One day my co-worker came in with a nice cut and color, and slapped a card on my desk offering $20 off a cut/color service at the salon she went to (should have been my first warning sign). Mind you my co worker has thin blonde hair, and I have a thick, long, mop of dark brown hair. With the tease of $20 off and a salon that was geographically more pleasant to me, where I didn't have to worry about parking downtown and taking out a college student in the process, I fell for it. Mind you, prior to this I was Becky with the Good Hair. This was all thanks to Dia Johnson at Willow. So my lazy, cheap self went to this "other" salon, and I will save you the long story, but it was the worst decision I have ever made! The girl ruined my hair. My hair was long, just a bit past my boobs, and I walked out of there with a glorified mullet that was only a few inches below my shoulders. Don't even get me started on the color. I had only wanted a few highlights to blend in what had grown out in the last 7 months since I had last had my hair done by Dia (I would like to mention it STILL looked good 7 months later, Dia is obviously that talented). When I left, it was bad. Brassy, splotchy, and when they tried to "fix" it, it was over-toned and green! Not to mention they tried to convince me it looked ok! I told myself I was going to live with it, then at work one day, while staring at myself in the flattering glow of florescent lighting, I freaked out and immediately decided to, with my tail between my legs, go back to the last place I had good hair. Willow. I called, desperate for a same day appointment. The salon owner, Nicole, graciously fit me in as her last client of the day for a consultation, so we could make a plan and calm my nerves. (Y'all I'm ashamed what a mess I was! Emotionally that is.) She took a look at my hair, told me a plan, and then said if I didn't have to be anywhere, she would be happy to get started on it today because she knew how upset I was. Needless to say, I LOVE MY HAIR, Nicole has given me life! I know this review is already so long, and I feel like I have so many more wonderful things to say about Nicole (and Dia), and frankly the whole salon. I was eyeing every girl that walked out of there and they all left with fabulous hair. The girls are all so nice and easy to talk to. I've learned my lesson the hard way and I won't be going anywhere else. I was quoted $150 over the phone, but when it came time to check out, they charged me $300. When I asked about the price difference, the stylist laughed and said, "Oh, the receptionist doesn't speak English very well, that's probably why she gave you the wrong price." I was shocked and frustrated. My appointment was also incredibly delayed. Despite having an appointment, I waited an hour and 45 minutes before being seen, and I ended up spending five hours there in total. The salon has no structure, and from what I saw, many of the staff aren't even licensed. During the treatment, my scalp was burning, and they over-processed my hair. They told me the burning sensation was normal and even put a fan on me, but I ended up with severe burns on my scalp. Now, I have terrible dandruff, and my once long, healthy hair is now damaged and much shorter. The treatment felt more like a relaxer than a keratin treatment. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, and I'll be contacting the state board about my experience. Save yourself the trouble and find another salon that values professionalism, honesty, and your hair's health.

It took about 2 minutes for one of the stylist to tell the host/manager and/or owner, that someone was at the door. Soon after being greeted, I was told that my stylist was running 15 minutes late (more like 40 minutes) as she had to run to the supply store to get products. I asked the host/manager/owner if someone would be able to at least get my hair washed as I waited for my stylist. She offered to do it, but not before seeming completely inconvenienced by my request. As I'm walking over to the washing station, I notice how filthy the salon was. Hair and dust everywhere. Literally everywhere. It had not been maintained in a very long time as I saw a ton of dust on the hair stations and on the baseboards. F i l t h y is an understatement. I immediately felt regret and suggested I come back another time. The host/manager/owner reassured me that they offer excellent blow outs and that she herself had been in the industry for 40 years. Out of guilt I sat down and started to pray. I noticed that a lot of their product bottles were missing tops and had product running down the side. The woman even added water to the shampoo bottle she was using on me to get the last bit of product out. The woman I originally had my appointment with finally shows up and finished the job. She did a decent job (aside from getting my hair caught on the brush handle, yanking on knots and leaving part of my hair damp), but was clearly frazzled as she was asked to run this errand all while I was waiting for her, as well as another client. Overall, this is a poorly run business with zero customer service, lack of pride and knowledge.

When I called the make the appointment, someone answered quickly, suggested the best time in relation to the start of my event, and even told me the names of the students that would be working with me and gave me the prices. Obviously, the pricing is much better than your traditional services. The students were very nice, talked through everything that you wanted, helped with suggestions, and asked their instructors for additional advice, if needed. I recently called and booked another appointment for another even I have next month and booking process was easy. They didn't tell me who I would be with this time, but I think the students that worked with me last time have both graduated. Hoping my next appointment is as good as the last was. Be prepared for it to take a little while, as they might work through a little slower than you'd expect at a typical salon, but you know they are students - that should be expected. The location is a bit confusing, as it is in Citadel Mall, but not specifics to where in the mall. Just FYI, it's right outside of Belk.
