A friend and I each bought one Vern Bryant fiddle from Picker's Supply. We were not informed that the instruments have significant problems that cannot be corrected. One of the fiddles has a bad neck projection angle and poorly set neck, and also needs a new nut to correct the string height and placement. The tailpiece needs to be replaced to correct a too short afterlength, and the bridge needs to be replaced. These repairs by my luthier would cost $1,200. The other fiddle needs a raised nut, new bridge, smaller soundpost, and new tailpiece. The saddest news is that Vern glued his instruments using wood glue, not hide glue. This means that the neck repairs cannot be made, and any soundpost adjustments will be difficult. Also, because the tops were glued with wood glue, the instruments will not move with weather conditions and may crack in low humidity. As soon as my luthier examined the instruments, I contacted Picker's Supply about these problems, particularly the wood glue issue. They never replied to me. We were each given only one day to take the instruments home and evaluate them. No reputable shop forces you to decide in one day. The industry standard is one week so that you have a chance to take it to your luthier and to play it enough to get a good feeling for it. Also, while I was at the shop, the salesperson told me that a crack in another fiddle's peg box, all the way through to the peg bushing, was not a structural defect. Picker's Supply has a great reputation with mandolin, banjo, and guitar players. But I don't recommend that anyone buy a fiddle from the shop. They do not have the experience necessary to properly evaluate and set up fiddles, and apparently they don't stand behind their work either. Very disappointing. read more

It'll also remain a lesson to not trust small businesses unless you get everything in writing or have a big business, like Reverb or eBay, to hold their feet to the fire if they wrong a customer - which is a terrible shame. Short version: They lied about the aesthetic and structural condition of the guitar, they expected me to pay freight both ways even after I pointed out the structural issues, the salesperson likely tried to extort money from me by saying I wrecked the guitar (until I informed him that I have proof I didn't), and they dragged their feet on returning my money. They also charged me for the inbound wire transfer fee which I had already paid myself, but I didn't fight them about that because I just wanted my money back and $15 wasn't worth any more fighting, especially with Christmas coming up. read more

Long version: Sold a guitar as "like new," and when I received it, I saw scratches all over the soundboard as though someone had wiped it with a rag full of pea gravel. There was also a red spot in the binding like someone had put a red sharpie permanent marker to it. And despite the guitar being a very limited run, custom shop instrument, the inlay job was abysmal, which the store never mentioned, but at least the poor workmanship wasn't their fault. They certainly photographed the guitar in such a way to hide all this though. Later, after further inspection, I noticed the soundboard was bulging up behind the bridge, a significant long term problem for the guitar's action and longevity. Someone had already cut the bone saddle down too, so over time as the soundboard belly pulled higher, I'd be unable to lower the saddle more to get the action down. I even brought the instrument to my luthier who confirmed my fears. I notified the store of the soundboard issue and that I'd like to return the guitar within their stipulated approval period. They said the guitar has "no issues" even after I sent them a picture of the bridge tilted noticeably towards the sound hole and the soundboard belly bulging. They did, however, approve the return as long as I paid the freight. I shipped the same day, and they received the guitar on a Saturday. I hadn't heard from them by Tuesday, so I inquired after the status of the refund. The salesperson asked me to give him a call so I did, during which he claimed the guitar had returned with "significantly more use" than he'd expected. He acted as though the guitar returned to them in shambles and that he'd have difficulty selling it. Ultimately I cut him off and stated that I have pictures of the instrument which prove he was lying. He dropped it after that. (I really do have pictures, and even video showing the whole instrument, in case anyone doubts me) After pestering the store for two more days, I finally received the refund on Thursday, four business days after they'd received the guitar. read more

I've been playing bluegrass fiddle for 14 years. 5 years ago I purchased my current fiddle from them. I wouldn't ever want another fiddle again.
