I brought my cat in for an issue she was having. The doctor did a great job in communicating to me what was done during the process. However, that is where the good, stopped. My girlfriend went to pick up our cat and, upon bringing her home and opening up the cat carrier, she came out with a bandage on. Taking a closer look lead to show that the IV was still in her leg. A friend of ours works there and came over after her shift to assist us, on her own time. We also noticed that they had done something to her other leg as it was shaved and all bruised. Very upsetting in seeing this, especially after paying a hefty bill. They did a good job in removing her blockage, but not worth the other issues, IMO. read more

My cat got very sick and after several days we took him to Pieper. They admitted him with a high end estimate of $2600 for care. That was shocking enough but we agreed, as we love our cat. They ran every test under the sun and gave us an update only once a day. They never answer the phone either, you have to leave messages . After three nights of being held hostage we asked that he be discharged with the antibiotics and steroids they were giving him intravenously. Upon discharge, our total bill was $5000! With no clear diagnosis!! I have never had such a high vet bill in 40 years of having dogs and cats! To add insult to injury, we did not get a single phone call after we got home to see how Ollie was doing. Stay away from this place! It's just a money making operation. Terrible. read more

On November 7th we took our 14 years old German Shepherd to the ER clinic, our dog was not eating and having bloody diarrhea. The reason I choose your clinic over our regular vet, I want him to get an ultrasound and see if there is no internal bleeding or other internal issues going on. We arrived at the hospital around 10am and made it very clear what is happening with the dog and that we would like to have ultrasound done to see if there is any internal issues. We waited all day with our senior dog, being told that there are more critical cased that ours (which is not totally true, since we spoke to the people in the waiting room and why they were there), finally as a last patient in the waiting room we got called at 8:30pm. After 30min. the doctor called us and informed us that all she can do for us is basic blood work, they don't do ultrasound after hours, and she can not preform other blood test my husband asked for (he is an APRN). She did agree he does need ultrasound or maybe other tests, so she will be more than happy to give us names of other local hospitals that can perform more testing for Nero. Since at this point we were there for 11 hours, we asked how long will it take to do the basic blood panel, she stated about an hour and advised us to grab a coffee and she will call us. At 11:30pm (2.5 hours later) I went back to your hospital and requested to pick up my dog and told them that if the test results are not in the doctor can call us later. We were told if we take the dog, we will not receive the results or medication, because that's not how you do business. I asked the front desk lady if she realizes that we have 14 years old, stressed-out dog in your clinic for almost 15 hours and he should be treated with a bit of consideration due to his age and condition, no compassion whats so ever. We asked if she can bring him out and we will wait with him in the lobby, the answer was NO. Finally, 40 minutes later we got our dog, blood work results that did not give us any answers, medication that may help with his symptoms, if we can get him to eat. Left with no diagnoses and suggestion to take him to a different hospital. The services you preformed for us, I could have it done at my regular vet in 30min visit for a lot less money. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with your services and stuff; how can you keep people waiting for over 10 hours and tell them you can not provide services that we came here to have it done in a first time. They should advise us at 10 am to go to a different hospital, not to mention no compassion for a stressed senior dog, it took him 2 days to recover from the 15 hours day. I emailed the manager the next day, never received a reply. There is absolutely no considerations for the animals or owners, awful quality of services. read more

