So first of all I will say that I will go to great lengths to get quality care for my pets. I have both large and small animals (horses, chickens, dogs etc..) Piper Olsen over my years using them primarily as ER Vets then speciality and even for neurology, physical therapy and other specialities has always EXCEEDED my expectations for their quality of service, knowledge and consideration! My family has over a decade of experience using them. Salem Valley is my regular vet, but in ER for my dogs (greyhounds very sensitive breed) or specialty that Salem doesn't support, Piper is my go to and are knowledgeable and have always done right by us. I had another ER hospital mis-diagnose my mini pin once and I rushed her to Piper, they performed an MRI and brain surgery that saved her life and returned her to normal. MRI's for pets are no different than for people- yes they cost $$ this isn't a charity- their facilities may be nice but they have the specialties to help your pets. Owing, caring and vetting is a responsibility that comes with a cost. Sorry, not sorry. Care Credit can help you with those costs and they'll help you sign up for it right there. My 11 year old Lhasa had a swollen anal gland. I know super gross right? And I called her vet on a Sunday at 9pm and they redirected to Pieper. It was our first visit here. They were helpful on the phone, extremely patient and kind with both me and my babe. My dog was recently diagnosed with cancer and they were just so attentive and kind and thorough. I feel very comfortable bringing her back here if I ever needed to again. And as a bonus, my vet's office called me today to check up on my dog and my visit to another vet. This is customer service at its finest and maybe doctors offices should take a page from how vets offices operate. read more

My Magnolia Mei, who was a Chinese Shar Pei, was admitted because we needed help controlling her Familial Shar Pei Fever and we wanted a professional to monitor her. We were worried that something else was wrong because her fever had been persisting for four days. We had been administering MetaCam to her daily, which helped her fever. When we arrived at Pieper Memorial, we had to wait in the car with her for almost three hours before getting service. By the time she was admitted, she was due for MetaCam. We had asked on multiple occasions for her doctors to give her MetaCam and a chest X-ray. They never gave her MetaCam and told us the results of her chest X-ray after she had passed away on your watch. We called multiple times and asked if they had given MetaCam and to make sure they did. They didn't listen to us-if they really listened to us and took the condition seriously vs trying to reinvent the wheel diagnosing her with other conditions, she might be here. Obviously, the staff at Pieper Memorial is not at all educated on the Familial Shar Pei Fever, or they would have given her MetaCam to control the fever, and they would have treated this situation like the emergency it was. She was being treated for an infection that she did not have and they were trying to control the swelling in her hocks. But if they were educated on this dangerous fever, they would know that another term for the Familial Shar Pei Fever is Swollen Hocks Syndrome and the swelling in her hocks would have gone down if they had focused on controlling her fever. Her blood work had shown low albumin levels and blood sugar because the fever gave her low appetite, and this made her very prone to throwing clots. At this point, giving her a feeding tube rich in proteins could have done the trick. But, my Magnolia's fever was not treated as an emergency. We were even told that they let her fever reach 106.7 at night, most likely because you never gave her MetaCam. And we had to practically beg for updates on her wellbeing. My beautiful girl spent her last day of life all alone in a cage. She deserved so much better than the "service" she received. It wasn't until the morning she died that an observation was made that she was showing neurological deficits and seemed dizzy. But by the time the staff decided to take her out of the cage to examine her, it was too late and she went into cardiac arrest. And they had the audacity to call while they were trying to resuscitate her, asking if we wanted them to keep trying to save her. As a pet owner, I trusted the staff to do everything they could to save my pet, not to basically ask my family if it was okay if they willingly let her go when more could have been done. Pieper Memorial failed Magnolia Mei and we will never in a million years come back. read more

This past Thursday night, my rascal of a cat ate a lily leaf. Maybe two. It's a long story and I was NOT the one who bought these flowers; they're highly toxic to cats. I called Pieper Memorial and they told me to bring him in right away. 48 hours on an IV later, Buster is home and getting back to his usual antics. The staff at Pieper Memorial was extremely professional and kind, making both of us feel better. I knew he was in good hands even though it was hard for me to be apart from him. The cost was also much lower than I expected it to be! I hope we won't need their er services in the future but if we do, this is where we'll go. read more

