The price per month is affordable (for me, it is about $35 per month), the location itself is big, and it is a community center. While I haven't participated in any of the local events, I really appreciate that this place is meant to be inclusive to the entire community. This means that as a community center, they have special things offered for children and for senior citizens as well. I was considering taking my daughter here for their theater program which I know is excellent and provides great training for this. Moving onto the gym itself -- they offer Hot Yoga, Vinyasa, and all kinds of other Yoga. There are many kinds of in-person classes that tend to be offered here. Even during CoronaVirus, they have been offering classes from their teachers on Facebook just so that people can still exercise without endangering themselves. There is a massive pool in the back and the bathroom has both a steam room and a massage chair that can be used. This place always serves coffee and free / clean towels for gym members to wash their faces. At a premium price, they offer pilates for those that are interested in this. There is a weight room for lifting weights, exercise machines, a Peloton machine and a room for spinning bikes in the back (not the quality that I'm accustomed to, but still, I found this kind of cool). Overall, I really appreciate the hospitality that this gym shows in terms of its customer service and what is literally offered to its members. There is also a daycare center here if this is needed. I like that this gym makes an effort towards inclusion which means that they encourage older people to stay in good and healthy shape. While I might be working out next to someone that is 60 years old, I really appreciate that this gym and the atmosphere here is inclusive to its entire community which also means its elders and children within the community too. This place is a hidden treasure and it would be hard to find other places that can match how welcoming and caring this place is.

Several musicians played nice music, there was good food at a couple of kiosks on the back, and a beer and wine vendor. Everything was in support of... so be honest, I'm not sure but it was about birds. I will be coming back to more shows here. It's a very nice way to spend an evening.

The non profit Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) has its origins as the Coconut Grove Audubon Society…read more(CGAS), founded April 16, 1915, as Dade County's first Audubon organization. CGAS members met in homes and worked to advocated for bird and wildlife protection, protection of birds hunted for their plumes with the hiring of game wardens, ornithological education for school children and the public, and they also collaborated in the movement to establish Everglades National Park. WWII led to the CGAS becoming inactive in 1942. Led by Charles Brookfield, then employed by National Audubon Society, a new chapter of the National Audubon Society was established in 1947. The Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) has been on the frontlines of conservation and environmental protection issues in South Florida. The mission of the Tropical Audubon Society is to "conserve and restore South Florida ecosystems, focusing on birds, wildlife, and their habitats. The Tropical Audubon Society has been headquartered at the 1932 Doc Thomas House since 1976. It has been designated a Miami-Dade County Historic Site, a Florida Heritage Site, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Arden Hayes Thomas, Jr. was a pharmacist from Indiana who moved to South Miami in 1925, and opened the O. K. Drug Store just months before the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926. His business grew to managing two stores on Sunset Drive and Thomas invested in a 2.5 acres of property on the south side of Sunset Drive in the subdivision of High Pines. He commissioned Robert Fitch Smith, one of the first six graduates of the University of Miami architecture program, to create a home that would look like part of the piney landscape. He created a rustic house in the Florida wood-frame vernacular style of architecture that exemplified the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement. Created out of cypress, oak, pine mahogany, and local limestone, the home has detailed woodwork, a limestone fireplace, and built in features. Fitch went on to a storied career as an architect, taught at the University of Miami, and served on the first City of Miami Planning Board. In the 1950's Doc Thomas retired and traveled the world. A life long conservationist and bachelor, Doc Thomas decided to leave his home and the surrounding 2 acres of woodlands to the TAS. He deeded the property to them in December of 1974 and he passed away exactly one year later. Since 1976 the house has functioned as the home of Tropical Audubon Society while the surrounding acreage now serves as the Steinberg Nature Center. I discovered this delightful nature oasis and historic home in the middle of South Miami while eating lunch in the area. The gate is open so you can walk around what feels like a a secret garden. On Saturday, January 7, 1-2pm or 3-4pm the Tropical Audubon Society will host a public tour of the historic Doc Thomas House headquarters which has recently undergone structural repair and restoration. The tour is free although donations are welcome and lasts for 1 hour guided by a Tropical Audubon docent. The tour focuses on Arden Hayes "Doc" Thomas and Robert Fitch Smith and explores the near-native Steinberg Nature Center campus. The Steinberg Nature Center contains Pine Rockland, a globally endangered ecosystem. It is only located in south Miami, the Keys, and parts of the Bahamas. Pine Rockland once covered 180,000 acres or 12 percent of Miami but by the time Miami turned 100 in 1996, less than 2 percent remained. Today only fragments of the Pineland remain. It is a critical refuge for endangered plants and animals, some not found anywhere else in the world. Come out and learn about this important ecosystem and the pioneers who lived here and built South Miami.

Hands on Miami has been an amazing discovery for me…read more I have been a regular volunteer since January- giving me plenty opportunities to get involved with the community. But while i have always had a desire to volunteer and get involved, i also had a fear of the commitment entailed and the complications that might arise out of my already busy schedule. What is so perfect about Hands On is that it's a flexible volunteering model with no long term commitments, no background checks, no frills or complicated processes. I simply went on the site, found an activity of interest, which to me was working with teens and/or kids and signed up for a specific date. I've been hooked ever since- volunteering my time every month at Miami Bridge- an emergency youth shelter for abused, neglected and abandoned teens ages 10 to 17 and I love it. Every activity is assigned a project leader who takes responsibility for the group and can be a resource on that day for help with directions, etc... I can honestly say it's been a wonderful resource for me in finding ways to get involved and make a difference. Definitely check them out at handsonmiami.org and sign up for an event.

They are a great central source of various community initiatives and projects in the Dade County area. It does not matter how old your are or what you like to do, there is something for everyone @ HOM that wants to give back to their community. There are projects just on the weekend, weekday days and evenings, just for kids, just for adults, for the whole family to join too. So really time can't be an excuse! There is an hour orientation that you participate is that gives you all the info you need to get started. You can check out their website(http://www.handsonmiami.org) for the next one. The people @ HOM are top notch too. Really friendly and go out of their way to help you every step of the way. Definitely worth checking if you want to get involved in your community!!!

I wish that they would be able to expand to offer their outstanding services in other major south Florida cities that are critically in need of a program like the WOW Center. They offer art, music, technology classes and take their clients on field trips as well other fun community events.

This weekend was my first time actually being inside of a Ronald McDonald House. I came here with…read moremy volunteer group. Children and their families are very blessed to have a facility like this that allows their family members to be close to them during a difficult time. Everything in the facility is pretty much donated by various organizations. From the food to the rooms these families are provided for. The facility is kept clean and for the most part looks very comfortable. If I had the funds I would pour into these facilities as well because insurance only covers so much.
