While my children were getting their teeth cleaned, another family arrived. The littler boy was very shy and the dental hygienist went out of her way to make him comfortable. Safety measures are in place at this office. You must call when you arrive to limit capacity and for COVID-19 screening questions. When the staff is ready for you, you walk inside and get your temperature checked. Everyone is spaced apart and dividers are in place to ensure patients are separated from one another. While there is usually a play room and lots of old and new video games, they have all been removed due to COVID-19. I look forward to their return one day. Nonetheless, this is still a very kid friendly space.

My son has now been coming here for about two years for twice yearly check-ups! I am impressed with the friendly staff, the facility, and Dr. Steckler himself! The waiting room includes a sea-themed playroom for kids attached to the typical waiting space. The staff is always happy and able to help in any way they can. Dr. Steckler is very friendly and personable (on our last visit, he noticed my son's new light-up shoes and got him excited), completely understands kids, and is very easy-going. I also love that all dental work is done in one open room, so everyone can see everything going on and it cuts back on any unease for kids and parents. After the appointment, kids get to pick a small toy and a toothbrush, which is always fun! My kid always leaves with a smile.

Ok, Yelp: time for a confession. Prior to my visit, I hadn't had a solid dental check-up in at…read moreleast a couple of years. I received check-ups at a chain dental franchise in graduate school. I didn't have dental insurance, and even though the service there was okay, it frequently burned through dental hygienists and gouged my pocketbook when it could. I made excuses -- need to finish my field work, too busy, gotta get a job -- and quit going. Now that I'm here, I bought dental insurance through my employer but had no idea about the benefits. And again, excuses: too busy, my teeth are "okay," what have you. I learned about Dr. Oldfield's office through recommendations from friends on Facebook. Now that it's summer, I had to suck it up and go in for a cleaning. Dr. Oldfield's office is located in Old Town in a very charming converted house. The office has a few spaces in its parking lot and street parking available. Walk through the double doors and a receptionist at a massive front desk greets you. Since I was a new client, the office sent paperwork to fill out in advance (standard medical questionnaire, bio, allergies, etc.). I gave her my form, confirmed my BlueCross BlueShield insurance, and took a seat in the lobby. Bridget, the hygienist, greeted me about 10 minutes thereafter. We began with a series of x-rays and bite wings. The first x-ray machine, surprisingly enough, required me to stand up in an enclosed unit and bite down on the guard. That was a bit unusual. The second round of x-rays -- the bite wings -- were done sitting down in the hygienist station. She took my blood pressure. Bridget explained that the x-rays would help identify if I have cavities or structural problems in my teeth. While she was getting her dental tools ready, I noticed a poster on the wall that said all the features that come with a cleaning. I must say, it was very detailed and, indeed, she went through all the steps. I'll spare you the details about what she scraped off my teeth. A couple of things are worth noting. First, Bridget was thorough but very gentle. She manually performed scaling and it was very light and comfortable. The supersonic scaler (the one that shoots warm water into your mouth and requires some suction) was a bit uncomfortable on my back teeth, but she worked it very swiftly through my teeth and sucked out the water regularly. Bridget did one more round of manual scraping, polished my teeth, and flossed my smile. I was surprised that Mary came out before I left the office. In the past, I've never met the "head" dentist unless they needed to do something other than a cleaning. She introduced herself, thanked me for coming in; checked my teeth, arches, and tongue; and made pleasant talk. Before leaving, she gave me a goodie bag of dental supplies -- -- in a cute blue and white ceramic rinse cup. I'm in Berea, y'all. I checked out with the receptionist. Because I don't know my work schedule yet, she agreed to send a reminder card for January. I asked what I owed: nothing, she smiled. (The dental insurance must be better than I thought!) I'm looking forward to my next visit!

Dr. Oldfield, a very warm Thank You to you and your office during this holiday season.