Staff was very nice/ however they misdiagnosed our dog and didn't even evaluate the correct area. We waited hours in the waiting room for the dog to be triaged, and then were sent home due to wait times. Now, I understand there were more critical patients than our dog but honestly... The vet finally saw our dog and did X-rays over 12 hours later, and sent our dog home with meds and the advice for him to rest. We saw our regular vet today, (3 days later) as there was no improvement, and our dog needed additional testing, medications and is now scheduled for surgery that will cost thousands. I waited 6 hours to be forgotten in the ER Room with my dog and then told I owe them $493.11 Below was our experience Time spent at the Vet 6:50PM - 1:30AM. Showed up at 6:50PM on Friday night. Told to wait in car at 7PM Called in at 8PM for a 1 minute review of Temp & Heart Rate Told to wait in car for another 2 hours to be seen Called into the back ER Room at 10pm No one checked on my dog and I for 2 hours. At 12AM a nurse came and took blood for 3 minutes said she would return in 10-15 minutes. No one ever returned, at 12:45am I stood in the ER back room/staff area for someone to show so I could ask for help. At 1am a nurse came into the break area and I asked for help, she seemed very confused what room or doctor was mine. At 1:30AM I was given my dogs antibiotics and told they would be happy to check me out. I told the vet to bill me if they actually think they did something. I never met the doctor he would only call my cell phone like the wizard of OZ. I received my bill via Email for $493.11, I called Pieper Memorial, with zero care I was told I was billed for the work they performed not the time I spent. (He is 18 years old and blind otherwise in excellent health.) I was told to come right down and he would be triaged upon arrival due to the continued seizures. I get to Pieper, I check in and remind the woman about my dog's condition, I am told to sit down and wait for registration, after waiting over an hour and trying to get someone's attention, impossible! They have off duty employees just hanging out in the lobby area talking to one another about what shifts they were going to be working. One woman off duty brought in her large dog to socialize. She told me that the dog recently was attacked by a large dog and she was trying to get the fear out of her dog. While listening to this dog barking like crazy at sick dogs in the lobby waiting room and charged one she finally left the waiting area and took the dog with her behind the counter to talk to the other working staff. Why would anyone bring their dog to a ER Vet??? Very Frustrated, I finally just walked out with my dog still having another seizure in the car on the way to the other ER vet , wasting more time, I understand that this is a very busy place that must help many animals, But they did not help my Dog. Maybe they should tell staff to keep it professional and be kind and caring to all not just their friends....... Started off kind as I called and told them my cat, who recently had a cancerous tumor removed, couldn't breathe well. He said take her right there and come straight in. He said do not call from parking lot. We get there and I go to run in with my cat. A asked a worker outside if the door was open and she responded extremely rudely "unless your animal is dying, you can go wait in your car and call us." I could't believe it. How could you say that to anyone at all? No matter the situation, the tone and comment were completely unnecessary and unkind. I explained yes, I called and she can hardly breathe and the worker then uncomfortably told me to go in. Honestly, I started to write about the treatment itself but feel it wasn't fair to the vet as i'm sure she tried her best to help in a system that was built to take our money while we watch our animals suffer. Unfortunately, we had to put my sweet girl down a few days later. Nothing worse than watching your animal suffer during her last few days while the workers do nothing for you and are rude to you while you're in complete distress. read more

I live on the west coast but my family has brought our pets to this vet in the past. Today my dog inhaled half of a corn cob and after consulting with his regular vet and the tech that answered the phone at Pieper I decided to bring him in so we could see if he would puke it up. They were super busy on a Sunday night and the people at the front desk handled my situation professionally and calmly. They were able to get the corn cob out of him within 10 minutes of him going into the back and then we sat a bit to monitor him in the waiting room. I really appreciate how well they handled such a stressful situation for me! And a special thank you to the vets here too! read more

Our puppy had an injury, we waited 9 weeks for an initial appointment. She needed surgery and it was scheduled 6 weeks out. One week prior to procedure, it was rescheduled. After the surgery, she would need a second procedure to remove the hardware. Follow up surgery scheduled 2 -3 days after initial surgery. Two weeks prior to surgery, office calls, to again reschedule surgery. Doctor not scheduled to work. On the day of the second surgery, we are instructed drop off was at 730 am and are given explicit instructions be there by 7:30am and wait for 15-20 min of i instruction after dropping off. Not true; told to go home will get call when surgery completed with update on dog. We get a call in the afternoon from an intern, not the MD, intern states MD was here, everything is fine; can come in an hour. We arrive at 5pm to pick up our puppy and go home. We are informed we owe $169, and for what? (Paid $4600 to Piper on day of first surgery; told 2nd surgery procedure included) Per receptionist, and i quote" Well, you came in through the ER she used the bed had IV fluid, and anesthesia, you need to pay" We were told this is included. Receptionist's response and I quote "YOU ARE WRONG!!!" Just great. long day. way too much nonsense... horrible experience.... my response....... NEVER GO HERE EVER! read more

