Both hit the spot and were what we were looking for. Definitely more expensive than outside the airport but what can you do. The service speed is not bad despite being quite busy. Every small table was full. If you have a very short connection I would suggest grabbing a sandwich to go elsewhere. The only lounge in this part of the airport (Terminal 1 section B) is before security, and so we chose not to go to a lounge and to come here instead.

The restaurants does two settings per night with only a 5-course offering maximum for the first round. Regardless, the food was ample for the 5-course choice and I was more than pleased with the experience. While the space is quite small and the staff are always having to move in and around one another to include guests, it works and provides quite an intimate space. The menu is quite straight forward as are the wine pairings, making a choice quite simple so one can get to the meal quickly. The food and service were both great and I have no complaints. From the bread and butter service to the courses themselves, each was of high quality, great looking, and even better tasting. If you are not planning out weeks in advance, getting a reservation here might be a challenge. The wines were mostly German and again, high quality as the wine regions all offer great combinations with the food. All occasions can be served by a visit to Bidlabu and I'm glad I could fit in a reservation.

The food was sufficiently German, on par with German food I've had elsewhere. Lots of meat, lots of mushrooms. The beer was Paulaner; we tried other flavors of this typical beer. Come here when you're in Frankfurt for a typical beer garden experience.

Rather than stare into the abyss of Gate Z-97, I did what any reasonable adult would do: I escaped on a train into town. Best decision of the trip. This place was an absolute oasis. Food was excellent and arrived faster than my flight did. The place was immaculately clean, which I noticed immediately because that's what we do now. Even the bathrooms downstairs were spotless -- a bold move and one they pulled off flawlessly. If you're stuck in Frankfurt with a long layover, don't panic. Get on the train. Come here. Have a beer. Eat well. Remember why traveling used to be fun before airlines ruined it. Highly recommend. Would delay my flight again (not really, but you get the idea).

I took a bus there so I can't comment on the parking situation in the area. Ambiance (4/5): From the outside, Atschel looks like a homey, traditional restaurant. Which is exactly what I was looking for when it cam to my first dining experience in Germany. There's a charming inside area with wooden walls as well as a patio area in the back. I sat inside. Drinks (4/5): Frankfurt is known for apelwein or apple wine. So when in Rome...I had the apelwein spritz which adds soda and Aperol. I will say that straight up apelwein is not my jam. It's nice to try while you're in Frankfurt, but it's too bitter and vinegar-ey for me. With that being said, when you mix it in with Aperol and soda, it's pretty solid. And if you're in a group, you can get the apelwein served in large stone mugs which is pretty cool. Outside of that, they have a lot of beer, as you would expect, and pretty much everything else. Service (4.5/5): I was pleasantly surprised with how friendly and attentive the service was (which is typically not the norm in Europe). Our waitress checked on me, thanked me and said goodbye as I was leaving, and overall, did a great job. Food (4/5): Since this is a traditional German restaurant, I had to go with another Frankfurt specialty: Viener schitznel with green sauce. Schnitzel just means a thin cutlet (often pork) that is breaded. The green sauce is made from seven herbs and while it's a tad bit herb-ey for my taste, it was still interesting to try. The dish is served with fried potatoes. Filling and hearty as you would expect from a German meal. For my first meal in Germany, it was a great start to my trip.
