I see that Yelp is claiming this course is closed it is not. I played $45 per person to play this course on MLK day. I do not give out low ratings lightly. I have wondered if two stars is too high. The staff was extremely friendly so that is the only reason I am giving it two. The course should be shut down. I get it is January and the grass would be dormient. That does not explain the "moon scape" of the fairways. Huge potholes everywhere. The tee boxes are so hard you can't get tees in them. Then there are the tee boxes that have backhoe damage on them. Why is a backhoe on a tee box? Then the greens are a joke. The sand traps have rocks in them. If I had paid $15 maybe it would be ok. That is a huge maybe. My husband and I play golf a lot all over the world. This is the worst course conditions we have ever had. It may have been better not to play golf? We looked on line and saw they had some tee times the day of so that is why we went. The price on line was $38. We drove there and to book there on sight was $45. The day wasn't great as well as the pace of play was so so so slow. We had a four some of ladies playing best ball. Two of the four couldn't hit the ball more than four feet or swang and miss. I am all for newbies. Especially ladies. However, you got to be smart about it. It wouldn't have been difficult to let us play through either as we were usually at the tee box with them. Thankfully, they stopped at the turn and only played nine and that is when we found out it really didn't matter because they had a foursome in front of them that was drunk and as bad at golf as the ladies with mouths of sailors. We got so fed-up we drove through on hole 13. I don't know if I have seen people so drunk on a golf course in a while. I do blame the lady at the front. It was clear she knew them. We were a twosome. We knew it was going to be slow, but we could have also gone off before them. When we drove through the last foursome, we didn't have anyone in front of us the rest of the round no matter how fast we went. We play fast. Additionally, on the front nine we had the two some behind us drive into us three times. It is so unacceptable. We were stuck between a slow foursome and a fast twosome. The last time he hit into us I drove back to him and said please go in front of us and see what we are dealing with. I wish I could say it was one guy. We got hit into again on the back nine by another player. Unreal! It sort of speaks to the type of players on this course. Newbies, that drink while they play and don't get the unspoken rules of golf. Do note there is no attire restrictions on this course. Overall, a bad day on a golf course is a better than a day at work but this wasn't really golf. This was hitting a white ball in the hill country. Save your money and time and go elsewhere. We had played here before, so we know it wasn't this bad the last time we played here. Hard to say is it going down or is it on its way up. Along the river you can see they are doing some work, but we will not be back. Not for the condition of the course. read more

I walk into the shop and the lady in there is not who you want as the face of your brand. Occasionally you see someone and it doesn't go well and you think "oh it must be me", but then my buddy came in and I wanted to take our business elsewhere. The golf course....is being neglected by these new owners. And it's really sad because years ago the greens were super grainy but the course was well kept. It's awful. Like, hey, if they'd just punched the greens, okay, that happens seasonally. It sucks but it's the business. But this place is so poorly maintained I wished I'd gone in for a refund and left except I drove 31 miles to get there. The rough is just fescue & weeds and clover...good luck finding your ball. And the greens are small and grainier than before though there were a few ok. If the greens were just grainy or the fairways were a bit long or the rough unkept I get that. But when you add it all up and top it off with that canker sore working in the shop it's the worst kind of golf experience. I'm so sorry to have to be so hard on the place but if you read my other reviews I'm always looking for the best in everyone. I'd recommend something else. read more

Sad to say, but the course is in terrible shape. Many fairways have big areas with no grass, just hard ground. Greens are not much better. They're often unevenly mowed, if mowed at all in previous 24 hrs. I give 2 ** only because it's cheap. 9 holes with range balls and cart came to $38 for the two of us. The staff was friendly and helpful. It's really a shame... this used to be a well- conditioned, if slightly eccentric, track. I don't know about the financial side of this outfit, but it appears to be circling the drain. Who's going dump a bunch of money into renovating a course that gets flooded out (six or seven of the holes are immediately adjacent to the Colorado River) every 7-10 years? read more

