Overall a very good experience at Pizza Italia. A long-time customer dating back to the early 2000s, this place has always been a good option for pizza-goers in Reading, PA. Their quality has been consistent and my most recent visit reminded me how consistent their food is almost two decades since my last visit. The Grandma Pizza is very delicious and perhaps their top seller. The fried chicken wings are also delicious. The customer service is very warm and friendly. The inside of this restaurant is aged and dated, however, do not let it discourage you. It is very much is consistent with the characteristics and charm of an old Italian pizza shop. The interior decor, including the seating, seems to be the original furniture. As a small town restaurant this place definitely meets the mark with its character and customer service. They changed the way they make their pizza which is really upsetting. It used to have thin crispy crust, small amount of sauce and a ton of cheese, now it's the complete opposite. My dad used to come here as a kid when the father ran the place, so my family has been coming here for awhile, when I took the pizza home my dad couldn't even tell where the pizza was from because it was so different. It's nothing special now. On the other hand the chicken fries are the best along with the bbq sauce it comes with. read more

We came here at the suggestion of my husband who loves pizza joints. We were staying about 20 miles away so this was quite the drive. I'm very particular about my "cuisine" and prefer to eat a little healthier so this was not a place I would have chosen for myself. However once we finally got there the aroma of the sausage and peppers lured me inside. The smell was authentic and immediately took me back to Arthur Ave in the Bronx. Inside the place was small with a weird layout and very cramped with people - customers and people that worked there alike. It's a converted row house and the small rooms are still for the most part intact. I would say flow and floorplan are their biggest negative, along with street parking. We found a seat and chose from the menu. I chose a chicken ranch cheesesteak, hubby got a few things including slices to go. My cheesesteak was made well and had good flavor. However I missed the smokiness of the bacon which was supposed to be one of the ingredients. I didn't see any. Otherwise I was satisfied with my meal. Hubby raved about his order and the pizza slices were enormous! This type of food is definitely more his element than mine. The staff was friendly and brought our food out. This is an extremely busy place but they seemed to have a system and made the strange floorplan work as orders seemed to come out in a reasonable amount of time. We dined inside, as did many others and I was disappointed by the strong language of some of the other patrons and regret not saying something. Before the long trek back I used the rest room. I could have used a good cleaning, but otherwise was stocked. Settling on a 3 star rating because hubby was very happy with his order, I was under impressed but then again pizza joints aren't my 'thing. Was searching for a pizza place today in Shillington, and started wishing my schedule permitted picking up some pies from Pizza Italia. I grew up right around the corner from PI, ate there and got pizza to go with family and friends for years, and I'll echo the sentiments here on Yelp: you'll be hard-pressed to find better pizza in the Reading area. Service was always a bit hit-or-miss, but in general the owners and employees are professional if not out-and-out friendly -- and I never recall waiting too long for my order or having my order prepared incorrectly. Their grandma pizza is a must. With the exception of Gino's I haven't had another pizza in this style as good as PI's. Add some sausage and roasted red peppers and you've got a grandpa. Their long-standing Wednesday special (I think it's a large cheese pizza for $8.99 these days) is a good deal. Their regular pie crust can be a bit doughy, so ask for your pie "well done" and you should be good to go. Wild card buy: the ranch chicken cheesesteak. Stopped by with a friend who was always talking about this place. I finally took him up on his offer to take me out so I could check it out and give him my opinion. This place is located on 14th Street, right by Albright College. It is a hole in the wall that is basically a corner house converted into a pizzeria. But don't let this deter you from stopping by. The food is great. Because it is small and intimate, as you are ordering at the counter, and even when you are seated at almost any table, you can see the kitchen. The majority of the kitchen is dominated by the brick oven, which my friend told me was the secret to their delectable pizzas. The staff was pleasant. At first, I was disappointed that there was no Stromboli or calzone on the menu. We decided to order a pizza with fresh roasted garlic, asiago, pine nuts and parsley - the "Napoli Special." I enjoyed that we were able to watch as they hand tossed it. The pizza was rustic - not quite a perfect circle, with crispy crust, perfect amount of cheese, and other toppings. I thought the pine nuts might have been burnt, but they were not. This was a great pie with quality ingredients. Frankly, I couldn't believe I was eating such great pizza in an establishment with Philadelphia Eagles and New Jersey Nets paraphernalia strewn about the place. Even the chef tossing the pizza was wearing a jersey. I would have rated this place with 5 stars; however, I had to (no lie) get a key to use the men's room. Weird. read more

Pizza Italia is hands-down the best pizza joint in Reading. Esposito's is a very close second. Only the Italians know how to make good pizza in Reading. Keep it up guys! As a faithful customer for 20 years, I can vouch on the quality of the food. I'm mostly familiar with the New York style pizza, Sicilian Pizza & Grandmas Pizza. All 3 are great! Dough is cooked through properly, and plenty of yummy cheese. The cheesesteaks are also great. Can't speak for the rest of the food on the menu since I just go for the pizza. I want to say something about the few bad reviews for what it's worth. One review said her food was cold when ordered. Well, why didn't you call them back and say something about it? I'm sure they would have stood behind their reputation. Then you could have written a nice review about how they stood by their food. You didn't. Accidents happen. I believe they would have rectified the problem. Two other reviews said the customer service was bad. First, welcome to Berks County. If you want really good customer service move down south. Berks countians don't necessarily go to food joints because of the sparkling customer service, they go there because of the food is awesome. Right or wrong, it's a Berks County thing. Personally, I have never had bad customer service, and I've been going for 20 years. Second, they are a very busy joint and small. They were probably stressed out, perhaps someone was having a bad day. Give them a break already!? So, should you eat here? Of course you should! This is our go-to place for ordering pizza. The menu is huge and the prices are nice and low! My husband and I tend to be pizza crazy, we love pizza. That being said, we don't really go for the big pizza chains. If I'm craving a pie, I order from here. We normally get the pizza and wings special (and yes there are special everyday that are definitely worth it) The wings are fried but they keep the sauce to the side which, thank you, I hate hate hate soggy wings (don't we all). So far I've always been pleased with the quality of the food. Also, their pies are pretty big which is always a bonus. I am only giving this 4 stars because if you order from here for delivery, expect to wait. And yes, if you're getting delivery you do consent to wait, but Pizza Italia has made me wait seriously long times. We've actually had to call before because we thought they weren't coming. I'm pretty sure they get slammed and just get really backed up but still, the wait is long. I'm looking forward to ordering again and trying some other items on the menu. With or without the wait, Pizza Italia is still my main squeeze when it comes to local pizza. read more

I received one large cheese pizza today and I was very disappointed. They did tell me about 45 minutes but it was cold and $13.25 was too much. Their online menu said 9.25 and a more recent one said 10.25 and free delivery. I probably wouldn't of mind about the price but it was not worth it. The pizza used to be much better back in the day.