Nowadays most veterinarian offices that I have ran into only care about their own pocket, well NOT this one, they truly care about your pet! I brought in my 3 year old French Bulldog immediately from my regular vet thinking he had a spinal issue with my regular vet telling me that one wrong move could paralyze him. As terrified as I was, Dr. Perkins recommended an MRI to be performed which we did, while he was under she also did a spinal tap and blood work. Come to find out his results were much better than I expected, he did not have any herniated discs, he ended up having a completely different diagnosis. I would especially like to thank Dr. Jennifer Perkins, Shawn R who really went out of her way helping me with my pet insurance and payment process, Natalie, and Dennis. I usually go to cvc when I have an emergency but tonight had no choice but to go to piper. At drop off they quote me some ungodly amount but at the time my pet is very ill and I'm at their mercy. I put down a deposit of 2600. And by 6 am I'm told my pet has passed and that I'll be refunded 1700. I go there to pick up her body to be cremated at my regular vet and they'll tell me they refund my cards and cut me a check and put it in the mail for my cash. I've yet to get paperwork an invoice or a refund. read more

On Friday 12/30/2022, I took my cat to our Veterinarian in Plainville. They urged me to bring my cat to Pieper for Oxygen. They arranged and advised the facility I was on my way with my cat. On our way to Pieper, my cat took a turn for the worse and became cold to the touch. I knew he wasn't going to make it. We arrived at Pieper, there were so many people (pet parents) standing around carrying on conversations, I felt like I was crazy. A young boy at the desk asked me what I was here for, I said my vet called to let me know we were on our way with our ill cat. He looked and stated we don't have any record of your vet calling. He told me while I was holding my boy, to step over to the other desk. The woman at the desk asked me for my credit card, another woman took my cat and said how do you want us to treat him? I said, you're the vet professionals please examine and medically treat him. They showed me to a room, my husband came in as well and the doctor came in and told us our cat "expired" as if he were a quart of milk or yogurt. Once the doctor left, another staff member came in and handed us an invoice of well over $1,200 dollars. I reacted, you didn't even have my cat for three minutes, he was in grave condition. We did not ask you for heroics or CPR. They immediately went to management and took those charges off. We chose private cremation for our cat, picked out an urn, opted for a paw print and clay print. Our invoice was well over $550+. On Monday 01.02.2023, we received a confirmation call from our vet for a follow up, I asked Stephanie why they did not advise my vet at the time my cat passed, her answer was we were busy. We always follow up, however we have a certain protocol in place. I also suggested they have a private entrance for emergent situations, where you can come in quietly without many people standing around chatting and the use of cell phones. In addition to this suggestion, I also stated they should have something posted for families of pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge, a candlelit and quiet area for grieving. She said this was a first time suggestion, I was shocked to say the least. In summation, I found Pieper to be very uncaring, unsympathetic, unprofessional, un-empathetic as well as not very moral and ethical. I do NOT recommend this facility if you care deeply for your pet(s). read more

My dog went in for an MRI of the brain, because of complications from leukemia. When she was admitted, she was lively, happy and responsive. I expressed my concern to Dr. Hammond that the anesthetic might adversely affect her. He assured me that this was very unlikely. When I picked her up the next day I was given a month's worth of medicine for her, but by the time we arrived home two hours later, she collapsed and was unable to stand. The only variable in her routine had been the anesthetic, which had evidently been too much for her to tolerate. After another 24 hours during which she continued to deteriorate, we had no choice but to euthanize her. I feel terrible that the expensive diagnostic procedure destroyed her fragile quality of life. I wish I had listened to my instincts and refused the MRI, given the risk of anesthesia. I think the doctor should have realized this, too. read more

