We go here for the pollo al carbon, which they only make on the weekends. The grilled chicken is actually quite good. A bit of an unexpected treat in the middle of Memphis. The whole family enjoys their chicken... But even though we generally go for the chicken, we often also have the tacos. I enjoy their carnitas and carne asada versions. Always fresh and delish. A hidden gem! I have passed by it so many times and never knew. I had the Chicken Fajitas lunch special. The portions were sizeable--enough for leftovers! My friend and I went specifically to get the smoked chicken. We ordered the whole. Our server asked us twice if we wanted the half, and we insisted on order the whole one. When she brought our order to our table, we started laughing and realized why she kept asking us if we wanted to whole chicken. The platter was mounded over with a whole smoked chicken, cut into pieces. It also comes with rice and beans, onions and peppers and interestingly, French fries. You have the choice of corn or flour tortillas to make a taco out of all that deliciousness. We ate and we ate until we couldn't possibly fit one more bite in our mouths. It saddens me to say that it's not the same since the move. Our previous visits were awesome, and we were super excited to learn their new address. My husband and I have been twice, and have been disappointed both times. It seems that the quality of the food has gone downhill. My husband got the steak burrito (his Mexican restaurant favorite) both times. Although the burrito is huge, the steak, unfortunately was not good. It was so full of gristle, he finally gave up trying: "I'm tired of chewing this bubble gum," he said. I had my usual the first visit, their famous smoked chicken. It was still flavorful, but just not...well, the same. This time I thought I'd try their tacos, 2 chicken and 1 steak. Lots of meat, but little flavor. Not sure if we'll give them another try. I was a big fan of the food at their previous location, but the restaurant itself was so nasty I only went a few times, so I was excited to see they were in a new spot. Unfortunately, though the building is better (and cleaner!) the food no longer tastes as special. They no longer have their amazing queso fundido, and instead we ordered an insipid cheese dip. The guacamole, however, was fresh and tasty. The fries were also excellent -no frozen sticks here! - But a fairly small portion for the price. I ordered their grilled chicken which is what they are known for and it lacked the spice I remembered. Plus it was VERY dry. I also tried the carne asada alambres which were good but quite greasy. Other dishes sampled: Chorizo gordita: good but little dry barbocoa taco: bland carnitas taco: excellent meat. very juicy - the way it should be! Service was lacking despite there only being a few people dining in. We had to ask several times for different items and the wait for things like drinks or silverware was a bit ridiculous. Overall it was was a pretty disappointing experience. Perhaps it is only because the food was SO good before...Picosos is really not bad but fell short of what I was expecting. read more

In my humble opinion, this is currently one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in Memphis. I can't speak for the old location, but the new one has become a permanent fixture in my weekly lunches (to the detriment of my diet). What makes this place so great is the value. You can get a lot of good tasting food for a fraction of the price. While a visit to La Guadalupana will often times cost me over $15, here you can get food that's even more authentic and often times tastes better and never spend over $10. I mostly recommend the tacos: filled and tasty. The huaraches are also very good and extremely filling, and if you can make it on a weekend, their signature chicken is great and very unique. Also, you get to try 3 different sauces with your chips on every visit. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars from me is the service. The staff is very friendly, but even on a slow day it can take a while to get a refill, a to-go box or even the check. Still, very much worth a visit! read more

I've been to the old location and thew new several times. I won't go into most of their menu as it is better-than-average, though standard pretty standard. What I will do is add my voice to the countless others who have already told you...get the smoked chicken family dinner. It went from $20 from the old location to $22 at the new. It is still the best deal in town. A whole smoked chicken with more than enough of everything else for four people (or two with jumbo next-day lunches). And...it's amazing. First time at Picosos,website said hours on Sat. were 9:00 am but upon arriving,sign outside said breakfast at 7:00 am? My husband got an omlette which was humongous,he will be eating leftovers and all meals came with a waffle.I ordered the chorizo quesadilla which was large as well and came with beans,rice and salad.Chips were freshly fried and three choices of salsa were excellent.The green one was spicy and delicious.Service was fast and prompt,although most of parking lot was taken up by "Bryants" customers.Why people would go there instead of a authentic Latino meal with no wait does not make sense!
