I was with my friend at the vets and she had to put her dog down today. Remembering I had a paw print kit at home I ran home to get it and was back within 30 mins to ask them for a paw print. Nice lady at front desk took it in back to get it and her Manager Jane told her No. "Cant do it now"... I then learned that my friend had also requested a print at the time she had chosen the cremation, but WTH??? They couldnt do it!? Even if the dog was bagged and in the freezer already, open the bag and reclose. Kit was all set to go! Just needed press of paw! So cold hearted and cruel at a time and moment she needed comfort. Piper has gotten too big and impersonal and many are leaving their service for this reason..... to them its all about the $$$$ read more

Unless you have thousands of dollars to admit and hospitalize, they don't seem to offer much in alternatives. Not likely to go back!!! After the fact I realized there was much more they could have offered to try to help my cat!! They had no trouble performing the $400 ultrasound but never offered to do a simple urine test or tick Bourne disease blood test that might have helped. read more

This review pertains specifically to the absolutely extraordinary care that the veterinary oncologist, Dr. Rita Ho, provided for our dog, Libby. Libby was diagnosed with a cancerous liver tumor. We had a surgical team in Rhode Island pursue surgery and after opening her up they reported to us that her situation was inoperable and imminently terminal (3-6 weeks to live). We scrambled to think through alternatives and were able to get an appointment with Dr. Ho at the Pieper hospital in Stratford, CT. She was knowledgeable, compassionate, and clearly prioritized Libby's health and well-being every step of the way. She did additional X-Rays and advised that we should revisit the possibility of surgery. We explored this possibility with another surgeon and they were able to remove a 2 pound tumor from our 24 pound dog. We went from a terminal diagnosis (with a month or so to live) to a positive prognosis that Libby could very well live for 2-5 more years. We are now working with Dr. Ho to provide Libby with post-surgery chemotherapy in order to reduce the possibility of recurrence. Dr. Rita Ho is an amazing veterinary oncologist. We simply cannot recommend her highly enough. She's incredibly intelligent, up-to-date on the best practices in the field, and will thoughtfully and compassionately engage you as you think about best options for your pet. I tried to call Pieper Olson's, Middletown to make a general appointment for my cat. I waited ten minutes with no answer so I decided to call the Berlin St office. I gave them some of my cat's symptoms and they told me to go to the Urgent Care in Madison but I thought I would just go to Middletown since it's not to far from me. Boy was that a mistake. I went to Pieper Olson's ER and was told there would be at least a six hour waiting period. I understand there are circumstances that are beyond their control but I would have thought the ER desk would say something to that affect especially when I said "6 HOURS". They told me, in a not so friendly tone, I could go to the Urgent Care in Madison which I did and I was in and out in about two hours and that was because they told me that someone was coming in and now I know what the next step is. Unfortunate for them I will no longer be going to the Middletown office unless my cat needs care that Berlin St or Madison is unable to handle. It's sad this had to happen. If they hadn't expanded so much and not hire enough employees to handle the expansion then I'm sure they wouldn't be losing clients, like myself, who has been going there for at least 16 years. read more

This means that your pet is not in a life or death situation if you've been pushed back to wait (be grateful). Bring your own small personal snack if you cannot go for long hours without food. I could not get in to my regular vet and was having an emergency with my cat. I went to the Emergency site they have at 730 Randolph Road in Middletown. My elderly cat was making funny noises while breathing and was in pain. I cannot say enough GREAT COMMENTS about this place. We saw Dr. Andrew Scarano. Every person we saw from the receptionist, techs and the doctor - were all very professional, very caring and understanding. Dr. Scarano showed us the xray explained xray results and everything in such a nice and informative way. My cat was 17 years and 5 months old. She was being treated for thyroid problems by our regular vet. Her esophagus and stomach were very swollen and causing her lungs to not be able to breath well. My other 17 year old cat had recently passed away at home. I did not want this one to have to endure that also. After exams, xrays and discussion it was decided by us it would be best to help her end her suffering. Dr. Scarano was so understanding and caring during this entire process. I am heartbroken to have lost my cat but this was her time. I'm glad they were able to make her comfortable and we could be there for everything. My cat had stroke symptoms. The "triage" vet assistant took my cat's temperature, listened to his heart, and then prioritized nearly all the pets that came in before and after me, meaning my cat was not seen by a vet until 6 plus hours later. I was then told it could be several more hours until my cat's blood was drawn for labs. This place is unprofessional, disorganized, and takes the urgent out of urgent care. You will get faster help for your pet if you drive another 35 minutes outside the area to a well organized and professional emergency vet. read more

