This Preserve has really been cleaned up for the better. Once a place for beer drinking, bottle caps and assorted trash, it now is a pleasant spot for hiking. Trails are marked although when you first enter the premises, it is not that clear. I am so glad it really is a Preserve now. One of the nicest things about Phoenix is having hiking opportunities close by. Phoenix Mountain Preserve is a great example of that. This sprawling preserve has a ton of trails to choose from. It's also the home of Piestewa Peak. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon with my buddy who was visiting from out of town. Since he was in charge, I'm not sure what trail we selected but it was a one-hour hike that we followed on the All Trails app. I'd say it was of moderate difficulty and rocky terrain which is what you will mostly find in Phoenix. Your reward, halfway through the hike, is some nice views of Phoenix in between a valley in the mountains. The type of spot you sit for a while and take it all in. While not mesmerizing, it was nice. If you're looking for a ton of different options, of various difficulties and length, Phoenix Mountain Preserve is a great choice. It's right within the city so you don't have to venture far to check it out, either. Parking wasn't an issue at all on a weekend which is nice, too. read more

Great walk/hike. Went yesterday, 3 pm, pretty warm out but this is a nice park/reserve for hiking/running ( if you are at that level) and riding a mountain bike with big fat tires. There's several trails here, but we stayed on the # 100 Trail. Really pretty, and don't underestimate as you could twist an ankle on some of those loose rocks. It's very well maintained and some of the mountains are quite beautiful. Went 3 miles and was a great workout actually. I'll def go back. I bet it's really great in the fall/winter months. read more

Mountain trails in the hills of Phoenix. Phoenix Mountain Preserve is home of the famed Piestewa Peak. Drive and hike further for great views of the city. Plenty of parking. The first lot has a tendency to be full. Drive in a little further. There are great trails from any lot. Restrooms and picnic ramadas are located near the parking lots. The shade structures are low. This helps keep the tables nice and shaded. Trash cans are nearby. Be safe. Lots of signs posted about heat warnings and hydration. There is little to no shade on the trails. For safety sake, trails are closed during excessive heat warnings. Stay on the trails. Keep an eye out for snakes and scorpions. While keeping an eye out for dangerous creatures, don't forget to look for other animals. This nature preserve is known for bird watching. Great horned owls and red tailed hawks are known to inhabit the area. Spring of 2023 has also had a splattering of wildflowers. Most of the flowers where we were hiking were little yellow pops of sunshine. There were also a few purple flowers. read more

So nice to have the variety of hiking trails right in the middle of metro Phoenix. The Peak trail gets the most attention and as such tends to be very crowded which makes for tricky hiking as it is also narrow. Try to do that trail in the middle of the week. I like to do the loop of 8's: 8B, 8A, and returning via trail 8. Catch this loop from the Ocotillo parking lot at the far end. You can do this in an hour if you are quick. Counterclockwise is my favorite way to do this starting on 8B. 8B is the steepest portion and is a bit rocky and loose in some areas, thus best for going up rather than down. Hiking sticks can be helpful. 8A is an easy flat walk and is nice in the spring if there have been rains. 8 or the parallel 304 will loop you back to the parking. The revamped and expanded parking and ramadas are great, nice modern rusted steel look and new restrooms with outdoor hand wash stations, a big improvement. On a weekday in mid November the Park was not crowded and the weather was perfect, though the landscape was dry so not as scenic as in the spring. read more

This is the go to hiking area for me and my brother. He probably hikes different trails here a few times a week. This week we hit the trail and parked a bit higher than usual just in case the rain rolled in but it ended up being a gorgeous evening. Pics below don't do the temperature and views justice. The Phoenix Mountain Preserves are my favorite set of mountains to hike in the Phoenix area! There are six trailheads: 302 & 304 Trailheads both for Squaw Peak, 32nd St. Trailhead, 40th St. Trailhead, Dreamy Draw Recreation Area, and Myrtle Tunnel Trailhead. If I am hiking by myself or with a group of friends, Squaw Peak is my go-to Trail. If I have my dogs or want an easy-moderate walk (instead of a Hike) I go to the 32nd or 40th Trailheads. Everyone I have encountered on any of these trails has been friendly and considerate. Horses and bikes are welcome on all the trails except Squaw Peak. You do find many mountain bikers on the other 4 trails so keep your eyes open because the can come at you quickly! Hope to see you out on one of these trails soon. read more

