The owner of Cook & Gardener, Liz, provided us with a beautiful 7-week-old kitten when a stray…read moremother gave birth on her property. The day we came to pick up the kitty, we noticed gunk had crusted in her ear, which quickly became an infection. We took her for an emergency vet visit as it badly affected her equilibrium. She developed this in the intervening days between the vet visit Liz took her to (VetCo), and the day we picked her up for adoption (about 3-4 days). The kitten herself was free, which seemed a nice gesture at the time. Since then, our circumstances have changed, and Liz offered to take her back. However, things unfortunately took a turn for the worse when the infection and subsequent medical expenses were brought up. She made it a point to make personal and financial assumptions about us, yet didn't voice her concerns when we initially wanted to adopt, claiming, "I'm not your mom." We never brought up our financials, she assumed. While we understand the financial and emotional commitment to adopt a pet, the unexpected health problems this poor kitten came to us with could have been prevented before hand-off. During our phone call, when we asked for reimbursement of our kitten's medication costs (since the infection had developed during Liz's care, and the kitten was amongst a litter with a plethora of other infections such as pink eye with pus, respiratory, and underweight issues), she threw herself into a fit and hastily attempted to end the conversation. The kitten was dreadfully underweight when we adopted her, and we fed her until she was at a healthy weight again. Liz denied any hearing loss when we had initial concerns, but we later found out that due to the infection the kitten had under her care, the result was profoundly conclusive. When the cost of the medication was mentioned, she immediately became interruptive and combative, though we stressed no animosity toward her. Her words to that were, "Too late." You can love her shop all you want; just please adopt from her only to get these poor animals away from her so-called "care."

My siblings and I enjoyed wandering around this adorable shop after a lunch down the street. We…read morehave a shared love of gift shops and the similar, so it just felt right to pop in here and see what they had to offer. We were initially taken aback by the vast offering of Jellycat plush toys. The employee (owner?) who was in explained that they offer a wide selection of Jellycats, many of which are considered rare or very challenging to get ahold of. In addition to the plush toys, they also had a large variety of perfumes and perfume testers to sniff. I was really excited to see one of my favorite perfumes, Juliette Has a Gun, available in such variety. If my suitcase wasn't already jam packed heading out here, I would have totally purchased a bottle as a gift to myself. This was an adorable shop and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Unfortunately, my experience was extremely uncomfortable. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was being watched and profiled. I was followed closely around the store and repeatedly told not to touch items, which made it impossible to browse or shop normally. At one point the owner was standing right next to me and speaking in a way that felt more like being scolded than helped. They won't let you look around the shop without following you around and asking you not to touch anything. Oh also they have a million perfume testers which they get mad if you smell them. Literally you cannot smell open samples of perfumes or they scream at you not to touch them. The overall attitude was very hostile and unwelcoming, which was surprising in a neighborhood where most small business owners are warm and appreciative of customers. I left feeling really disappointed because I had intended to give them my business. After mentioning the experience to a few other locals, I learned that others had similar interactions there. I hope the owners reconsider how they treat customers because the environment felt unnecessarily negative and uncomfortable. Ps. Same lady in all the other review pictures ! Just look at all the reviews and all the people have similar experiences

The Den is the kind of store you want to shop in if you are looking to decorate a man cave, an office, or a tv room where your wife gives you a little freedom to put your own touches. It's a men's store and a great place for men and women alike to buy gifts for guys. Signs, books, chachkis, wine and bar items, games, steins, beautiful model ships, and even some clothes...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. My wife hates when I step into this place because I can spend all day browsing and brooding over the fact that I don't have a man cave to put all of the great stuff they have here at The Den (though she doesn't have her own 'space' either). Things are a bit pricey...like most places in Peddler's Village...but you can find some really cool stuff here. The website only has an extremely limited inventory because they keep the best stuff in the store for foot traffic so don't judge the store by its website.

I would definitely stop back in. My only complaint is that I had a couple of questions about some items and the only person working was on the phone the entire time I was in the store (it was a personal call which is the only reason it kind of annoyed me) I could barely get her attention to check out and she seem a little annoyed at the interruption so I put the additional items back since I couldn't ask, I really just wanted to check prices since some things weren't labeled but I felt weird interrupting already. I've worked in a lot of retail jobs and everywhere I've worked that would have been a major issue so I think it just caught me off guard. I'm please with the items I got though.

I wanted sconces that would hold taper candles, not the electric sort that leave you having to hide the trailing cord. So I decide to run to Sweet Magnolia to replace a candle that had recently burnt out completely when, lo and behold!, there is the most gorgeous pair of gold-leafed wall sconces hanging right before my eyes! This is why I love Sweet Magnolia - you can find such elegant pieces here when you least expect it. I also appreciate that their prices don't put a huge dent in your wallet. $58 for the pair? I'll take them! The store also carries the greatest soy candles ever by Aquiesse which last a rather long time and come in several delightful fragrances. They also carry an array of other home goods - Forte teas, place settings, bath and body products, stationery, baby gifts, and jewelry. Definitely a great little shop for finding last minute gifts or a treat for yourself. I've seen similar items at other stores like Anthropologie for twice the price, so why not patronize a local entrepreneur instead?