Going to the emergency room at Pieper was one of the most horrible experiences of my life. I was referred to Pieper by my local vet because he thought my dog might have blown a disc, and my local vet called Pieper to alert them I was coming. I sat for 3 hours in the waiting room in front of the staff while my dog writhed in pain, yelped and moaned. I asked the staff how much longer he would have to wait to be seen, and was told that he would continue to have to wait because there were more critical dogs ahead of him. I don't know how that determination was made because no one ever talked to me or examined him. Eventually he went into shock and became unresponsive in my arms and then they saw him about 15 minutes later and admitted him. They called me 4 hours later in the middle of the night to tell me he was still unresponsive and they were having trouble maintaining his blood pressure, and he probably should be euthanized. I agreed and while I was crying on the phone, they told me to get my credit card so I could pay the $850 bill (right at that moment) for the privilege of watching my dog suffer horribly for 3 hours and essentially "die" in my arms. read more

I checked my pet out after two day stay and spent an hour and half waiting for them to bring my pet out. They had no response as to why it took so long to bring my pet out. They used to be a nice vet practice years ago, but have clearly become too big and too commercial and lets not forget over priced. read more

I can not thank the staff enough for being there during such a stressful time. I had to make an ER visit 2 nights in a row due to my cats condition worsening after an injured tail. Animals are family and the staff definitely gets that. They were so compassionate and patient. Check in and billing were made easy over the phone. The techs were friendly and helpful. Dr. Melissa McDaniel was very thorough and understanding. I was there the night prior so on my second visit I did not have to pay the visit fee again. A worry of mine when going to a new vet clinic is that I'm going to end up at a place where they are just about the money. I did not feel this way at all at Pieper. It is apparent that the staff truly cares about their patients and I found comfort during an uncertain time. read more

I have been here multiple times but it has been for nothing major. I brought my dog in because he was very very sick. They told me what it could be and then confirmed it with a test. I asked what to do next. They said it would be 11000 for treatment. As I and many others were calling around to see who could do something for my sick boy, I asked if they could start any treatment at all so he did not die. They said 9000.00 would have to be paid upfront to do anything. He was there for about 4 hours and they call and said we had 10 minutes to decide what to do.. pay or put the dog down. I finally just went to pick him up and a rescue told me they have a really great vet that is willing to help in NY.. that's a 2 hour ride for me. Screw it he needs major help.. got down there and unfortunately he did pass away because it was just to late. Pieper could have started IV fluids or something to start the care of my dog. But nope they wanted money first instead of doing anything to keep my dog alive. read more