I came here and meant to do the Piestewa peak but ended up going on the wrong trail and did Ruth Hamilton instead. It was okay; rocky and pretty narrow path with quite a few people on a Tuesday morning, views were average. I came back to do Piestewa Peak and it was great! Hubs and I wanted to get out and go for a hike to start off our 12 year anniversary in nature. These trails are pretty close to sunnyslope which isn't the best area. There is plenty of parking and there was plenty of trails which are all well kept. There are a few different mountains and trails for everyone, beginner to pretty much rock climber. Definitely nice just to get out and get fresh air without it being packed. The views of the city were amazing and can see downtown perfectly from the top. At this time when significant health precautions are necessary, nothing can be more welcome than a place that allows you to exercise and get lots of fresh air and at the same time enables you to observe social distancing with ease. The Phoenix Mountains Preserve definitely fits the bill for this, especially now with its new upgrades. The Piestewa Peak summit trail parking area has been expanded and now has new ramadas, restrooms, and a lot more parking spaces. Same thing with the Cholla parking area (formerly called Mohave parking area) which now has restrooms with an automated hand washing station; it also has new barbecue grills at its picnic ramadas. And as of this writing the adjacent Hopi parking area is being renovated. This solves the preserve's past problems of lack of restrooms and sufficient parking. Good job, City of Phoenix! read more

For a person like myself with bad ankles it was too much high steps and too rocky for me. But others without any knee or feet issues great hike. Beautiful scenery I climb all the way up to marker 12. REVIEW FOR QUARTZ RIDGE TRAIL (#8A) First off, look at google maps on your phone to find the exact location for the parking lot and place a pin so that you can know exactly where to go. The crossroads are E Lincoln Dr & N 32nd St (which turns into E Sierra Vista Dr). The coordinates on google maps: (33.5323240,-112.0122910) When I arrived to the trailhead on a Monday around 12:30PM, about half of the parking spots were filled up. There are 23 parking spots available and 2 handicap parking available. As I waited for my friends to arrive, 2-3 more cars pulled into the parking lot. When we left around ~2-2:30PM, the parking lot was full except for 1-2 spots. You can also chain your bike up (7 spots available) if you choose to bike there. The trail itself was a very relaxed hike. Most of the path is fairly level and you're making your way up a very gradual incline. I think the only potentially dangerous part is that the path is made up of loose rocks so you could slip if you're not careful. At one of the peaks, there's a bench. The view isn't that great? I mean, it definitely looks better in person than it does in photos. But, still pretty meh overall. There's no bathroom at this location. There are garbage & recycling cans and plastic bags for picking up your dog's poop. read more

However it was a little inconvenient the parking lot and entrance to the park and restrooms are under construction. There were portable restrooms for the time being. There are many mountains that one can choose to hike, buuuuuuut this mountain is MY MOUNTAIN!!! The route I choose to take is at the end of 32nd street, it just dead ends and everyone parks there and starts hiking. There are many different trails to choose from and there are quite often mountain bikers on the trail. I love this mountain because it's a good workout but you can get to the top in a reasonable time in which you can make hiking a daily exercise routine. Theres a smaller peak and then another trail that will take you to several peaks and you just choose how far you want to go. In the spring, well usually by February, the Mountain gets filled with desert blooms and butterflies are flitting around! It's such a beautiful sight in our desert, you just can't get that at the gym. I also like it because there are usually at least a few hikers around, so if there were to ever be an emergency, at some point you would most likely run into someone that could help you, so your not in complete seclusion, however it is not completely over crowded as it is in the more popular hiking mountains. Downfalls are that there is no official parking lot on 32nd street or a bathroom...well...the bushes!!! If you go in at Northern there is an official parking lot, but it does get filled very quickly and there is a bathroom! Also it is quite common to see people hiking with there pets. The paths are clear and easy to follow. It's enough work to make you catch your breath but not to intense of a hike that you have crawl or basically Mountain climb. I LOVE Phoenix Mountain Preserve! As I was on one of the trails just prior to Christmas, the hubby and I were trying to name any other city that would give us this same experience right now (meaning a hike like this with glorious weather), and we couldn't come up with one. In the summer, however, we could name a few trails in Alaska, but sometimes even those are deluged with rain. Parking might be an issue. I know that some people will park down in the strip mall parking, but we've been lucky at the parking lot near 32nd and Lincoln. So, take a moment and check that lot first, depending, of course, on the trail you plan to take. I have met very few people while on the trails except for Christmas Day, but even that day wasn't anything like Camelback. Although I might be giving away a secret, the views from the top of 202 are better plus there isn't anyone else at the top except your own party. read more

