I love this place. I heard about this spot not long ago from some friends born and raised in the mission district. I'm glad they recommended this place, their vegetables are fresh. There's been a few times I've come in to order and seen them washing and cutting fresh veggies! Hands down the best pizza in Bernal Heights and surrounding area. I'll drive the 10 mins to get here to pick up great pizza. I usually go with their Express Special. The rising crust and sauce is just perfect. I placed an order for Pizza + delivery charge + 15% Tip. Total charge was $34. I received text saying delivery would be in about 30 minutes. Then I received a call saying they had no driver until 4 PM. They asked if I could pick up and i explained that we called them because they could deliver. I asked if they would refund money to my card. They said they didn't do that there. Worried I said I'll tell you what, (trying to say I'll pick it up). No food or money back Then girl went into a non-stop yelling talking over me and hung up on me. I called back and said I would pick it up since they could not refund my money. They said they cancelled the order. if I wanted the Pizza I would have to pay again. I asked what happened to the money I paid with my credit card and they said they don't deal with that and I would have to call something called Slice. They never said my money would be refunded and refused any more information. They never explained what happened to my money and I guess I'll have to dispute the charges on my card statement. read more

This has been my go-to pizza joint in the neighborhood/city for like... I can't even remember how long. It's seriously my favorite place for a solid, nothin-too-fancy, delivery pizza. The regular crust is thick but it's a good airy dough w nice outer crunch (and great w/ a little olive oil or other dip/spread). Also a big plus, they're nice and fast, and it always arrives hot out at my place on the other side of the 280. There's a few joints the deliver around here where you can get a slightly cheaper pizza, but I depend on Pizza Express whenever I'm in the mood. The Urgent Call to End Workplace Bullying! I was at Pizza Express in Cortland on 3/10 around 7pm with my boyfriend getting a slice of pizza. We were sitting down waiting for our pizza to be baked. Within a couple minutes this man comes in wearing a robe and slippers and starts to yell at one of the drivers. The reason why I knew the young man was a driver because this person yelling at him(later I found out he's the actual owner) was yelling at him about having another job and making him feel worthless because he had a second job and telling him that he needed to be there to deliver for him. Paul (owner) was yelling at him in front of customers out in the open about his business. The owner was discussing his problem with the young boy, intimidating him, belittling him and humiliating him. I couldn't take it anymore after this went on for over 5 minutes and I stood up and told the owner that it was very unprofessional and disrespectful of him to treat his employee like this out in the public for the customers to hear. All he said was 'Ok' rudely and continued. It's obvious that Paul is a bully and has no character. I followed the young man outside and made sure he was ok. I told him not to let anyone disrespect him like that. That he needs to do what's best for him. All he said was that he needed this second job. Very sad situation. Intimidation and control makes these people feel powerful, and to ensure that they keep feeling powerful, they seek out targets who have a disinterest in confrontation so that they get their jollies by emotionally destroying them. First. To the owner. If you have a price posted somewhere you honor the price posted. I was told by your cashier that you're aware of this and haven't done anything about it. Cashiers words were "I'm just a cashier, what do you want me to do about it!" Pizza was also lacking decent amount of sauce and was pretty flavorless. 1st and last time. Very solid "hole in the wall" style pizzeria. I walked in on a breezy Saturday afternoon and was served promptly. I ordered two slices, but the lady at the counter told me their single slices are "really more like doubles". When I got the slice, it was the size of a standard large slice but had a cut down the middle. The pizza is NY style but on the slightly crispier, slightly breadier side of things. There was plenty of cheese and tomato sauce, and the toppings were good. Overall the restaurant looked and felt simple and clean, though the space was somewhat awkwardly organized with a large employees only section and really not meant for groups of people to come and eat. That said, space is always tricky in SF :) I'd be down to try their delivery. Also for those cashless types strolling in the neighborhood, they do have a $10 credit card minimum. read more

I absolutely love their pizza. Personally, I can eat a whole large pizza, shh. Pizza Express really hits the spot for me every time. I've ordered delivery there about three times now. The employees are always friendly to me and I try to order at least every couple months, because their pizzas are awesome sauce! I'm actually pretty shocked to see so many bad reviews about this place. I used to live right across the street and got slices here once or twice a week. First of all, I can confirm the staff is a bunch of kids. It's rather annoying because half the time they take about 2 minutes to punch in your order, or they would forget to put my order in, and I'd walk in 10 minutes later and they forgot. However... These small downsides are negated by their absolutely DELICIOUS Pizza. By the slice or by the Pie, this is some damn good stuff. The cook once told me that if I put too many toppings on the pizza it won't cook right. That's the first time someone ever told me that. Every time without failure these pizzas are absolutely out of this world delicious. Worth dealing with the kid staff every time. read more

