They certainly aren't used to drop ins at the 5:30am class so I felt like I surprised her a little when I showed up. There isn't a lot of info on their website about drop ins, so I just reached out via email ahead of time to let them know I was coming. They have the coolest t-shirts from american apparel too! I feel like I would drop in again just to get another shirt! The programming was awesome and I got a great workout in! They have fantastic equipment and it's all in wonderful condition. You can tell they take pride in their gym. There is plenty of parking in their lot too, which is always a concern in the urban areas. If you're in the Tacoma area I definitely suggest dropping in at Tacoma Strength!

Just in the midst, I have been debating over where to re-join at a gym to start working out [hopefully commit....] it was only a $5 fee for UWT students to attend an orientation and to go in twice a week for I think it was a month or so. I went to the orientation, no one but myself showed up.. kind of embarrassing. When I first stepped in, I felt like Plankton from Spongebob... I was scrawny compared to these extreme work-out people... even the ladies were muscled-up. Since I was by myself, it was more one on one orientation which gave me more space to ask questions and such. I think the person's name was Morgan? Maybe.. I don't remember~ he took me around and showed me the different exercises Crossfit involves. I was really excited to try this out. After the orientation it was a couple weeks after that I attended my first actual session. WOW... I am exercise-impaired, literally... I cannot properly work out for some odd reason despite being "out of shape". It was super embarrassing that I was so slow and had to use a pipe compared to others who had pretty heavy weights attached to their bars. I don't know if Crossfit is exactly what I am looking for when it comes to working-out but definitely I am proud of myself for giving it a go. But just a bit too intense for my level. The trainers and people at the session were super friendly and understanding about my lack of skills and was patient with me as I struggled embarrassingly... back and forth across the gym... with the weight sled thing dragging behind me (:

I got a mile readout at 4:57, technically 5:00 if splitting hairs. The treads only go up to 12 mph, so I'd maxed out and then added 1.5-2% incline on top. Anyway, 'nuff said. After this gym class, I jogged a 5K roughly back to my AirBnB. But that's a story for another day. I've been going to OrangeTheory (OT) for about a year now, so I know what I'm doing. Which indirectly means that I know what I'm doing in this review of an OT studio. I guess the real question is, do I really know how to end this review. The answer is, no. I went to OT Tacoma one day while on vacation, and I got a pretty respectable mile time. Then I jogged a not altogether easy 5K back afterwards. I'm visiting from the Northern Virginia area. So, yeah. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I have little to no idea what I'm rambling on about. But anyway, this studio was pretty dope.

I recently decide to start going back to the gym because the classes offered help me deal with stress. I called Wednesday the La fitness in tukwila to see what I needed to do before I go to the gym so I can get back on track. I was informed that I simply needed to pay $77 to catch up on my bill. I asked if I could go to any LA fitness because I moved to Tacoma. I was told yes. Monday morning I wake up happy excited and nervous to go to the body works plus abs class followed by Zumba. I arrive and was told that my account is closed. I explained I just called Wednesday and was told that I could pay so that I could use the gym membership. She said that the account was closed and that a sales representative could help me at 9:15. So I miss class one and wait for the rep hoping to catch my Zumba class which I really love. 9:15 comes and the manager explains that my account is closed and it's not able to be reopen and that I need to start a new account. He passes me on to another guy who was there at 845ish and he explains that the new membership is $60 a month. So I would have to pay 1st and last month and an initiation fee. I said the lady up front told me you had a $25 plan he stated that she is not a sales representative at that sale was over the weekend. So I decided to take my cash and go to dollar tree to get a prepaid Visa card so that I could get a membership through active fit for $28 a month. I just pay $62 first and last. So I go back to LA Fitness and wait about 20 mins to see the same gentlemen to active my account. It took two minutes. I asked him a simple question if this membership was for all the LA fitness or just this one. His response was I don't know you need to call active fit because they're the ones who made the account for you as he shrugs his shoulders. I asked in a calm low voice because I am so irritated by the horrible service that I ask your looking at the account it doesn't explain any information regarding the membership because they told me to ask you. He states that it says active in Washington state whatever that means. Ok so I am really big on customer service. One because I give customer service in all my jobs that I have had in my life and I am big on treating others as you want to be treated but if someone as you a question please don't shrug your shoulders and say call someone else. First see if someone else at your facility can help the person if you don't know what you're doing. Second of all get yourself up a come to the client and escort them to their seat. There have been plenty of months of plenty of years that LAF has received my money and I never visited. The more polite thing would have Been to ask after your classes will you have time to take care of this matter. Let me enjoy my classes and start my day off on a better note. But what is done is done. Please do better in giving great service. Help people heal through their trauma by working out. Not causing more friction in their already stressful life.

