After doing some online research and talking with a few photographers I decided to work with Stacey. We met in Old Town Alexandria one Saturday afternoon in October. I was nervous at first but shortly into our photo session I felt at ease as Stacey is friendly, professional and fun, not to mention amazing at what she does! She was also great with our greyhound and got some adorable shots of him. Stacey has a wonderful eye for light and color and found a lot of unique backgrounds for our photos. Our online gallery was available after about a week and a half and the results were fantastic! Soon after, Stacey scheduled a free consultation with us to view all our photos on the large computer screen that she has and to help us pick out which prints and framing options we wanted to put up in our home. She even helped us decide how best to place the photos on the wall. We received all our prints last week and have gotten our framed prints up on the wall, we couldn't be happier! If we were staying in the area I would absolutely work with Stacey again in the future.

I moderated a panel last week and a panelist I was being introduced to said, "yes, the woman with the most amazing head shot." Yesterday morning we did our 5th(!) family mini session shoot with Stacey in a garden next to the Capitol. It's wonderful to get these beautiful shots of our children growing up -- and have some shots with me that I love that aren't selfies! Years ago Stacey took an iconic (among our family and friends) photo of my son sulking off to the left of the Washington monument when my husband and I were were standing to the right smiling while pregnant with our daughter. That same day Stacey was able to joke around with our son and get the best shots of him smiling and enjoying himself. Our daughter enjoys the shoots just as much. Thank you, Stacey!

To be honest, I don't think I ever had this much fun while taking pictures in my life! She assisted us choosing our outfits and helped us get as comfortable as possible during the shoot, The results: The pictures came out FLAWLESS, STUNNING... EPIC! We are literally obsessed with every single picture!!! Priscila has a really great eye and vision for taking creative and natural pictures, she captured every little detail I wished for. From the initial email, to the phone call to the emails back and forth prior to our photoshoot, Pri was patient, understanding and took in our requests and thoughts as well. On the day of the shoot, which we chose a nice comfortable hotel room, Pri's team did a great job making my wife look really pretty based on our requests. We felt 110% comfortable in taking our photos as Pri has an ability and energy to keep us going for the 3 to 4 hours of the photoshoot The pictures that came out were really good (hard time choosing) and Pri also was generous in the number of photos that she provided for our choosing. We will recommend her and her team for their absolute level of good service, and great patience and understanding.

