The conditions at the animal shelter are deeply concerning; the dogs appear forlorn and neglected, seemingly deprived of outdoor access. The odor in the dog area is overwhelming, reminiscent of decay, making it unbearable for visitors. My sister and I found it impossible to remain in that section due to the repugnant atmosphere. In stark contrast, the cat area was the only part that appeared to be maintained (reason for one star). It is disheartening to see the staff, many of whom were idly seated at computers, failing to address the needs of the dogs. This facility either requires immediate closure or a complete overhaul in leadership to ensure genuine care and effort are prioritized. County commissioners, your attention is urgently needed. There was a senior dig that was dumped at a park in south St Pete that Animal Control picked up. There was a lady that wanted to adopt the dog who had also offered to spend time at the shelter with this poor old girl until she could adopt her. Potential adopter was denied. Animal control euthanized the dog on Jan 10, 2025 because dog was old and arthritic. Did I mention there was someone who WANTED TO ADOPT THE DOG????? Shame on animal control for denying this dog a compassionate owner. Also, this potential adopter went immediately to the park when she saw the dog had been abandoned and told Animal Control that she would adopt and provide all needed care for the dog. This has broken the hearts of everyone who was worried about this dog and were prepared to donate towards any needed costs of care. read more

Just adopted a cat from a neighbor and went to Pinellas County Animal services and was met at my car by volunteers from SPCA who helped me sign in and directed me to the entrance. The intake clerk was friendly and knowledgeable and I had an appointment to get vaccines and an identity chip for my cat and license. All much less expensive than I expected and just a fine institution. I've been to the county tax collector office on Starkey and they were just as helpful and efficient. Pinellas County has government services that are well run and better than most other places. read more

I've gotten both of our babies here and all of my experiences here have been positive. The staff is helpful, kind and caring. They are obviously animal lovers. Both of our cats were fixed, vaccinated, and chipped here as well. They charge such a small fee it's nice to give them a bit more for the amount they give you. My adoption also came with starter food, toys, and more. On Long Island, our popular animal shelter charges about six times the amount for their services. It can be a challenge reaching them by phone, but they will call you back. read more

We went to see him and a volunteer was very helpful and answered many questions for me and let us take him outside. I recently visited this shelter three days in a row. Each day, there were countless volunteers walking dogs & answering all of my questions. The facility was clean, including all of the kennels, with fresh water in each kennel. There were charts along the walls to keep track of all the dogs' walks, feedings, etc. The office staff treated the animals with compassion & were extremely kind & helpful! I adopted a cat from Petsmart, who gets their animals from PCAS, and not only did she have the most severe respiratory infection I've ever seen, she also brought fleas home to my 4 other indoor cats. I was told her adoption paperwork stated she had received a one month treatment for fleas, but the rest was my responsibility. I went back to Petsmart and all their cats up for adoption were visibly infested with fleas. I have had several cats for many years, adopting from a few different facilities, and have never had this issue. I'm appalled that an organization dedicated to caring for animals would send them out to new homes with other pets infested with parasites that carry disease. I'm going to have to spend hundreds of dollars to treat my 5 cats. read more

