Definitely don't judge a book by the cover. We've been going here for 27 years, and the food is amazing. There is a new change in ownership, however it's the same staff with the excellent food they were known for. We did give it a break because it started going downhill in the last few years, however it's clear the change in ownership is going to be positive and the food quality and service was amazing like it was in 1999. We haven't been here for awhile due to their high prices but came back to try again. We were pleasantly surprised by all their specials. I had the Quesa Birria Tacos and my wife got Three Enchiladas combo with Mole, both of them were on the specials board and under $20 each. We could not believe how our meals were so delicious. Good Mexican food is hard to find in the Tacoma area, but this place is one of the most authentic I've experienced. It is a small Hispanic owned restaurant that provides excellent service and a great menu. The ambiance reminds me of eating in a small family restaurant in Mexico. I tried the prawns a la diabla which included rice and refried beans. I also tried the beef asada burrito. Both of these menu items were fantastic. The beef was tender and very tasty. The prawns were also large and tender. I liked the ability to watch the chef prepare my food for takeout. There is plenty of seating inside the restaurant and also a small private party room. If you are seeking good authentic Mexican food, this place is definitely worth the trip. read more

You know a Mexican spot is good when they have abuela in the corner making tortillas all day. Food is always amazing and I have been coming here for years, but it seems it's gotten pretty expensive. I went on a date and for 2 entrees and one margarita, it was over $70... Went to. Alley Liquidators up the street for some bargains now hungry! Stopped in here to have a Chile Rellieno Al la cart! Wanted authentic Mexican food and this place does not disappoint. Prices are higher than what we are used to but it's worth it. I had a tamale and a Chili Relleno. Both were excellent. The side rice and beans were very tasty too. My husband had the combination enchiladas which was also served with 3 pieces of super tender Carne asada. Was served with freshly made tortillas too. So soft and fresh. Lots of leftovers for a second meal. This is a must-try and have. read more

Ok lots of people told me I should eat here and I finally did, pretty good food here not high end but down to earth. My torta was tasty as hell. Just go! It's the real deal. No chips and salsa, like it should be. Order the tacos but don't get the normal chicken, steak, or pork. Live a little and try the other meats. You won't be disappointed! read more

It's ok, and I didn't really have anything more to write about for this review. Service was mediocre and they brushed us off a bit while we were in there. The meat for the carne was crunchy and crispy fried. So a 4 for the food. For the $7.99 special you get two tacos, beans, and rice on a huge platter. You will have food to take home. A friend of mine ordered a burrito the size of a baby at the cheap price of under $10. Filled with everything! We came for a kids date, and this place is excellent in catering to children. They have a lot of high chairs and booster seats. Meat and beans are prepared for children's palates as well. Highly reliable for moms or parents who want to take their kids out. Their tacos taste homemade, and I was in love with them! Parking is a tight squeeze, they offer street parking as well. read more

Run don't walk!I Idk what authentic supposed to taste like bcuz it's not my ethnicity or culture. What I do know is this does not taste like the commercial chains I'm used to. SO GOOD! My entire family has come to this spot for almost 30 years now. The service, food and kind people that work here have NEVER disappointed us! I love the arroz con pollo and the fresh grilled corn tortillas are amazing! My other favs are the fresh salsas they offer. You won't be disappointed!! PS. The reason they don't offer chips and salsa as an appetizer is their portions are HUGE! You won't have room to eat your meal and they know better than to waste food on some lame ass chips and salsa. Best rice and beans in all of Tacoma. Seriously so good. I had a made in-house tamale and recommend the fish tacos! The burritos are big-bigger than taco trucks. The reason why I gave this restaurant 1* is because their price for the fish is different The menu says $17.95 the server told us that it is $19.95 ok we said its fine. When we got the bill it is $21.95 plus they charge convenience fee of 1.82. They need to change their menu to show the current price. read more

I`m a long time customer because their food is very good. We have been going there for many years since the polish gentleman owned it. However, there seems to be a problem with not returning change when a customer pays with cash. It`s happened to us on several occasions with different waitresses. I`m pretty sure the owner is aware of it. I think with the high prices of food there they should a least let you walkout with some change in your pocket instead of lent. Please beware read more

Wow, interesting little whole in the wall. Authentic and yummy. Hubby had the combo fajitas. He was impressed because there was so many shrimp. Very happy. I had the steak fajita burrito. This place is consistently outstanding! I admittedly get just one thing - the carnitas; but it is so good that why would need anything else. They are known for their tamales, which others that have dined with me swear by. I learned of this place many years ago from a Mexican woman living in San Luis Obispo who claimed it was the best that she ever had (including in California). About one year ago the owner/founder passed away. I have seen no diminishment in the quality. The "new" owner has apparently worked here for more than 20 years. read more

