One of my favorite places to hike! I love it here. So many different trails with varying difficulty and length. Parking is not too much of a hassle either since there are multiple parking lots available. The summit trail gets busy (sometimes even at night) but it's not too bad. Not a lot of people on the longer trails so if you want to just take in the nature and the view this is your best bet. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes- hiking shoes would be best because the trails are not paved, so it can get pretty rocky and tough. Bring plenty of water plus a flashlight for night hikes. It's very convenient for someone who works till 5pm because the park gates are open till 7pm but the park is actually open till 11pm. Good hiking spot for beginers as well as pros! This hike is fun but much more tough than I was expecting it to be! It has a lot of false peaks which is very deceptive to a first timer like myself. There were multiple times where I thought we reached the top only to find out we weren't even close. Though this hike is super short (approx 1.3 miles each way) it's definitely difficult. Steep all the way up and I rolled my ankle near the bottom on the way down because the ground is so rocky and uneven. However, it's still definitely worth the hike for the views at the top. The panorama of the entire city of Phoenix is just beautiful! read more

I still sometimes find myself calling it "Squaw Peak" like many of my native Arizonan friends - those born here and raised - and though I can't claim that status....I have been in-out-around these parts for awhile now and things have changed...like the name of this mountain. The last time I hiked Squaw Peak, I was intrigued to discover many different men's colognes while passing the fittest and fastest of all ages of male hiker. Odd memory, I know! But overall, I just feel like this little peak is more "citified" while Camelback still feels a bit more rugged. (All I can tell you is that I have no mens' fragrance memories from Camelback - none that you can buy at a fine retailer, anyway! Ha) For me, this summit trail feels "easier" than Camelback (both on ascent and descent). The scenery is lovely and there is some wildlife here and there. (Still never seen a snake of any variety - knock on petrified wood - don't care to.) Parking was a drag twenty years ago (especially during after-work, weekend mornings) but I now have a friend who resides nearby so I haven't dealt with any parking in awhile. Best advice is always to come at off-times: midday, weekday etc. (It gets hot fast of course, so bring adequate hydration, nutrition etc.) There are restrooms at the parking location along Squaw Peak Drive. I came here on a Sunday on February 10, 2019. I was told that it wasn't an easy hike but it definitely wasn't too hard of a trail. It's one of the second highest mountain in the Phoenix area after Camelback mountain. The common name for this place is also known as Squaw Peak. I would recommend coming to hike during this time because it wasn't too cold yet still had sun up. The trail goes uphill for about 2,610 feet. The trail markings is clearly marked so you won't get lost. I'm a bit out of shape so I had trouble going up the mountain a few times. Took maybe 3 or 4 breaks half way up. 2/3 of the mountain gets harder as it inclined up to the peak. But once you get to the top it's really beautiful. Probably out of a difficulty scale from 1-10. 10 be the hardest. I say I give it a 7 or 8. So definitely bring lots of water. Bathrooms are at the bottom of the mountain and there's none after that. The only down side is that parking is very limited. It was a challenge for me but I honestly enjoyed it. I would recommend this place to others who are interested in an intermediate hike. read more

My oh my, what an amazing, exhilarating hike! It was in the high 50s-low 60s when we did this hike on a Saturday afternoon. We had hoped to go to Sedona red rock country, but with rain there and potentially snow, we ended up staying in Phoenix. We were not disappointed! This is about a 1 mile each way hike. It takes probably an hour up, and maybe 40 or so minutes coming back down. Some people describe it as "beginner".... It probably shouldn't be your first hike, and I would truly classify it as "intermediate". There are no real obstacles or true climbing you have to do, but there are areas that are very steep. Also, I'm very short so some of the steps up were bigger side for me and required a little bit of mental-spatial calculation. That's not to say you cant do it if you're short - there were kids there rocking this hike! I had an awesome time, and would definitely do it again! The view from the peak shows you the layout of Phoenix on one side, and more mountainous terrain/desert on the other side. That said, the best photo opp is not from the top - I'd say it is 3 /4 the way up where there is a jutting out rock formation. See photo. If you're not from AZ and like seeing cacti, there were plenty of those spread out throughout the hike! read more

