I recently enjoyed a viewing of "Blazing Saddles" during an Eat See Hear event at The Autry Museum when I had my first eating encounter with Piaggio Gaucho On Wheels Food Truck. Since I frequently attended, worked, or volunteered at the myriad of year-around events throughout Southern California, I was familiar with this food truck but opted for others that caught my attention which I hadn't tried before. Luckily, this truck's number was up, and I was down to try some Argentinean food. Would I be crying for Argentina after this experience!? QUICK BIO "The original Orange County Argentine food truck since November 2009, Piaggio's Chimichurri Truck has been serving empanadas, skirt steak tacos, chimichurri, sausage, and milanesa sandwiches, skirt steak and chimi fries, and dulce de leche to the public. The meat was good but definitely needed more of it spread around evenly and better shopped as you ended-up eating big chunks of it at a time unless you shredded it yourself. It certainly could've used more chimichurri as well as the dijonnaise/chipotle sauce as there was far too much exposed fries that had nothing on them, so I squirted Sriracha sauces all over. However, I needed more of the specialty ingredients (i.e. asada, chimichurri, dijonnaise/choptle sauce) on my fries instead of them acting as if they were an accent or garnish. In addition, the prices were just a tad high (if they were rolled back $1.00-$2.00, that would be better for what you got). When I actually decide to participate in the food truck that comes to my work on a weekly basis, it has to be a really promising one. This one, was. I looked at the menu probably 5 times before I finally decided I was going to get the Chicken Milanesa Sandwich, and Chimichurri Fries. I was able to add the fries on to my sandwich for $2 more. Score! Against my better health judgement, I also ordered the Churros with Dulce de Leche. Because, when you are eating off a food truck, you have to be the fattest version of yourself possible, right? LOL Anyway, as soon as I walked out of the building to go to the truck, I smelled it. I literally would have drooled on the sidewalk if it wasnt so hot, it dried before hitting the ground. Eating the sandwich, was a little messy. I ordered it without tomatoes (I think)... I dont like tomatoes on hot food. The chicken was SO fresh - you could tell it wasnt frozen. If it was, they masked it really well, haha. The fries were really good, as well! When I finally made it to the churros, way too full to eat them, I bit into one and literally tasted heaven. I selfishly ate two of them... and half afraid of going into a diabetic coma, half afraid of making myself sick from eating too much, I shared the other two with coworkers. My only complaint about any of my meal, was the chimichurri. Its not what I was used to. I am used to it being chopped up finer, more garlic, etc. It was ok, but not my favorite. I tried this food truck for the first time this evening as it was at my apartment complex, and I'm quite impressed! I ordered a steak burrito, which was quite large and only $9. It was advertised as $9 and that's exactly what I paid. Better yet, this is the first food truck I've seen in a while that doesn't prompt you to tip on a tablet, which is always a bit pressuring and awkward. My burrito had a great grilled flavor to it and seemed to include healthy, tasty ingredients. It could have used a bit more meat, but perhaps next time I should try the Tres Amigos Burrito, which probably does. I hope to get the opportunity to try this place again sometime! read more

Today I was feeling like fish and voila, I was at the Great Park and Piaggio's had steamed tilapia en papillote served with rice and portabello. The fish was light and everything tasted very good. It was exactly what I was feeling like today and it hit the spot. The fish was moist, a squeeze of lime juice in the pocket added a nice touch to the already tasty sauce which had collected on the bottom of the pouch, Ingenious actually! Thursday night is food truck night @CHS and having seen the lineup in advance, I was excited to try Piaggio and their Argentinian menu. We ordered the skirt steak tacos gauchos (their specialty) and the Argentine sausage sandwich with chimichurri fries. The skirt steak was tough and when I took my first bite, I had to wrestle with the strips of meat so I wouldn't end up swallowing everything all at once. I wish my tacos came with a side of chimichurri instead of plain boring salsa because it was really good. D had the sausage sandwich which he said was just okay (he preferred Berlin Brats). I had a bite and Sprout's freshly made sausages tasted better. I was surprised that the side of chimichurri fries did not come with any chimichurri(?!). This was my least favorite food truck of the day. I was really looking forward to it since BF eats lunch here all the time and raves about how great it is. I got a skirt steak taco, churros, and a coconut milk. The taco was way too oily and the meat just didn't have a good flavor to it. I tried the churros, honestly i'm not a sweets person, so they were just okay to me. My niece thought they were alright. The fresh coconut milk was awesome - that was the only thing that I liked, and what bumps