I've been with I love kickboxing for about 6 months before starting the #6WeekChallange. I…read moreoriginally joined the club to get ready for my military PT test. I hate running, so I had to get my cardio up. (I ended up doing really well, btw.) I'm pretty active (besides running, lol), I have been doing a lot of strength/weight training and I eat fairly healthy. I've was gaining weight (muscle mass) but not losing any body fat. So I decided to start the #6WeekChallenge to kick my butt in gear. It was definitely a challenge. Adjusting to the meal plan the first week was difficult; I was hungry about 99% of the week, but I lost 3lbs and 2% BF that week. The second week, I had no changes in my results, and I was extremely frustrated. (There were a few weeks where I didn't have any changes. ) After talking with the instructors, I adjusted my meal plan a bit to help out. By the 3rd-4th week, I still wasn't seeing the results I wanted, so I talked to some of my fitness friends for additional tips and I had to adjust my meals again. And because I wasn't eating very few carbs, I was unable to sustain my strength workout with weights, I just ended up doing a lot of body weight workouts and adding in more cardio (besides the 3-4 kickboxing classes per week). But I ended up losing 14 lbs and almost 8% body fat!! I was weak, tired, and hungry most of the 6 weeks and there were many moments I wanted to quit and just go eat a Cinnabon, but I'm glad I kept to it and am extremely proud of my results. Although, I know some of the weight I lost was muscle mass. Rather than recommending whether or not to join the club or the 6 week challenge, I'll state my pros and cons. Pros: 1. The instructors are AMAZING. They are very helpful and patient. And the push you when you THINK you can't or just don't want to do the work. 2. The other members/challengers are awesome. They are very encouraging, share tips, and are willing to be an accountability partner whenever asked. 3. Class times are accommodating, for the most part. There are classes later in the evening on most days, for those of us who work during the day. Cons: 1. The club and the challenge are really expansive, even with a military and member discount. 2. The club itself (Tacoma anyways) smells like stinky feet. (Until you get used to it.) 3. The punching bags are well used, it would be nice if they were updated. 4. Challenge specific; if you are fairly fit and don't really have the weight/body fat to lose, it's really difficult to be successful without doing additional things aside of the challenge itself.

Pros: friendly snd encouraging staff, modify things for new people, excellent full body work out Cons: high pressure sales pitch, and it's too expensive and not a flexible membership. $125/month and sign up for a year. If they had a punch card or a month to month - it would be much more doable. But if you aren't working out 3x a week every month. It's just too expensive for what you're getting. If you weren't committing to a year up front - it would be better. If they had a 10 punch card option- that would be helpful- but I also don't want to pay for 100 punches at once. They need more flexible membership types.

Evan and the assistant instructors are very good about giving constructive, targeted feedback. I feel that I have learned a lot of new things and had plenty of opportunity to fine-tune the basics, which has helped me build up my strength. In class, we learn to protect ourselves and fight back. When we learn new techniques, Evan breaks down the psychological aspects before moving into the how-to, enabling a full understanding of the why you are learning this. The real-life scenarios continue to be a helpful, and above all, safe way for me to try out what I've learned. Some of the other reviews have mentioned the work out at the end of class. This is no joke. The workout is the best! We do circuit training with some combative stuff thrown in, like palm strikes, elbows, and knife-dodging. Evan encourages you and will even work out with you. I'm not even a fitness freak (ugghhh I hate the gym), but this workout rocks. For those who are feeling iffy about the class and the amount of combat that takes place, please be assured that Evan always encourages you to find a way out of a physical altercation. This is an attitude that I have always appreciated because at the end of the day, I'm a lover, not a fighter. This class is just teaching you what you can do if you are left with no choice or caught off guard.