One of the most outstanding short distance hikes readily accessible in the Greater Phoenix Area. Piestewa Peak is part of the phoenix preserve area adjacent to Paradise Valley. Camelback Mountain is clearly visible from the peak as is the downtown skyline and the Valley in general. It's less than 1.5 miles with a rapid incline to 1200 ft, might want to bring a bit of water, especially during the summer months. There's a good amount of foot traffic, so be prepared to share the trail. The outstanding views really make this summit peak trail worth checking out! read more

However, getting to it from the opposite side is a bit challenging. I originally wanted to do the Circumference Trail, but my google maps took me to the wrong place. I wound up going to the park proper and parking on the far end past the monuments. It was definitely a lot less crowded there. However, there is a sign for the Circumference Trail that is never followed up by any other signs. Eventually, I ended up going up the 301 trail, which was fine. The trail is super steep and rocky from the outset. Once you get to the top ridgeline, it appears to be a trail to the back side of the summit--however, this trail is closed and I wouldn't recommend it either way because it is very narrow and the footing is precarious. Do not attempt with a heavy pack (I started to go that way, but turned around). Once you get over the ridge, the trail continues down the other side and you have to give away your elevation significantly to get to the summit trail. After a certain point, there are no longer any dogs allowed, and for good reason. The summit trail is absolutely insane! It is one level after another of near vertical, rocky, and sometimes natural staircases. There is even a large crack the you have to negotiate to get to the final summit. But once you get there, the view is well worth it. Arguably, one of the best views in central AZ! Positives include great view, no bikes, and an awesome workout. Also, the history behind the name of the trail is amazing! Negatives include poor trail markings, difficulty finding the location, and excessive crowds. Tips: get there super early; even before sunup. I got there at 430 am and there were already people on the trail! Bring plenty of water. Use poles if you have them. Know your capabilities and limitations. I did it with about a 70 lb pack, but there were times when I wasn't sure if I could make it. Amazing amazing amazing!! So this is my second time going hiking in life (my first time was on thunderbird mountain) and this was so challenging. I mean the elevation is what really killed me. If you think the stair climber is hard on its max level - well multiply that x20! But non the less, this is an amazing workout. My suggestions are, drink plenty of water, about a gallon, the day before (maybe throw in some coconut water), and then drink half a gallon the day of, take the other half with you on the hike. My biggest mistake was my water wasn't cold enough so it got hot and I didn't really want to drink hot water in 103 degree weather. I used it to keep my mouth wet by swishing with the water and spitting it out. I love the positivity of the other people on the hike as well. I'm not from here but people said hello and encouraged one another to make it to the top, it was really inspirational!! and I love how there were all types of people hiking the trail. Different ethnicities, sizes, shapes, ages - there were even families with little children hiking; its great!! But I did make it to the top and it was so rewarding. I honestly wanted to lay out and go to sleep but there wasn't a smooth surface Coming down was really hard for me because I didn't have on hiking shoes, but I will next time! It took me 1.5 hour to and from. I honestly can't wait to return back!!! read more

Piestewa Peak - Scenery view -- half way up to the peak. - Parks Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

I am not much of a hiker, but a friend of mine is and lives (somewhat) close to Piestewa Peak so I've done it couple times in the past month and could definitely see it becoming a regular thing (weather permitting). The trailhead is pretty conveniently located. There's a small lot right near the start and a couple larger ones not that much further up the road. They are currently building another large lot as well. There's also plenty of parking along the road. This seems like a pretty safe area and the couple times I've been there's been multiple park rangers patrolling the area. The trail itself is challenging, yet manageable. Even if your someone in good shape you'll feel like your getting a workout. There's some steep areas so make sure to have shoes with good support. Water is a must and snacks are good as well. The top provides a gorgeous view of the valley. If you plan on hiking to the top give yourself some time. The entire hike from bottom to top and back down could take 2-3 hrs depending on your pace. You can't have dogs on the trail and I personally don't think it's a great hike for small children (but I don't have kids so what do I know). It's best to go in the morning and good for people watching. read more

This is a fantastic mountain hike to undertake in the heart of metro Phoenix. I would rate it moderate to difficult, but seasoned hikers should have no issues reaching the summit. For 90% of the trail it is stepped, but for a few short sections they provide metal bars to help when the footing is not as solid. Views at the top are amazing. Second only to Camelback Mountain to the south in height, it provides 360 degree views of the metro area, and unless you're hailing from east valley you'll probably be able to see your house from there! The only complaint that can be made concerns parking. This trail is extremely popular and and as a result, parking close to the trail head is at a premium. Unless you get lucky, I recommend parking in the subdivision leading up to the park and walking the quarter mile to the trail head from there. In the end you'll probably save time instead of trying to find a spot in the park itself. read more

