My elderly mother and I went to Pickity Place recently for lunch. My mothers late sister used to go with my mother here for lunch occasionally and she had fond memories of her visits here. I made my reservations weeks in advance because I knew it was a very popular place and it takes us about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive here. We arrived almost an hour early for our 11:30 lunch seating. We used the time to walk around the grounds (which are absolutely beautiful), check out the gardens and the 2 shops in the premises. They ring a dinner bell when it's time to eat (they have set seating times) and everyone proceeded in to get their assigned tables. Unfortunately, our table was out in the sunroom (it isn't as nice as that sounds, not half as nice as the antique dining rooms). Their menus run by the month and the only choices you have is your beverage and a pick of 2 entrees. My mother picked the hot spiced tea and I picked the iced raspberry orange tea and we both loved our beverages. They had French onion dip with crackers on the table which we enjoyed. Next came a cup of lemon egg drop soup with fresh herbs, that wasn't impressive to me. They brought out hot dinner rolls with merlot shallot butter. We were then served a southwestern salad with fresh corn and herbs. For entrees we had the choice of lasagna or a potato, wild mushroom and spinach gratin. We both picked lasagna. The lasagna was different. Instead of the usual big piece of lasagna with lots of sauce and cheese, this was pretty small, pretty dry (for usual lasagna standards) and I'm not sure if I detected any cheese. I'm still not sure about what I would rate it (my husband would need at least 4-5 of them to be satisfied). Then for dessert we were served a blueberry crepe with blueberry sauce and cream, it was amazing, definitely the best part of our meal. We tried to get a weekend reservation in the fall but they were booked for the whole month on weekends when we called. Next year, we will know to book in advance. We settled on a weekend in December, which isn't a bad time to visit because it feels a little Christmassy with the door wreaths and red house in the woods. Just be sure to wear boots or shoes you don't mind getting muddy. The area is rustic! We probably didn't get the full Pickety experience as obviously, winter in New England isn't a time plants can be grown, so the flower gardens and herb gardens were obviously bare. We hope to try again in the summer and fall but as the menu changes monthly, it probably would be cool to visit in all 4 seasons. The prices here are fantastic. You get a full meal for $24. A lot of folks don't know this, so here is a tip ... Pickety Place is BYOB. The corkage fee is a mere $3 per bottle. Yes ... you read that right. Only $3. The menu is posted online in advance so you can choose your wine(s) based on the menu. Given the craft beer craze going on right now, I believe you can also bring BYOB beers, but it might be best to call and verify about the beer. If you are coming here looking for an all you can eat buffet, you are in for a rude awakening. The portions are not gigantic but do fill you up. The food is very good and doesn't taste like mass produced wedding food, conveyor belt style. I have to admit, I expected the flavors to be much more pronounced as they are known for growing their own spices. I'd say the food was 4 out of 5 stars which is pretty darn good considering the unenviable task of preparing 3 shifts worth of food in a small space during lunch service. The star of the show was the pepper stuffed with burgundy beef. I was very ambivalent about this dish before tasting it but the filling was fantastic and the pepper was cooked perfectly. The dish most of us were kind of blah about was the dessert. It was overly sweet and just didn't hit the mark. We also thought that the dip being served with Keebler boxed crackers was kind of eh. Everything else ... salad, soup and main was awesome. As was the herbed butter served with a single piece of fresh bread. The main hit against PP is something they cannot do much about and that is the timing/space issues. The tiny rooms are small ... imagine having a dinner party for 40 people in a tiny house. You check in at this tiny room where a line snakes out the door and then wait 20-30 minutes. The issue is there is only one entrance which forms a bottleneck. I think the larger barn would be better served as a check-in area and/or waiting room. We waited outside in the rain with many others as our seating time was 2 p.m. and the bell didn't ring until 2:30 p.m. Our choices were to wait outside or inside a crowded gift shop. Overall, this is one of those quintessential New England experiences. I don't imagine that too many people (especially out of towners) would not love this quirky experience. This is probably very similar to what dining out was like in the 1800's. You won't experience this sort of vibe too many places. In the Malibu Mountains there is a restaurant called 'The Old Place Cornell' which is similar. Do a little research on menu, seating times, etc. and you'll have a great time at Pickety. If you hate crowds, waiting or having to make reservations in advance, you'll likely be leaving 1 star like the rest of the 'world revolves around me' fatties who complain that they weren't treated like royalty or served un-Flintstone-like portions. read more

