The Margherita pizza the first night was great. Generous toppings, slices were cut well, and the crust was thin but not over cooked. We decided to try them again when we were in a time crunch and needed a quick meal. The second time, we tried the ensalada pizza. The person preparing our order burnt the crust and put inappropriate toppings on the pizza. Instead of the toppings outlined on the pizza like arugula, she put salad mixed greens which burned and became extremely bitter. Crust was dry and burnt. She did not add the balsamic glaze either. The tomato sauce was extremely tart but last time was much more balanced. If they were out of ingredients, I don't understand why they wouldn't tell us and would instead scam us by giving us a bastardized version of the pizza. Incredibly unprofessional and I will not come back here.

Overall I would say this is a fantastic third rate grocery shopping experience while in OBX. Third rate because on my subjective and highly informal pecking order, I would put Food Lion behind places like Harris Teeter and certainly Publix in everyway that matters to me - selection & price. Selection I somewhat get since it was the offseason and clearly they're only getting new deliveries here every few days at best. I.E. as soon as you enter the store and turn hard right towards the deli they have a fridge case with store brand large pizzas at a decent price. They had a few of them available on Monday the first time came here during our week but that section remained empty until Saturday and I came to this store four times during the week. It wasn't just the pizza but also several other things that when they were out, they were out for days. I'm somewhat accustomed to that as in prior offseason visits I had been to the store up in Corolla and in the offseason they would close at 8pm or 7pm and have basically the entire left side of the store tarped off closed until ??, I guess Spring. Also, at home for me the Giant grocery store chain is the prominent player and Ahold is the corporate parent of both Giant and Food Lion so it was no surprise to me on the irregularity of certain items availability as the three Giant stores closest to me at home have been having those issues for years whereas local Wegmans are always more expensive, yet more fully stocked. The prices are what they are, the selection is fine as long as you're not looking anything too specialized or unique but I will say that the employees we encountered here were all very, very nice and that made the shopping trips a little bit nicer. Could it be better? No doubt but if I wanted that I would have gone to Publix and paid more but to me this is a-ok, good enough.

In addition to having grocery staples they have an impressive collection of condiments for seafood as well as common ingredients for preparing seafood. I was most impressed by the stacks of hush puppy mix from various brands. It was a fabulous sight. We get steamed crabs from Billy's annually. As a Maryland commercial crabber my father is quite picky (no pun intended) about his crabs and he trusts Billy's Seafood. On my recent visit to the store another customer was picking up steamed shrimp which smelled so good. This market is charming and the employees are delightful.

We stopped in on our way to meet my mom and her friends who are renting one of the cottages just behind the store. We easily found parking and found the various little items my mom needed for the picnic/bbq inside. I grabbed a fresh spinach salad from the back area for $6.99 and it was delicious! So glad I did... tons of spinach, fresh fruits, cheese, sesame seeds and some really good ranch dressing. It was a huge portion for only $6.99 and if I had to come back, I'd grab the chicken Cobb salad for $8.99 without even hesitating. They have some snacks, drinks, ice cream and everything else up front as well as a small coffee bar. Friendly gals working inside made the whole experience very pleasant. Note - no public restrooms!

Typically I like to go to Cahoon's to buy stamps, mail postcards and get Nags Head gear. I feel like Cahoons is the only place in the Outer Banks where I can actually get a tshirt and other apparel that says Nags Head versus OBX, which I fully appreciate. I think most people probably visit Cahoon's to do a little grocery shopping or pick up a deli meal at the counter. For me, I mostly like to look at the stuff like games, sunscreen, and souvenirs. But I do tend to eye up ice cream and beer here too! Until recently I didn't realize that the deli actually has quality Boar's Head meats. I visited Cahoon's most recently during COVID and I appreciate that they are taking the pandemic seriously. When I visited they were providing hand sanitizer upon entry an requiring masks. Service was friendly .
