    Tag Burger and fries

Value, flavor, and good portions. The tag burger was juicy, a little crunch of the onion rings, & sweetness of the BBQ sauce. Fries were hot, crunchy & saltt...like almost perfect! Milkshake was thick, creamy & hit the spot. Much more satisfying meal than our dinner in Susanville for sure.

I was really happy I went to Pine Shack today. The girl working the front was really kind when I was a couple quarters short for my order. The food here is always great and hot and today was just like any other day. I love that they put real banana in the banana milkshake and the girls working today gave me free French fries with my meal. Super sweet place.

INSANE, after memories of coming here as a child we decided to return and see if it was the same hype and it did not disappoint. For $30 we got a banana chocolate shake, ribs with all the fixin's, as well as a burger. First we got the shake which had nice sized chunks of banana in it and was so creamy. Then the ribs and burger came out and they were devoured instantly. Smothered in BBQ sauce and delicious

    Chocolate vanilla swirl

As of July 1 2024, this isn't closed! They are just serving a very limited menu of hot food due to a kitchen remodel, but they have all the ice cream. I recommend the chocolate malt (they don't advertise as having malt but they do) and the butterscotch shake. The chocolate vanilla swirl was great. We came here 2 days in a row.

My mom has been coming here since before I was born. I started very early. This is THE place to eat. The best shakes you'll ever have in your life and some of the best food you'll ever get. I send this one photo to the aunts and cousins in my family all across the country and they instantly hate me... that's how good this food is and jealous they get. Generational food that I can't wait to share with my kids one day.

Love the plain ol chocolate cone! And oddly, their bean and cheese burrito was surprisingly filling.

Best milkshakes in town! So many flavors! Only downside is the line can be long in the summer- but it moves quickly!

As we needed a break from the monotony and The Oney Frosty in Town was open, we stopped in for some delicious soft serve. This is a down home friendly place where I'm sure that if you live within 20 miles, everyone knows your name. The free reading material on one table reflects the area ranch culture and we caught one conversation about someone that had just come home after a long time away. You can also buy a locally-appropriate coffee cup for your troubles as well. The chalkboard menu above the counter is heavily weighted towards their broad burger choices. The soft serve choices are on the far right, with the shake flavors on a separate board. Gayle ordered a "small" swirl cone, while I ordered a "small" cherry shake. Both were delicious and more than we thought we were ordering. We sat outside, enjoyed some light conversation, and too soon enough we were back on the road. We really hope that we'll pass this way again.

We arrived around…read moremidday and once we'd gotten our hotel room sorted, we realized that after hours on the road eating gas station snacks, we were pretty hungry for a real meal. It's New Years Day 2026 and we assumed that most non-chain-brand places in a small town like this would be closed, but we gave Side Iron BBQ a call and were pleasantly surprised to find that they were open. Upon entering the place, we immediately knew we'd made a good choice. Side Iron is located inside the Pioneer Building and is dripping with legit old-school frontier ambiance combined with touches of classic Americana. There's an antique piano and fully-functional vintage pinball machine in the entryway, and as you pass into the main dining tall you'll find a full-scale pool table, a shelf of classic board games, a foosball game, and even some well-maintained acoustic guitars placed around, all of which invite visitors to not just scarf down a meal, but to hang out and have a great time. I've had the good fortune to eat BBQ in Texas numerous times and it has basically ruined California BBQ for me - certainly nothing I've had in the Bay Area can really compete with what I've had in Texas. Despite that, I had a good feeling about Side Iron so we went ahead and ordered a variety of items - brisket, pulled pork, a sausage link, fried okra, mac and cheese, jalapeno bacon corn, and even a burger. I'm delighted to report that this was hands-down the best BBQ I've ever had in California, and is right up there with the best BBQ I've ever eaten, period. The smoked brisket in particular was a real standout: tender, juicy, and with delightfully crispy burned edges. I seriously cannot overstate how good everything was. If Side Iron was located within 50 miles of San Francisco, there would've been a line of "food influencers" three blocks long and we would've paid 2-3X as much for this meal. The fact that we were the only patrons on New Years Day and enjoyed this incredible feast for a fraction of the price we would've paid closer to home is genuinely incredible. If you like BBQ and you're EVER anywhere near Susanville, you absolutely cannot miss the chance to try Side Iron!

I told them I was taking it home so I'd have 20 min drive & would love a hot mocha now while I wait and shake for desert. I got a taco salad and fried zucchini with a shake- and talk about not worth it.... The shake came out first which wasn't a huge concern until 25 minutes later when I'm still standing there with no mocha, no salad and a very melted shake. They finally gave me the salad after 45 minutes and when I asked for money back for mocha they just made one quick (and lacking the extra shots of espresso I paid for). I came home and was CHARGED $14 + $5 for meat For a salad with 2tbsp of toppings, not even a tomato. There was a scoop of corn with sour cream and 3 tiny pieces of chicken. I was so angry I almost went back. The zucchini was greasy and burned. Shake I put in the freezer and ate when it came a thick and there was about .5 cup left (I had to also scrape the whip off since when I said no whip they again just didn't do it right). Again, wish I could say something nice about it besides it's a pretty lawn, however, this was a huge waste of $50 and I'll never return.

This seasonal bar and hotspot wasn't too busy on this Thursday for a late lunch. This woodsy themed bar and restaurant overlooks the river and has indoor and outdoor seating. The park fire had just started, and everyone was a little on edge, but this restaurant took our mind off it as soon as the wonderful food and drinks came our way. We had some great margaritas and Moscow mules to start off. We tried the favorite smash burgers and fries; a well seasoned homemade burger with several different toppings of your choice primarily their homemade barbecue type sauce, grilled onions, cheese, on a brioche bun. It melted in your mouth and had a gourmet unique flavor that was unexpected for such a small town ! Did I mention that it was wagyu beef?! Service and atmosphere was everything you'd ask for in this small town restaurant.. This is a must try if in the area! be sure to call to check for their current hours and check out their Facebook page or website. They have big plans for the area and it sounds like they're going to open camping spots or glamping spots that go right down to the river near the restaurant and bar.