This is probably my favorite place on the east coast. No joke - I'm pretty sure dreams come true here. An actual diamond in the rough. It makes life worth living (okay that was dark but it's seriously so good.) Note that I didn't say restaurant because they have a beautiful garden outside and they use the fresh herbs/veggies made there in their monthly menus. I'm not even going to rate what I got cause 1) it changes every month and 2) every single time I leave feeling so so so satisfied; you really cannot go wrong with any menu. I've never had a bad meal here and probably never will. I live out in LA but my family and I come here every time we are in NH. Came across this little hidden spot in route to showing houses- the roads that lead you to this small dilapidated looking cottage is surrounded by flowers gardens herbs and Mother Nature. The doors all seem original and maybe even windows. I couldn't believe that you needed reservations to get lunch. They serve at certain times of the day and set menu-I didn't even see price on the menu had no clue but my bill was $35 for one person- expensive lunch but quite the experience. All the tables were filled and I was so lucky that a reservation did a no show so I got to have this wonderful lunch. The flavors that are on the menu are exactly what you will taste- creative menu and service is right on. I loved the lavender lemonade, the garlic butter with warm rolls, salad that burst with fresh veggies & perfect amount of dressing- I got the blueberry short rib- so good- it was not too rich and went well with the Cole slaw. With the help of Yelp reviews, we literally happened upon Pickity Place 10 minutes before a 2:00 pm luncheon seating, and were so pleased to be seated. While reservations are highly recommended in this 1786 cottage restaurant, and weekend spots are usually sold out, we lucked in to an available seating for this charming farm to table private dining experience! The menu is selected for you, served throughout the month, with crackers and dip, soup, salad, homemade bread and butter, two entree choices, dessert, and a variety of beverages. Each course was delicious, served with fresh herbs and edible flowers. Every bite left your mouth watering for more, and the fresh herb flavors just popped. The service was exceptional, with plenty of wait staff bringing food and clearing plates. Our server, Ashley, was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the courses. She frequently checked in to see if we needed anything. Even though another seating was planned, we did not feel rushed at all. Took my wife there in the fall, the place was packed but ran like a well oiled machine. The food here is spectacular! One thing to keep in mind, this is fine dining and while the portions might look small there's several courses to your meal. Overall I'd give it 5 stars! I've been coming to this magical place for many years and not sure why I omitted it with my reviews .... We were a party of 4 today with the seating time 12:45. Members of our party arrived a bit early which gave us some time to walk among some of the gardens. The sun was blaring hot so we ended up finding some shade. . Much better. Before we knew it they rang the bell. We all lined up with several other people to make our way into the cottage and air conditioning. We were greeted by a cheery host who took my name. Another person showed us to our table.. which ended up being in the sunroom. My only issue with that was that it was quite cramped and took us some maneuvering with other diners ... Let's put it this way - once seated that was it. 2 of us were basically packed where it would be a major inconvenience to leave the table. Our table was set beautifully including a carafe of refreshing lemon/ mint water. We were asked which beverage we preferred from their list and menu which is directly beneath each place setting covered by a glass top. My choice was the lavender lemonade. My dining companion to my left chose their strawberry basil lemonade ... When they arrived both looked and tasted wonderful. Each month there are 5 courses with a dip & crackers waiting for you when seated .. today was a wonderful Dill dip. Our 2nd course was a chilled melon soup with a touch of pancetta... I asked to have it omitted from mine. The soup was delicious but to me tasted more apple than melon .. our next course was a salad. Today 's a beautiful heirloom tomato slices topped with an herbal cheesey type dressing .. garnished to perfection. It ended up being my favorite of all. We were served sliced focaccia perfectly baked with a dipping oil of distinction. Next came the entree - always 2 choices usually a meat or poultry dish and a vegetarian. I of course chose the vegetarian which was 2 rice balls - a combo of summer vegetables , rice fried and semi- covered