Buckle up, this is a doozy. My family has been going to Dr. Brothers' Middletown Veterinary Hospital since we moved to the area when I was a kid. When I grew up and got pets of my own, I took them there too. I trusted the staff and the business. My husband and I moved out of state for a couple of years, and shortly after we moved back to this area of CT, Pieper Olson took over Middletown Veterinary Hospital. I had heard very mixed things about Pieper Olson in the past, mostly on the negative side. The warnings included their disorganization, poor customer service, rude staff, high prices, unnecessary procedures, and commitment to put money over relationships and patients. We decided to give them a shot anyway. We never saw the same vet for any of our appointments. This made every vet visit feel so impersonal and like we were just another number in line. It also meant that every time we were once again introducing our pet and providing background. Then, with one particular surprise vet, my husband felt so uncomfortable and pressured about elective surgery for our French bulldog. In her whole life she had been with Dr. Brothers, his vet partner, an emergency vet, and our amazing vet and his partner in TX. None of those veterinarians felt it was necessary for her to have the surgery (we consulted all of them as we had heard of the surgery and she's particularly tiny for a Frenchie, so we wouldn't want to risk her health unnecessarily). The vet of the day at Pieper Olson spoke to my husband as if we were bad pet parents. I said we should switch vets at that time and regret that we didn't. They are so disorganized. Notes were being left out of our pets charts causing confusion with each new vet of the day. It was often our word that had to vouch for what had and hadn't been done with our pets which is ridiculous. We stopped receiving reminder cards in the mail to schedule appointments, which almost resulted in our kitten having to start her immunizations all over again (really surprised they didn't push that for $$$). We were told our kitten needed bloodwork before we were going to have her fixed and microchipped with Protectors of Animals (they seemed annoyed that we weren't going to them for this$$$) which POA and our NEW vet (yes this review ends with us finally switching vets) dispute for cats under 8 years old. What drove me to switch finally was when I paid the ridiculous bill for my cats 2nd round of immunizations in February (they also couldn't locate notes for which shot it was; second or final), they automatically charged my card (which they keep on file instead of swiping each time which is scary since they love to make extra $$$) for a pack of Nexgard for my other dog that we supposedly got in December. They didn't discuss this with me before charging me for it "it just happened automatically." So they said they must have given us nexgard without charging us (WTF are you people doing?) or that it was entered by mistake and I could go home and try to figure out the last time I got a pack of nexgard and request a reimbursement if I hadn't actually gotten it. I stayed really calm throughout the interaction at the desk but the woman behind it was bashing her coworkers, blaming them, and was generally unfriendly. I couldn't tell if we had or hadn't taken that pack of Nexgard home so I let it go. That was 2 weeks ago. The following day my husband called Pieper Olson to transfer our pets records to our new vet. He was put on hold twice for 10 minutes by the front desk, the second time a person answered as if he had just dialed in (nobody knows what's going on here). The next day I get a call from records asking if we can confirm that we want records transferred so I call back, no answer (a theme), and leave a message stating that my husband already called and spoke with someone the previous day confirming the records transfer. Finally we feel free of Pieper Olson when I come home yesterday to find a bill in the mail for the mysterious Nexgard from mid-December, which I paid at the beginning of February and it's now February 13! I called immediately this morning, no answer, left a message. It's 5:00 PM and no one has returned my call. Pieper Olson bought Middletown Veterinary Hospital and ran it straight downhill into a dumpster fire! AVOID! read more

Have the decency and professionalism and speak to me directly. I was promised a refund but instead Dr. Olsen took to a website to say I didn't deserve a refund because I never paid for a drug. Maybe she should do her homework and see that the charge she was speaking of was wrong and I never received Palladia because my dog was DEAD so why would I be charged and why would I pay for something I never received. If her agenda was to embarrass me and post my private medical records, then she should know what she's talking about first. Be sure, that despite the guilt I have for bringing my best friend to this hospital , he did not die in vain. Be sure of that. read more

Please bring your animal somewhere else. i have had to bring 2 pets there in past month and they did nothing for my animals. they told me both times that my animal needed invasive surgeries or they could die without any other options. both my animals are okay and did not have the surgeries the vets said they needed, yet my pet was not even given fluids for 4 hours and only after my regular vet talked to them and said she should be getting fluids considering she had been vomiting for almost 24 hours. and not eating or drinking. these people do not care about anything but selling surgeries. they will open your pets up and perform unnecessary surgeries just to make more money. i actually read reviews from ex employees and a couple of them stated that the doctors are urged to sell surgeries and rewarded kindly when they rack up a bunch of funds for the business. both times i went there i was charged $800. for them to leave my pets unattended for hours. the first time i went we were there for 8 hours. i dont even know how this vet can even be considered an emergency vet. they have one vet on duty and the surgeons all leave by 4pm. and once the vets know you're not buying the surgery they treat you like crap. i didn't feel my animals were even safe and protected there. they showed no empathy at all to a family who thought their animal was dying and actually yelled at me saying that my pets breathing was not labored and that it would be a 6 hour wait before hes even seen. they did not believe me when i said that he ate rocks. they said his symptoms dont line up with that. my dog had 30 rocks in him. and they let him sit for 6 hours in a cage before they even looked at him. i am going to check out Central Vet in North Haven for my er vet needs. there is also another emergency vet just over the border in rhode island. i'd much rather drive further to ensure my pets care and life is a priority over money and i will bet it will still be a shorter process than peiper memorial. peiper was great years ago as i have used them in the past. the quality of everything that place has to offer has gone downhill and that includes most of the employees. i had contact with one kind employee out of both times i went. one girl that answered the phone the many times i had to call them inquiring about my pet. oh and when you call peiper you will always be on hold for a long time before you even speak with someone and considering you have to call them to check your pet in from parking lot it just doesn't seem too emergency like. my pet waited 40 minutes in car before they were called in both times. and then sat in cage for hours and hours with nothing. no fluids. nothing read more

