Super late review. On 3/20/21, my daughter-Kaylah and I were feeling Thai food and we wanted to eat at Appethaizing, however, was closed for unseen circumstances. So we went next door to Playa Azul. The ambiance was alright and was slightly dark. Kaylah ordered 2 traditional crispy beef tacos with no veggies. She dislikes veggies LOL! I ordered the Beef enchiladas. We both thought they were just ok and not very flavorful sadly. The server was good and cordial. Food is delicious, portion size is fair. I've had takeout once and delivered once. My two enchilada dinner was tasty each time, hot and had leftovers. I'm looking forward to going in restaurant in-person. Meal came with chips and salsa. Asked for utensil and came with. Usually restaurants forget even if you ask. So they follow instructions! We went here recently on a whim, driving around trying to find a clean looking place to eat. We decided to try this one. I ordered 1 beef tamale and my husband had the chimichanga combination plate. The chips were fresh and the salsa was just spicy enough without being hot. The service was very attentive and friendly. They were accommodating and patient. The restaurant was older but clean and well cared for. Their prices were very reasonable. The food was insanely good. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. I haven't had a tamale like that in years. The beans were also delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant and I hope we will be back soon to try their carne asada burrito. read more

Be aware flies all over this restaurant. Should have known when seeing bugs everywhere this was not a good spot. Then the food came!!!! Absolutely horrendous! Chips and salsa were good. But very very disappointed, as I ordered the fajita burrito and they smothered it in enchilada sauce, which ruined the entire thing. I don't know what kind of fajitas they are eating that come with enchilada sauce, but it was not good. I would have ordered it without the disgusting sauce, but it was not in the meal description on the menu so I didn't know until it was served. Not authentic by any means. read more

I had a really tasty lunch today, met up with a dear friend who lives in Tacoma, and I'm in Lake Tapps area. She recommended this place because she has been there before and it was in the middle of where we live. Nice, clean , and friendly staff, I was seated with chips, salsa and a margarita while I waited for Elaine. Food was ordered and delivered quickly and the flavors were authentic and delicious. I will definitely be back, I'll bring family with me ( I stay with my Sisters family who have been here 35 years.) I am going to start by telling you you that one of the women here was one of the kindness servers I have ever experienced. She isn't the woman who sat us, or took our order. She was serving another table and started checking in on us. It was the kind of service that makes you want to come back. Now, I had issues with my meal. I think you should always get a healthy helping of rice and bean with a Mexican meal. It cost pennies and is a good way to make customers feel like they had a hearty meal. I can tell you that I left this place HUNGRY. The portions were so small, I truly thought I was served a children's plate. The beans could have been scooped up with a single chip and the rice was about two tablespoons full. The Chalupa, was more of a salad, than a traditional large taco. There was very little meat and too much lettuce. They also didn't include the usual sour cream or guacamole. From the beginning, I was disappointed. Two salsa were served. The red was average at best. It could have used some heat and some spice. But salt and pepper made it agreeable. The green was bitter. I love a good green salsa and real Hispanics, know how to make a tasty green, this was not tasty at all. For the first time in my adult life, I had to push the chips and salsa back. The salsa because the flavor was terrible and the chips because there was enough beans or meat on my plate to dip and scoop table scraps. This place boast 4.5 score for reviews, but it only has 26 reviews after 15 years of being in business. The reason this place isn't a household name is because they don't serve an honest meal. Portions should be healthier and they need to start shaking spices freely in the kitchen to give salsa the true south of the border reputation. This is a place with potential, but I doubt they will ever reach it serving salt free fare. read more