Well I'm sorry to say I am very dissatisfied with this hospital. I have brought one of my animals to the hospital and had a very good experience he had to have a few surgeries. Unfortunately one evening one of my other dogs was in distress and I need to bring him somewhere so because i had such a good experience with my other dog I felt it best to take the other one there as well. My husband and I sat for over 3 hours and watched as other people were taken care of after us. I arrived before 10 and finally had to leave at 1:30am. There were only 3 people before us. We brought our large cat in due to trouble breathing. Tech didnt support her back end in any way. Told us we had to wait inthe waiting room until she was evaluated. We were told we were not allowed to wait in thw car. we could not go home, although evaluation could take HOURS. Midnight comes, no word about our cat but we were told for security we HAD to leave the buolding. What happened to having to wait in the building? I had to demand to see someone to find out about my cat. We were told she would be monitored through out thenight and we would get a call by 6 am Yea, nope. No call. Tried to tell me they called, nothing on my cell phone. Barely awake, raced to the hospital, went in at 7:05. The doctor called my cell phone and said she wanted to give me an update? over the phone while im in the waiting room? Unfortunatly, the hard decision was made to put my cat down or waych her suffer. I filled out paperwork, asked for ashes and 2 sets of plaster and paw prints. I was told they would be ready in 2 weeks amd i would recieve a call. 2 months later i am calling to see why i havent recieved a call, dreading another s rew up on their part yet again Yep, thwy had the ashes and 1 set of prints. Was i upset yes, did i raise my voice, sure did. Was i disrespectful? Nope. Other than to ask what good its going to do to get call where the cat was cremated to get another set? Seriously. Used to bring my old dog here for a few of her surgeries, even when you have an appointment they take over an hour to see you usually. Last night he we had to go to the emergency room here for my dog who had puked 9 times that day and I figured out she had ate a toxic plant, they had a vet tech come sit in the waiting room with us and ask what was going on and then she had me call poison control who pretty much said she'll be alright her stomachs gonna be upset for a while. So after being there for over an hour I asked for my dog to get some water and the receptionist (very nice) went to the back and asked the doctor and the doctor said no because they wanted to do an iv of fluids on her. So we waited another hour still hadn't seen a doctor and at that point my dog was ok and acting like herself, panting like crazy, very dehydrated after sitting there for 2.5 hours with no water, and she hadn't drank any for over an hour before we left, as she refused it when I offered before we went and she'd thrown up everything she had so I knew she needed water. So after waiting for 2.5 hours and not seeing a doctor I took my dog said thank you to the receptionist and went and got her some F*CK*NG water. Very upset about the fact I could hear staff members laughing and talking to each other in the back but no one was giving my dog water or an iv. I will never be bringing her back here after they did this. Either give my dog an iv or give her water you got her sitting here dehydrated asf and you clearly don't care. read more

Dr. James Hammond, the neurologist, treated my dog for almost ten years. I always felt listened to and that my dog was getting the best care she could. I never felt like procedures or services were pushed just to make money, and trusted that Dr. Hammond was giving me the best medical advice for what my dog needed at the time and for her future. He provided such compassionate guidance in making a difficult decision, and I will always appreciate that. I will note also that the prices are extremely reasonable. The wait time is often longer than the appointment time so just plan for it, but it's well worth the wait. read more

