This was one of three restaurants open during the off-season. So, I'll give it a star for that. It was one of the few places that had a salad option. Traveling all the time usually makes "green items" impossible to find. So, I'll give it another star. Food came out. It was okay. I got the chicken pot pie which had an odd spice I couldn't place. It was more similar to a creamy chicken tortilla soup. My fiancé got the short rib. Both were again, just okay. Portions were small and OVERPRICED. We got the cinnamon sundae dessert. Very mediocre food. Came here because they offered beef short ribs which is what we were looking for. My party got the ribs, trout, however not very many vegetarian/gluten free options for me. Salad bar was very plain, chili and tomato basil soup was offered with the salad bar, however the soup was unfortunately not gluten free. No host, just servers, no manager to be seen anywhere, was asked for my menu twice because they didnt have enough menus for customers (restaurant was less than half full). Servers seemed stressed. Restaurant Customers got evicted by a CRAZY Waitress! Can you believe this? Her name is LEN! Well She's already a bit annoyed and impatient to take my order in the very beginning (long wait time even the restaurant not that busy), and when I ask how long it's gonna take, she yelled "20 minutes!" Well I'm not deaf and you don't need to yell. As I confronted her and cancelled my meal ( asked in a nice manner), she suddenly fell apart and shouted out " YOU LEAVE, YOU GET OUT OF MY RESTAURANT!" Holy cow. I think this crazy lady needs to quit her job and get some mental help. Still waiting for the manager to solve this unpleasantness. We had driven all day and were staying for one night at the resort and when we checked in at the desk they mentioned that the dinner would start serving at 5:30 PM. We walked down at around 6PM and saw that the restaurant was almost one third full and we were told, by the smiling receptionist, we are booked until 8PM. We smiled back and said well we need to go elsewhere he comment was " well good luck ". This is a restaurant in the resort. The food was terrible, we felt. My wife ordered the flatiron steak, our server just raved about how it was so good, so she ordered it. It was AWFUL! It was medium rare, just as she ordered, but it was nothing but gristle, very greasy and fatty. No thank you, we sent that back. I ordered the pork chop, it was okay. A little overdone and dried out on the edges, but edible. We spent $52 plus tip, for a not so great meal. We tried the breakfast buffet the next morning. For $10 per person for what you get. It really wasn't to bad. Today, it had pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage links and fresh fruit and cereals. The breakfast was a descent value. The breakfast was what saved the restaurant from getting a one star. read more

We stopped here after our first day at Capitol Reef. The restaurant was near empty at around 7pm. We asked if they were open to which they said yes and welcomed us in. COVID-19 of course has impacted business and restaurants alike. They said normally they would be packed. This was on a Thursday evening May 28, 2020. I ordered the beef short rib with a baked potato. The short rib was okay. The portion was smaller than expected for $20, which in fairness out waitress warned us might be the case. The slight amount of vegetables on the side were over salted. The potato was dry. My wife ordered the cat fish tacos which she indicted were good. I wouldn't probably go there again but I will say the service was fantastic. We ate here twice while we stayed at the Capitol Reef Resort. For dinner, the chicken pot pie is a winner, just get that if you are a cpp fan. The chicken fried steak seemed like something that was frozen and heated up and the gravy was probably from a jar. The hamburgers looked good, and my son loved the kids burger, although it was more of the size of a slider. We then had breakfast one morning. It's a buffet ($10 for adults, $6 for kids). Everything was good, but we had to wait for more bacon and pancakes to be made. I think we got there at the end of the breakfast time, so I get it. It wasn't too inconvenient. This place has all the potential to be good, but it just isn't there. Some of the entrees we got were excellent... others were not! We also tried to order the sea bass, but apparently they have not had it for over a month?? The orange trout was delicious and prepared well. It was accompanied with mixed vegetables which were also delicious. I highly recommend if you are looking for a non-meat dish. It is really the only option besides the salad bar, which looked absolutely horrible and unappealing. The salad bar had a lot of the right ingredients, but no presentation. Items were placed on top of aluminum foil that was then stuffed in a tin can. Iceberg lettuce and wilted spinach were the only choices. Service was mediocre... Good luck! read more

We had eaten here 2 years ago and had an excellent experience. It didn't disappoint. The restaurant was very busy. We were promptly served with great friendly service. We had a party of 6. The chicken enchiladas are amazing. A very homemade taste. Salad bar, manicotti and 2 different fish options were ordered....all very good. They could have used more help because everyone table was filled and only 2 people working their tails off. Great food and experience. We will for sure be back again. read more

Pleasantly surprised that the food tastes good. The servings are large and hearty. My husband ordered pork chops and they were seasoned well. The homemade potato fries were tasty. Breakfast order were a large portion which also included fruits. The servers were very nice and attentive to their customers. I will come back again if we pass by this area. read more

Many of the restaurants in town know you are probably a tourist and price gouge. The Pioneer Kitchen had reasonable prices and great food. The staff was friendly and accommodating to dietary needs. Really nice server, but food missed the mark. Drove a few hours from Canyonlands and needed a quick bite before turning in, so decided to visit on-site restaurant. Ordered the "homemade" chicken pot pie, which we found (upon arrival) you can only have if you eat at the restaurant (vs takeout). So, even with Covid, my wife and I ordered inside...a side of green salad and vegetables came first (both quite mediocre), but we were excited about a nice pot pie given it was a chilly night. In short, it was not good...pastry on top looked good at first, but underneath discovered it was a mix of weird ingredients that had a bizarre flavor...unedible for both of us, and I pretty much eat everything. Tried the peach crisp afterwards...wife liked it but tasted super sugary to me...overall, as I eat cereal in my room afterwards to fill up my belly, pretty disappointed. Would probably recommend doing a burger if I ate here again....hard to mess up. read more

