Needs a complex move with two pianos. David was awesome, prompt service, super careful with pianos. Wouldn't use anyone else.

TX Pianos - Trying to get a profile picture from a selfie :P
Also, this instrument now sounds absolutely wonderful!

TX Pianos

I checked with several services before I made the decision to use TX Pianos to tune and repair my…read more40 year old Grand Piano. Most places didn't respond to my request for an estimate and the couple that did wanted me to sign a contract to have the piano tuned every year or pay them a $75 traveling fee to drive from south Austin to Cedar Park. Then I turned to "Thumbtack" to find a piano tuner. Derek was the first to respond. He owns and operates TX PIANOS, and he responded personally. Gave me a reasonable quote on line to tune the piano (which had not been tuned for 5 or 6 years) and replace a broken string. When I asked about travel pay, he said that if he had 2 or more appointments in the same town he did not charge travel pay. It just so happened he had another tuning appointment scheduled a couple of days later in Cedar Park, so he waived the travel pay. He sent me a text to remind me of the appointment. He sent another text with a location tracker to show me where he was when he was on the way to my house. Derek is very personable and easy to work with. Even my big ole' furry Australian Shepherd, who barks at everyone who tries to enter our house, took up with Derek and walked right up to him, allowed a couple of pets, and never barked at him once during the visit. Derek described what he would need to do and completed the job of tuning and replacing the two broken strings in just a little over an hour. The piano sounded great when he finished and it was more "out of tune" than I thought. Due to the age of the piano and the mallets, we talked about performing a voicing to bring back the rich soft timbre the piano had when it was new, 40 years ago. Again, I received a very reasonable price for the service whenever I decide to have it done. He also put me on a "check-in" schedule for every 6 months to see if I have any other needs throughout the year. It was a pleasure talking with Derek about the piano and we even joked around about our playing techniques - or lack thereof! But most of all, he was reliable and honest and an expert at getting my old grand back in tune. I will not be looking for a piano technician again now that I have met Derek. If you need piano repair or just a tuning, you will not be disappointed with TX PIANO.

Since ours was brand new and only had one service before, he gave some good recommendations for when it needed tuning again and on how to care for the piano. Honest and no pressure. I would highly recommend him. Best of all as a bonus, he loves dogs and got along with both of ours.

Charles Ball Piano Tuning and Service - Preparing Steinway concert grand for Cliburn Concerts at Bass Hall Fort Worth January, 2020

Charles has been maintaining our family's three pianos for close to ten years now. We won't let…read moreany other piano technician touch them. He made my wife's baby-grand Schimmel sound like a Steinway. We have two Steinway Bs in small rooms, and Charles was able to voice them so that they don't over-resonate. And speaking of voicing, Charles's excellent care ensures that all octaves of each piano are the same brightness. No dead or overly bright octaves can be heard. Charles has also given us valuable feedback on our children's practicing habits. By observing the wear of the hammers of one piano, he was able to tell us that our oldest child's practicing style was overly percussive. He worried that she might be heading for a repetitive stress injury; our daughter's complaints about pain in her forearms confirmed Charles's suspicion. His timely feedback encouraged us to make an adjustment in our daughter's learning style, and the problem moderated significantly. Gratefully, we consider Charles a good friend too. When we invite him over, he asks about our children's school and music activities. He even listens to my stories. I can only think of one downside to Charles: he's in demand. That means if you need him today or tomorrow, he probably won't be available. But if you can wait for his schedule to clear, he will make your piano sing. If you can't wait, invite him come in later to correct the inferior work your last piano tech did.

Honestly sad to write a negative review as I go out of my way to support small businesses, and…read moreespecially women owned, but Nicole really dropped the ball. There was a surcharge for her to travel from San Antonio to Austin, which I was willing to pay to give her my business. The piano tuning itself was fine, but I had 3 broken strings that she took to be replaced. The kicker is that it she took the strings in September and it was mid-February that she finally scheduled to install the strings. I was always the one to try to make contact. She was a no-show for that appointment and then just ghosted me. I repeatedly reached out several times a week via text and phone calls, with no response and finally recommending that she just mail me my strings. Excuses were finally made and it was late March when I was told the truth of the situation. According to Nicole, the strings were lost between the supplier and her home. So why had she scheduled that February appointment? Why did she agree to mail the strings? She offered nothing to compensate me for my lost strings and complained that she was out the money to the supplier. Meanwhile I have to hire someone else to replace those strings at undoubtedly a greater cost to me. Overall, it was an extremely frustrating situation and unprofessionally handled on her part.

UPDATE: someone from Alamo Strings reached out to me to say the contracts are stored digitally and…read morethe originals are destroyed. Also that I can exit the contract with no penalty. I do believe at the store I was told the paper was securely kept at a different location and wasn't digital storage. I believe the person who contacted me about the digital storage is correct but that definitely wasn't fully explained. Also why can't I do it online if that is the case? I gave two additional stars on their review because of the quick outreach but still don't like giving my Social Security Number on top of all the other info. And have no idea why a third relative is necessary. Also if this was better explained at the point of sale it would have eased a lot of my frustration. ORIGINAL REVIEW This place is awful. We were sent there by my child's elementary school. It was the only choice we were given which makes it so much worse. They have very poor business practices. They require a social security number which they keep written down which is very poor security practice. Also they require spouses name address phone and an additional relative's name, address and phone. I understand checking my drivers license and keeping information including credit card on file but all of this is unreasonable. Further it definitely should not be kept on a single piece of paper. Further we are renting because my daughter has never played violin and she may hate it. But they require a 32 month contract! This is for fifth grade, yet the contract goes through the end of seventh grade. That is also not reasonable. The staff were also rude. When I complained and questioned these things I was told I could purchase the instrument out right if I didn't like it. Again this was the only option given to us by the school. The owner appeared on the parents meeting zoom call. If he is going to work directly with the school he should have better business practices.
