Ask the Community - Tacoma Center YMCA

What is the parking situation here and is it safe?

I haven't had any issues. I haven't noticed broken-car-glass on the ground like other places in town. It's the city and I do lock things, pay attention, and don't leave attractive things visible in your car.…

Is there a Hot Tub and Sauna?

There is a Hot Tub, no sauna. There is a steam room!

They certainly aren't used to drop ins at the 5:30am class so I felt like I surprised her a little when I showed up. There isn't a lot of info on their website about drop ins, so I just reached out via email ahead of time to let them know I was coming. They have the coolest t-shirts from american apparel too! I feel like I would drop in again just to get another shirt! The programming was awesome and I got a great workout in! They have fantastic equipment and it's all in wonderful condition. You can tell they take pride in their gym. There is plenty of parking in their lot too, which is always a concern in the urban areas. If you're in the Tacoma area I definitely suggest dropping in at Tacoma Strength!

I definitely didn't know what I was signing up for when my school [University of…read moreWashington Tacoma] was having a sign-up for something called Cross Fit on their Facebook page. Just in the midst, I have been debating over where to re-join at a gym to start working out [hopefully commit....] it was only a $5 fee for UWT students to attend an orientation and to go in twice a week for I think it was a month or so. I went to the orientation, no one but myself showed up.. kind of embarrassing. When I first stepped in, I felt like Plankton from Spongebob... I was scrawny compared to these extreme work-out people... even the ladies were muscled-up. Since I was by myself, it was more one on one orientation which gave me more space to ask questions and such. I think the person's name was Morgan? Maybe.. I don't remember~ he took me around and showed me the different exercises Crossfit involves. I was really excited to try this out. After the orientation it was a couple weeks after that I attended my first actual session. WOW... I am exercise-impaired, literally... I cannot properly work out for some odd reason despite being "out of shape". It was super embarrassing that I was so slow and had to use a pipe compared to others who had pretty heavy weights attached to their bars. I don't know if Crossfit is exactly what I am looking for when it comes to working-out but definitely I am proud of myself for giving it a go. But just a bit too intense for my level. The trainers and people at the session were super friendly and understanding about my lack of skills and was patient with me as I struggled embarrassingly... back and forth across the gym... with the weight sled thing dragging behind me (:

Very disappointing experience, especially as a potential new member…read more My best friend and I arrived around 9:00 PM with guest passes, simply hoping to get a workout in. We specifically chose this gym because it was the only 24-hour facility available to us at that time. Upon arriving, we were informed that guest passes were no longer accepted after 5:00 PM and that we would have to purchase day passes instead. A 5:00 PM cutoff is extremely impractical, especially for a gym that promotes itself as being open 24 hours. Most working professionals don't even get off work until 5:00 or 6:00 PM, let alone have time to get home, change, and make it to the gym before then. It makes me question who these guest passes are actually intended to accommodate. The entire purpose of a 24-hour gym is flexibility. Having such restrictive guest policies completely contradicts that convenience, particularly for prospective members who are simply trying to experience the facility before committing to a membership. I ended up paying for the day passes anyway because we had already made the trip and genuinely wanted to work out. However, my willingness to pay should not be mistaken for satisfaction with the policy or the experience. We weren't asking for special treatment. We arrived with guest passes, ready to work out, and were instead met with an unexpected expense. As prospective members, this should have been an opportunity for the gym to make a positive first impression. What I find particularly disappointing is that a business would rather enforce such an inconvenient restriction than recognize an opportunity to welcome potential long-term members. Ultimately, we came because of the advertised 24-hour convenience, paid because we genuinely wanted to work out, and left with absolutely no interest in becoming members. Even though the gym was clean and nice i definitely would've became a member if it wasn't for that first interaction of feeling judged to where we had to pay. First impressions matter, and this experience completely turned me off from the facility. I strongly encourage management to reconsider this policy, especially if attracting new members is a priority. Turning away potential customers over an arbitrary 5:00 PM guest-pass restriction seems incredibly counterproductive for a business built around convenience and accessibility.