We used Pieper Memorial for their emergency services when our cat had kidney stones. They provided excellent care and explained things fully to us. After surgery they sent the stones for testing and recommended an appropriate diet based on the results so we can hopefully prevent this issue in the future. Yes, we had to wait a bit, but like an ER for humans, emergent cases must come first. We were quoted roughly the same price for surgery here as we were another place, so price wise I'd say it was fair. Much like surgery without insurance for humans, surgery for animals is expensive. The doctors and specialists go through a lot of schooling, use expensive equipment, and medications aren't cheap. I'm glad the staff here was well trained and good at their job because our cat is back to his normal self and that's what matters. read more

My poor Molly caught her side on the corner of the screen door and cut herself badly. She needed surgery and my regular vet couldn't do it locally. I've heard good things about this place so I took the drive. I'm so glad I did!! Dr DaVolt was beyond amazing! The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. You knew they cared about their jobs. This happened in September 2020 and I'm still not over it, but long story short, my dog was sick. Very sick. So we took him to the vet after he had a seizure. Summer 2020 was awful. I work in the school system and couldn't find work over the summer. During a pandemic, apparently summer school and camp aren't really too busy. Our savings was drained. We brought our dog in and were told that we needed to come up with $2500 so they can attempt to save his life. Do you know anyone with $2500 in their pocket in the middle of the night because I sure don't. Whatever was in our savings was gone from trying to survive over the summer and we couldn't pay. I asked for some time to set up a GoFundMe, I was denied for that stupid credit card thing, and I even asked for a payment plan. No, they wouldn't give me time to raise money. They told me everyone gets approved for the credit card which was a bold faced lie. And they said they don't do payment plans. Because to them, I could've just gone to my money tree and harvested some money for them. They wanted $2500 right then and there before they attempted to save my dogs life. It was literally the most traumatic day of my life and I felt like no one even WANTED to help me or work with me. I get it things cost money but you can't bill me afterwards or set up a payment plan? I don't know. I just can't shake the fact that my dog would probably be here today if we received at least an ounce of help or sympathy or a simple payment plan. No one cared and the worst day of my life lives on in my mind every single day now. So thanks for nothing. read more

Respectful of pet owners feelings and concerns. I have a cat who has become a Houdini when it comes to getting out of the splint on her front leg. When I arrived at Pieper they were treating a number of critical animals and I was warned of a long wait time. The front desk staff called to their other location in Madison and informed me there was only a short wait there if I wanted to go there instead. I was cautioned that the wait time could change in the time I departed Middletown and went to Madison. I chose to stay as my cat was quiet and I did not want to risk her moving around too much in the carrier during the drive. Several other people chose to go to the other location. When our turn came the staff placed a new splint and were very good with handling my cat. read more

My dog Finn had swallowed part of a Nylabone on Sunday, 11/8. We arrived at Pieper at 11:30. Finn was not seen until 1:30. They were going to give him an x-ray and try to induce vomiting to see if the bone would come up. I was not called about his x-ray and how everything was going until 3:00. The X-rays did not show any of the Nylabone, and it did not come up when he vomited. From 11:30-3:00 were the times that we waited. That means it had been 4 hours since he swallowed the Nylabone. From what I have read and from speaking with a friend who is a vet tech, vomit inducing should occur between 2-4 hours after they have swallowed the foreign object. This may have been why he did not vomit up the Nylabone because they waited too long. I was told when I called to see when he would be seen that there were "critical care patients being seen" that most have been taking priority over my dog and the many other animals that were also waiting. How was this not a critical situation? I brought him here because it was an emergency animal hospital. This was not handled at all timely. I understand that animals that have severe situations need lots of hand on deck to heal them. But this animal hospital needs to also care for the dogs that are there for reasons that could lead to severe situations. It seemed like the animal hospital was very understaffed (waiting for over two hours for my dog to be seen, waiting on hold for 30 minutes to speak with the secretary, the vet not being able to speak with me for over two hours because they were too busy). This was animal hospital was poorly managed and under-staffed. My dog stayed until late at night to be monitored. I was told to call if I had any questions from the vet. After two hours I called to check to see how he was and when I could get him that night. I had to wait on hold for 20 minutes to get to the secretary, and she was told that I couldn't speak to the vet because she was taking care of critical patients. She said should would call me back. Two hours later and I still hadn't gotten a call. I called back and was told multiple times to "sit tight". I had sat tight all day and wanted to get information about my dog. It was so unprofessional how this was handled. Again, if this animal hospital was not poorly managed and under-staffed this would not have occurred. read more

