I was in the Puyallup area and decided to patronize this Mexican restaurant which was featured by seattlefoodie Steven Nguyen on KING 5 news. Bottom Line Up Front...One star for the cleanliness, easy parking and the thoughtful decor. Steven missed on this one big time. The fact that they didn't have customers when he visited them could have been one of three issues (food quality, poor service, inflated prices). In my case, it was all 3. There were older white folks who saw Steven's article and did mention it to the wait staff. Some of those tables received chips and salsa, most didn't, not sure what goes into their criteria for who gets it and who doesn't. I chitchatted with the wait staff and asked them their specials and what they would want me to tell the Yelpers about them. They wanted me to give the community my honest opinion and said their best sellers are the Quesabirria and ramen (what what?) . Well we decided on neither of those and ordered the $17.95 Chicken Enchilada mole and the $12.90 Chicken Mulitas (each $6.45, staff did not ask if I wanted one or two). To be brutally honest...the Enchiladas were "lean" & dreadful. The mole sauce tasted like mud. The rice and beans was barely palatable (La Preferida from Safeway might have been better!). The Mulitas was ok but not something that I would miss. The red and green salsa from those plastic bottles was salty...as were all of the dishes...saltier... The plates were small, the price tag was hefty, paid extra for mole sauce (this was NOT a side order but something that is supposed to be the core dish sauce), extra for credit card use (3%). Nickel and diming...what next...clean your own table... quarter for restroom use! Of course, none of these upcharges were mentioned or listed anywhere that I could see... Service was just ok...they didn't talk about any specials or drinks...so we didn't order one. And the biggest kicker...no complimentary chips and salsa unlike those other hardworking Mexican joints awaiting your business. There was no hook; all sinker...Somehow, they think of themselves as "Cactus" but lack the basics of competing for your business. I ended up with an upset stomach later that evening. Don't take my word only...read the other reviewers observations in a bit more detail while ignoring the stars and judge for yourself. Sorry if my review sounds too brutal, which I hate to do knowing how hard it is to run a restaurant. I greatly respect the hard working folks in the restaurant industry. We came after seeing the owners son post a TikTok video asking the community to support his father's restaurant. Everyone including the owner was so extremely nice. We made it there around 6:30pm on a Friday during a busy time but managed to get seating quickly. Though the restaurant looked clean and the employees were quite kind I give this place 3 stars because the food tasted like Mexican food from ocean shores, WA. It lacked seasoning. I've finally found true authentic Mexican cuisine in the state of WA and my heart is so happy! Added bonus, this restaurant is right down the street from our new home too which means will be surely be regulars in no time! From their ceviche to their huevos con chorizo, ever dish was packed with flavor and Mexican spices. There were so many good menu items that it was hard to decided what to order! Love the variety in the menu so my tastebuds can try something different each time. Service was friendly and prompt as well. Phenomenal! I ordered the California burrito and it's the best I've ever had. Steak was perfection. Salsa verde was amazing and it's massive. Ate the entire thing LOL. Husband was craving Mexican so we popped in. WOW! This place is excellent. We went around 11am on a Saturday and the service was prompt, kind, and diligent. We brought our baby and the staff were waving at him and checked in multiple times to see if we needed anything extra. Pricing is fair and the decor is very cute, our baby was enamored. This was the best Mexican food we've had in the Puyallup area and we will definitely be back. Not sure what region of Mexico this family is from, but it tastes more like the Mexican you get in LA and Las Vegas/Reno. This is the Mexican I love!! They have thee best refried beans and rice. The burrito is so good. All the meats are tender and flavorful. This is "real" Mexican to me. If you're from Nevada or LA, you already know the guacamole is top tier here. The carne Asada anything is bomb. No matter what you choose, it's so good. They don't skimp on the portions and the service is good too. Pro tip: eat inside. The dine in specials are so good. They save you some money and the food is still amazing. Not to mention, I'd love to have a big old margarita or something with tequila on the side of the ginormous burrito they have here. The enchiladas are a must. So good and the sauce they serve on it is so flavorful. Not oily or bland. Not expensive for no reason. Ambiance inside the restaurant is really good. Clean and tidy. We came here on a Saturday night around 5pm and were the only ones here but were greeted with friendly faces and tostadas when we sat down. By the time we left the place was filling up quickly. It's clean and cozy inside with great music playing as well as a few TVs so there was always something to see or hear while you ate. The food was seriously delicious! And the portions were great, we all went home with leftovers. The cucumber jalapeño Margarita was fresh and clean and they had lots of cocktails and beers, none on draft though. We tried the carne asada plate which had so much flavor, the carne asada is on the thin side but really flavorful and tender. The peppers mushrooms and onions were some of the best I've ever tasted, and the refried beans were on another level! The California burrito was enormous and packed with JoJos steak rice beans and I got it smothered in sauce which added great flavor. The food is actually really good but for one California burrito, one small birria taco, one muleta and two regular margaritas, our bill was $90! Add a tip and we spent almost $120! My Wife and I have been looking for a place that prepares Birria tacos for a WHILE now. We've only found a spot that serves it in Seattle. Not anymore do we have to take a journey there to enjoy one of our favorite dishes in the Mexican cuisine! Needless to say, my wife and I ordered the 3 Birria Taco dish, with no cheese. Taste was absolutely flawless, ingredients so fresh, every bite leaves you wanting more. Avacados are included as well for a healthy addition. The staff are so welcoming and kind, allowing you to sit where you wish, and they have 3 TV's in the dining room. Perfect ambience with music playing, and not too loud, just right! Food comes out nice and hot!! Pricing is - $$, and worth every penny! I recommend this restaurant for the wonderful experience they've provided each and every time we have decided to go out for Birria Tacos. We get their meat plate usually which has a little taste of grilled chicken, carne asada, shrimp, beans and all the fixings but we ventured put today and got the birria tacos, California burrito (wet) and the tamales. Nope. Idk what the premise of this place is but everything is off. First, whats with these prices, $5-6 for 1 taco? Get real. Their bar drink menu looks to have some depth but if you want something else, like iced tea or juice for your kid, limited options. You cant even get an iced tea without sugar. Its raspberry tea or sweet tea..... Fish and shrimp tacos without any kind of cream sauce available? Thats weird. Also, neither the shrimp nor the fish were good, just eh. 2 sauce options and both were mediocre and bland. Beans came out cold but also have their own unique, non-standard flavor profile, different from all other Mexican places. Its not like they took the standard flavor and made it better, they just made it taste different and it doesnt jive with Mexican food. Idk what they are trying to do in that kitchen, maybe they dont know either, but the place is unjustifiably expensive for the quality of food coming out. Service was mid also. She spoke English but had trouble understanding so I kept having to ask 2 and 3 times for things. Recommendation: just go anywhere else for a better experience. There are plenty around. read more