this review from 1 to 3 stars. BF said their other food is much better. There were some mighty fine aromas coming from this food truck, so decided to give it a shot. They have a best sellers list, so grabbed the pulled pork sliders along with a side of chimichurri fries. It comes with 2 sliders on those tiny King's Hawaiian buns that immediately soak up the pork juice and become a soggy mess. Generous amount of pork, pretty tender, but not too flavorful. Piaggio is still one of the veteran food trucks whose owner still works on the food truck. You can find owner Coli or wife Rosane working either the lunch or dinner shift. I remember the first day they rolled out in downtown Fullerton. I believe that was three or four years ago, and they are still very strong in the Orange County, and now, Los Angeles community. I do notice that the quality of the food is much better when the owners are on the truck. The love is definitely there, as well as the great customer service. My favorites items are the pulled pork sliders and their Argentine skirt steak over the chimichurri fries. The empanadas are still one of the best deals in town, 2 chicken or caprese empanadas for $6. The menu has changed over the years, and some of the food prices have gone up a little. Unfortunately with gas and food prices going up, food truck owners must adjust. They do have vegetarian friendly menus, and will accommodate most dietary needs. Anticipating your lunch hour, mouth salivating towards images of cheesy, buttery, tasty portobello mushrooms sandwiched between two tortillas (I'm referring to one of Piaggio's specialties - the portobello mushroom quesadilla). There is just the right amount of cheese, generous cuts of juicy portobello mushroom, and a mix of spices and other sauce to make this item a delicious treat. When the PMQ isn't available, I usually opt for the Skirt Steak Taco Meal (w/ rice and zucchini) - two good portioned tacos with all the fixins, the steak is flavorful and tender enough - and coupled with a good serving of rice and zucchini. Piaggio isn't quite the Empanada Man in Lake Forest but hey, the empanadas I got to try for $2 each at OC DinDinAGoGo were not bad. I got the chicken and caprese. I was confused for a few seconds wondering how they would get a caprese salad into an empanada and how that would taste but I've been feeling adventurous lately and I think that's a good thing. My blind trust vs my good judgment has served me better. I wonder what that says about me and before I get carried away on some rant about myself let's move on shall we? I didn't care too much for the green sauce however the dough was light, flaky, and crispy and the filling was well cooked, flavorful, spicy and tasted pretty good. Pulled pork sliders My first bite of the sliders was okay, but with every bite, I was more and more impressed. Fresh pulled pork and tasty sauce... admittedly, not one of the best pulled pork items I've ever had, but it definitely does the job! Chimichurri fries Nothing too out of the ordinary either, but still very, very good. Churros con dulce de leche Great crunch, but if you get a piece that doesn't have a lot of dulce de leche (caramel), it definitely is not mind-blowing. Food: Churros con dulce de leche 4.5 (but 5 if you asked my husband) the Carmel sauce was so yummy but no sugar in the actual churro. Friend Chicken over fries: 4 the chicken was pretty good. It needed a sauce but the ones they had didn't pair well IMO. Asade Fries: 4.5 the sauce in those was really good! The fries were a nice size and paired perfectly. My foodie friend fo life kent d. recently yelped about happy eats from Piaggio so when I was out in the OC and they were there I had to give them a try. They specialize in Argentinean eats so chimichurri with everything please! Kent said the Empanadas were a must so I ordered two Chicken for $2 each (Caprese was the other option). The super sweet man working the truck (whom I later found out as we were talking was Piaggio himself) recommended the Sausage Sandwich to me. I was hungry and wanted to try one other thing so sure why not! Oh and we had to throw in an order of the Churros con Dulce de Leche to finish off the meal. Piaggio was so sweet to let me pay for the Churros up front but let me come back to tell them when I was ready for them. Empanadas were slightly on the smaller side (i'm spoiled bc i have had the Che truck) and were $2 each. Even though they were small, the flaky shell was filled full with saucy chicken and crisp veggies. Dipped in the chimi I really enjoyed my Empanada. Isa did not care for the empanada much so I happily ate hers. But hers was way different from mine. It had more veggies than mine had and barely any chicken. It was good but I liked my first one better. The Sausage Sandwich ($5) was simple yet tasty. It was served on a great soft bread. The flavorful sausage was sliced perfectly so it didn't slide out of the bread when you took a bite. That really impressed me. Chicken Empanada ($2) - The crust was crisp, flaky and delicious. Surprisingly, the chicken filling was moist and full of flavor, too! Very tasty! Many reception venues force you to use caterers from their "referred" (in English: Required) list. We would not even consider