with a very tasty tomato sauce & shaving of cheese .. outstanding. Meanwhile I'd brought a chilled bottle of wine to share . So we had that too while everything else kept coming. Now dessert time. We were asked if we'd like another beverage. I chose black coffee. Another friend chose Mocha coffee.. the others I believe were still working on their lemonade and of course the chilled lemon/ mint water. The dessert today was a slice of a blueberry pie done very differently than the norm. It was served with a light amount of an orange sauce beneath..and topped with a dollop of whipped cream and garnished beautifully with what looked similar to a hibiscus petal . Not sure if that's exactly what it was. Sometimes it's just so wonderful to spend time over a leisurely lunch without feeling rushed. This staff are obviously very busy, but orchestrate the process flawlessly. It may help that the menu stays the same the entire month. . I'm not sure. We finished up, went outside and took a walk over to the shop and drying shed. It was so beautiful there today it made it very difficult to say goodbye! The hours listed here are misleading. I came in on a Friday to celebrate my birthday in a small getaway from Boston. My AirBnb host recommended this place and I drove an hour out of my way to get here to celebrate the special occasion Upon entering the dining room, I was immediately turned away - the least you could do is be a little understanding. I went on a weekday afternoon to get away from the crowds (and it was relatively empty). Also, if you only serve from 12-2pm you should update that here. I'll probably never be back. read more

We had a great lunch, even in the winter! The gift shop was fun and interesting and when the lunch bell rang we were able to put out things aside and come back to pay later. We didn't find the dining room too crowded at all. It was like a lot of lovely small restaurants we've been to. We had a nice table in the corner of one of the dining rooms, it was private and had a nice jug of water with lemon and herbs already there. From there we ordered from the complimentary hot and cold beverage menu. We got something that tasted like a hot cider, but was a tea, and they were happy to refill throughout. The food was wonderful. We started with New England Vegetable dip with 3 different types of crackers. Very good. Inspired me to buy some dip mix in the shop. Next, minestrone. So delicious. Next Winter Citrus salad, it had grapefruit and a lovely light dressing. Or was very enjoyable. Next was Pesto Bruschetta, out was a nice little bread snack (to be honest I wish it came out with the salad instead of after), them the entree - we had Szechuan pork and fried rice. The pork was so tender! It was delicious and had daikon radish and baby greens on top. For dessert we had Cardamom bread pudding with Bourbon vanilla ice cream. We wish the menu had listed that it has chocolate, as we had a chocolate allergy, but they were able to give him a bowl of ice cream. Overall, I absolutely loved it. Charming little restaurant/store in a quiet section of New Hampshire! We went for lunch on a freezing December Saturday, and really enjoyed the cozy restaurant and the delicious food. Lunch was a fresh and tasty four-course meal, with ingredients straight from the restaurant's own gardens! I'll let my photos speak for the meal. The staff was so sweet, and also super efficient given how packed the place was (be sure to make reservations!). My only complaint is that the check-in could have gone more smoothly, as all of us diners had to stand in one crowded little side room for about ten minutes before they were ready to seat us. The weather was partly to blame, though, since nobody could wait outside! I have been going to Pickity for many years and the food is good. But today I did get a bitter taste in my mouth when we arrived. We had made a reservation for 11 people last week but unfortunately 2 could not make it due to illness. We called this morning when they opened and changed the reservation from 11 to 9. When we sat at our 2 o:clock seating the waitress informed us that we still had to pay for the two that couldn't make it. The price is 29.95 a person! We were never informed of this policy and it says nothing at all about it on their WebSite. Just beware when you make your reservation and make sure no one gets sick!!! read more

