We stopped at Pizza Gege during a six-hour bike tour of Appian Way, which did not include lunch. We were told there would be an opportunity to buy food, but figured lunch would be functional and pretty much besides the point. I was surprised, then, by how good this place was, a casual but delicious roadside pizzeria.
The interior was small, built around a long counter full of different types of pizza, all of them available to buy by weight. There was a nice woman who spoke good English working the counter. She cut us slices of margherita and potato pizza, as well as a handsome portion of panini. She weighed it all and we added two cold beers, a Peroni and a Menabrea blonde. We paid a little over $23 for this lunch.
The pizza was great, the crust thin and crispy but supple. I liked both the tangy margherita and the potato, with a touch of rosemary. I was also quite into the panini, which was simple and excellent, with mozzarella and some variety of Italian cured ham.
We ate on the patio adjoining the parking lot, a comfortably strip mall-like set-up we didn't see in the more central parts of Rome. We used the tiny but serviceable bathroom then went to enjoy the rest of our tour. Did we need pizza and beer when we were riding e-bikes the whole time? Maybe not, but Pizza Gege was still a welcome part of a particularly lovely day. read more