Price is like $35 buck a weekend tee time. I think the quality of grass really depends on how much it has been raining. Two years ago, little rain- dusty fairways.....this year we have had a wet summer--- green fairways. I don't remember seeing a cart girl/woman out this year but I was pretty doped up on muscle relaxers for my back so......... I do enjoy the course set up. Staff was very friendly. Grill was not open, other than three remaining "grab and go" ham sandwiches for our party of four. The tee boxes were so hard it was extremely difficult to place a tee in the ground. (Plastic tees would bend. Wooden tees would only go in a fraction of an inch on most tee boxes.). I'm not sure why this place has such bad reviews... You have to know what you are getting with $30 for 18 holes and a cart. I had a great time here. The course is in a BEAUTIFUL area, right along the Colorado river, and there are plenty of scenic holes that are smack in the middle of very wooded areas. Although the course isn't perfectly maintained, it is still very playable, especially for the price. There are a few par 3s where the tee box is really up high, and you shoot down a major drop onto the green, which always really fun. There are a few holes where you hit across the river or creek which is also cool. There are several parts of the course that are pretty narrow, and a little unforgiving for novice golfers, but it is still fun. One weird thing was that all the golf carts were gas powered. It was weird to hear the engine fire up every time I hit the gas pedal, and it made it a little difficult to zip around without bothering the other twosome in our group. Also, several of the holes are really far apart from each other, so it definitely NOT a walking course. The breakfast tacos in the clubhouse are pretty good too. $1.50 each for something quick. read more

What an excellent little golf course far off the beaten path. How they carved a course out of the cliffs, ravines, and river bottoms adjacent the Colorado River is a mystery to me, but what a gem! Par threes with huge elevation changes, blind tee shots on several holes, and of course the "pull" of the river in the flat holes adjacent the water. Love love love the layout. Coarse maintenance is a HUGE issue. Have never seen st Augustine grass on a fairway...be it on a few areas. Not sure of the age of the greens but in late March they are 80% pop and dirt. Poa has been mowed down to nothing I'll try it later in the summer and hope it's Better taken care of read more

A group of friends and I booked a round here due to a deal posted on another website (come to find out you can get similar deals direct from the club, which helps if you need to negotiate rain checks). When the day came around, it ended up being a cold rainy day. We were greeted by a very friendly and accommodating staff. Weather conditions proceeded to deteriorate throughout the round, but I don't get a chance to get out with the guys much anymore, so we pushed through it. We ended up being the only group out on the course, but had a fabulous time. Can't wait to go back when the weather is better. Fairways are pretty tight on a lot of holes. 3-woods are probably a good idea for most. The changes in elevation create some very beautiful holes, however be very careful if the cart paths are wet...we had a couple of fishtail incidents that could have resulted in something more serious. Maybe they could put something down on the paths to improve traction on these holes? Overall, for the price charged, I highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a solid round of golf. read more

Sorry for the reviewer below, but I'm not going to make this a story of my past. Located out in Bastrop, Pine Forest is a bit of a hike, but at 25 dollars on Golf Now, it is well worth it. Clubhouse: Not much to go by here, pro shop, and small seating area for food - cash only in the food area. Practice Facilities: Not much to talk to here, small bunker and chipping area - SMALL range. So how did I give this place a 3 star?!!? Layout, variety, and decent conditions. Built along the Colorado, there is a TON of elevation change along this course. Furthermore, the holes are tricky (not particularly long) so your first time around may be rough. Some of the par threes have LONG drops to the green so good luck!! Word of advice, take it easy on the carts, you can easily fly off the path on many of these holes - so don't kill yourself. This course has a bit of everything, but my main complaint would be the shape of the greens. Most of them had a bit of thatching - and were in rough shape. If this course gets the conditions up, this will easily be a 4 star course. read more

I mainly play Plum Creek and can now say I will be making the trek to Bastrop from South Austin from now on. What an incredibly fun course. Had the opportunity to play this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed all 18 holes. This course makes you feel like you are miles away in the woods and that is exactly what this city dweller was looking for. Sure the course is not in pristine condition, but for a casual golfer this is really a great course. A group of 7 of us went to play on a Sunday and the course wasn't crazy packed, but busy which was great for us as it allowed us to take our time and still play at a quick pace. The elevation changes and the narrow fairways made this course challenging but fun. I would hate to admit how many balls I lost out here, but who cares when you are having that much fun. If you are looking to get away and enjoy the outdoors this course will be worth the drive. read more

Terrible customer service. Spoke to a guy named Sam and asked him if we could borrow clubs for my daughter just to hit some balls at their driving range, for her upcoming golf tournament. We did tell him that she had forgotten them at our home, more than an hour away. He said "No, we don't have clubs to lend. Why didn't she bring her clubs with her? I recommend you take her back home to go get them" I told him that was insolent as we are in Bastrop now and will be here for the week, but he became belligerent and said "No, I am not being rude." He is definetly not an asset to this golf club. read more

