We drove a half hour only to find they closed an hour and a half early. They could improve by sticking to their posted hours.

My boyfriend and my friend and I stopped here to eat. We all got ice cream and it started to melt before we could eat it. We also got food my order was over cooked and I couldn't eat it at all of are fries were over cooked. I know that there was a lots of people ordering food, but that gives no excuse for how the food was cooked. We are out of town and we expected good food, but we were very disappointed. We will never come back here again. We wasted money at your restaurant and I hope nobody else comes back to this place because of the service and the food was not great. Overall good meal. Burger was good. Only thing I would change is to replace the romaine lettuce with iceberg which is more traditional and holds up to the heat of a burger patty. Value, flavor, and good portions. The tag burger was juicy, a little crunch of the onion rings, & sweetness of the BBQ sauce. Fries were hot, crunchy & saltt...like almost perfect! Milkshake was thick, creamy & hit the spot. Much more satisfying meal than our dinner in Susanville for sure. read more

Pine Shack's burger patties took a big step back this year. Perhaps it's due to cutting costs or trying to keep menu prices down, but the burger patties no longer have the signature Pine Shack flavor and juiciness that I'm used to. The fries and shakes are still quite good, but this has been one of my favorite burgers until now, and I'd gladly pay $9+ for the classic Pine Shack burger prior to this year's alterations. Whatever changes were made to the burger-prep process, I'd suggest changing them back to the way they were. Love Pine Shack and just want to see it thrive. read more

Been going to pine shack frosty for over 50 years! Although ownership has changed the food is still as good. Best place for getting a thick milkshake on a hot summers day. Usually a long line to order but the wait isn't too long and well worth it. read more

INSANE, after memories of coming here as a child we decided to return and see if it was the same hype and it did not disappoint. For $30 we got a banana chocolate shake, ribs with all the fixin's, as well as a burger. First we got the shake which had nice sized chunks of banana in it and was so creamy. As of July 1 2024, this isn't closed! They are just serving a very limited menu of hot food due to a kitchen remodel, but they have all the ice cream. I recommend the chocolate malt (they don't advertise as having malt but they do) and the butterscotch shake. The chocolate vanilla swirl was great. We came here 2 days in a row. read more

Came here thinking garlic fries would be awesome whilst out geocaching. We asked one of the girls if they had thatlic fries, "I don't know" was her answer. Then we ordered Cole slaw and banana peanut butter shakes. Another girl comes up and says "we won't have it til mid June cuz it goes along with the chicken" I saaiad, "what does Cole slaw have to with chicken?" I stopped by Pine Shack Frosty during a day I spent in Chester while hiking the PCT this summer. PSF has a wide variety of ice cream flavors and toppings. I had a regular-sized chocolate shake with crushed Reese's peanut butter cups and Butterfingers added. The shake tasted amazing and had a really great thickness to it: in that ideal range where it could be sipped with a jumbo straw or scooped with a spoon. read more

I hate to give any place a poor rating but this one was earned: Every table top in the place was dirty. My napkin stuck to the table we did sit at. Paid for an iced tea but they were actually out. Bathrooms - both - were dirty. One had a running toilet that looked like it regularly overflows to the floor drain. And the food - although the broasted chicken and onion rings tasted good, they had a "hasty exit" for both myself and my dining partner. We try to support local dining whenever we travel but this is a reminder why a well-cleaned McDonalds will catch my eye in the future. The only plus was the nice gal who took our order. read more