I work out almost every day indoors, but was feeling like doing something different exercise-wise. It had been a while since I went on a hike so when my friend asked me if I wanted to go hiking to one of her favorite spots how could I refuse? There are several trails at the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The one we went on took about 30 minutes each way at a fast paced walk and led up to the satellite tower on top of the mountain. It was a mix of flat dirt paths and loose rocks with some steeper inclines. I'd say it was a moderate hike, and easy enough that some people were bringing their dogs with them on the trail (Be sure to bring your own poop bags through, no one wants to see your dog's dirty deeds while hiking!). For larger working breed dogs this would be a good hike but probably not so much for small dogs. The nice thing about this trail vs. another one I went on a while back is while there are a few cacti off to the side I didn't see a lot of cholla or cactus pads actually on the trail. There weren't any dangerous critters that I saw (And my friend can attest that she hasn't encountered any while she's hiked here so they are uncommon). While I was hiking I saw some cottontails, a soaring hawk gliding through the air, and Gambel's quail. If you go at a brisk pace and aren't used to hiking steeper trails you might get a bit winded due to the incline and the increase in elevation. I certainly did while going with my friend who hikes this trail fairly often. She zipped up those steep slopes with the lung capacity and prowess of a Himalayan sherpa, while I was huffing and puffing, legs burning, mouth dry and parched trying to keep up with her. I'd like to think I'm fairly fit, but this was a cardio workout for me! The view up top is quite beautiful. You get to see a spectacular view of the city, and if you go at the right time you can watch the sun set over Phoenix. The hike back was nice as the weather got a bit cooler but you do have to be a bit careful of the loose rocks on the trail. I slipped a few times but luckily caught myself from falling. I was impressed by some of the bicyclists that go on this trail. I'm not as much of a daredevil as they are to go zooming down those slopes! To be honest, I personally probably wouldn't go on this trail alone. While there are markers on certain points of the trail, there are a few trails that intersect each other and since I have absolutely no sense of direction I'd probably go back the wrong way and end up as one of those lost hikers you see on the evening news. I actually did start to go down the wrong part of the trail back to the car a few times but luckily my friend has a better sense of direction than me! read more

The trail is pretty straight forward and continues gradually up the canyon and skirts the other more prominent hills to the north and south. Once you get up to the Mormon Loop at the 1.6 mile mark, you have what amounts to a three-way intersection: straight will take you down to the Mormon Loop proper, the the left will take you on the back side of the National Trail, and right is a makeshift trail that ascends up a steep hill (really the first significant climb of the hike). I would highly recommend going to the right, as it give you the best view. The trail then gets a bit tricky, as you go down and have a couple more choices--I stuck with the Mormon Loop, as it seems to go up the highest. After traversing some more for about 1.2 miles, during which time there is a sporadic view, you will arrive at the intersection of the National Trail. To the south is a small but steep hill top, which I would recommend climbing for a nice view of Phoenix and the surrounding mountain ranges. I went left on the National Trail. Once you work your way down, you will be amazed at the cactus forest and the beautiful wash outs you will encounter. The trail continues all the way to Buena Vista, for just over 2.5 miles. There is a lot of up and down hiking along the way, but you feel like you're on an endless quest with no apparent resolution in sight. There are several rocky climbs that will test your endurance, footing and will power. It is so easy to just turn around and go back at this point, but anyone who continues will not be sorry. After several hundred meters of elevation gain, the hiker is treated to an amazing view of Point Buena Vista (another area from which you can access the trail). The good points are that this trail is versatile, challenging and fun. The bad points are that you have to hike a long way for the views, the trail markings are confusing, and there are a ton of mountain bikes. BTW, if any mountain bikers are reading this, I have no problem with sharing a trail with you guys. But just remember that it takes a lot of energy for a hiker carrying a heavy pack to move out of your way--give us time to move. Scaring someone who does not see you coming is a good way to cause them to lose their balance and possibly be injured. If you pass hikers, try not to keep "leap-frogging" them. Also, you should have a bell or horn to warn people you are coming. Most bikers are great, but there are the 10 percenters who refuse to adhere to trail etiquette. Tips: bring poles for footing, plenty of water, and leave early to avoid the heat. Love it here. So many different trails of varying length and difficulty. Got lots of parking spaces too. I've never ran into issues with parking although the summit trail gets quite busy sometimes. The park is open from early morning till 11pm. The gates to come into the park closes at 7pm however. Many of the trails also got nice views of either the mountains orthe city. And it's beautiful during sunset and nights to be up on top of the summit trail. You will need plenty of water especially in the summer and bring flashlights for evening/night hikes. Dogs are welcome other than the summit trail. Have fun! Enjoy and be safe! read more