One of the worst vet experiences I have ever had. If I could give negative stars, I would. I believe Pieper is removing negative reviews. No vet even took a look at my turtle even though it had been bleeding profusely for hours before we even got to the vet. When I called ahead of time, I was told that my turtle would be seen because "all [their] ER vets can handle a turtle emergency" even though their normal exotics doctor was not in that day. My mother drove for 45min to Pieper only for no one to even triage or even look at my turtle. We were told after waiting for over 2 hrs to leave the hospital, despite driving 45min to Pieper after RECEIVING THE OK ON THE PHONE TO BRING MY TURTLE OVER. People at the front desk were incredibly rude, remarking how we could "leave" if we wanted to, but no one looked at my turtle? The owner was also rude and threatened to call the police on my mother because she was trying her best in English (English is not her first language) to describe just how much blood my turtle had lost. She was practically begging for someone to look at Turtley. My turtle finally received care in a different Hospital the next day in Mystic, and the staff there were horrified by the treatment we received at Pieper Olson. In fact, my local vet also informed me that Pieper no longer provides the excellent care that it once boasted. In the time that Pieper wasted, a piece of my turtle's shell could not be recovered. I almost never write reviews, but I was enraged by the treatment I received - as someone in the medical profession (not vet though), it is abhorrent behavior to send a patient away without even the courtesy to look at the patient. Especially when we only went to Pieper in the first place because they informed us that they could take care of the turtle! If they did not have capacity, they could have been responsible and sent us elsewhere, as many other vet hospitals did because their reptile/exotics doctor was not there! If my turtle were human, Pieper would have violated EMTALA. I honestly hope the people at Pieper are ashamed of how they treat responsible pet owners. Also! Animal Control in Middletown informed me that they have had many "run ins" with Pieper - take what you will out of that. These people are not qualified to be vets and are not qualified to hold the awesome responsibility of caring for the lives of our beloved pets. read more

I'll be honest. My dog Freija is NOT in love with her weekly physical therapy visits but I couldn't be happier! I've noticed so many good things with her strength and mobility from her PT appointments She chases balls again, enjoys walking again. never fails to greet me at the door (unless it's her PT day in which case she's sound asleep post workout) her energy level is high and her appetite has been distinctly better. Not sure if that's a coincidence, but she just eats better. The amount of time Dr Abbott takes to evaluate Freija is impressive, I can't recall any vet ever taking that time and explaining things as completely as she does. The staff, Eric and Liubov are wonderful, seriously wonderful. I trust them completely. I will forever cherish the videos and pics I've received of Freija in her appointments!! They recommended not doing an X-ray after waiting a few hours from when they called and (I told them in advance) because he has stranger danger they refused to actually check him when they brought him in back. TOTAL NIGHTMARE!! My daughter had a horrible experience here the other night. She drove an hour from out of state to get an X-ray for her puppy who had ingested part of a tennis ball. She was initially told 1-2 hours because puppy needed sedation for an X-ray. After FIVE HOURS with no X-ray (and she had to wait in the car the entire time -- at night), she went in and demanded they release her dog. She was charged a large amount of money for basically FIVE HOURS of nothing before the puppy was released to her without treatment at 1:00 am. DO NOT GO THERE. [Puppy had thrown up the tennis ball prior to going to this vet. A phone call to another emergency vet in the area told her things to watch for and advice on a bland diet. At no charge.] read more

We had to put our dog down a few months ago, which was a horrible experience considering we had him since he was a puppy and loved him dearly. They quoted us a price far below what we ended up being charged, which was $600, and kept calling about payment while we were actually in the room as our dog was being put to sleep. Against my instinct, when our cat had a medical emergency recently, we went to Pieper as they are by far the closest emergency vet to us. We got there only to be told that it would be a 6 hour wait in the parking lot, and mind you they wouldn't even see her and triage her first, she was locked in a crate with severe pain from a bad UTI, so we drove 40 minutes away to Central where they triaged her within 20 minutes. I understand that during COVID, wait times and dealing with clients can be trying. But during these very vulnerable times where our pets are in pain there is a minimum amount of compassion required, which Pieper clearly lacks. I've heard that they used to be a great practice but have had a decline in customer service. We've had mixed experiences with the vets themselves, but overall it seems that the staff is just outright rude and are focused entirely on the monetary value they can get out of their customers. I truly hope they can improve their practice and get back to what they used to be. read more

My Daughter took her 13 year old cat in to have a growth on her leg looked at. They did a biopsy and determined that the growth was cancerous. The Dr said that surgery was an option, Option 1 was to remove the growth. Option 2 was to remove the leg. The Dr talked her out of Option 2 by saying "...you have to try..." Having the leg removed very likely could have saved her. Instead , the growth came back and my daughter opted for a 2nd surgery. After spending over $8,000 on surgeries these predators coldly told my daughter on her last visit that "her cat won't live to see 2023". Would the cat have been ok if they had removed her leg like my daughter asked? This practice needs to remind their staff that people love their pets like they love their family and a little kindness and empathy doesn't hurt. These people prey on families who love their pets. Quality emergency care in a professional facility - it's not super close to home but outshines the other emergency vets in my neck of the woods. I brought my cat in a few weeks back when my vet referred her for an ultrasound. After looking at some x-rays, my vet thought she had a blockage that required surgery so we needed the ultrasound to confirm one way or the other. Shortly after we arrived and checked in, a vet tech took my cat's vitals to see if it was an urgent situation or if she could stand to wait a little longer, but overall the wait was still less than an hour. We left her overnight to be monitored and treated, and the vet called the next day with results. She does have a chronic condition that needs care but it's not looking like surgery is required any time soon. Glad to have their help and expertise - obviously it's expensive but we're lucky to have pet insurance to significantly defray the cost. read more