My dog has a very serious condition that was almost fatal. Dr. Winzelberg is very knowledgeable and great to talk to and plan the treatment regimen together for my dog. Esther the coordinator has been a savior in helping me coordinate multiple appointments and being supportive during a difficult time in my life. I appreciate her tremendously! Been here six hours waited in the parking lot to be comfortable. They saw us for the first visit for checking and ask questions then said I can wait in the waiting room or I can wait in my car so I decided to wait in my car. call me in at 12:30. It's now 2:45 and nobody's even come in the room to see me. I thought they were ready to come in right away. I've been waiting here and waiting and nothing. if I could give this place negative stars I would. I am so beyond disgusted and disappointed with the staff and care here. Please if you love your animal you WILL NOT BRING THEM HERE. My poor beautiful dog was seen here by two different specialists and I spent upwards of $15,000 on her for surgeries, mris and checkups. My poor baby is dead due to the negligence in this understaffed and careless heartless hospital. My dog was admitted here for breathing issues and kept in an oxygen crate for two and a half days. The critical care specialist told me they had found a condition that she had through an echo and stated that if the medication works they would typically know in the first 24 hours. I tried contacting the hospital at night multiple times to see how my dog was doing and they wouldn't give me Any information just that she was "resting comfortably in her crate" when I asked for more information like did she eat food? How is she breathing? Is she still in an oxygen crate? They refused to answer and wanted to give me no information until one of the doctors could call me the next day. DISGUSTING. The doctor calls me the next day to tell me that my dog was doing great on the medication. I was so happy to hear this. Mind you my dog was still in an oxygen crate and It hadn't even been 24 hours on this ew medication. Because all of her tests were run and her bill was jacked up to $4,300 in just two days, the doctor told me he wanted me to pick her up. I expressed I really wasn't comfortable with taking her yet I wanted her to stay there another night monitored on her new medication and OUTSIDE of an oxygen crate for at least 24 hours to ensure she was ok. He refused me and told me to pick her up that she would do better at home. From the moment I picked my dog up and brought her home It was nothing but trauma. My dog was seriously struggling. Non stop coughing and no quality of life. I tried contacting pieper and the doctor who treated her multiple times. He never got back to me and then ended up going away on vacation and the other specialist in the department wouldn't speak to me just Told me to give Her extra coughing medication.I had no idea if this medication she just started was working or not even though the doctor had discharged her saying she was doing great on It when in reality she was doing awful. I brought her back to piepers emergency room two more times and they didn't help in the slightest. The first er doctor there said this was my dogs "new normal" we accepted that and left. A day later my dog declined even more. I drove up to pieper again and took her to the er and the doctor said to me it's pretty black and white, your dog isn't responding well to this medication so your only option is to put her down but that there was nothing else at pieper they could do for me. I told her I couldnt understand how this was possible. Two days ago the specialist here told me she was responding great and now you're telling me she's not doing well and want me to decide here and now if I should put her down or not when I haven't even gotten in touch with the doctor who treated her? She said she appreciated my feelings and advised seeking a consult with a cardiologist. I took my dog home and the next day called piepers internal med department to see if I could get her in there just to be checked in the meantime while I waited for her cardiologist appt. I explained the situation to the coordinator Sarah and asked if there was any way they could see lily because she might not make It through the week with the decline in her health and she told me "nope sorry I have nothing this week only the following week" the most cold heartless and disgusting answer. Didn't say oh I'm so sorry to hear let me speak with the doctor and see if there's something I can do. NOTHING. Didn't even suggest taking my dog to the ER there either. A day later my poor baby died from breathing complications and I had to put her down, mind you this is only 3-4 days after being discharged from the hospital stay at pieper. I contacted them to let them know how devastated I was with the negligence the hospital and staff had shown. all they did was gaslight me and belittle me and stephanie pietra one of of the managers there told me that I was just "grieving" no one apologized or felt sorry for what happened. they told me my dog received great care and was in the best possible hands. they refunded me $400 for the medication they sent me home with that I used for my dog for three days then had to throw out because she was dead. when I was upset with that number (because my bill was $4300 and my dog was dead -and negligently handled) Stephanie got aggravated and dismissive and threatened that she wouldnt refund even the $400 back for the medication. Other than a very long wait time to be seen by the veterinarian (which I know sometimes can't be helped, but is frustrating just the same), I was very pleased with my experience from start to finish. When we left, I felt a gazillion times better knowing my dog had been evaluated by a specialist, and even though we may not know for a week what our next step will be (or if one is necessary), the vet and I were in agreement on how we would move forward. The phone call I received from the person that handles the scheduling for internal medicine was telling! She represented that unfortunately they would be unable to see our Pup for treatment! Because our primary veterinarian needs to perform more extensive tests. West Hartford Veterinary Specialists did a work up including ultrasound and bloodwork, and determined a diagnosis. We were advised to see an internist. If a veterinary clinic is going to have someone on there staff that doesn't have a clue, I certainly wouldn't trust them treating our beautiful pup! Be Vigilant! Good luck ever getting a call back from them. My dog has a heart condition and needs daily heart medication. We tried for 2 years to make an appointment with the cardiologist but kept getting told that we would get a call back once they were able to get a hold of the cardiologist. We never got a call back on any of the numerous times trying to book this appointment Then after 2 years they cut off his medication because he hasn't seen the cardiologist. When we finally did get an appointment they wouldn't see him because my dog wasn't on any sedatives. We didn't give him any sedatives because they were supposed to call us the day before the appointment with any special instructions and they never called. I've been going to this vet for 3 years and it has been nothing but poor communication, unnecessary stress, over-priced medication, unnecessary visits, taking unnecessary time off of work, and with all that my dog still isn't receiving the proper care he needs. Not only was my dog forgotten about in the ER for hours, he was misdiagnose. The staff recommended that he receive hospice care and then be put down. A second opinion revealed this was not the case and our dog has fully recovered and has no further issues. The vet only spoke to me when requested and seemed highly inconvenienced by my questions. I asked for a phone call following my visit to discuss my concerns and was ignored. The negligence exhibited by this clinic puts people's pets in danger, and I will not be considering their practice for any further issues with my family members. read more