Easy to find, lot was full so we had to park with other cars on the side of the road. Construction also was going on so it was kind of chaotic. Small sign to get you to the trails. Lots of people out hiking but it wasn't noisy. Easy to get on the trail and I didn't feel rushed or felt I had to move faster than I wanted. Some trails were easy, some more intermediate. What a view! It was kinda strange that we were in a residential area hiking. It was pretty fun. I would probably make this a weekly hike. read more

The Phoenix Mountain Preserve is my favorite place in the valley to hike or trail run. There are miles and miles of trails for the beginning hiker to the advanced. You can choose a hike with decent elevation or you can choose a hike that is fairly flat and perfect for running or biking. The trails are well marked and easy to follow, though be sure to know which trail you are on, because it is easy to veer onto another trail and get very lost (I have done it). There are multiple entrances to different trailheads that are miles apart, so it is fun to explore new routes and catch new views each time. One of the best things about the preserve is that it never gets too crowded like Camelback or Squaw Peak. There are plenty of people out hiking, but the paths never get overcrowded and you don't have to dodge people or battle for position. It is dog friendly as well, which is nice since the other mountains have banned pets due to foot traffic. While there is always the chance of getting hurt on any outdoor hike or adventure, the Phoenix Mountain Preserve is much safer than the other mountain hikes because it isn't as steep or as rocky. If I head out for a hike or a trail run this is normally where I go. It is beautiful, has miles of different trails, and never overcrowded! read more

It was also a very good workout! I can't believe the amount of hiking that is available in the preserve right in the middle of Phoenix! This Mountain has been a great backup plan since Camelback Mountain is closed until the end of Fall. I know, how lame of CAMELBACK!! :( But honestly, this Mountain does the job. It's tranquil and beautiful. It's a great place to get away from it all and just relax with a walk around and up the Mountain, or even a nice jog. The only thing I do want to warn you about is snakes. BE CAREFUL, we came across a striped orange and black snake, nothing too scary looking, more of a cute, large colorful reptile. But still, watch out and bring water bottles since its slowly starting to heat up out there!!! Oh and I can't wait to try out the bike trails!! FUN!!! read more

The hills and mountains of Phoenix makes this one of the most interesting cities in America and the Phoenix Mountain Preserve adds to the experience! There are very few cities where you can go for a full-day hike, climb some spectacular rock formations, see a variety of wildlife, enjoy many different species of cactus and then, after a quick shower, immerse yourself in the many food and night-life offerings that Phoenix provides. On the south side of this preserve you can choose a non-strenuous walk along a well-used path or a fun-filled climb to the top of Piestawa Peak (if you like crowds) or take the 8A to the 202 for a strenuous climb (with almost no people) to a spectacular view of the whole Phoenix valley. The trails on the north side of the preserve (but still to the east of the 51) tend to be flatter so you may run into more mountain bikers or horses. If you decide to enter the preserve from the east side on Tatum, note that there are only five parking slots. A better choice for the east side would be the large parking lot on 40th. There are so many choices. Just remember where you parked your car! read more

Hands down, the Lincoln Rd trailhead is one of my favorite trails, and I love it's right in the city! This is a great trail for hiking or running, and I like to do both! Watch out for critters! Snakes love these trails as much as we do.... Hey dog parents!!!! This is a great trail for my dog -- if you're bringing your dog, remember to bring water for your furry friend... and extra bags for poop. Bonus is this trailhead has a doggie bag dispenser and a waste bin in case you forgot to grab some on your way out the door! Your dog will probably poop - there are too many exciting smells (mine nearly loses her mind sniffing and scurrying after smells - she looks practically manic when we first start out); I can only imagine this is like the canine equivalent of all those tourists who kissed Oscar Wilde's tomb in Pere LaChaise (I never understood that). This trail is generally clean and clear from litter and poop, but it's sorta befuddling to me how some doggers will bag poop but then leave it on the side of the trail. I've passed same bags heading in and on my way out, leaving me to wonder if someone forgot to pick up a "deposit?" I definitely don't mind picking up my little gal's poops, but I do mind picking up other pups' drops (Mr and Mrs Non Pooper Scooper), and leaving doggie drops makes all doggers look guilty by association. I want to retain the ability to bring my dog with me, and although I will grab and bag others, I don't particularly want to be the pooper scooper of the Lincoln Trailhead, so let's work together to keep these trails clean! read more

