A temporary respite from a soggy morning in KX
    David A.

Mediocre to downright disgusting and overpriced tasteless greasy pies with smiley faces on them (srsly buy a pie from the bakery across the road for half the cost), sausage rolls and quiches. The microwaved soup is alright and so are the perfectly cuboid cake wedges. Get the sandwiches toasted or there is a weird chutney taste. The coffee is standard Sydney coffee but not overpriced and better than Starbuckets, and they have a buy 4 coffees get one free scheme so bring a friend and make them pay. The petite oriental student girls that work there are usually friendly and helpful. Go after 9:30am or in the afternoon cause it's a tiny place with limited seating.

Sandwiches, sandwiches, SANDWICHES!!!…read more Like Joey from Friends, I love me some sandwiches. I believe this place opened less than a month ago, and I noticed it when I went to Single Origin one day and made a note to check it out. As its namesake states, this place is a simple sandwich shop. The interior is cozy, the people friendly, and the music sets the mood. Me gusta. The place is clean, straight to the point with natural and fresh ingredients, affordable (under $10!) and tasty to boot. They don't do sides except for the bread they serve during breakfast, and they also have salads if you don't want to have a sandwich. Let's be real here though, why would you go to The Sandwich Shop and not order a sandwich? Depending on the sandwich, you get to choose what kind of bread you'd like as well between rye, sourdough, and whole wheat. The sandwiches on tap are: Chicken Schnitzel The Sandwich Club Rare Roast Beef Tuna + White Bean Smoked Salmon Bagel The Original New York Reuben Pulled Pork The Ultimate Salad Sandwich You can also create your own sambo if you like. My friend and I ordered the Rare Roast Beef and The Original New York Reuben. If you like cheese, you will like the Rare Roast Beef. The Fontina Cheese used to top this was massive and flavourful. The roast beef could have been a bit more rare for my taste but it was still very good nonetheless. The Reuben...the reuben was great. I wouldn't call it the Original New York Reuben but that's not a bad thing. The Reuben served here was very high quality, as the beef is a thicker and juicier slice than you'd get with a New York Reuben. The cheese, sauerkraut and dressing were great as well. Definitely the best "Reuben" I've had in Sydney so far. If you like sandwiches you can't go wrong here. I'll have to come back to try the others.

My husband and I shared ham sandwich and it was really good. The bread was chewy and soft at the same time. All the veggies they put on are fresh. I recommend putting carameralized carrots. I was bid sad to see how little ham they used tho. They said their recommendations are chicken schnitzel and spicy chicken. If I ever had a chance to go back to Sydney, I would definitely go out of my way to get their sandwhiches again.

We took the opportunity on a day off to visit. Knowing it's popularity, we ordered online which was awesome because it meant they were ready on arrival. Now you can get a sandwich pretty much anywhere these days, but these are more than just your regular sandwich. They are massive gourmet sandwiches, on the softest, freshest bread ever! You can get some of their listed options or alter them on the order if there's something you can't eat. We ordered the "Jimmy Sandwich" on brown bread (you can opt brown or white) with Chilli chicken, lettuce, avocado, caramelised carrot, cucamber, spanish onion, rocket & red pesto. We added some pickles. A delicious and huge sandwich that kept us full for hours. Some other examples include sandwiches with Veggies, chicken schnitzel, ham, poached chicken, smoked salmon and even special add ons of caramelised carrot or potato salad. There's also salads served in little takeaway boxes if you prefer. Salads are dressed with a light balsamic vinegar and olive oil. We went to the Alexandria store and there's a few stools to sit outside and eat. We're super keen to return when we get a day off!

I preferred my pie with smashed potatoes and gravy. We liked Original beef pie the most as it has more beef flavor and it's with chunky beef not grounded beef. I also liked Steak and mushroom. The crusty was a bit doughy (not crunchy enough) for my taste though. The staff recognized us by now and he was very friendly. It's a small food shack but there were some seats available. You can make any pie a tiger pie which is a pie topped with mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy. The flavor was good and the service was quick. Since this is a food truck, there's no real seating just some benches nearby. Everything was great until we sat down to eat. After taking our first bite, we noticed a bunch of rats running around. I have noticed quite a bit of rats during our short stay in Australia. Maybe it's a normal thing here bc people just continued eating and walked by without screaming but that's definitely not normal where I'm from. Also, these rats are not scared. They go pretty close to humans.

North Sandwiches offer a variety of sandwiches including but not limited to burgers, bahn mi, and your traditional white bread sandwich. What I love is the freshness and flavor of the items they offer. As simple as a sandwich may seem, the perfect quality of ingredients make your small meal so much enjoyable. The bread is soft and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Veggies are crisp and green. Meat cooked and flavored to just the right amount of tenderness and flavor. I've tried a variety of sandwiches and recommend that you try different items each visit. It gets quite busy during lunch hours as North Sandwiches is located in a business district near the harbour. The long lines accurately reflect it's popularity. A must visit when I stay in Sydney!

The delicious mix of beetroot, egg, and bacon added to a standard burger is one I'd eat daily (if my diet allowed). But finding somewhere that also let's you choose the type of bread, and then has both chipolte and habenero sauces available to spice up said burger is worth much more than the $10 it cost. Not only was the burger delicious, it was juicy and fresh. The egg could have been a little runnier, but other than that, I find it hard to fault. Now the only issue is deciding whether to have a delicious big arse sandwich, or stunning burger. You win either way.

Walking in here though I do remember this place featuring in an episode of the Australian TV series "Rake". Ah, Cleaver you're so doomed... Excuse me, I digress. Piccolo offers a range of foods from breakfast to light meals and some lunch-y options. Haven't tried their foods though. Coffee is a bit disappointingly so-so. Hope the mob won't mind me writing this, For a landmark I would've expected more flavour in my cup. Nothing that really stands out with this coffee *sob-sob*. Plus, I didn't like the fact that my barista was smoking just before. There's something about coffee and hygiene where ciggies don't come in well. So they taught me at barista school. Is coffee better on Sunday mornings? And if so, barista school taught me about consistency as well. *sigh* On a positive note, it's definitely a place of character with the photos on the wall, it's smallish size with two tables indoors and a few more out on the pavement. With all nightclubs in the vicinity closing at various stages in the morning, you really get a great mix of local flavour and loads of entertainment from the steady stream of 'dazed' people stumbling or bouncing past, as well as the local characters passing by the bustling cafe. The cafe is closed for renovations, but is to re-open early December.
