "grams of pizza per dollar," the cost is probably about average. I'm not crazy about Chicago style pizza, but it definitely fits the bill when I'm in the mood for something a little different. In general, this is a very good product. In terms of taste and value, the thin crust (not really that thin) is actually well below average for Toledo. I'd skip it. The atmosphere is pretty cool; it's just what you'd expect from a nicely repurposed building in downtown Toledo. Like a lot of the new businesses downtown, Pizza Papalis really shines in this area! The waitstaff has always been very friendly and attentive, especially the knowledgable bartenders. Our waitresses have always warned us about the wait-time on the pizza. I've found it to be a longer than expected wait for the thin crust, and a (pleasantly) shorter than expected wait for the Chicago style. Although I'm not super crazy about the pizza here, it's certainly one option for pizza in downtown Toledo. It's also a great place to bring the family after a Mud Hens game. Fun. read more