We had an amazing experience. The food was good. I wouldn't say anything over the top. The portions were on the smaller size BUT they give you a decent amount of food for the price. This may seem contradictory, so let me explain- I ordered eggs with bacon. I received a plate with several scrambled eggs, potatoes, fruit, bacon and toast. So, if you're looking at the portion of each item, it's not a lot compared to other restaurants perhaps, yet, still plenty of food. The main reason for the 5 stars was the server. I wish I had gotten her name. She was extremely kind and accommodating. She was on top of everything we needed including refills and getting our food out quickly for a large group. The food was tasty, it's pretty hard to mess up breakfast though. We brought our own wine (aware of the $10 corkage charge) and then waited an hour to receive our meals, without any server visiting our table to explain the delay. When our meals arrived, it was clear that both entrees had been sitting for a bit (i.e., neither was appropriately hot). Would give this place 0 stars if I could. The staff was incredibly rude for no apparent reason at all. We walked in and we were greeted by a lady (long black hair in a braid) with a horrible attitude problem. Before she tried to make us sit down in such a hurry we kindly asked if there were any options with no dairy, eggs, or cheese so she didn't have to sit us down and have us leave in 5 minutes later. Well that didn't go so well....her and the male employee go, "Sit down a server will come to you," in the most condescending tone I have ever heard in my life. At this point instead of being pissed off we are just honestly confused, so we say, "Uh alright," and proceed to STAND next to a table that is quite literally 2 yards away from them. They end up walking over to the table anyways since there were 3 employees 2 of which where the ones mentioned above. She proceeds to say the black bean burger is vegetarian but keeps hiding the other ingredients and keeps repeating, "It has black beans." Then the male employee comes over and informs us that he works in all three restaurants across the street and he suggests some dishes but keeps saying, "If you remove the cheese it would be disgusting" and "If you take that out it would be gross." We say thank you, hand them back their menus and exit the place with a bad taste in our mouth. No way were we going to eat somewhere where the people acted like the world revolves around them. We ended up eating at the Rim Rock Inn restaurant across the street and they had great options with friendly and NORMAL staff. Stopped here again a year later. We had to convince our friends this place has good, fresh food. They didn't see a sign for the restaurant from the highway, so it was a tough sell. We do recommend adding a well-designed sign outside, because people don't know there's a restaurant. Once inside, we enjoyed a really good experience. Homemade pot pies didn't disappoint, and my friend's dish, the chicken enchiladas were excellent. Chips and salsa also fresh and the salad bar was just what our friends were hoping for. I thought that because it is attached to a hotel that I shouldn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was really good. My hubby had a steak and I had the enchiladas. Honestly, there are not many food options in this town. Pioneer Kitchen, although not great, is probably one of the better bets. We ordered take out here one night for dinner. Overall, the food was good, not great. The Braised Short Ribs was very salty but the beef was very tender. The Flatiron Steak was a bit on the tough side. The wait for the food was very reasonable. However, I wish the service was a little more consistent. Others that were there at the same time ordered from a lady while we ordered from a gentleman. The lady said to wait in the lobby and she will call us when the food is ready. We waited for about 15 to 20 mins and decided to go back into the restaurant to check on our order. The guy then saw us and said "oh, your food is ready and is sitting there". So apparently, if you ordered from the lady, she will come and get you, but if you ordered from another person, you might not. read more

Convenient and Good and Open! Capital Reef Resort is one of two hotels open in the winter in Torrey. Part of the resort complex is the Pioneer Kitchen. It is actually a separate business from the hotel, leasing space in the resort. It is also one of only 2 restaurants open in Torrey in the winter. We went there for two breakfasts and one dinner. Fortunately, considering our rather trapped and limited options, the food and service was quite good. In the morning they do a breakfast buffet. This meal was less successful. The eggs were coldish and the bacon was burnt. There was a do-it-youself toaster with a good selection of bread. And there was some nice fresh fruit. For dinner the same buffet is turned over to salad and soup and fresh fruit. This is a more successful meal. The soups were a tasty cream of tomato and a very good chili. The salads were a nice mix of fresh greens and it was pleasant to have some fresh fruit. The manicotti was quite nice as well. Service was pleasant and the restaurant is quite tidy. Considering the limited options and distance from even a grocery store, I upped my rating from a 3 to 4. It's fortunate that the Pioneer Kitchen is open in the winter. read more

We ate here because we were staying at the hotel and not much else was open when we pulled in late. The staff was great but the food was terrible. It honestly looked like a microwave freezer meal. We arrived to the Capitol Reef Resort and were starving so we thought we would try the Pioneer Kitchen because it was right there. I would like to establish two things to set the stage of what kind of eater I am 1.) I have never sent food back in my life and 2.) I enjoy hot dogs. With that being said, this is the worst meal I have ever had. And once I accidentally swallowed a large bug riding my bike. My mom order the "chicken pot pie" and I ordered the "stuffed pepper." I am using quotation marks because that is clearly what these dishes were in name only. Our order arrived no more than 6 minutes later, apparently long enough for someone to hit the auto reheat button on the microwave. The "stuffing" in the stuffed pepper was runny something or the other with bits of corn. The "potpie" filling was a watery can of cream of chicken soup with some kind of pillsbury croissant balancing on top of the bowl as "the crust". My mom is getting old, but she could clearly see that wasn't a pie. Both were served with a hard undercooked potato. We could not even attempt to eat the food. Just to kick you when you're down, the bill was $50. If you would like to pretend like you're in a prison mess hall, the Pioneer Kitchen is for you. read more