My wife and I have been going there for many years but haven't been here for awhile so we thought we would try it again, what a mistake. I ordered the carne asada combination like I always do. The meat was very bland like there was no seasoning. It wasn't cooked in any type of sauce or chili sauce. Like they just cooked the meat without marinating it first. For $23.95 it was a wast of money . My wife ordered the torta and the meat in that was very bland. We ordered French fries and they had old and fresh cooked fries together, half were burnt, I told the server and she just said oh sorry and walked away. Needless to say we won't be going back. Sorry to see this place go down hill. We won't be going back. Over priced and terrible food. read more

I really don't like leaving bad reviews, but I feel like I need to. This has been one of our favorite places to get good, authentic, Mexican food for so many years. Their food has always been great - great taste, big portions, and reasonably priced. We ate here last night after not having come in for about 6 months or so. It was the worst experience we have ever had here. We called in an order to pick up. When we arrived to pick up the food, I learned when paying that the prices had increased significantly ($5 a plate since the last time we were in). Ok, that's a big price increase, especially when it's just enchiladas and rice/beans. But we figure, we don't eat here often anymore, so not a big deal for good Mexican food. Well, we got home and did not have high quality, good Mexican food. The enchiladas were dry and had almost no sauce on them. The seasoning was bland and the chicken in the enchiladas were dry. The food was cold. My husband and mole enchilada and no sauce on them. His chicken inside the enchiladas was dry and bland. The carne asada we had with the meal was good. That's about it. The rice and beans were edible, but not very flavorful. We got a tamale, because we love them and always get one. The tamale last night was terrible. I took a bite and spit it out. It tasted old and just not good at all. We were so disappointed in this visit. We're have never had bad food here. The decline in the food quality along with the huge price increase was shocking to us. It makes it hard to want to go back again. read more

Love the dark aesthetic and chill vibes. Everyone was friendly and food was excellent. My favorite dishes are the rib eye tacos and birria beef tacos. Rib eye steak was tender and had a hint of that char grill flavor. The birria tacos and consomé was also really flavorful. We enjoyed the tequila flaming fajita and the mini flame show as well lol. The chicken and shrimps were good but similar to my experience at the South Center location, the beef was really chewy (like over cooked). I also think they served way more veggies compared to meat proportions for their fajitas. My Dad got the burrito especial with grilled chicken and it was huge! He thought it was alright and got sick of it pretty quick because of how much rice and beans there were. We also ordered the margarita flights which were served in these cute mini glasses. I thought the pineapple coconut had the strongest alcohol taste whereas the passion fruit-guava and pina azul tasted like juice (I'm not a big drinker so I thought it was perfect). The pina azul tasted similar to a flat Baja Blast from Taco Bell with a hint of alcohol. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here. The only negative thing is we made a reservation at 8:00PM and came early at 7:30PM; at check in, they said at first we could get in sooner since we arrived but then quickly was told to actually wait until our reservation time (and that's totally fine and makes sense since we reserved for 8PM!!). I was just confused because the group that were walk-ins waiting got to go in before us. There wasn't anyone else waiting for a table and by the time they sat us, turns out there was plenty of open tables available... I just thought they'd want people to be seated sooner if they've arrived and had tables available since it was already 8PM and they close at 9PM lol.

We ordered the combination dinner, I got mine with the tamale and tostada with chicken while my boyfriend got the chimichanga. We got another refill of chips which were not too salty and the perfect size to get a good chunk of salsa. We eventually had two waiters who was a young gentleman and an older gentleman but they were both so courteous and friendly. This was also probably the fastest we've gotten our food at a Mexican restaurant as it arrived maybe 8-10 minutes after we placed our order. The plates arrived nice and hot with the food portions being huge and the presentation was lovely! I wasn't a huge fan of the chicken as it felt more on the dry side for me but I also just don't like white meat and my boyfriend said it wasn't dry at all. I did love the amount of toppings on the tostada as it was stacked high with fresh ingredients on a bed of refried beans which was seasoned perfectly. The tamale was also absolutely delicious and I have had many tamales and I can say this tamale is immaculate. My boyfriend's chimichanga was delicious too from the bite I had and how he cleaned his plate. I can vouch that this place is authentic (dated a Mexican guy and their family spoiled me with amazing food and parties) and my boyfriend agrees that this spot is the perfect place for amazing Mexican food for those who are wanting to try or are hesitant. The staff here are super friendly and professional, they will even pack up your food! It just felt like going to a friend's to enjoy amazing vibes, fantastic food, and a overall good time.