I brought our greyhound in after hours about 9:30pm after escalating pain and weakness in her legs after a big afternoon run in the park. We were lucky that it wasn't too busy. They checked me in quickly and professionally and I like that you can wait in your car - they'll come and get you when they are ready. We had about a twenty minute wait before being brought in. The technician and doctor were both compassionate and helpful. The service was a bit slow, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of care we received afterhours - as it does seem that many places have a hard time finding quality staff for late night shifts. She was diagnosed with a slipped disc in her neck - sent home with anti-inflammatory and pain meds - and she is on the mend. If you can you might call ahead and ask about wait time and choose between hospitals, because your experience will likely depend on volume at the time. read more

Sadly, my one experience with one ER doctor was poor, and soured me on this vet hospital. My cat was denied the bloodwork and care that may have saved her life. She died 3 days later. My experience with everyone else at Pieper was good. My cat was seen by the Pieper ER on 7/9/23 and seen by a good ER doctor. He admitted my cat Pebbles because of jaundice and weight loss. The next day Pebbles was given an ultrasound,bloodwork and 2 biopsies. The internal medicine doctor diagnosed cholangiohepatitis,pancreatitis and IBD. On 7/12/23 Pebbles was discharged with jaundice that they believed was getting better. In hindsight, I wish she had stayed longer. When she was discharged they scheduled a follow up appointment on 7/26/23. The internal medicine team was good and they always responded to my email questions by calling me. On 7/17, they sent me an email that my cat also had hyperthyroidism. I didn't read the email until the next day and couldn't get the medicine until 7/20. At this point my cat was down to just above 5 pounds. No matter how much she ate, she was losing weight. I don't know why there was such a delay in that diagnosis. I was told by internal medicine that if I had any concerns over the weekend to go to the ER. On Sunday 7/23 , I was very concerned that my cat was extremely dehydrated and worried about kidney failure. I was also worried about her glucose, and the very yellow color of her urine. I brought my cat to the Pieper ER, which is an hour and 20 minutes away. However, it took longer as my cat pooped and urinated in the carrier. Her breathing was almost labored, so I had to keep stopping to calm her down. I arrived at the Pieper ER at about 10 PM. The triage vet was good and even gave my cat a little food as the appetite stimulant I had given her had kicked in. I was told it would be a 5 to 6 hour wait. I could either wait in my car, the waiting room or leave the cat and go home. I opted to stay in the waiting room. As I was in the ER waiting room, I became aware that I was on the bottom of the triage list. I asked another person who arrived just before me if they gave her an estimated wait time and they did not. I saw her come and go home with her cat. At about 1:45 AM, another person came in with a dog who had diarrhea. Her dog was brought right back for examination. I asked if she had been waiting in the parking lot, and she said she just arrived at Pieper. At 2:05 AM (4 hour wait), my cat Pebbles was finally brought in for examination. A few minutes laterI was called in to talk to the ER vet. She first asked why I was there. She had read the discharge report from 7/12/23 on my cat. She noted that my cat had 4 serious chronic conditions and we already know what is wrong with my cat, and she has an upcoming appointment already. It was as if I shouldn't have bothered the ER. She asked why I was giving Cisapride to my cat, since it wasn' t on the discharge instructions. I meekly said that she had been receiving Cisapride for a while. She told me that it was wrong to give to a hyperthyroid cat. I did not know this, and agreed to stop the Cisapride. I was feeling that the doctor didn't think I should be there. I found her to be rather cold and intimidating. There was no apology for my long wait. Then I asked this doctor if she could do bloodwork on my cat for kidney function, glusose and liver. She said that from an emergency medicine viewpoint, there was no reason to do bloodwork on my cat since she has known kidney disease and jaundice. I was stunned and said nothing. As a former lab tech, I should have noted that labwork is also done to monitor changes with known chronic diseases. I felt that she schooled me on the ER physicians role. Thus, NO BLOODWORK WAS DONE which I will regret for the rest of my life. Then I told the doctor about Pebbles distress on the long car ride. I asked if Pebbles could stay and be looked at by Internal Medicine in the AM. She told me this was impossible since they have scheduled appointments. I left after paying the $189 dollar bill for nothing. I felt the doctor was rude and cold. She could have at least done bloodwork to make sure my cat was okay. She asked me to look at it from the ER doctor perspective. She didn't consider my perspective as I was worried about my cat. She did nothing except scold me for giving my cat Cisapride. I ended up taking my cat to a local vet on 7/25/23. She did bloodwork to find my cat was extremely dehydrated and jaundiced. We discussed euthanasia, but I chose to have my cat given subcutaneous fluid and bring my cat home. On 7/26/23 (the day of the scheduled Pieper appointment), the jaundice had gotten even worse. Her paw pads were yellow! She had to be euthanized. On her death bed the vet noted she was full of poop. Due to IBD, her body was used to receiving Cisapride to move things along. read more