Course has a ton of potential with interesting lay put and nice vistas throughout the course. Unfortunately the tees and greens are in poor shape and the course is poorly run. 2, 3 and 4 groups were backed up on each tee box for my back nine... Despite my calls for assistance I never saw a starter, marshal, pro, cart girl or anyone offering any assistance. Though this place is convenient to my in laws house, I will drive for miles before I waste another day at this dog track. Too bad. Shows how a poorly managed course can take the fun out of golf. read more

Definitely my new favorite golf course right now. It's a 30 min. drive out of Austin but well worth it. Showed up on a Saturday morning with two other people and the course was wide open and playing great. Prior to teeing off they even gave us a tour of the facilities and let us go an hour prior to our tee time. We felt like VIP's. The course itself is scenic with some great views of the surrounding landscape and of the Colorado river. We finished our round within 3 hours and that's with hunting for our poorly hit golf balls in the bushes, a lot. Goes to say this course is tough but super fun nonetheless. For the price, course layout, scenery, and play-ability you can't do much better than Pine Forest here in Texas. read more

Played on a Sunday. Course was not mowed and hadn't been mowed for weeks. Hard to find balls in the fairways. Greens are full of poa annua. The have rules on too many golfers in a group but allow one somes to go along, play a hole then jump in front of groups to find another spot. The members are rude. My last visit. read more

A long drive for a little golf and short trek for a journey way back in time. Golf = Two Stars. I've experienced better, even at this course. Nostalgia = Four Stars. So I haven't played the course in over seven, maybe eight years. Just playing here holds a little nostalgia of it's own. Of course it was in better condition then. Numerous floods and economic deprivation from competing courses (first Colo Vista and now Wolfdancer) have really taken its toll here. But nostalgia has a funny way of building things up in your memory to a size and shape they never quite are or were in reality. So maybe my fondness makes this course stronger in memory. We played many a long summer round of 18 here, mostly early mornings but occasionally afternoons too. Always too hot but the heat takes a distant second to the humidity. Buggy as hell too. It's right on the river after all. I distinctly remember my first time playing Blind Wolf, not knowing the rules, declaring "Blind Wolf" on the tabletop par 3, 3rd Hole and subsequently stealing the game right there. The downhill/uphill 4th hole where you don't want to shank one short and right because the guy living there lets his dog out as soon as you do. Always curious to me why Golf Haters live on golf courses. I remember heavy mist in the early mornings hanging over all the trees; feeling like I needed to whisper. I remember a winter round. We were a twosome. The only other souls were eight guys there for an obligatory bachelor party outing -- a miserable forced march for all of them and not just the groom-to-be. A lightning two hour and forty minute round for the two of us. I hit a couple shots that not only stung every extremity but rung the tuning fork in my solar plexus that 31 degree day but we shot some lights out numbers on the score card. And today my buddy declares on the 4th that in his estimation this hole hearkens back to one of the most memorable single holes of golf ever; a Tin Cup, rapid firing of five balls into the tree line, shirt ripped off, one minute melt down for me that still has people rolling with laughter. Oh, the Hollywood Sweat. Thank my buddy for bringing Tecate and limes even though coolers are verboten. I was able to regain my composure and march on for the other 14 holes that day. That's as far back as my buddy's time machine would go. His six year old son putting a mile post on his own chronological chart today, perhaps only the hot dog will survive in his memory although it might survive in his colon for at least a few years. My nostalgia kept traversing back even further though. The smell of a pine forest taking me back to my Army days in the Carolinas. The smell of gasoline exhaust from golf carts and the high rev on engines with no governors taking me back to my teen years sitting in the caddy shack waiting to get out for the day. The squishy sound of saturated ground beneath my heals and the odor of mucky river detritus taking me pretty much as far back as I can remember to the cottage by the lake where the family would take fishing trips in the summer. And then there's the fact that this is so far back off the highway that you quickly forget all of the modern expansion you've just passed through in the middle of Bastrop. You pass over roads so old and sun-baked the asphalt has caramelized. All the street names are Hawaiian. Perhaps because Hawaii was very cool and trendy back in the 70's. I distinctly remember a lot of out-of-focus slide shows featuring Honolulu at my great aunt's house from that era and she was a traveling hipster back then. These woods are a shrine to A-Frame architecture. The inhabitants deserve government grants for either sweltering through the summers or paying their four figure cooling bills in the spirit of keeping these triangular monoliths in tact instead of doing the logical thing by tearing them down and replacing them with something more energy efficient. And much like the houses, all the same trees still stand but they guard the greens from so many of my approach shots and hopefully they always will. One Hundred Eleven degrees, Eleven holes and Thirty Seven Years back in time was about the limit today. On the roller-coaster ride back out to the highway there was some vintage Pretenders and Eagles playing as if the FM radio had traveled through time with me. I got a thorough fix -- not of golf but of nostalgia. For golf I will play a better course much closer to home. For nostalgia, well, I probably won't need to go back for another four or five years now. read more

