Old faithful. This place has the best traditional Norwegian food, my husband and I frequent this place and have a great meal every time.

Tried the stew and sausage. my 1st attempts of traditional norwegian food, which was welcomed and enjoyed by travel friends as well. 4 stars only because I don't know what really good Norwegian food should or could taste like. Sausage to me seemed over cooked and the stew was hot...temperature, not spicy... I also really enjoyed the vegetables /sides that came w the entree. LOVE LOVE LOVE! I loved this place so much after our first visit, I forced my boyfriend to take me back a couple days later for a snack. During our first visit, I had the fish of the day, which was baked hake with potatoes, sour cream, pickled fennel, and carrots. Oh my goodness. Divine. The fish was cooked perfectly, the fennel was not too pickled or overwhelming (which is hard to do, since fennel has such a strong flavor), and the potatoes were perfectly done. The fish was a little salty, but the fennel complimented it wonderfully. My boyfriend had the meatballs of beef, which was also delicious! The gravy worked well with the flavor of the meatballs, and the mushy peas... I can't believe how much I enjoyed them. I basically cleaned them off of my boyfriend's plate. During our second visit, we shared the Norwegian cheese plate and a couple of beers. I was not disappointed by the choice of cheeses, and the beers on tap were great. I love the service though. Although the two gentlemen who were there on both days were not men of many words, they were very efficient, kind, knowledgeable and welcoming. Excellent local cuisine, we had an open-face sandwich of whale meat along with a cheese plate. The food was good and reasonably priced. The staff was also friendly and everybody seemed to be having a good time. read more

Good atmosphere, lots of drink option, nice staff. More of a locals/college internet bar/cafe, doesn't seem tourist-oriented. Bartenders speak English, but if you want special treatment because you don't speak the language, you should probably find another bar. read more

We had a terrific experience at Pingvinen. The food was exceptionally good. Braised reindeer with lingonberry was truly exceptional. The beer list is tremendous as well. The restaurant has a very casual ambience. This was probably the best meal I had in a week spent all over Norway. I will be recommending this restaurant to friends. read more

I had the reindeer burrito and my daughter had the meatballs and both were excellent! Good waitstaff for once too! Many beers to choose from and a beautiful neighborhood setting just 5 minutes from the mall. Really recommend you eat here rather than the overpriced, crowded dock areas! read more

Great beer and great food. Very good selection of local Norwegian beers as well as locally sourced food. My husband had the Wolffish which he has declared to be one of the best meals he has ever eaten. It had a lobster-like consistency. I had the fish casserole which was also excellent. Great, casual gastropub. I sat at the bar and had some dinner. The bartenders were really friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. I had the fish of the day, which was cod with veggies. Very simple, not fussy, but very good. I'd recommend a stop here if you're in Bergen. read more

We both had fish as a main for lunch! I had the steamed Pollock with garlic butter and fennel. The fennel was steamed with the fish so it was very nice, not fishy at all! The fennel was sweet, quite different compare to the fennel at home! My gf had the fish pie which she wasn't too keen. The whale steak was quite tasty but the potatoes and the groceries were almost cold. A friend had the fish pie, which was slightly better than the steak. A lot of beers to chose, I tried the lager as well as the an ipa described by the waiter as a "punch in the face". Cool staff, really friendly. read more

My friend and I stopped by Pingvinen for a drink after she read about it somewhere online... What a great find! This cute little pub is so cozy and has a really nice selection of local beers/ciders and authentic Norwegian food like whale steak, herring, and meatballs. The ambiance is really relaxed, in spite of it being quite packed on a Wednesday night around 8 PM. The crowd seemed to be made up of a fair number of fellow tourists, but I'd like to think we were all the "good" or at least "okay" kind of tourists- the ones that are trying to blend in and really experience the culture, rather than only eat fish and chips. The service was very nice and friendly, with the waitress letting everyone know that the kitchen was a bit backed up so food would take 30 minutes- I thought it was very considerate to warn people of this before they ordered so that they could factor this into their plans. I'd recommend this adorable bar for anyone seeking a nice, relaxing meal at a good price. read more

I'm Norwegian (living many years in the US) & found this wonderful. Authentic, traditional dishes. (Where else might one find "komla" - "kumpa" - "raspe baller" or potato dumplings on the menus, even in Norway?) My husband had the fish pie. (He loved it). I ordered the soup (broccoli being cultivated from 1970+, but made as l remember cauliflower soup, so traditional). Had to let my husband have some of it! And a small plate - the "fenalår" - cured lamb with potato salad & very "homemade", paper thin, flat bread (slightly buttered). I felt as if I was back in time at grandma's! We had the rhubarb as dessert. Less sweet as my husband likes it, but exactly the way I do. Take a chance & try this place. read more

Very cozy bar/pub/restaurant. Friendly service, self seating, homey and heavy Scandinavian comfort food. Large portions and good beer. We ordered the potato dumplings with lamb, fish with potato, and fish cake. They were all tasty, though very laden with potato. I didn't care for the dumplings but I loved what it came with. read more