What a top notch and professionally run facility!! I had never been here before and was referred to an oncologist for confirmation of cancer in my Chihuahua. I arrived early, checked in and was taken in a few minutes ahead of my appointment time. 2 Vet techs came in right away and took his vitals, etc. I was told my Oncologist Dr. DeRegis, DVM, PhD, DACVIM would be in shortly. Within 5 minutes she came in. She was both friendly and pleasant. Dr. Examined my pet and upon visual observation, poking and prodding suggested the tumors may not be cancerous in fact said 80% of these are benign. VERY different opinion from the referring vet who was almost certain they were cancerous based on the rapid spreading and characteristics (hard). They took my dog in back for needle biopsy's and said they'd call me in 1-2 days. I checked out and my fee was EXACTLY as estimated - and I expected a bigger number because of the biopsy ($192). For an Oncologist consult with biopsy that's a reasonable fee in my opinion. I paid and left. On time, within budget, super professional, very well staffed office / facility earns 5 Stars and 4 paws up from this Yelper! 2 days later I got a call that the tumors are benign, just as Dr. suspected, and am scheduling to have them removed here. Receptionist told me my cat wasn't severe enough to be seen. We were turned away without any sort of clinical assessment/triage. No medical personnel spoke with me or looked at my cat. There was no verbal assessment on the phone. My cats symptoms were lethargy, not eating/drinking x2 days, a walnut sized abscess on his anal gland. I usually use Rocky Hill Animal Hospital for emergency visits, but they refer to Pieper-Olson now. The dangerous practices of the receptionist is why I'm writing this review. There are not many 24 hour emergency veterinarians in general, so my options are limited. What am I supposed to do when I have a sick cat and am told to leave? I would be less anxious if a clinical staff member was able to triage (even on the phone) to determine if my cat will live through the night. Obviously, I would pay for this assessment. It's absolutely cruel to refuse care to a sick animal on the basis that your receptionist feels the acuity isn't emergent enough. I would have waited, knowing that staffing is an issue these days. I couldn't be more disappointed and will do my best to ensure my family, friends, and anyone reading this review steer clear of this facility. If your regular vet is unavailable, please use a different Emergency Vet. Update: I went to Plainville Veterinary urgent and WellCare. My cat is ostipated and being admitted to West Hartford VCA. Update 2: Thank you for looking into this Jesse. As per my original complaint, the receptionist was unable/unwilling to ask questions about the state of my cat. There was no triage, period. Driving around the state of CT is an unhelpful and unreasonable suggestion, as I was in your parking lot. I explained the situation as it happened, you can use this information to continue to improve and educate your staff or you can continue refusing patients. That's up to you entirely. I still can not and will not recommend this hospital and will encourage people to go anywhere else. read more

We were referred to neurology because our primary didn't know what was wrong with our dog. They knew almost immediately what was wrong with our dog, however, for us it was too late and time to put him down. They were clear in explaining the process and allowed us as much time we needed to say our goodbyes. The procedure was gentle and gave us peace being there for our dogs last moments. read more

Customer service is lacking, disorganized, I will never return to this hospital again. While the care was fine, and my dog was seen (11 hours after we first got there), I cannot in good faith give this place more than 2 stars. I don't care how rushed you are, the passing me on to 3 different people, and then saying things to me about my dog like "I don't know, no one told me this..." and then just putting me on hold with no clue if I was talking to the vet or a receptionist is beyond the pale. Please do NOT take your pet here unless you're prepared for miscommunication, shoddy service, and unclear expectations. read more

I have been a client of Pieper Vet for many many years. I have received excellent care overall and have great confidence in their vets. I am able to have informative discussions about care and treatments, and am able to make appropriate decisions for the care for my dogs.
