There aren't many places around Boston where you can get yaroa, so when I found it on their menu, I had to give it a try. Yaroa is like Dominican Poutine, but instead of gravy it's covered in ketchup and mayo. Different places do different versions of yaroa, I'm partial to the mashed maduros/sweet plantains and fries combo, but this place does fries and large strips of maduros. The fries were not good and combined with the strips of maduro, they made the yaroa dry. It wasn't for me, but the portion was huge with generous amounts of pork. We also ordered the pork chimi which was really nice. And for the price, I was surprised the sandwich came with fries, it's a good deal despite the fries not being even mid fries. The quipes were kind of spicy, which I'm not used to but had a good amount of ground beef filling and were otherwise tasty. The food was fresh and really generous portions. They packed the food well and presentation was nice. They also included tons of mayo ketchup. I'm going to be generous with my review and round the 3.5 up to a 4. Better fries and a few tweaks would make this place incredible. read more

PikaloX never disappoints! They have two new items on the menu that I had to try... a hotdog & a yaroa. It is not just a regular hotdog, the thing is amazing with all of its toppings. Definitely recommend it. The yaroa has bacon!! Yes it sounds a bit "weird" lol but hey bacon makes everything better, It did not disappoint. Another topping on the yaroa, corn!Again sounds crazy but all the flavors together just amazing is all I can say. Finished the meal off with a delicious guava & cheese empanada. The roasted pork is a must try if you live in Boston or the area or visiting. The flavors are amazing and fresh to order. So be patient. The empanadas are okay, they are the flakey fried style. They have a lot of flavors. But the sandwiches and the fresh juice deserves more love and recognition. I think the sandwiches are better than the empanadas. read more

Empanadas! And you can get them delivered all the way to your home. They arrived piping hot and were packed well in paper bags (yay, no plastic!). Portion-wise they're quite large (but each one is priced around 3.50-4.50, so it's a good cost to size ratio). The outside of the empanadas were crispy and well cooked. We ordered a bunch of different flavors: chicken, with cheese, spinach, guava and cheese. The chicken empanada was the tastiest - it was marinated well and flavorful. They also sent a small dipping sauce container. The combination is excellent! The spinach was a little bland to be honest. I often wonder why enough seasonings/ spices are not added to vegetarian dishes! I believe if they tweak this a little bit, it'll be great too. There's a lot of hype around this place but everything is...lacking and salty. I keep trying new items because I live near by but alas. Ive had different empanadas from them from meat filled to simple cheese. The dough is overwhelming and the meat has no spice it's just salty. When I think of an empanada I think of beautiful simmered spice flavors that add a little kick--theres 0 kick here it's just plain (could work in some people's favor). I have tried the burger which was dry and tasteless. I also tried a chicken croquette which was the same--overly salty without taste. read more

The food I've had: shrimp empanadas, chicken and cheese, bollito, tres leches cake and guava cookies are absolutely delicious but everything else about this place sucks. No ambiance. It's a take out place. That's fine. The service though, is what make this place horrendous. The staff is rude, uncommunicative and unprofessional. I dread going in there because of it. They prep condiments while a long line forms and approach the counter without any sense of purpose or urgency. They take orders seemingly out of sequence, greeting customers they know warmly and all but rolling their eyes at those they do not know. Every time I go the person working the counter takes their time before getting off their phone. They have conversations amongst themselves and don't acknowledge me for a few beats. Come here prepared to wait the entire day. Service is about as slow as your grandma trying to get downstairs with her walker. Completely ridiculous to wait over 45 min for food that's edible at best. The staff looks about as competent as the cast of the squid games in Compton. My recommendation is save yourself time and money and go literally anywhere else. If you're looking for quick empanadas and smoothies, Pikalox will hit the spot. Had a chicken and cheese empanada from the case (which had about ~8 flavors ready to go), and it was flavorful and very large (and a good deal for $3.50). My small papaya smoothie was refreshing and tasty, a bit more on the creamy side than others I've had (not in a bad way- I'm guessing it's made with juice instead of fruit pieces). They also have sandwiches and a bunch of other flavors of empanadas and croquettes too, although I'm guessing those could take a few minutes to prepare if they're not sitting in the case already. I've only ever ordered empanadas from this place. They've always been great, and they give you mayoketchup too. They have jugo de parcha which is one of my special treats I allow myself here and there. The food is good and the empanadas are good. The reason I am giving 3 stars is because there have been several times I have placed an order ahead of time, like 30 minutes before for a chicken or beef empanada and when I arrive it's not ready. That would not be a problem if I wasn't told by the employee that it would be ready in "15 minutes" Also some of the employees refuse to speak Spanish to people who don't look like your "typical Hispano" My sister and I have both gone in on separate occasions and ordered in Spanish but were only spoken to in English. We are Puerto Rican and speak Spanish fluently but for some reason, a few of the employees decided we didn't fit the stereotypical mold or something......no se.