Hands down the best Carne Asada I've had. I ordered it medium and for once I found a place that doesn't lean towards the well done area! I also like that they give you both red salsa and Also a green salsa verde with your chips. I also would recommend the chicken taquitos which I ordered as an appetizer and it was enough to feed me and 2 other people alone. Basically I can't wait to go back so I can try more stiff on the menu 5 out of 5 stars for visit number 1. Super disappointed! We came here to celebrate my birthday. Mind you I've been there countless times in the last eight years. I always order the same thing, a meal and Shirley temple. The whole experience was average aside from a trip to the restroom which was flat out disgusting. Our check arrives and there is $12 worth of Shirley temples on our bill (I only got one refill). They have never charged me for refills and didn't bother to mention it when I ordered. Furthermore they seem to be trying to squeeze every dollar our of their customers as possible. They asked my man if he wanted jalapeños on his nachos and he said sure they charged him an extra dollar. The whole experience just kinda sucked. Worst mexican food i have eaten in pierce PIERCE COUNTY. We ordered the chicken carnita and mojo de ablo. the shrimp were way over cooked. i find it hard to beleive youbcan make a bland mojo de ajo but this place accomplished the food impossible. the chicken carnitas were an identical twin dry and flavorless. My girlfriend and I have always had good luck at this mexican joint, but no more. The enichiladas seemed like they were made of chicken, tortilla and about 2 cups of enchilada sauce. The hot sauce for the chips seemed like a really bad hot sauce from the store, chips seemed okay, not warm or salty though. This was the last time I'll eat here. the people who work here are nice and efficient, i will say this... however, i was there with 2 friends a few weeks ago and we each had a meal and a drink... we were *really* taking our time there talking and catching up, and we were there on a tues. night and it was not busy in the restaurant at all. the server came by when we were almost finished eating and asked if we were ready for the checks, and my friend said "no, we may get another drink but i am not sure..." and he said ok and walked away. 15 min. later he returns - no joke. "ready for the checks?" "not yet." we order another round. 10 minutes later, different server: ready for the checks? at this point, i am getting very, very annoyed. i said to my friends - it appears they don't want our business so let's head out. (and i want to add this important note - we are not loud people, we were not rude, we were not drunk - just 3 professional and courteous, quiet people having quiet conversation ...) i hope their management reads this and realizes that being so quick to "turn tables" when the place is not anywhere near busy (it was probably like 10-15% full of guests) is very off putting and makes customers feel unwanted. furthermore - i will say - we would have EASILY (*easily!*) dropped a lot of money there and tipped well that evening, on drinks alone. so this was a lot of lost revenue to this business since we chose to leave as we felt rushed out of there. :( also - the food here really is just mediocre. it was priced well, i will say, but nowhere near the great Mex. food I have had at many other restaurants. not even close... read more

Tasty and inexpensive!! ^-^ I went here with my 2 roomies for lunch one day. No wait and the hostess was very nice. One of my roommates has celiac disease and can die if they consume gluten. We told this to the waiter and he immediately showed great concern and wanted to make sure that the food they got was perfect and safe. Great food and excellent service. Only Bummer was that the horchata was $3, had lots of ice in it and was $1.25 for a refil. My meal was only $8, and $12 after tax and my beverage were added. Pretty good deal if you ask me. We used to eat here often years ago but have since turned to a couple other Mexican places we preferred. Thought we'd give this place a try again. Everything was exactly the same inside even years later, even had the kissing meter still, lol. I will say we do like their salsas and given you get both a red and green kind they are both mild. I always feel bad when there's just one kind and it's too spicy for hubby. But on the downside the chips are very average and had to ask for warm ones. I ordered a combo dinner, a chimichanga w/chili relleno both pretty good, rice good but beans tasted like canned. Hubby had charbroiled chicken breast that came with a chunky pico type salsa, sour cream, guacamole, and rice/beans and tortillas to make your own soft tacos. The chicken was obviously a slice off a breast because it was paper thin and dry looking but he said the flavor was good. He enjoyed it more than I would have thought because it looked pitiful to me. I had a margarita and it was good small and weak, ugh. Hubby had couple beers, couldn't believe no beer on tap. Our service was good. Our bill came to just under 50 bucks. Not worthy of the cost in my opinion. Doubt we'll return, nothing special. read more