We recently adopted our puppy from here and our experience was great. My son and I came in to view the adoptable dogs. We were immediately greeted by a lady who asked us what we needed help with. After viewing the adoptables in the main building, we wanted to see the dogs in the overflow (300 building) area. Tim came to take us there and show us around. His enthusiasm and care of the animals was apparent. He was very nice and helpful! We ended up falling in love with a puppy and were able to start the adoption process right away. Everyone who helped along the adoption process was awesome. We didn't encounter anything less than superb customer service. Remember that a lot of the people that work here are volunteers. And the regular staff are probably overworked and have to deal with stressful situations everyday. P.S. LOVE the videos from Jan- this is an awesome way to showcase the adoptables and is what helped to bring us in and adopt from here. They also are very current and responsive on their FB page. My dog is dead thanks to them. I was there two consecutive days looking for my lost dog, I filled a yellow form EACH day with info about the dog and also the owner. They took me to the cages to see if she was there, no, I did not see her. Back the following day and was the same. Later on I found that she WAS there the first day I went looking for her, she was not in the cages, she had been euthanized two hours before I got there and nobody informed me of that (I found that 3 days later, and not because they notified me). Why filling forms that they do not read? What kind of organization is this? The veterinarian Erik Pindal euthanized her in exactly 8 minutes (I have records) after she came to his hands. I later found that she has been hit by a car and taken by a passerby to a veterinary emergency clinic, since Animal Services was closed at that moment, where they gave her an excellent care for 24 hours and she was eating well, then the morning after, the clinic called to Animal Services to pick up the dog. As soon she arrived to the center went right away to Dr. Pindal, with the records from the clinic, where it was written very clearly that she ate well and was stable, and as I said before, he euthanized her without performing any tests at all, he did not give her the four days holding period for stray dogs before making any decision. Did not give her ANY chance to found her owner, not even one day, not even just few hours, time enough for me to find her, since I was there just two hours after he killed her. I bent his ear for about 30 minutes, telling him how bad everything's gone 'sideways'...and Gary hung on my every word so much so that I could tell he himself was 'feeling my angst' however being extremely professional about it...even gave me his Direct Line! WE discussed my options to the hilt, set up a Case#, AND made an appointment for a Pinellas County Animal Control Services Officer to meet the complaintant over the weekend Saturday 2/29/2020. This is an excellent department of county services. Yes there is not a lot of people there to help you visit with possible dogs because they need more people to volunteer to help love on the animals. The always have plenty of animals to choose from and they are fully vetted. I have adopted 2 beautiful dogs from here on two separate occasions. They also work with many of the local rescue groups to help find dogs their furever home. Animal services is not just for adoptions they also have low cost spay and neuter as well as other services available. read more

My adoption experience here was wonderful, The volunteers were super helpful, courteous and my wait time was short. Upon entering the shelter, you register on an ipad which sped things up. My pit bull passed away on July 20, 2018 and I was going to wait a while to adopt another one but on August 26, they had a free adoption day. I adopted Basil (formerly known as Bam Bam). I walked 5 pitties and loved each one for different reasons, but Basil was the best on leash and he was a little older so he'd be easier to deal with. The shelter socializes their adoptable dogs. They have signs on the cages like "Bam Bam loves to play with Kylie" so I was assured he was good with other dogs. The gravy was after I brought him home and he was great with my 3 cats and my roommate's dog. When I was looking at the dogs, I was allowed to take the dogs out of their kennels myself and bring them in the back to dog runs where I could let them off leash and play with them. I will definatley adopt from here again. I was lucky to get a fully vaccinated, neutered, vetted, sweet, housebroken microchipped boy for free! I fogot to mention the free starter kit - small bag of dried food, 2 tennis balls (that are now shredded), greenies and her license. read more

I have had two kinds of contact with Animal Control. One is when I visited to adopt a cat. Everyone was very helpful. The cats have current shots, are spayed or neutered, and have other information such as age and whether they were a stray or surrender. It is very organized. They can't control what they have available, it being whatever they get. When I was there they were heavy on adult male cats and kittens. I had decided on a small young adult female. I did in the end get one that was from Animal Control but had been placed in a pet store. I would still say check Animal Control first then the participating pet stores. My other contact with Animal Control is because there is a feral cat problem in my neighborhood. I have trapped some and pick up has always been quick. The officers are efficient and well trained in safely moving wild cats from trap to transport cage. One also took a few minutes from pickup runs to check on people feeding feral cats which is illegal in the county. They really care about doing a good job. Overall this is one of the best government entities I have ever had contact with. read more

We looked here to try to adopt a dog but there weren't many people looking to help us find one. This place had only larger dogs (which was okay) but it was loud and had a funky smell in the area where the kept the dogs. We asked to see one of the dogs and was reluctantly helped. My wife and I, got a Black Lab when she was 5 from our VET, Dr. St. John, and had her for 10.5 years. When it was her time, she told us so. After two weeks, her passing left us with a terrible hole in our hearts. Went to the humane society, but those dogs were just too young and quite frisky, for us, 65 year olds. A neighbor suggested Pinellas County Animal Services in Largo. We picked a white 7.5 yr. old stray, they named her Ethel. Ethel ? A 55lb, Coon-hound mix. She recently had babies, but do not know what happened to them. After Animal Services gave us the paperwork package and she was spayed and chipped , we brought her home. Our Vet gave her a 2nd checkup, and felt she was closer to 8.5 yrs. old. After almost a year, she still shows signs, of her days on the run. She shreds palm fronds and a good wooden stick or limb. She furrows the grass for acorns and unmentionables, and she will give you a good play on the rug. I do take her to work 3x a week, where she romps under tree canopy, where a cool westerly breeze blows. She has brought joy to our hearts, and in return, she is treated royally as she has found her Forever home. read more