Quite a bit easier than Camelback, I came here on a Thursday morning around 8am and there were a lot of people in the lot already. I think I took one of the last spots. The trail is partially paved at the bottom, but no restroom. I noticed this because I had a ton of coffee prior. No worries though, you'll lose the sensation of having to pee soon enough. The hike goes up 1300 feet and my nose was running. The rocks are small, with lots of flat, rocky areas. You get a great view of the city, but there are lots of people who leave their fruit peels and nut shells up here. I prefer more nature so this isn't my favorite, but it's close and short. read more

Love hiking this mountain. I don't have to drive to the place. All I have to do is walk a bit, and there I am, on either trail 1A or 100. It's peaceful. I take the dog and we hit the road. There's more interesting things to see if one goes off trail, but who does that?? Hmmmm. ... The sunrises and sunsets are just spectacular. The quietness gives one the opportunity to ponder life and all it has to offer. I mean really. "I can see Russia from my house." Okay. Sorry. I couldn't resist. People are always telling me to watch out for rattlesnakes and coyotes. I must admit, knock on wood, I haven't seen either yet on the trail. Around my house, yes. On the trail, no. I don't follow either trail from its beginning nor end. I just walk where I want for as long as the dog and I want. read more

Better hike than camelback. At least I think it's more challenging, you climb upwards way more often than when hiking camelback. The parking here is atrocious and hard to find they have like 30-40 spots and it can get busy but well worth it. Pro tip: try to get here early and if you do grab a headlamp that you can put on your head while you climb, that way you avoid the crazy parking and traffic of people. read more

I was the most hated girlfriend in the world after this hike. My family, boyfriend and I wanted to check out this hike on our day trip to Arizona. After reading the reviews about how easy the hike was that even kids could do it, I thought what the heck let's do it. So we came here around 6:30am and it was packed. All the lots were full but we were able to find a parking spot when someone was leaving. So I recommend going early. No pass needed and parking was free. It was said the hike one way was about 1.5 miles or so give or take, and it did not feel like that at all. Felt so much longer. Keep in mind the entire hike is uphill, lots of scaling up on rock-like stairs. I go hiking occasionally so I wasn't totally out of shape, but still found this to be a bit challenging due to my fear of heights. I did okay until I got closer to the summit. The path got a bit steeper and more challenging. So my fears starting acting up a bit as I got closer to the top, but I managed to finish. My boyfriend on the other hand, whose not very active, had to take lots of breaks, and complained of leg and side pain. I seriously thought he was going to pass out. For that I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but if you're brave enough, why not. After reaching the top you will realize the struggle was all worth the while. Spectacular view of Arizona. Absolutely stunning and breathtaking. Lots of photo ops. Going back down was another story. It was more difficult going down on the steep steps. Tons of banging on your joints from stepping down on each huge steps. Lots of times I found it easier to sit or scoot down as a safer alternative. (Do whatever you feel will get you down safer). Just be aware that you will have tons of hikers who might want to pass you. Overall a fun hike if you are up for stairs or a leg workout. read more

