    Hush puppies
    Benetta P.

It is too easy to end of paying for extra sides or extra hush puppies by accident. Do you want hush puppies as I ordered fish, I say yes but I have no idea they are not included in the price. Chop steak with rice and at the other end what 2 sides do you want. I am not thinking she is wrong because rice is already on the plate. So I answer with 2 sides. Now at the register I am charged extra for hush puppies and that side. The food was truly tasteless. I did throw it all out. The carrots were delicious.

Ate here today while in town for the day- thanks in part to my friend Billy Joe's great review and pics. Everything was delicious. I had a veggie plate while hubby had fried catfish, which he said was great. Place was very clean, restrooms were as well. Veronica took care of anything we needed at the table and was fantastic as was her attitude and smiling face! A great visit all the way around, definitely will be back next trip.

I had a barrel ages old fashioned. The bread was fresh and tasty. The menu has quite a variety...steak, chicken, seafood...something for everyone. We were going for steak. A filet was ordered and two of us ordered the 14 oz ribeye. From what I saw on other tables steak seems to be a favorite. The waitress came back and took salad orders, how we wanted the meat cooked plus another drink if needed. I ordered medium well. After a bit i order another old fashioned. The first one went smooth and good. Not too much ice, just the right amount of liquor. Chilled and good. The wedge salad comes out and it's covering the plate. Thousand island dressing plus real bacon bits. A nice touch. Just enough dressing. After a bit the ribeye arrives. It too covers a portion of then plate. it's a bit peppered but cooked right. The waitress asked us to cut into the meat to verify it was cooked right, they all were cooked as ordered. Truly a treat. The steak is gone, a little bread is left on the table, half the old fashioned is remaining. Definitely will return in the future if I'm in Shreveport. Between the service and quality of the food it's a must visit if you're in town.

To start, the menu pricing is definitely reflecting the upscale steakhouse that it is going for. Their Caesar salad was solid (4/5); I wish they had some anchovies on it though. I got the prime New York strip for my main (16 oz, $68) with a requested medium rare cook. The steak came out a bit tough, even for prime, and the seasoning was overly heavy on the pepper and the fat on the side of the steak needed more rendering. The cook was closer to a medium, which is fine, but it didn't help with the toughness. The sentiment of the group was that there was too much black pepper on all of the steaks and that the cuts were a bit tough (3/5). The sides were hit and miss; the Mac and cheese was solid (4/5), mushroom risotto was a bit meh (3/5), and sauteed mushrooms were also a bit bland (3/5). The crème brûlée was solid as well (4/5) besides the whipped cream on top. Overall, there were some hits and some misses but the toughness of the steaks and the over seasoning brings the steak dinner experience down slightly, especially at this price point.

A quick look at Yelp showed Strawn's Eat Shop listed at number one in diners locally. The inside is a mix of old timey and funky with lots of creative murals painted on the walls. We quickly received our drinks and ordered. Our waitress was outstanding but I didn't get her name. Our food was soon there and we dug in. My chicken fried steak was good but the mashed potatoes and cornbread were the stars. I'm not a big fan of salad or green beans but they were pretty good for vegetation. My wife enjoyed her catfish basket. She prefers cornmeal on catfish over flour breading and was pleased with the crispy cornmeal and the generous portion. Now for the main event. Pie! Strawn's is known for their strawberry pie and for good reason. It was the best strawberry pie that I have ever eaten. The whipped cream topping was transcendent and paired perfectly with the strawberries. My photo does not do this pie justice. My wife went with coconut pie and while it was very good the strawberry was the winner. Looking forward to returning to Straw's Eat Shop in the future.

Lastly, it's the people of Shreveport that really lets you know you're not welcome. I was stationed at Barksdale AFB after an overseas long tour and, as section chief, often bought the flight "Friday dinner," bringing in a buffet lunch between shifts to feed all of them. They'd always ask for Podnuh's and it would always make my stomach turn after my first experience. Just the thought of their wet, flavorless ribs and brisket. At least it was dirt cheap to feed ~30 Airmen. Other than price, I have nothing positive to recall about their food, staff or cleanliness. Ut was the time part I didnt have. So me thinking Podnuhs would be the perfect solution, its what I decided on. Pulling into the parking lot I quickly realized how much this place hasnt changed. Same menu board same colors on the building same dusty cracked up parking lot with weeds growing through it. Matter of fact the only thing that has changed is the prices. I ordered the two meat plate with ribs, brisket, corn and baked beans. I received two ribs and some dry brisket. While I cant complain about the sides although I could swear the plates used to come with some onion and a pepper the meat is a whole other story. The ribs and brisket was dry very dry to the point the brisket looked like brisket chips. The ribs only slightly better but dry. No amount of sauce could save them which brings me to the sauce. Its the same tired watered down flavorless sauce theyve been using for at least a decade or more. Its time to get creative. $19 later and I was left wondering why I didnt just take the time to not waste my time and money. My final thought is dont, but if you do be ready to be disappointed

I attended with a local friend and he confirmed this is authentic. The experience: Friendly staff, a long restaurant with a bar section, followed by the condiments section, followed by a whole other bar somehow? I didn't poke my head back there but I found that intriguing. More on the condiments: They come with any sandwich. I probably took unfair advantage by taking enough lettuce, tomatoes, and onions to make an entire salad. I then asked for dressing, which they happily provided at no charge. And sandwiches? Do get. Delicious bread. The default bread appears to be the French - you could opt for their sourdough if you like - and it's not toasted. I love soft bread, and the po' boy was divine as a result. I loved the boudin. I loved that they have alligator sausage in multiple places on the menu. I loved everything about this place except the fact that summer means just about all of the beers were light, and I had to hunt and peck to find beers more my style. Which I did. And maybe those beers are lingering as I type this review. But BeauxJax gave me the warm, fuzzy, welcoming feeling I love in a restaurant. A great stop in Bossier. Worth a detour from Shreveport.