My girl is an 8 year old diabetic aussie/border mix. She had a swollen liver and needed an ultrasound. . I called several times and kept getting someone will call you back. No one ever did. Was instructed to come thru emergency or have my vet call them. My vet called them and they instructed me to come to emergency dept. I call out of work, take my baby in they give me an estimate of 4500$ to keep her there of which I refused, ask them;"anything else I can do? Any alternatives?" "Sorry no.". "I only want a ultra sound. I tell them." They tell me they don't do them at night so I have to come back tomorrow! Why did I go rush in when they told me to come in and lost a day's pay? They waived the fee for a second visit so I take her back in. they tell me they see legions on her liver and spleen. Possible cancer want to do biopsy. They proceed to bring me estimates for this. but I say this isn't my dog? Its an estimate for a 51/2 year old male. Oh sorry please wait more and be devastated. bring me another estimate. Different price. Um this isn't my dog either. Oh terribly sorry.. Egad if they can't get the dog right on three tries for an estimate. "Give me my dog I'm getting out of here. Don't even know if I got the right results!" Are they giving the right treatments to the right dogs? Who knows. I will never go back here. Meanwhile my poor dog has gone thru what? I'm trying to treat her holistically. She's in a bad way and been my best friend for 8 years. I'm going to lose her and Peiper were the most unprofessional, unsympathetic vets I've ever dealt with. I graduated school to be a vet tech. Worked with animals over 25 years with many vets. Never had such a horrible experience! read more

I attempted to use Pieper Memorial recently due to an adverse topical flea medication reaction with my cat. As it was a weekend I had limited options and our usual vet was closed. I live about an hour from Pieper Memorial so I figured I should call first and after about three rings a young man answered the phone, "Hello, what do you want?!". Obviously I was in a panicked state and just wanted to get my cat the help she needed so I ignored the rude tone and statement and began to explain what was going on. Keep in mind this was my first time calling, it's not like I'd called multiple times or talked to anyone yet. His response was that they can't help and to call the flea medication hot line and hung up on me. I don't have a problem with his explanation but the delivery was so rude. Needless to say my cat is fine now but if this is how their employees interact with their customers than I definitely do NOT recommend. To the guy I talked to, try some patience, compassion, or really just professionalism. read more

We, were recommended to Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center by Bolton Animal Hospital ER. The facility is clean and tidy. The staff was very rude and 150% uncaring including a majority of the doctors. They have this attitude that they are always right and the client is wrong. After spending over $4,000 I have no answers as to why my 6 year old lab cannot walk, this included an MRI, spinal tap, labs, ect. and all they could advise is that something is attacking her nervous system in the thoracic region of her spinal column. But, they do not know what. Then why did I spend $4,000? I am not sure, to ask a lot a questions they do not have answers to and even be lied to about what treatments they are preforming on my fur child? Yup that was it. I specifically asked what pain medications is my pet on and I was told by Dr. Hammond that she is just on Gabapentin. Upon picking up my fur child she had a Fentanyl patch stapled to her back. Every time you call to check on your fur child it is someone different you speak to and they do not know much of anything. Upon visiting your pet that is in the "hospital" they literately drag your pet to you in a regular ER treatment room. Where you can visit, but no one comes to check on you, or answer any questions you may have. While visiting you can easily hear the unprofessional banter of the staff that is "caring" for you pets. Who was more concerned about their pizza order that was messed up. In addition to the laughing and joking about god knows what with a radio blaring like it is a dance club. I mean that is totally how professionals act. Especially in a medical setting where, quiet is needed for optimal healing to take place. I would never recommend anyone bring their pet here for anything! They just want your money, to treat you like crap, and give poor care to your pet. There is one doctor (Dr. Urbonis) that none of this applies to and I hope she finds a new practice to be a part of. read more