Since I'm talking about hiking in the Phoenix area, I thought I'd update my Piestewa Peak review to highlight some of the topics I've been discussing. Piestewa Peak is sort of a mix between Camelback Mountain and South Mountain Park. It's similarities to Camelback Mountain are it's centrality, convenience, views, parking issues, and crowds. It's similarities to South Mountain Park are the somewhat boring terrain, albeit it's 100% prettier than South Mountain Park, especially in the spring when everything is in bloom. Another similarity to South Mountain Park, is that this is a no-nonsense trail; it's for people trying to get a straightforward workout. What I mean, is that a lot of us are running most of the trail. You'll see a lot of regulars on a daily basis. I used to do this hike on a daily basis until I switched to Sunrise Trail. Sunrise Trail has all the run-ability as Piestewa Peak, but it's much prettier, and less crowds and parking issues, (and less convenient). I was here three weeks ago on a Sunday, and the parking line was about a 20-30 minute wait. CONCLUSION This is a must-do at least once and it's a solid mainstay Phoenix area hike. 4/5 RECOMMEND **************************************************** *****************ORIGINAL REVIEW*************** BACKGROUND Having hiked this trail for 20 years, this is what I learned: THE HISTORY Let's talk about Squaw Peak, I mean, Piestewa Peak... Piestewa Peak is 2,610 feet and is the second highest point in the Phoenix Mountains, after Camelback Mountain, and the third highest in the city of Phoenix. It is located in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Piestewa Peak is named in honor of Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa, the first known Native American woman to die in combat in the U.S. military, and the first female soldier to be killed in action in the 2003 Iraq War. I've been climbing this mountain for over 20 years, although, 20 years ago, I was jogging up and back instead of huffing and puffing up and back and I love this hike! The hike is relatively easy and manageable for most, and has remained consistently maintained over the years. My only complaint about the maintenance is that the use and the erosion has made some of the steps deeper and further apart, but that's just nit-picking on my part. Also, it was called Squaw Peak, instead of Piestewa Peak. Local Phoenicians weren't happy about the name changes on either side, me included. Ok, first of all, what's with the name change? Short answer? Politics and "political correctness." Long answer: Since 1910, the name Squaw Peak had been used in reference to the mountain. Other historic names included Squaw Tit Mountain, Phoenix Mountain and Vainom Do'ag, the Pima name for the mountain. As the term "squaw" is considered derogatory by some, numerous efforts to change the name of the mountain were made through the years. State Representative Jack Jackson, himself a Navajo, submitted a bill to change the name annually beginning in 1992, which generated repeated and often raw debates in Arizona. U.S. Board on Geographic Names policy is to consider changes to features using the word "squaw" when approved by local authorities, but petitioners are strongly urged to choose new names that relate to Native American woman and/or culture. In 2003, newly elected Governor Janet Napolitano petitioned the state board to rename the mountain for Lori Piestewa. The Governor's lobbying, while ultimately successful, proved to be controversial. The controversy stemmed in part from the fact that governor's request violated a required waiting period of five years after a person's death prior to renaming a geographic feature; Piestewa had been killed earlier that year. The state board, approved the name change to Piestewa Peak on April 17, 2003, less than a month after Piestewa's death. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, however, refused to accept a similar petition at the time, citing their own five-year waiting rule. Five years later the board agreed to review the request as the waiting period had passed. CONCLUSION But the name changes ultimately are irrelevant to the hike, and the hike is enjoyable as a daily/weekly workout and is always a fun place to bring out of town guests to stretch their legs and to look at the beauty of Phoenix, without a super long drive or much effort. 5/5 RECOMMEND OF NOTE *Parking can be an issue depending on the time of day and the time of year. Fine, kick my ass you stupid mountain. Because you're all, "Damn, aren't YOU out of shape on this Easter Sunday, lardo, eating buckets of noodles and Chinese fried chicken all week in LA before coming back to Phoenix thinking you can conquer the summit within 20 minutes like you did a couple years ago". So, fine. I am humbled. Groveling in fact. Acing the 7 Summit Challenge in some months' time? Um, yeah. At this rate, I'll be lucky to get through 1. Maybe they'll just airlift me to the top of each one and I'll just roll downhill. But I still made it to the summit in decent time, nevertheless, with a pair of fluttering butterflies and about 20 other people hanging out there to greet me. The entire valley laid out like usual, under a delicious brown layer of dust. Some guy rapping to Young MC (why here of all places, I don't know). Cacti dotting the downward slopes. But the real beauty of Piestewa Peak is the cross-section of Phoenix's humanity seen up and down the trail: a young blond family decked out in BYU gear, some ripped uber-thriathlete guy on probably his third consecutive run up the trail, two East Indian contract workers grimacing and visibly feeling a little vertigo, Grandpa Joe with his walking stick, a mom yelling at her petulant arms-folded teenage daughter in Spanish, and a young goth couple, complete with Cure t-shirts and heavy eyeliner smearing down their faces with the sweat. If you are reading this, you are probably trying to figure out if it's worth the sweat and tan. Now that you are passed that, I will have to tell you that compared to its cousin, Camelback Mountain, it's a notch easier. The nicer, convenient aspect of coming here is parking is a lot better! There's about three little lots that is in the vicinity of the main trail. If you are lucky to see somebody pull out, make a dash! Otherwise, you will have to park along the side streets and neighborhood which means more walking. For most of the trail it gets progressively steeper with some straights and flats. As you get closer to the top, there are some rails to guide you. The one thing that you should know is that the boulders and rocks have sharp edges. You could potentially cut yourself if you slip or fall. Definitely go at a gentler pace if you are a beginner or intermediate hiker. The view is excellent once you reach the top. You can pan everywhere and see downtown. To sum up, it was fun, sweaty, and worth it. This is definitely the type of activity you want to work those glutes and legs. read more

