Found this place based on a recommendation from a random blog when researching Bergen. We weren't sure if we were to order at the bar or if we'd be waited on as we sat on some stools in front of the window. The staff was very pleasant and everything we ordered was delicious. I ordered the fish of the day (halibut) and my spouse ordered a stew and plukkfisk, both which were also tasty (I had to have a bite of it myself). Come here if you're a beer lover. While traveling through Norway, this pub had the best selection and least pretentious presentation of Norwegian and European beers. We didn't eat, so I can't speak for the food, but the drink prices were comparable to what you'd find elsewhere in Bergen. This place was such a refreshing place to be at after traveling so much. It had such a nice vibe to it, really nice lighting, and classic style Norwegian dishes. We ordered the meatballs, plukkfisk, potato bacon soup, and a cheese platter. The plukkfisk was so good that I am tempted to go back home and make my on when I get back! The meatballs were cooked perfectly with a nice side of potatoes, and the cheese platter was an arrangement of four great local cheeses. For me, Pingvinen only is 3.5 stars. After seeing such good reviews on here, I expected...well, a little more. We got 3 small dishes and two main courses which were all mediocre at best. Small dishes: Cheese platter - was okay, some of the cheese didn't seem too fresh Fenalar - okayish dish, lamb was good but potatoes were bland Lapskaus - highlight of my meal! everything was really tenderly cooked and potato was great Also flatbread came with all of these and was tasty. Based on the recommendations in Yelp, we walked across town from our Airbnb in Bergen to Pingvinen in search of authentic Norwegian cuisine and we were rewarded with a great meal. For everyone touring Norway, you should try the traditional food at least once. And if you are going to try it in Bergen, you probably want to try it here because we saw mainly locals hanging out. It was a crowded place at 9pm on a Friday, full of people grabbing a drink with friends over some popcorn or small plates. When we arrived, the service wasn't good because there was only 1 bartender working the whole place. After taking a seat at a communal table, we got menus brought to us. I got Fiskepudding (similar to a fish and leek quiche) and my husband got Kjøttkaker (meatballs). The Fiskepudding wasn't fishy and was good with the sauted onions. This place was recommended as serving authentic homestyle Norwegian cuisine. The restaurant was quite crowded for dinner, so we thought the food would be good, but there were some hit and misses. The potato and leek soup and the "Thursday Special - Potato Dumplings" dishes were very salty. These two dishes will jack up your blood pressure! The potato dumplings, which I guess should have been the stars of the dish were basically giant matzo balls with a texture that was more like bread that was pressed together tightly. I could not taste the potato in them. The salted lamb took over the entire dish with its saltiness, it was almost inedible. The slow cooked cow's neck had good flavor, but it could have used a little more slow-cooking, as some of the meat was hard to take off the bone. The Lapskaus was very good. It had the right balance of flavors and ingredients that made it tasty and warming. It was the dish that felt like home-cooking. The only other thing worth noting was the service. Although the waitress was friendly, there was a point in the meal that we felt she forgot about us. We waited for 45 minutes after finishing our starters to get our entrées, and we only got them because we had to get up from our table to ask her about them. People who sat down after us were already digging into their dishes. read more

The atmosphere here is very pub-ish, but the food is much better than just pub food. We ordered two specials including a Scandinavian meatball platter and fish cake. Both were delicious with interesting side dishes. The fish cake was excellently paired with shaved carrots that were enhanced by the buttery runoff from the fish cake. The meatball dish was reminiscent of our family Swedish meatball recipe with a side of lingonberries and roasted potatoes. All three together was like a party in my mouth. The staff was not especially friendly, but that might be a We-live-in-Bergen-and-are-tired-of-tourists-who-barely-speak-Norwegian-coming-to-our-pub kind of thing, and I'm totally cool with that. It was my last night in Norway, and I wanted to treat myself, so this was the most expensive meal of my trip and so very unmemorable. Overall, decent food at reasonable prices (for Norway), and above average service. That being said, the place is a little confusing for travelers. Pingvinen is a pub, not a restaurant and with that in mind know that you have to seat yourself. Seating is first come, first served - no matter what else the entrance may convey. The food itself is pretty good, fresh ingredients and made with some care, but it's also under seasoned and a bit bland. The Lamb sausages and fish entrée are both decent (though the potatoes and vegetables in the fish dish badly need seasoning). Things go awry with the Lamb stew because it's simply funky. The taste is a little off and I had to eat it with the accompanying buttered flat bread to get it down. If that sounds weird to you, know it was weird for me to eat it that way and to see it in writing. The beer and alcohol list has some great items and if you are interested in drinking, it's probably a great place to go. read more

Went here because of a friend's recommendation. We ordered the lapskaus, which was really tasty. It came with some flat bread sandwiched together with butter( love butter!). Our travel guide book recommended this restaurant for local fare. My husband chose mashed potato and fish with bacon on top and I had a lamb stew. All tasty good. Ambience is pleasant, traditional norwegian fare. However the prices on the bill were different than the menu prices. All were higher with one exception, which was lower.