them. If there was one thing we wanted our guests to remember, it would be the great food and good times they had. Although I only had one bite of an empanada at the recent DinDin-a-GoGo (funky name, I like it... copying House Hash a...?) food truck gathering at K1 Speed in Irvine, it was a delicious bite. I could tell it was fresh, nice and crispy exterior crush without being oily or greasy at all. The inside filling was pipin' hot and nicely seasoned. The kicker for me, however, had to their chimichurri sauce. It had a little spice in the background, and if I had to compare with other food trucks that also have chimichurri sauce (like Barcelona on the Go), Piaggio takes the cake. I ordered pulled pork sliders (they come 2 to an order), a chicken empanada and a caprese empanada. The sliders were superbly delicious. Tender, flavorful pork with chimichurri on a Hawaiian bread bun. The empanadas were both really tasty too. Between the two I liked the caprese one more (tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil). I've been dying to check out Piaggio since the food truck trend blew up a few years ago so I was excited to see them at the Executive Park of Irvine. Maybe my expectations were too high or I'm just too harsh of a critic but I wasn't blown away. That isn't to say that there weren't any redeeming qualities, just not enough to state that I was a fan. The chicken and caprese empandas were pretty good! They were fresh, hot, and the exterior had a perfectly crispy outer shell. The basil and mozzarella combination was a pleasant surprise from the standard protein or veggie options. My only gripe was that the ingredients were sparse. My pretty puff pastry was pretty hollow but the chimichurri that accompanied the dish was delicious. The grilled tilapia and skirt steak tacos were also pretty good. The seasoned white fish was flakey, moist, and plentiful. The steak had a fantastic marinade and was also plentiful. We ordered the following - Chicken / Caprese Empanadas - Very interesting, and different from the Filipino empanadas I've had. They come out nice and hot, and the exterior is crispy and puffy with a sweet and savory chicken filling. Although it was my favorite item, I felt like it was mostly air inside. Who knew that I would meet a stranger who would not only give me a hot dog for my hot dog list; but a Food Truck Hot dog as well? Not me And who knew it would be this good? well, actually that's what I expected. I had a 5 star burrito from Piaggio a few months ago, and the on;y reason I haven't been back is I live North of the Orange County line, and they are on the side closer to Argentina, but when someone offers me a free hot dog from a 5 star truck, I am basically just a guy who can't say no. Now these are smaller dogs, about what you would expect at 2 for 5 dollars, but they are all beef, wrapped in crisp bacon and topped with pink sauce and chimichurri rather than the mundane (by comparison) LA street dog condiments. Hmmm....tough one to review just because I was a little disappointed. With all the asian/taco craze I was excited to see Piaggio's come about with a bold Argentinian menu! I caught up with this truck during one of the Santa Ana Art Nights and I tried the empanadas. I thought it was just okay. It wasn't great but then again it wasn't bad...so it just left me a little disappointed. I was lucky enough to try this truck at the OC Fair on the first food truck Thursday and there were hardly any lines for the trucks so it was great. I asked the cook what he recommended and he suggested the Porker sandwich. My bf got 2 pulled pork tacos. Both of these were great. I was a little hesitant with the porker b/c I'm not a huge pork fan if it's not carnitas or pulled pork but this was suprisingly delicious and not dry at all. It came on a french roll w/blue cheese, roasted red pepper, and chimichurri sauce. I loved the combination of all the flavors and they worked so well together, the sandwhich was beautiful too just a bit messy. There was a lot of oil all over the bread from the chimichurri I believe and then the big slices of pepper were sliding all over the place but I didn't really care, I was hungry and just wanted it in my mouth! This was a huge sandwich too, enough to share. The pulled pork tacos were great too, nice change to have chimichurri on top instead of the usual taco toppings. I'm VERY pleased that I came back for round 2 with Piaggio! This time I had the opportunity to try the signature Argentine empanadas that I had heard so many good things about. Since all varieties were available, I went ahead and asked for one of each. I tasted chicken, caprese (fresh muzzarella, basil and tomatoes), and beef. I must say, regardless of the filling (all of which were amazing), it was the hot, crisp, flaky pastry crust that blew me away. It was light and airy, yet had a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth goodness to it! You can't go wrong with whichever one you chose, but I'd recommend the caprese (think bruschetta plus cheese). So good! I added a side of chimichurri fries to round out this feast of deliciousness. Wow! They were very crisp, tasty, and the incorporation of chimichurri made them zesty. Definitely not your average fries. My only regret is that I didn't snag a bite of my buddy's Blue Cheese Angus Beef Burger. Oh well.. All the more reason to come back! read more