I love starting my day saying "morning" to a bunch of strangers while we're all hiking around Squaw Peak. I've spent a lot of time here and it's a beautiful area. The hike to the summit is moderate; I believe it's barely a mile. Squaw Peak offers many different trails to choose from my favorite is the Perl Charles. There is also a cement walking path that can be used for people that can't tolerate the rocky terrain. I think it's cool that one of the trails goes underneath the 51 even though I always hesitate walking through the tunnel...I've watched too many movies. Another one of my favorite things about Squaw Peak is Tammy. She has boot camp here EVERY weekday at 5:00 AM. I went to her camp everyday for 5 months (before I moved) and it was life changing. Situated just north of the Biltmore, Piestewa Peak (formerly Squaw Peak) offers a magnificent view of the valley. The summit is quite accessible for even a novice climber willing to make the trek to the top. Just be careful to watch your step, especially coming down, because the rocks can be slippery and unstable in certain places. I've rolled my ankle a time or two trying to sprint down the last part of the path. Give yourself about 1.5-2 hrs from the parking lot. Piestewa is an easier climb than Camelback mountain, but more difficult than North and South Mountain. The parking is also very good. When you drive in through Squaw Peak Drive, keep your eyes pealed on the left and right for various openings. Turnover is pretty quick especially during "peak" hours. Piestewa and Camelback Peaks are the two boobs of Phoenix. They're real, and they're spectacular. Of course, being all-natural one is just a slight bit larger than the other, but this is barely noticeable. Camelback is barely 100 feet higher than Piestewa, whose nipple... er... summit, is at 2608 feet. Climb either one and you can enjoy great views of the other at various vantage points, not to mention views of the city. Although Camelback strikes me as a funner climb, I give Piestewa 5 stars because for what it lacks in the intangible fun factor it makes up with being just a tad less insanely crowded. Piestewa Peak Park also has a number of really cool looking trails that don't go up to the summit, which look to me to be worth exploring some day. Speaking of female body parts, the former name for this peak was "Squaw" Peak. This has inspired one of the most ridiculous controversies in modern times in our state. Native Americans are offended by the term "Squaw", and regardless of the linguistic origins of the word, it is basically the equivalent of terms such as "Negress" or "Jewess". In the 1990s, the State of Arizona proposed ending the controversy by renaming the peak after our greatest political leader ever and the father of American conservatism, Barry Goldwater. The whining dipshits who apparently constitute our voting population rejected the idea. They'd rather continue using a stupid name that has no historical or sentimental value whatsoever just to spite Native Americans, rather than honoring one of their finest citizens. And so, in this decade, Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano put an abrupt end to the whole issue. She gave the sqaw-apologists the finger and ordered the renaming of the peak to Piestewa, after Lori Piestewa, the first US woman soldier to be killed in the 2003 Iraq war and a member of the uniquely-Arizonan Hopi Nation. No wonder the summit trail here is one of the most heavily used trails in the country. The climb gives you a fantastic workout and rewards you with ever-changing awesome views of the Phoenix mountains and pretty much the entire Valley as you make your ascent. Be sure to bring water, as you can easily get dehydrated during the ascent even during cool days, and bringing a camera wouldn't be such a bad idea either. If the long climb with its many steep potions too challenging, you can opt for several trails with gentler slopes surrounding this mountain in the Phoenix Mountains Park. read more

Absolutely beautiful views, particularly breathtaking at the very top. Difficulty level is fairly high. I'd recommend it to slightly more experienced hikers - there are a lot of "steps" - but a novice could do it, slow and steady. Be sure to wear shoes with a decently thick soles or tread really carefully. There are lots of sharp stones. read more