My dog Rosie recently spent quite a bit of time here,between her surgery and recovery.Dr.mossman ,the surgeon did a fantastic job in a tough area of the leg,And all through the recovery process Dr. Kolvadina Monitored my dog and kept me apprised of her progress and answered all of my questions thoroughly.dr.k was really great and you can tell she truly loves pets,this was my first time at the facility,but I can definitely say they are quality,And everyone I dealt with there from staff to doctors were excellent. read more

I don't understand after reading a letter that practice was going to improve how the communcation is still so horrible and animals continue to suffer. Bedside manner and compassion are so important. I would have thought that perhaps the staff at Pieper would have made improvements after the "training" they insisted everyone was going through. Clearly that didn't happen. read more

I called for an ER euthanasia appointment for my cat that was newly diagnosed with a "baseball-sized" tumor. (Different vet that was in the next town over. I didn't want to drive that far because cats aren't good travelers). Knowing that I had an actively dying cat with me, waiting for over an hour in the parking lot (with my cat meowing and panting in my lap), I would think should be priority. (Of course not TOP priority but up there next to top priority) After an hour+ waiting in the car to be seen, we quickly get into a room and after taking Riley back to get him ready with IV, etc the staff put the cat on a blanket and left. For an unknown reason Riley got a last burst of energy and tried to jump off the table. While I'm holding my cancer riddled cat from falling off the table, we were all alone. I kept thinking, "I've been here many many times. I've had to put down other pets here and this was NEVER my experience, what the hell is going on here?! Where is someone, anyone?" I ran the emergency bell for assistance because it was chaotic and bordering on torture for my poor cat. We needed help. I can hear the staff ask "what's that noise?!" As if they're not prepared if it was an emergency. Either way, someone came in, got my signature and payment. I explained that this entire experience is torture and can someone just please put Riley out of his misery. Eventually the vet came in, very sweet and kind and Riley was finally at peace. That experience at Pieper was horrible. Horrible! I will never come back. 2+ hours of chaos and frustration read more

After being in animal rescue for over 20 years, I've had to deal with many veterinarians and veterinary hospitals. This was the absolutely the worst experience I've ever had. We took our dog there on an emergency basis with spinal issues. We arrived at 1:00 pm and left at 6:45 pm, we sat in the hot parking lot for 5 and 1/2 hours. After 4 hours we called for a status, the receptionist was exceptionally rude, she told us that after 4 hours the vet hadn't even looked at our injured dog yet. Absolutely no communication with owners, it wasn't until my wife and I started to get feisty that suddenly the vet was available. After the vet saw our dog we were given an inflated estimate for what needed to be done. I felt like I was buying a used car rather than discussing a life or death situation. It's clear to me now why it's such a big facility and they drive expensive sports cars. Cash is king there, we received not an ounce of compassion, nor any honest communication from the staff. Our experience was a nightmare. read more

My 20 year old cat was beginning to fail, and I knew she needed medical attention. The staff was completely professional and compassionate in assisting me with making the hardest decision one ever needs to make. I commend them for being able to deal with life & death on a daily basis. I bid farewell to my beloved baby girl, and the process went as well as one could hope. It's never easy, but I am so grateful that Pieper was available for me. read more