I only came here for a caramel shake but this place has so much to offer. My husband had a cherry shake and it was one of the best shakes I have ever had. Their menu is all over the place so you will find something that you will eat. A place like Pine Shack Frosty is what I look for when I travel. Pine Shack is ICONIC Chester! During the summer, and especially around the 4th of July, you can always see a pretty long line outside Pine Shack Frosty. But don't worry! It moves pretty quickly! Order outside and pickup your orders inside. My family is ALL about the oversized soft-serve cones and we try to get one daily while we're here. Their shakes are also always delicious, but usually a little too big for me. Great to share though! Their French fries are the best in town! Don't forget to order some! It's like the potatoes are dipped in corn starch or something. The fries are crisp, because they have a light coating on them, but then perfectly soft on the inside. Again, definitely the best french fries in town. And recently we discovered the Hot Pastrami sandwich. It has a bit too much mustard for my liking, but everything else about it is perfection. Warm pastrami, melted cheese, soft hoagie roll, with cool crisp iceberg lettuce. So yummy! Their BLT was classically prepared with lightly toasted white bread, lots of crisp bacon, juicy tomato, and lots of cool crisp iceberg lettuce. Pine Shack isn't reinventing the wheel. They're doing simple classics really well, in a super casual family spot. Outdoor picnic tables and umbrellas are on a sunny patio next to Pine Shack, in addition to several indoor air conditioned booths and tables. We were in town for the weekend and were told by our host that this is a classic stop that their family has visited for generations. It seems among other reviews that nostalgia factor ranks high in the ratings. As noobs to the area, though, we took the Pine Shack Frosty on face value - it's essentially a local incarnation of a Fosters Freeze with less air circulation and off-brand "catsup". The prices are great, the food is classic no-frills American fare, but the service isn't especially exuberant. The fries (large, $2.75) seems like they were double- or triple-fried. None of us could handle more than a few, so this is great item to share with a crowd. The above-and-beyond highlight of this place - and the real reason to stop in - is their shakes (30 flavors available, $3.50). I'm pretty sure it's vanilla soft serve mixed with Torani (pump) syrup, since my friend's shake was only Raspberry-flavored half-way down. There also aren't any flavors of ice cream on display, but our Chocolate-Marshmallow shake was dang tasty! This place isn't trying especially hard, but if you're in the area and want a quick dose of soft serve, check em' out! It's hard to go wrong with sugar and...well, sugar. ;-) read more

Every small town in the Sierras has THAT spot. The spot that has been there forever, with the same menu, the same paint job, the same kind staff, and the same excellent food. The Pine Shack Frosty is easily the best one of these I've eaten at! The food truly punches above it's price point and blows away restaurants charging $18-20 for a burger and fries. Our meal, including a bacon burger, ribs, coleslaw, baked beans, and a shake came to just under $30 with tip and left us full to the point of bursting. I'd talk about how each item we ordered was excellent, but I'd run out of room. I'll just leave it at EXCELLENT! The chocolate banana shake was the stand out piece of the meal. With full banana chunks mixed evenly throughout the high quality ice cream, the shake really blew us away. In fact, the shake was so good that the only reason I wanted to stop at the Pine Shack Frosty while we were near Almanor was because I remembered how good the shakes were when I visited as a kid. And nothing has changed! The menu was the same, the order window, and the food. If you are ever anywhere near Almanor, just look for the green and white A-frame and don't stop until you get there! read more

Not only are you paying twice in tax they get get two charges on the card for one meal. Asked about it and the gal just said this is how we do it. This is a GREAT place to stop for a snack, a milkshake, a soft serve cone or lunch. Their menu is surprisingly extensive for a burger joint and they have lots of mix-ins to make a custom shake. We stop here at least once a summer. (Been coming up here for years.) This last time we wanted a snack after being on Lake Almanor all day... so we stopped in and enjoyed the chicken strips and fries basket. The chicken strips were big and meaty and not greasy.... the fries were plentiful. And beware... if you order the Large Fries.... you get A LOT of fries. Easily can be shared with 3 people. Their Large Fries is like 3 of the small order. They aren't super fast in getting your food out but the service is good. They are super organized and it's surprising since it seems like it's run by a bunch of high schools kids. But these kids know what they are doing. Love it! It's kinda small inside but they have a small patio area too. I think most people get their food to-go because there's always a line out front.