As compared to Camelback, this trek offers easy parking, and significantly lower chances of snapping your ankles. One notable perk is the greater chance of falling down the mountain though. This trek is by far a much friendlier, a more pure stair master as compared to the creative rock climbing at Camelback. For the family visit, date, Piestewa Peak is a better choice than Camelback. Expect a decent workout with less peeps and much more accessible for the less fit. read more

I first learned about Squaw Peak from the writings of the noted psychiatrist Dr. Milton Erickson, the driving force behind getting hypnosis approved by the American Medical Association. Dr. Erickson was noted for frequently sending his clients to climb Squaw Peak as a lesson and as a therapeutic ordeal challenge so that they could prove to themselves that they could overcome a difficult challenge as the climb here is certainly not impossible but it offers a bit of a challenge to most folks. This climb in Dr. Erickson's view would act as a physical metaphor that would produce a profound learning in his clients that were unique to them. So I'm always looking to learn new things so I accepted the challenge to climb Squaw Peak. This area is quite often very crowded and the parking lot fills up fast. The trail is very well marked and has been fully developed into what is essentially a winding path of stairs you travel on. There are multiple places along the trail where you can stop and rest as you take in the amazing views which change as you wind around the mountain. There are people on the trails of all skill levels, ages and fitness levels. Some folks are running up an down the mountain and stopping to do push ups as they run circles around the hikers. Make sure to bring plenty of water and anything else you might need as once you start going up you've got what you're going to have. I saw small children make this climb so I would observe most folks should be able to enjoy this hike if they are willing to put the time and effort into climbing it. So what did I learn...? I started the climb with a doctor that I work with and at first we kept pace but he liked to stop and enjoy the view more. I was very focused on completed the task at hand and reaching the goal of the peak. Eventually I pressed on focusing completely on reaching the top of the mountain as I was determined to reach my goal as quickly as possible. I paused briefly a few times to drink some water and look out over the land beneath me as I climbed higher and higher. People would pass by on the trail on the way down or be sitting in any shade they could find as I would nod at them in greeting but my gaze was always upwards and onwards focused on reaching the top. Eventually I came upon a bench with a small brass memorial plate to Dr. Milton Erickson and I had to pause and reflect on this journey. Soon enough I was back to my climb until I finally reached the peak and I waited for my companion to arrive and we enjoyed the view and climbed as far up as we could go to survey all around us. The brief moment passed quite quickly and then we began the descent and again I was completely focused on getting down as fast as possible which I did almost at a jog with again a brief pause at the Erickson bench. When I finally reached the bottom and looked back up at the stream of people flowing up and down the mountain at where I had just been I was happy with my accomplishment of having completed the journey but I wish I would've taken a bit more time to enjoy the journey. So what did I learn...? I think about this climb all the time and how important it is to enjoy the journey while also reaching your goals. I'm looking for new journeys and new mountains to climb and I've got lots of goals to reach. Everybody that chooses to climb has their own rate and way they choose to do it and some work better than others but if they complete the journey to succeed in their goal that's the important thing or is it? Also known as Squaw Peak, this trail is very popular due to it's location -- close enough to the West and East side of the city. Here's the deal Camelback is tougher than this one, but definitely worth the run. If you want a better workout then I suggest to running and hiking the circumference of Trail 302/1A all the way around the mountain and then work your way up to the peak. This will kick your butt and I would only recommend this to hard core trail runners and hikers. It should take at least 2 to 2.5 hours to complete for you speedsters. If you're just planning to do the Piestewa Peak hike then I would time 1-2 hours for amateurs and about 1 hour for advance peeps. - Enjoy! read more

I wish that I could give Piestewa Peak another half of a star. This trail is located smack dab in the middle of the Metropolitan Phoenix Area, the Valley of the Sun. I've been on the trail consistently for almost 8 years now (although I do prefer the Echo Canyon trail on Camelback Mountain.) This steep trail is difficult and hard every time that I hike / run it. There are many ages of people that do the hike and there are a number of benches / seating areas for taking a break. This strenuous hike is not for the faint of heights. On the way up, the trail is narrow and overlooking steep drop-offs on more than one section. Make sure to have plenty of water, a phone and I would recommend hiking it with a partner a few times before venturing up it alone. Also, please use common sense when trying to find a parking spot. There are plenty of ramadas and other trails in the Phoenix Mountain Preserves if the main parking area is full with a line of cars waiting to park. Keep driving north, you will find a spot. There are NO DOGS allowed on this trail because it is so narrow. Allow yourself 1.5 -2.5 hours for your first time up. This may also include the parking issue, resting on the way up, and the walk from the car to the trailhead. Bring alot of water, use sunscreen and have fun. read more