I love this course! My all time favorite!!! Fun fun fun!! It is heavenly to be on it! Beautiful views, very challenging holes & cart paths! The employees are super nice & helpful! Wildlife is abundant: deer, roadrunners, ducks & all sorts of big & small birds plus various little animals along the paths. I take 969 from Austin & its a very scenic relaxing & pleasant drive. Bastrop has food shopping, coffee shop & library. It also has a historic downtown so take extra time & explore! To get to the course easily from 71 take a right on Tahitian Dr by Walgreens. At end of road take a right on Riverside Dr and you are there. GPS inaccurate & will get you lost. They said they are trying to move the Google pin which will then give you the directions i wrote above. Go play Pine Forrest & have fun! Its terrific!! read more

Bad experience here; be ready to have a 5 to 6 hour round. They have multiple groups of 5 that supposedly are pros and play fast. I was behind back to back groups of 5 and they did not play as pros. Was told they usually have groups of 5 throughout the day. Spent most of my time waiting. Course maintenance is what you would expect out of what you are paying for this course. The only good thing is the fact that it's in the hill country which gives the course a nice lay out. Fairways are poorly maintained and greens are slow as if putting on carpet. Also gas powered carts which makes for a noisy round of golf. Club house has an old dark atmosphere. Spend the extra buck and play somewhere else read more

I went to Austin for a guys' weekend a couple weeks ago and I booked a round at Pine Forest not knowing how far it was from where we were staying. I used golfnow.com and filtered by price and rating. Boy, am I glad that we booked one of our rounds here because the experience was a definite highlight of the weekend. When it comes to golf courses, I don't think it's fair to rate them negatively because of their clientele. I saw some reviews mentioning slow play of other golfers. Sure a marshall can drive around asking people to pick up the pace, but I don't allow a slow group of hackers to affect my opinions about a course. That being said, Pine Forest was a treat. It's a short course, and set up very nicely. Each hole stands alone and is surrounded by trees. It's been a couple weeks but I don't think there are any holes where you can see neighboring fairways. The bunkers are there, but aren't unfair. And the layout offers tricky lies in areas you end up in with a bad shot (so pretty much where I played from the entire day). There were a few holes that were adjacent to a road, so definitely wait until there aren't any cars before hitting your tee shot. The landscaping is nice. It has a definite thick forest feel to it with old trees surrounding each hole. I thought the fairways were surprisingly well maintained for a course weaving through a community. This might be a negative for some golfers whose balls are cursed to find houses and lakes. Some fairways are very tight and for safety's sake I played shorter irons off of multiple tee boxes on par 4s and 5s. The greens were nice looking, but were incredibly slow. Which for some players who struggle with their putting can be a really good thing. I had a downhill putt on a par 3 and the ball stopped on a steep downslope about half way to the hole. I didn't mind anything about the fairway and greens at Pine Forest. So far with what I've said I'd say Pine Forest would get a 4 star rating. Nice setup, nice landscaping. What really sets them apart for me was how we were treated in the pro-shop. I'm not sure who the gentleman was that took care of us. Whoever the guy was that was manning the cash register around midday on October 15th, he needs to get an award as the friendliest golf course employee of all time. Usually at a pro shop you pay then you tee off. Maybe talk about the weather some. We were pleasantly surprised by how polite and helpful this guy was. He explained the layout, what to watch for on the greens (they all slope towards the river), talked to us briefly about the community, gave us a better way to the highway because he heard that on our way there we had to weave through the community, and was just an overall super nice guy. It really does a lot for me when my round starts off on the right foot like that. It doesn't affect my swing in a positive or negative way, but I can handle my bad shots with less sadness when the day starts off well.