For me: good crust, right amount of toppings and cheese (not too much cheese as you get some places in SF). I have always been a huge fan of the Bernal Heights area and I am so happy I stopped by this great place. Tried the Cortland Special and fell in love. Tasty grilled chicken, fresh artichoke hearts and delicious pesto. Liked it so much I ordered a few pizzas for my next meeting at work. I've had this pizza and I love it, their crust is soft, the delivery time is faster than other pizza places. I've called once and used the app, sometimes I don't trust the app to order my food, but it worked out well. When they delivered it to my work place, they called me to let me know they were outside (since there is no parking in front) I waited by the front door, he double parked and was very nice. Make sure you ask for Plates, Napkins, Red pepper and cheese, they will give it to you in a bag. If you order a certain size (I think XL) you'll get a free soda, I think that's a good deal!!! Their cheese pizza is very good, I would order it over and over and over again, but I also love my -mushroom, sausage, green onion- combination. They should do a special deal for City Employees, I think we would order more often if there was!!! After this review, I think I am going to have some pizza during my birthday month! YAY! read more

The pizza here is pretty janky from what I remember but they're getting rolled back to 1 star for service this time. Me and one of my amigos were at the Stray Bar on Cortland yesterday evening crushing some beers and shooting some pool. My friend asks if I'd eaten yet and I say no, so he orders a large hawaiian from Pizza Express, and they tell us it will arrive in 30 minutes. 45 minutes later we call back, and the stoner hippy who was manning the phones, says that he forgot to place the order, but would give us some free breadsticks if we waited. This is my favorite place to get pizza ever. I admit I don't know if this is out of childhood nostalgia or what; I've been getting Pizza Express since I was a little kid. The slices are enormous triangles of cheese and grease. When I was a kid I would get winded eating one slice. As an adult, 1.5 just about does me in. The prices are a little steep, but Pizza Express is my guilty pleasure. You can get cheap, so-so pizza anywhere. I've only ever eaten in the restaurant once, many years ago -- I've always had it delivered -- so I can't really speak on behalf of their service inside the restaurant. I'm not a huge fan of thick, chewy crusts. Pizza Express has thick, chewy crusts. So, I'm not a huge fan. However, I do like how they slice up the peppers and onions (long slices, not cubes like Pizza Hut, ick!), their prices are okay (around $15 for a medium with three toppings), and they're pretty fast. The place itself leaves something to be desired (definitely dirty), but delivery is not good, either (they messed up my order on a particularly hungry night--not good!). I would recommend phone ordering for pick up if you live nearby and can't go somewhere else, but I wouldn't say Pizza Express is the best pizza around. read more

We had some friends over on Saturday night, and I'm so lazy lately (or maybe I just have better things to do than cook) so we ordered some pizzas and salad at Pizza Express. The delivery went a little long, no sign of pizzas over an hour after I placed the order. I called in, and they couldn't find the order! I gave them my credit card number and everything! That made me worry about their card security procedures. (I work for a major bank, in the legal dept., working with just these issues!) Anyways, the guy starts to retake my order and offers me a free 2 liter bottle of soda, because he feels bad. And as he's taking the order, the door bell rings. It's the pizza! They finally arrived! Phew! Like other reviewers have said, the pizzas are quite doughy, which I'm not a fan of. The pizza tastes ok, better a few days later with some crushed red pepper sprinkled generously. Pizza Express is one of the few pizza places that sells calzones, which is a huge bonus for me. The calzone is $18 w/ tax, and enough for 2 (meals or people, take your pick). Recently It was convient so My friend and I ordererd up a couple pepperoni slices. We were both suprised the slice was completely covered with above average pep. the sauce was very good and the crust was excellent. Every once in a while I get this craving for pizza that I just can't deny. Mind you, I have become lactose intolerant in my old age, and the cheese just wreaks havoc with my internal organs (TMI? Maybe). When I get that hankering, I always order from Pizza Express. I like there huge selection of specialty pizzas. I am particularly fond of the Cortland Special (which has grilled chicken, artichoke hearts, pesto, garlic, onions, spinach...) and the Aloha ( pineapple, Canadian bacon, bacon, ham....). This brings me to why they only get 3 stars, even though I am a regular customer. There are TOO MANY TOPPINGS! I am all for lots of flavors, but they pile the pizza so high, it is almost impossible to eat. There are few fine pizza places in this city, so Pizza Express serves Bernal very well. The table chef recommends warming a stone in the oven when ordering. We've ordered delivery from here several times and it's been A-OK each time. Nothing special, but it's a neighborhood spot, and the only pizza delivery on Cortland. Now if only they can find our house even though we're just off Cortland. We always get some kind of combo and you can't go wrong with any of them. Most of them are meat laden which is good and bad. Many of the pies are thick and greasy, even the ones with just cheese or veggies. That may be fine for some of you but I sometimes have to take a paper towel and take off some of the oil. Just had 2 large pizzas delivered. We tried 2 years ago and not too excited. But NOW we were very happy to have called them. Delivery time was good and the pizza was better. I thought the cheese was great. I have noticed pizza places using cheese lately that does not stretch like pizza when I was a kid. This place does have that cheese Hooray !!!