I have been on the phone all day trying to find a pet doctor to take care of my sick cat who might be dying . Not one of these vets have shown any compassion whatsoever all they care is in the money money money money . I am 70 years old and I'm on a limited budget and I can't really afford the prices to walk into Piper Memorial Hospital plus 225 that's just for a checkup and physical no medication and no blood test just 225 to walk in there . Fast service in an emergency situation. We walked in with our cat that may have a blockage and was impressed entering on how big and clean this place was. Dogs everywhere yet very quiet and calm. They have a reception area where they will bring you to be checked in and there is a very nice coffee/tea station to help yourself. I do recommend pressing the hot beverage button (next to the coffee one) it takes you to a screen for vanilla mochas !! Every employee was nice that we've met . Paperwork was a breeze and we were in a room within 20 minutes or so. The nurse worked quickly to take necessary information (temp/weight) and made our cat comfortable while doing so . The doctor came in and walked us through options . We chose the less expensive one (x-ray/overnight/fluids/ ) costing a whopping 1200.oo upfront. They are very pricey ,but I guess that's what all hospital situations cost right ? Thank goodness they take the CareCard (pet credit card ) Dr. Landroche was the best !!! read more

Brought our 1 year old Min Pin in for ER visit because of rapid, shallow breathing. After three hours waiting, NOT being told of ANY tests being done, was discharged. "There's nothing wrong."
