Red velvet pancakes, frittata & bacon
    Nique F.

Truth be told, brunch doesn't appeal to me that much. Mainly because: there are always lines, it's pricey for what it is, I'm tempted to day drink, and I always feel like going back to bed afterwards. Usually, I'll just wait for lunch. But, when a friend excitedly forwarded me the Pinx Pop-Up brunch menu, I was like "hmmm, that's different". Red velvet pancakes, shrimp & grits, sweet potato waffles. For $15, why the heck not? They hosted their pop-up at the Sound Room in Uptown Oakland, which added an extra element of surprise, but also gave the space a more corporate vs. cozy feel. We had reserved a table for 9 people at 11am, but weren't seated until almost 11:45, as they were running behind. I get it, these things are hard to predict. We might have been peeved if it weren't for the owner coming out to chat with us and give us free packets of cookies to hold us over. The mood outside was festive, as all the pop-up supporters peeked through the windows, waiting for their turn to indulge in the 3-course brunch party. Once seated, the food varied from good to great. The spicy shrimp & cheesy grits were the winner, I could have eaten an entire pot full. The sweet potato pancakes were also plate-licking good, with their crispy crust, gooey center, and salted caramel sauce soaking in. The thick cut bacon was some of the best I've had, and I usually pass my bacon to my boyfriend. The red velvet pancakes and frittata, I could have done without. Same with the coffee -- it was too reminiscent of my "International Delight" days. Shame. The Pinx staff were enthusiastic, friendly, and working hard to make this pop-up go smoothly. There were some inevitable kinks, but the upbeat spirit and soulful food left us all with a sweet taste in our literal and proverbial mouths. What does this mean for you? If you're looking for a caterer, that's what they do!

Shrimp 'n grits. The dish was more like a bowl in the center, so the portion was larger than appearances may suggest.

I had the salmon, fried prawns, mac and cheese, and cabbage. Everything we tried was flavorful, fresh, and cooked with care. The standout items were the blackened shrimp and the crab. The butter sauce covering the crab was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The salmon was cooked exactly the way salmon should be--moist, flaky, and tender. Too many restaurants overcook salmon and dry it out in the center, but Chef Smelly's got it right. The fried prawns paired perfectly with their sweet chili sauce, which was a nice change from the usual tartar sauce. The sides held their own. The mac and cheese was creamy with great texture, and while I won't call it the best I've ever had, it was very good. The cabbage was excellent, but the collard greens were the real surprise. They reminded me of my mother's homemade greens, and that's not a compliment I give lightly. If you're from the South, you know how hard it is to find greens that taste like they came from someone's family kitchen. The service was attentive, friendly, and hospitable throughout the meal. More importantly, the food was consistently good from start to finish. Bottom line: Chef Smelly's is worth the visit. Great flavor, quality ingredients, and food that feels like it was made with pride. We'll definitely be back and would gladly recommend it to others.

It was a little hard to find because the bldg had a sign that says "AU" and not the actual name of the restaurant. We were greeted as soon as we got to the front and were seated right away. The ambiance was nice. The place was clean. We opted to get the hot honey chili prawns for an appetizer and it was pretty good. Hubby got his fried catfish w/ collard greens and yams. I got the fried red snapper w/ the mac n cheese and yams for our main entree. The food came pretty fast and hot. Pretty big servings also which made it ok since they priced each at $31. The fish tasted great, the only problem was they switched our fish. The yams were good and collards were ok. Mac n cheese we didn't really care for. Excellent service and I would say the food was ok. **I ordered the red snapper w/ mac n cheese n yams and my husband ordered catfish w/ collards n yams. I ended up w/ the catfish and he was given the snapper. We were halfway w/ our meal when he said I think u have my catfish. Not saying anything bad about the restaurant, it's just our fish was not with the correct sides and we had it mixed up. ** Both fish were cooked to perfection and tasted great. Just the sides were just ok.

I had heard of them before because a friend used them for their wedding, and since I plan events for a living, I've worked with a lot of caterers. For my own event though, price mattered a lot, but I still wanted really good food. After reaching out to a bunch of places, I went with Havana because I had tried their food before and their pricing was very reasonable. We ordered full trays of adobo chicken, lechon roasted pork, crispy tofu, paella, sofrito rice, black beans, corn, poblano mac and cheese, and plantains. I did bring in one dish from another restaurant, Jamaican oxtail, just because I know my guests are big foodies. The biggest hits from Havana were definitely the poblano mac and cheese, lechon, and the paella. Honestly, the mac and cheese was the standout. Everyone kept going back for it and I wish I had ordered an extra tray. What really stood out to me though was the delivery experience. The driver called me ahead of time, brought everything in, and set it all up. He opened the trays with gloves, added sauces, arranged everything nicely, and even put out utensils and labels. I've had plenty of catering deliveries before and this was easily one of the best. He was just genuinely kind and went above and beyond, and it made a big difference. Overall, everything went smoothly, the food was great, and I would definitely order from them again.