This is my absolute favorite hike in the valley. Granted I have a grudge against camelback since I fell in a cactus there a few years ago. It's 1.25 miles to the top. There's lots of benches for beginners to break and take in the beautiful scenery also. I have been hiking here for a few years now and while I hike up pretty quickly (about 30 mins) I've never caught up w those 22 minute hikers! But pushing yourself to get faster every time makes the workout that much more intense. Woot! It's also a really good conditioning hike before hitting up trails north of us in Flagstaff or Sedona. Guys. This hike is pretty hard! I workout at least 3-4x a week but I have asthma and was still huffing and puffing after taking my inhaler! We made it half way up the the big bend where the trail goes around the other side of the mountain and then had to turn around due to my breathing and time. The trail is rated "extremely difficult" according to the signs. The views were amazing and there are plenty of benches to stop at. The trail has a lot of steps and is quite rocky. It has a pretty good incline to it but it makes coming down pretty easy and quick. To be honest, it was very satisfying hike but we were not prepared. We went as a last minute thing and didn't bring water... that was a mistake & I didn't take my inhaler until about 20 minutes in. Oops. I think we would've had more fun if we were a little more prepared. read more

This hike doesn't have the prettiest view up top but it's a great cardio workout--think a 1.7 mile stair master workout. It took under an hour to get to the top with a couple quick water breaks. There as ample parking, which is refreshing. And no entrance fees! We did the Summit trail, which is rated "extremely difficult" but it was deff doable. I'd say easier than camelback. Overall, it was a solid hike--just not the most scenic but hey it's Arizona desert so what'd ya expect. read more

It was my first time doing Piestewa Peak 2 weeks ago. Overall it was a good trail. It wasn't too busy when I went but there is enough room for those going up and going down to make room for each other as paths cross. It is a bit exerting getting all the way to the top. If you are a beginner hiker or have health problems this may not be the hike for you. Definitely listen to your body going up, I went with my brother and his wife, while my brother and I heart rate were in the 130's-150's on the way up his wife was well into the 180 bpm range. So while others may not feel it as tough be mindful of who you are hiking with. Definitely want to wear the proper footwear if you are doing this hike as there are many steep steps and multiple jagged rocks along the way. It is definitely a beautiful hike to do and a wonderful view when you make it to the top! read more

For as long as I've lived here. I've never hiked this mountain. And now that I have, I'm looking forward to going again. We went on a Friday morning and it wasn't that bad. Parking was a issue at some of the trials like the summit. We found a spot at the Mojave trial. And for a easy trail you get a good workout. Some of parts can be quite steep and rocks can come loose. I threw a few over and out of the way of the trail so no one would slip. People there tend to be pretty friendly. We ran into a guy once we reached the top and he gave us advice on a different route we could take on the way down. Then we ran into him again from the opposite direction and he still let us know the way to go. Very nice guy. And the view is a beautiful site. I could've sat there for hours and just took in the views of the city. I would like to try some of the other trails when parking isn't as bad. And go in the evening to see the sunset. I'm very happy I decided to switch things up from a normal workout routine and take the time to drive here. It was worth it. read more

I hiked Piestawa Peak's "Summit Trail" for the first time today. It's a short hike, about a mile and a quarter one-way, with enough elevation gain (about 1200 feet) to make you feel like you got some exercise! My friend and I started our hike at 8:30am and the parking lot was already full. Apparently, this hike is Phoenix's 2nd most popular (Camelback being #1) and that was obvious, as the trail was already busy with people getting their cardio fix. Piestawa Peak is rated "extremely difficult," but honestly, I saw all different ages climb up this mountain, so the difficulty rating may be a bit exaggerated. If you're new to hiking, take lots of mini-breaks to catch your breath. The trail is well marked; just be careful of the (many) stone steps as a number of them can be on the big side for short people (like myself). It was a beautiful morning and the views from the top were indeed lovely. I do wish that both parking lots were bigger for everyone's convenience, but I am glad I finally got to do this local hike. read more