Preserves are great. You can keep them forever, put them on toast, and pair them well with peanut butter. This is not that type of preserve, but I would still eat toast on it, pair it with peanut butter, and I hope it lasts forever. I don't know how many miles of trails are in the preserve, but there have to be thousands. The Piestawa summit is by far the most popular, but there are many better hikes to be had. My recent favorite in the 8B to the 202 to the 200 to the 303 loop. 5.1 miles of unparalleled views in near solitude. It doesn't get much better. PMP is a testament to excellent urban planning. I almost don't want to write this review because I love how empty it is.... But also there are so many trails broken off from the 32nd street trailhead (parking is not easy because there are less than 20 spots) but it's my favorite hiking spot close to home. There are hilly trails that you can run but also a few trails with some good incline so there's a little for everyone. I like it because it's not nearly as busy as Squaw Peak's main trail (which you can actually get to from the 32nd st trailhead) or either of the Camelback trails. Also, dog friendly! read more

I love these trails. Because there are so many options, you can stream-line a hike suited just for you. Flat, hills, windy trails, far, long, short, loop, line, ect. Almost all the trails allow dogs (Yai ) on a leash, of course. (much appreciated, for those with dogs on leash, {me} and esepcially for those who don't like dogs running at them). Several difficulty levels & lengths. Such a good work-out! All ages. I love the loop trails because i can usually go for an entire hour and rarely run into anyone (another Yai ! here). Gorgeous place to go hiking and catch a sunset! There are many trails, all with considerably testing peaks. If you really want to get all you can out of this hiking adventure, be sure to bring plenty of water and some food and tackle a few of the peaks! Dont settle for just one! The mountain bikers like to hog the paths if you are on foot. I try to just get out of the way and not be a bother. Some people on horseback and always people with dogs around these parts. Just hiked the Quartz Ridge Trail (8a), which starts right off of Lincoln and 32nd. Super easy to find. Parking wasn't an issue on a cold Tuesday morning. Loved this trail, about 100 feet in and you instantly feel like you're not in the middle of the city. Gradual incline with some ups and downs, eventually leading to the peak, I think? I made it to the first bench, trail seemed to go a little further, but overcoming a cold so didn't want to push it. Clocked in at 2.7 miles...trail listed as 3+ so I'm sure there's a bit more to explore next time. Very well maintained, similar consistent incline to Sunrise Peak, just shorter. This is a great hike for those that desire a less busy mountain. Always open parking at the commercial corner off of Lincoln and 32nd. Grab a coffee before or after your hike. Unlike echo canyon they allow dogs. They are supposed to be on leashes, but the trail is rarely monitored and many hikers let their dogs off their leashes just after the parking lot. It's a better kike for dogs that the Cholla Trail on the East side of Camelback (which also allows dogs). Especially for small dogs, given that it has less boulders that Squaw Peak or Echo Canyon. The trail is easy at the beginning but gets more difficult towards the top. Toward the top of the first peak, the trail gets narrow so passing people can be a challenge. After the first bench, you'll go into a draw and they back up a steep hill until you reach the second bench. From here you can see Squaw Peak. If you want to make it harder, take the trail to the South west once you reach the second bench. View from the top is amazing and you will likely have the peak all to yourself. Not sure what the rules are on being on the mountain at night, but I often start this hike at dusk and finish in the dark. It's really great on nights with a full-moon. Once your eyes adjust, you really don't need a flashlight and the city lights are amazing. read more

This part is my updated review ... All along people have been reviewing this mountain hike and checking in at 32nd St & Lincoln. Someone changed the address so most of these reviews on here are from a different mountain than what the address is. In fact, you will see I had checked in over 100 times, but yet I have never been to 1431 E Dunlap Ave. Yelp should figure this out as this is an incorrect rating system for this mountain. This was my review for 32nd St & Lincoln: This is such a nice hike. If you go to the absolute top it's about 1.34 miles. It took me 30 minutes to go up. It starts off pretty easy and gets harder as you go. You an make it as easy or as hard as you want by your pace. It's not crowded and they allow dogs. read more