I've been meaning to check out this truck, so when I heard that it would be at the Irvine Chamber of Commerce event I hiked my ace over there. Long after the Lime Truck and Louks had closed up shop for running out of food, Piaggio was still going strong. I appreciated that they anticipated enough food for the allotted time that they'd be there (11-2pm on a weekday), and the line moved relatively quickly. However, by the time I got to the window the one thing I heard so much about - their empanadas - had been sold out. I asked what else was popular and the lady directed me to their pulled pork sliders and the tres amigos burrito. Pulled Pork Sliders ($5) - they give you two and it comes in what looks to be a King's Hawaiian bun with chimichurri and pink sauce. I enjoyed the flavors a lot (whatever sauces you're using, keep 'em coming), BUT the pulled pork was like chewing dry straw. Tres Amigos Burrito ($7) - This burrito combines three different types of protein - Puerco (slow-roasted pork), Skirt Steak, and Camarao (garlic/lime shrimp) with some rice, black beans, and avocado - and they roll it up in a large tortilla. This is a very satisfying and filling meal. I was surprised at the huge chunks of shrimp I was getting with each bite. I really liked the hints of heat I got from this dish too. I heard this is a new addition to their menu, and I say it's a keeper. I'd like to come back and give them another chance because I see so much potential here! read more

"All you Asians look the same!" Yeah, after a while going from food truck to food truck burritos and tacos pretty much start looking and tasting the same. I thought their burrito filled you up but that's about it. I think they put too much sour cream in it so you can't really taste anything else. I'm happy to report that Piaggio is headed down the right path again. After trying them again at the recent OC DinDin-A-GoGo in Irvine, I think their food is as good, if not a tad better executed, than the first time I tried them. The Chicken Empanada was served piping hot and fresh from the fryer. And while I think the filling could have used a little bit more seasoning, the accompanying chimichurri sauce more than made up for it. The Tofu Burrito was also served very hot -- so hot that we had to let it sit for a few minutes to cool down -- and was full of flavor. Even the tofu was well prepared! I only wish the salsa had just a bit more heat to it, but overall, the food at Piaggio helped to make up for the really mediocre offerings by some of the other trucks. 3 1/2 stars read more

Got a chance to FINALLY catch this truck and I'm glad I did. Their Chicken Empanadas are out of this world! They're made to order and come out piping hot. The exterior is a lot like a crispy/puffy chinese wonton skin and the inside is stuffed with a sweet and savory chicken veggie goodness that I couldn't get enough of. To top it off with, they threw in a side of chimichurri sauce that was delicious. Alongside my empanadas, I got a side of Chimichurri Fries which were just ok (I'll probably pass on ordering these next time. I'm usually fry obsessed but these were a lot greasier than your average fry) and the Churros con Dulce de Leche which in my opinion are also a MUST GET...the churros were perfect--freshly fried with that nice crispy exterior but oh-so-soft center and covered in lots of for dulce de leche sauce. Last night I had the opportunity to try out this Argentine gourmet meals on wheels. I was at the Santiago Artist District art walk in Santa Ana for the closing show of the "Better in Threes" @ the Art from the Hive Gallery. I and the others were starved so a group of us walked over to Poinsettia Street where this truck set up camp. I like this truck because it's not the run of the mill taco roach truck. They have CHIMICHURRI sauce and offer stuff like Caprese Empanadas, Argentine Sausage Sandwiches, Chicken Empanadas, Tofu tacos, ETC ETC.. Oh Skirt Steak Tacos! My friend pointed out the "Bacon Dog" and I ordered it. The result was not what I was expecting. You know the kind of "Chicano Dogs" that you can get when leaving the Red Lion Tavern or anywhere in LA for that matter. I gave the "Bacon Dog" away and had some of the "Caprese Emanda" and a little of the Skirt Steak Taco. The Chimichurri sauce is to die for. It is so amazing that they even bottled it up and it is available to buy right there at the truck! So worth it! Now only bummer other than the "bacon wrapped dog" was that it took some time to get our food! Gourmet indeed! Also... Let me elaborate on the bacon dog. .. The bacon was not cooked all the way. I was fortunate enough to have this truck come on by during this random truck gathering and I went with their Argentine sausage sandwich. If you like some spice to your sandwich then go with this one. But it wasn't super hot or anything. The chimichurri sauce they added was not enough as the sausage was still dry so I had to ask for another side sample. My mouth was getting dry. But with that extra chimichurri sauce, that definitely fixed the problem. I guess it also had something to do with the French bread.