Zero stars really... Their ER is awful. They are only taking 'critical' patients these days (if you're lucky) so if your dog is sick enough to not be able to wait for your vet to open but not about to die, they won't take you and you have to drive an hour in hopes somewhere else will. I mean your animal might not be about to die when you first arrive but to sit for 6-8 hours in the hot parking lot I guess could certainly lead to that. I understand vet ERs have been busy these days but if you don't even come out to look at the animal then how can you judge how sick they are? It's honestly scary. I can only hope none of my animals get so sick to the point we can't get anywhere else fast enough and I have to worry about losing them.. Apparently the rude people who answer the phone determine how urgent your visit is without even having someone who knows what they're doing look at them first. Really scary to think about not having a reliable ER in reasonable vicinity to my home and dangerous the way they are handling things. Hopefully this is not a forever lasting issue but unless I have no choice I won't be trying them again. I have zero peace of mind to be able to say they are there when I need them. read more

This emergency veterinary visit was the worst visit I have ever experienced at any vet place. My 12 week old kitten was foaming from the mouth because we gave her flea and tick treatment, her back paw could reach it so she ingested some of the treatment from licking her back paw. My boyfriend and I called this place ahead of time to explain the situation and they said they would take her right in. We drive 45 minutes to this place where we were greeted very kindly from the staff who called our kitten in very quickly (reason for 1 star) where it becomes awful is they told us the doctor would be right in to see us because her levels weren't great at all and she was still foaming from the mouth, we proceeded to wait 3.5 hours with no one checking in on her and eventually we decided to go to the front desk receptionist who then told us not to leave because the doctor will be in to see us in 2-3 minutes they explained there was only one doctor in and they had 2-3 patients ahead of her. We waited patiently for another 10 minutes before we drove 45 minutes back home with a very sick kitten. Luckily she made it through the night so we called our regular vet in Colchester where they made her their top priority and gave her the right medication for her. Definitely don't recommend this place. Very unhappy and disappointed read more

terrible service. my dog is 16 and has had 3 seizures and the first 2, she was able to bounce back from, but this one she isn't doing so well after and she wasn't able to walk. we get there and we wait 3 HOURS just for the doctor to tell us she's fine and can walk normal. when we get home she can't even walk up the freaking stairs and is suffering a lot. they don't help they just want money and tried to get us to get all this blood work and MRI's even though they know how old she is. we also waited 35 minutes for our dog to come out even though they told us it'd be right away. not coming back here read more

I brought my dog to Central Animal Hospital in Guilford on 8/18/22. When i got there, they did blood work and gave us antibiotics for a possible inner ear infection but told us if they didn't work to get an MRI done at Pieper Memorial in Middletown. I brought my dog to Pieper Memorial in Middletown on 8/28/2022 because the antibiotics didn't help my dog so I did as was recommended and went to get her an MRI. I was very disappointed by not only the customer service by the staff but also the care given to my dog. I provided the staff with the information from Central and how I was told to come to them for an MRI of my dogs head. Not o my was I denied the MRI, which was the only reason I went to them, but I was there for 15 hours with little to no communication about the well-being of my dog, what medications they were giving her, or what they were planning on doing. During the 15 hours, all that was done was blood work and they took her blood pressure as well as gave her an injection to help her "stay hydrated". When the blood work came back normal, I was told by one of the staff, "I don't know what's wrong with your dog, sorry. Wait 4 months and hope it improves". When I arrived home, my dog was extremely dehydrated and starving. I have a Saint Bernard and she was so dehydrated she wasn't even drooling. When my dog proceeded to get even worse, I took her to our primary care vet on 9/8 who agreed with Central Animal Hospital that she needed an MRI. I did my research and took her an hour away to the VCA in Shelton where they instantly knew she needed an MRI when we arrived. When the test came back, they discovered she has a rather large, cancerous tumor on her brain stem and going down into her spine. If I wasn't denied the MRI when i went to Pieper and made to feel like I was in the wrong or over exaggerating then maybe I would have found this tumor sooner and been able to treat it. Now it is incurable and there's little to nothing we can do about it. I will never again do business with Pieper Memorial and I will never recommend them to anybody. The customer service was the worst I've ever received and the care for my dog was extremely poor. I now need to prepare to say goodbye to my 2 1/2 year old puppy not knowing if they actually listened to me at Pieper, if my dog could have been helped. read more
