There's a horse arena...a really big one with stands for the audience, plenty of places to explore and trail walk, lots of local wild flowers in bloom (watch out we did find a few patches of poison oak-"leaves of 3, let it be")! There's a lovely picnic area, many playgrounds for the kids, a baseball diamond and much more. We were fortunate enough to have our camp cooks on site for a remarkably good lunch with entrees consisting of a sun dried tomato pasta, bbq chicken with a ricotta cheese topping, pulled pork sandwiches, slaw, and a baby greens salad with cherry tomatoes; dessert cookies that were "out of this world" (smores-oatmeal and raisin & chocolate chip) Camp folks really know how to put on a good spread. Host your next event in Ione if you need lots of space, need to accommodate lots of people and would like a beautiful and nature filled venue!

Adj: Hilltop Handy Family Park with a Happy View…read more This is one of Folsom's hidden gems in our books. We visit Folsom to meet friends and to explore and do nature-type activities as well as shopping and discovered Handy Family Park on one occasion. Handy Family Park is apparently one of Folsom's most elevated parks. Set on a hilltop, it's a lovely neighborhood park. Though it's smaller compared to regional parks, it's actually pretty big, it's just that it's atop a hill so not all of the space is usable for sports courts, but all of it is scenic and most of it is recreational space. You can reach this park by taking the E. Bidwell exit on Hwy 50, and then it's a really quick drive past the Costco and the In-N-Out, then take Scholar Way, and it's at 1560 Cavitt Dr. You can't walk directly into the park from the parking lot b/c you have to go UP to the top of the "hill", so you can either take the stairs or there's a longer path/ramp for ADA accessibility. Thankfully, the bathrooms are at the start of the park/bottom of the stairs so those who need to use the restrooms can get to them without going into the park. Once you climb up, you're rewarded with an amazing overlook of several neighborhoods and the rolling hills of Folsom. I've only been here in the daytime, but I imagine that it'd be extra beautiful after dark when the lights shine and sparkle all over for a night view. The park offers a lighted baseball field, a huge soccer field, a basketball court, open fields for free recreation, and multiple walking pathways that wind around for a nice stroll throughout the park while you get a nice panoramic view no matter which way you look. In addition to the amenities above, there's a barbecue with a couple of picnic tables under a covered pavilion at the edge of the hilltop so it's really a nice place for a picnic or little party. There's also a couple of kids play structure (one for bigger kids and one for the littles). My kids enjoyed playing here and running around when they were younger, but we still like coming here whenever we're in Folsom b/c Handy Family Park got such a scenic view and it's usually not too crowded. It is always a great place to bring our own picnic and hang out as a family in "nature" not too far from all the conveniences of civilization.

Volcano Park is the park located in Volcano. Mike drop. Seriously, there is a small public park…read morelocated in the small village of Volcano nestled in the Sierra foothills. Volcano is an old charming mining town with a long history. Their park is a small, yet charming plot of land in the center of town. The park has no parking, but you can park in a public lot and walk. Access is very easy past a donation bin in which you should throw some cash. The park is below the main road with a few tables and benches next to the outdoor theatre. It is rather small and not as well kept as many suburban parks, but it is a nice place to stop and walk around or have a small picnic. There are no playgrounds or other features, but they do have a few memorials. This park is typical of most rural parks and likely site of many local gatherings and more than a few proposals. It is a little better than most, but the size and amenities are sparse. Nevertheless, it is a great park for Volcano and their visitors.

Folsom, Livermore Park: Park Ranger Dennis…read more 8/17/26 Very kind and helpful park ranger. I lost my keys, had my puppies loaded in truck and was aimlessly trying to find key fob for about 20 min. I asked him as he was driving by if he happened to see a key fob during his maintenance of park. He pulled over, offered to help look, said no to worry and then found keys within 5 min! Aside from the heroics of him finding the keys, he has a great presence at the park and helped/spoke to a few other people that same morning. Thanks Dennis!

Even at 8:15-8:30 PM on a weekday you can't see play more than one game before people start going up to you saying you can't stay on the court for yourself winner stays. Then they queue up and all and I watched someone just finish a game and queue but we were waiting a lot longer and there were complaints by not even the queue people who let us go ahead of them because some people were calling us out and getting upset that we didn't put our paddles in the board. Good (12) Pickleball Courts but they have exploded in popularity and you have to wait a long time or play later and later now. If it was just me, I'd wait later to play or go on off hours but friends rather go at certain times. Folsom should build more.

It is a day use area along the North Fork Mokelumne River in Valley Springs, CA. Another thing to note is the place is called Big Bar Launch but it is not a boat launch. Parking and use are free. There is a bathroom but I sure as heck did not use it. It is a pit vault with no sink or any source of potable water, so it is probably a good idea bring your own sanitizer if you must use the restroom. Access to the river is a short distance. The access is rocky and there is no beach like areas. Swimming is not recommended, the river currents are swift. I saw skilled rafters and kayakers on the water. When I say skilled, they were rigged up with professional gear not a $1.25 floaty. In the summer, it is hot out there with not a lot of shade along the water. There is an area that has calmer water like a creek near the bridge. I didn't stay long after a large family left, that area was a bit too remote and filled with shrubbery. I stayed more towards the river next to the parking lot. It was open and visible with more folks.

I was just bebopping around the Sierra foothills on a lazy weekend day this past summer. I was in…read moreJackson, CA, driving around. I happen to drove out to the Kennedy Tailing Wheels Park. Admission and parking is FREE. The park is created around the remains of the Kennedy Mine's Tailing wheels. The city even threw in a section for a dog park, but that area is a sad dirt patch with no shade. The main attraction of the park is the glass enclosed tailing wheel #4. It's 68 feet in diameter with 178 buckets. Quite an impressive sight. The Kennedy gold mine operations ran from mid 1850s through 1942 (the government shut down the operations to focus on due WW II efforts). The original wheels were located up the hill closer to the mine operations and moved to the park for display. The whelks were reassembled and laid out in reverse order. Wheel #4 is the only wheel restored. A portion of the financial assistance came from the local community. Awesome. Wheels 1 and 2 are across the street on the Kennedy mine property, not much of it is left. The Kennedy mine is now a tourist attraction. You can walk across the street to view wheels 1 and 2. They're viewable from afar behind the fence. Not much to look at though, just crumbled aged pieces of wood. Wheel #3 is near wheel #4. That wheel is also in disrepair and falling apart, but somewhat better condition than 1&2. Behind wheel #4 is Indian Gulch. That's the area where the mine waste carried from the tailing wheels ended up. In 1914, a dam was built so the mine waste was impounded to the dam basin. Another thing is the park is not flat and has slight elevation, and the strolling paths are not paved and have steps. The sights are viewable from the pave sidewalk/roadway. Amenities: restroom, picnic benches, strolling path shaded in areas by old Oak trees, and dog park.