From the moment we started our wedding planning, there was two things I knew for sure: That I…read morewanted to marry my husband, and that I wanted to have Judah Avenue as our Wedding Photographer. I was obsessed with Danni Starr's Maternity and Newborn pictures and one of my best friend's Maternity and Newborn pictures that Judah Avenue had photographed. In the early stages of planning, I was so hesitant to reach out to them, because with our wedding less than six months away, I was sure they would be booked and could NOT handle that disappointment. After searching for other photographers in the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia area, I kept coming back to our first choice-nothing could compare to the beauty, elegance, and creativity of their photos. So I took a chance, preparing for the worse. I emailed Judah Avenue in March of 2017, for our September 2017 wedding and for the second time in my life (only second to meeting my husband), I felt like the luckiest girl in the world! THEY WERE AVAILBLE!! And not only that, buy they had also started doing Wedding videography as well! I'm telling you I was so happy I could have cried! Within the week I had spoke to Nafa (the main photographer and founder) as well as exchanged emails with Suzan and put down a deposit for both photography and videography. I cannot explain how sweet these ladies were and how extremely helpful they were during this process. As it got closer and closer to the wedding, Susan became one of the people who completely helped pull my wedding together. Going SOO above and beyond, she helped coordinate the timeline and participated in numerous conference calls with my day-of-coordinator. I am the most indecisive and ill prepare bride in the world and Susan's calmness, knowledge, professionalism, and compassion really made such a difference in the weeks before my wedding. The day before my wedding, Nafa called to relate how excited she was to photograph the wedding and asked if there were any last minute things that they could help with. After getting off the phone with her, I couldn't help but feel so blessed to how this all worked out. On the day of the wedding, Suzan emailed me her best wishes and congratulations for the day. Judah Avenue and its staff had become so much more for me then just photographers- in the weeks leading up to my wedding, they were my sanity! So the wedding day came and I was shocked to see the number of photographers and videographers and managers present to capture my wedding! We had the pleasure of working with photographers Nafa, Nii, and Joseph, with videographers Sherwyn, Kai, and Biam, and manager Nigel. While this may sound like a lot of people, I assure you, once the ceremony and reception got started, they completely blended into the crowd and still somehow capturing amazing footage! Both the photographers and videographers were so helpful in terms of posing, timelines, ideas for pictures, and suggestions throughout the night in order to get the best pictures possible. They were so fun, and kind, and flexible with our suggestions as well- we could not have asked for a better experience. My husband and his groomsmen said they best part of the wedding was taking pictures before the ceremony!! They truly made it feel like we had invited our closest friends to our wedding, who happened to have cameras and be wearing black. They were so amazing, they were even able to pull my husband and I aside during the reception for a mini sparkler session!! Judah Avenue's contract ended about an hour and a half before the actual reception ended and we were actually pretty sad to see them go! About three weeks after the wedding, Maria was in touch with us to provide us a couple (5) pictures while we waited for our sneak peak to be ready! What a tease! It was amazing to have a couple of pictures so soon and it left us just wanting more! We could already tell from the few pictures that we were going to love what was to come!! About 3 weeks later, Maria again provided us with a link to a Sneak Peak Gallery with even more pictures (nearly 150) and a 5 minute highlight video! We were so amazed with the photos and had such a fun time recollecting moments from out wedding together! We had already begun picking images that we wanted to frame around our house, but then remembered that Maria said that this wasn't even the all the final photos, and the remaining would be ready in the next couple weeks! I don't think I need to wait for those photos to leave this review. I am so, beyond words, grateful to have had Judah Avenue as my Wedding Photographer and Videographer. If you are looking for a Wedding Photographer in the Washington DC, Maryland, or Virginia area (I think they even do New York!), you would be doing a disservice to yourself not to consider Judah Avenue. Thank you so much to Nafa, Suzan, Susan, Nii, Joseph, Sherwyn, Kai, Biam, Nigel, and Maria for beyond such an irreplaceable part of my dream wedding.

More experienced photographers may disagree, but as a beginner, I found WSP's "Focus on…read moreComposition" course super helpful. The class tried to instill a habit of thinking through a checklist before taking a picture (or evaluating it afterwards). The checklist included, among other things: * What's the subject? * Do the direction and quality of light work for your subject? * Does the background distract from the subject? * Check the frame's edges: Is the cropping awkward? * Is there comfortable spacing between the elements of your photograph? Our class was small, so in addition to the lectures and the pithy, informative handouts, we could spend more time going over our homework, getting concrete suggestions for how to improve. For example, the instructor (Joe Yablonsky) would sometimes suggest moving the camera up, down, right, left, closer, or further, to get a cleaner background, a more flattering portrait angle, or more interesting "directionality" in the photo's lines. Other times, the instructor would notice patterns-- that my ISOs tended to be too high, or that there's dust on someone's sensor, or that the focusing was sometimes off. He'd then ask how we took the shot, and suggest new settings or focusing methods (or suggest cleaning the sensor!). Sometimes he'd ask the class to weigh in on the critique, so we could also benefit from our talented (and opinionated!) classmates. One session was a fun field trip to the National Mall. At the National Gallery of Art sculpture garden,we chased photogenic squirrels and captured tourists' hilarious reactions to Joan Miro's Personnage Gothique, Oiseau-Eclair. (Google it if you don't know it). I watched as one classmate got several amazing portraits of strangers, just by walking up and asking. The instructor also gave me a demonstration of how to get my camera to focus with a neutral density filter. (I had been having trouble with that). The course just ended last week, and I still need a lot of practice. But it's made my photos noticeably better. (One of my homework assignments even got published last week, as the page 2 photo in the Washington Post Express!) The downsides: Classes can be expensive! (Luckily I had a gift certificate). Sometimes you can find coupons or Living Social deals, e.g. here's one that's on right now (as of late March 2014): http://conta.cc/1jNpdud Washington School of Photography can be a pain to get to without a car. It's somewhat walkable from Twinbrook Metro, but the commute from DC (especially with weekend red line schedules) took me more than an hour.