Amazing all around! I can't really decide my favorite part because all of it was five star. The menu is a five course prix fixe with your choice of beverages included. I went with my mom and cousin and we had absolutely no clue about this place, other than the Little Red Riding Hood connection, and that it's recommended to make a reservation because they fill up well in advance. Be warned, like the fairy tale, you are going through the woods quite a bit (and on dirt roads) before you find it. But once you do, it's a very charming little cottage with very pretty landscaped grounds. We were scheduled for the 12:45 seating and they were running late, but not to worry, as there was both a little LRRH museum and a gift shop we could hang out it. Once we were seated we were instantly treated to their first and second courses, which for us was crackers + their homemade New England veggie dip and 7 onion soup (kinda like french onion, without the cheese on top). Both delicious!!!! The dip was so good I bought more to bring home. From there we went to the salad which was a Thai melon salad. An assortment of melon and slaw with a thai dressing. Such a palette changer after the dip and soup! And very unique flavors that I would never think to put together on my own. From there we went to the main course, which was a Boursin Beef Wellington. HOLY COW it was good. Instead of the typical mushroom layer in a wellington, this had this amazing cut of very tender beef, smothered in a boursin layer and then wrapped in pastry. I could have licked the plate. And for our fifth and final course, it was a blueberry crumble pie a la mode with homemade cinnamon whipped cream. This was out of this world good. Every course was top notch. There was not one thing any of us could think of that was less than superb. The service was excellent and we were shocked to find how reasonable this was. The three of us dined for the cost of what one of us would have paid elsewhere. If you are looking for something unique, charming, reasonable, and absolutely delicious, look no further than Pickity Place. I can't wait to go back! read more

This was my second time visiting after having lunched here 27 (!) years ago just after the birth of my second child. I returned Saturday, 3/23/19 with my adult daughter, and we loved it! The place is absolutely adorable (think Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood), historically charming (complete with very low ceilings and very slanted floors), and perfectly cozy (imagine a garden tea party inside a small room). Everything was creative and delicious! Super creamy garlic spread. . . layered flavors in a potato leek with arugula soup. . . surprising pops of heat and color in a Greek pasta salad. . . ridiculously imaginative presentation in a Mexican-inspired pork Arancini dish. . . and the lemon-blueberry cupcake with lavender frosting and edible flower on top? To die for! Oh, and the mocha coffee and *lavender lemonade* . . . yummmmmmmy. All this was only $26.11 per person (before tip), too. Pickity Place is a cute little cape out in the middle of nowhere that inspired the illustration for the cabin of the grandmother in an ancient (1920s) version of Little Red Riding Hood. The four course meal was very good, and the beverages(non-alcoholic) were excellent. Pickety Place has 3 seatings per day, and the staff are very efficient about getting everyone taken care of. I recommend getting there early, because you want to enjoy your available time. The rooms are quaint. There are also two gift shops. I hear that the gardens are wonderful, but our visit was in the winter, so I will have to wait to report on that. read more

We have come consistently even after moving away, and have driven through a blizzard to try that month's menu. We always leave with a wonderful experience. From beginning to end, I enjoyed our experience here. My friend has been trying to get me up here for a while now and it did not work out until last week after Thanksgiving. While I had looked at the menu and website, I was really not prepared for the enchanting little house up a hill. I am not one of those "isn't this cute let's spend a lot of money on nothing" kind of person and I am seasoned New Englander and do not suffer tourist traps either. I was very charmed by this place. Let me first say, part of that has to be that we were seated in the "wolf room". This house was used for the illustrations for "Little Red Riding Hood" so they have a room to the side with a bed and paraphenalia. We reserved quite a while ago and when we got there, the hostess asked if we could do them a huge favor and would we mind sitting in this room. Who wouldn't want to sit in this room - a private room to ourselves. Each month there is a different prix fixe menu and it is for the whole month. I realize that maybe some people might find this place "expensive" but I will tell you that you will pay a hell of a lot more in the Boston area where I live for less quality. They start with their dip which is a nice touch over the usual butter and bread, which they also give you - herbed butter and fresh bread. The salad we got was grilled pear and it was delightful. We got a soup as well and it was a no pasta minestrone - I am not a minestrone fan in general but it was decent. They have several options of drinks and you are not pigeon-holed into taking the same one every time and are encouraged to try different ones. The entree was coq au vin stew - I have never had this but it was delicious and delicate and did not feel heavy like some stews can. Dessert was a Tiramisu but it was not your standard it was flavored cardemom and seemed more like a cheesecake but not. The shops on the premise were also very cute and I hear (from my friend who has been before) that the gardens are very lovely during Spring and Summer.