I have never felt like my effort was meet with results before coming here. I am 37 years old, and this year is the first time I've understood my body's needs and how to give it the best possible circumstances for health and wellness. I use Jeff's virtual Team Training, Serena's Superhero You and nutritional coaching. I'm forty weeks in to recording of nutrition and I don't ever want to stop habits, nor my relationship with Grit. The virtual training is more than just watching a workout. You can workout live with the coaches... and Jeff is ridiculously good and concise with remembering/recommending substitute movements for your limitations or injuries, and very resourceful with helping you utilize the objects you already have in your home. I have many many many public Facebook posts about this place if you're still on the fence about investing in yourself. Oh - and the generous outpouring of support and communication through several channels (fb,insta, email etc) is 24/7. They have really really found a way to personalize your health, while still keeping you part of the group.

The entire team here is incredible and the members are awesome as well. We have both done personal training (my trainer was Kam) here and learned a lot and we go to the Sunday class most often . Ascent is both welcoming and accommodating to folks of all identities and abilities and of all sizes. As someone with concerns about environments that can foster an environment where counting calories and weighing in are encouraged or emphasize is put on size, Ascent is the exact opposite. Ascent is a wonderful unicorn place where people can go just to learn how to better move their bodies and grow stronger and find victories that have nothing to do with size- like hiking longer distances, or having less back pain, or being able to lift more. They always offer alternative exercises to meet people where they're at which is super refreshing. They also host so many great events and series classes like queer inclusive self defense. We drive from a fair distance away because the community here is so much better and they have a mission you can't help but support. By far the best collective group of humans I've met since moving to Washington and that is such a testament to the owners Luca and Katie!

The focus at this gym is functional fitness, so you do a variety of exercises each time you go--including crawling, get-ups, weights (and body weight exercises), lunges, etc. I also love that the trainers will give plenty of modifications as needed, as I'm limited in shoulder mobility due to an injury. Their main format is small group classes, but personal training and open gym hours are also available. Which works for me, became I'm way more accountable when I'm in a class anyway! I've gotten noticeably stronger since I first started, which has helped me not only in my work and at home, but with my self-confidence overall. Exercise really is the best self care. Thank you, Ascent Fitness!

I danced for 15 years and so I knew that Barre stood for a ballet barre, so I assumed it had to be some type of exercise studio. All of the ladies that work here are super friendly. They have a lot of really great packages and programs. Student discounts, Corporate discounts (if you can get five people to sign up), and New Client Memberships. I decided to try it out and purchased a drop in class which was $18.00. Man! This is not for the faint of heart. I had to modify most of the exercises, and had to take multiple breaks the first couple of weeks. I have always been a pretty active person. I played basketball in college (DII NCAA), and danced. I had been doing CrossFit for 10 months, but had taken a break from it due to multiple surgeries. I also didn't like how bulky I got doing CrossFit or that my WOD only took 20 minutes, and I felt like I hadn't worked out long enough. Barre is completely different. It is very challenging! This is not some Zumba class at your local Y. It is a full hour of circuit style barre/yoga/pilates style exercises. You will get your cardio! Don't worry! You will not stop moving for an entire hour. I love that I get a full body workout and my cardio in an hour. The same workout would take 2 hours of weights and then a two mile run just to get the same feeling. As a mother, I don't have three hours a day to spend at the gym. Barre provides variety to avoid muscle memory, and every class is different. I have been taking all of the 12 o'clock classes during my lunch hour (with the exception of Tuesdays). There are different instructors on different days, but even if you get the same person leading the class the workout is ALWAYS different. I usually have class with Trish or Elizabeth's, and I have done one 4:30 class with Dena. Love all of their styles. They are great. Elizabeth and Trish give modifications and really guide you to challenge yourself, and not give up. I literally feel addicted. I am coming 5 times a week, and I can tell on the days when I don't go that I missed a workout. This isn't a fad workout program, and there are a bunch out there. It is hard work, but if you do it, you wil get the results you want and better! I knew the first time I walked into class and saw a small group of women that looked like dancers that I was in the right place. Not because I look like a dancer, but because I want to look like one! lol I already feel leaner and more flexible. Just try a drop in class, you will be hoooked! It is great, tons of fun, and you will be back.
