I can genuinely and wholeheartedly say that the owners, physical therapists, PTAs, billing team,…read morefront desk staff -- heck, even the volunteers -- at Jaco Rehab truly have the patient's best interest at heart. Every single person there is supportive, compassionate, and deeply committed to helping people heal. This is a demanding profession, and you can feel that they chose it because they truly care. Every workplace likes to call themselves a "family," but the team at Jaco Rehab really is an Ohana. They work together like a well-oiled machine, and the result is patients who not only get back on their feet, but leave empowered -- armed with the knowledge and education to care for themselves long after discharge. Their saying is "movement is medicine," and they absolutely embody it.

If you're going to Jaco, here are two questions you should ask before you start:…read more 1. "Will I have the same personal trainer each session?" That's a reasonable expectation. A consistent PT can track your progress, understand your limitations, and adjust your program the way true one-on-one training should. 2. When they ask, "Have you been doing your exercises?" Respond with: "Did you review my data and history before this session?" My experience was being passed between multiple trainers. Without getting into the weeds, no one consistently reviewed my charts before sessions. That matters. Without context, it's impossible to ask the right questions or receive targeted guidance. Each session, I was measured and data was recorded--but no one explained what it meant. I was never told how I was progressing, especially regarding range of motion or outcomes. Jaco uses a high-tech system that allows them to charge a $50 cancellation fee within 24 hours, yet trainers weren't consistently inputting or reviewing data to deliver informed sessions. At one point, the lead PT had to step in mid-session to guide the trainer I was working with on what I should actually be doing. After two months of this, I canceled my sessions and am now looking for another PT provider.

OrthoSport in Niu Valley…read morewas one of the few options on the island; although it was a bit of commute, it's turned out to be a great choice. A customer's experience with such personalized service usually banks on their relationship with their therapist. In this case, we are fortunate to be aligned with Summer. She's a pro - patient, clear in her exercise instructions, encouraging (yet firm), and flexible with some of our last minute scheduling issues (Niu Valley is quite a commute from Moanalua). The facility is right behind Jack in the Box on Kalanianaole Hwy; the light at the left turning lane can try your patience. Parking during lunch hour can be a little challenging; fortunately it is very large parking lot shared by other businesses. They do a nice job with scheduling/changing your appointments, and the email reminders really do help (as does the $50 penalty if you cancel in less than 24 hours). All in all, the experience of going through this form of PT along with the physical exertion without impact to your joints is definitely worthwhile!

I WOULD NOT USE ORTHO SPORT-HERE IS WHY…read more For everyone of my visits Kevin arrived 3 to 4 minutes late. Almost every visit was ended at least 5 minutes before the hour. About 20% of the session Kevin was writing notes about what just happened. Every 10th session was almost entirely spent recording measurements and strength of where I was at. I was told by Kevin that Medicare required this. I spoke to Medicare and was told that they do not require reports. I am approaching the 4th month of my recovery. This is the time when my strengthening is most important as I am limping from muscle weakness. Kevin has told me he is cutting my sessions from 2 to 1 session per week. I asked why and he told me that Medicare will not be approving 2 sessions. I asked Medicare about this. They referred me to page 48 of the Medicare Handbook which says if the Doctor prescribes 2 visits per week that is what will happen. Medicare does not challenge what a Doctor thinks is necessary. Attached are photos from the current Medicare Handbook that contradict what I was told by Ortho Sport. Even with this Ortho Sport still stands by their contradictory statements. I have found a different physical therapy provider who does NOT makeup rules. I also realize by what I have written above that my 1 hour session was "at best about 30 minutes of physical therapy". Many Physical Therapists offer websites or apps that show you videos of the suggested exercises to do. They also offer other options to help with your recovery. Ortho Sport merely prints out a sheet of paper. It is very hard to believe that Ortho Sport has 241 reviews and everyone is 5 stars. That is not likely considering life is not perfect. Please consider what I have written in making your decision. I have given the honest facts of my experience. Ortho Sport has stood by what Medicare said is not true even though it is in writing and told to me explicitly when I spoke with them.

Dr. Dean Yoshimoto is AMAZING!!!…read more My mom has been suffering from extreme knee pain for some time now, and even seeing a sports medicine doctor and physical therapists back at home in Chicago, nothing was working - the pain was still there, if not more so, and there was never a clear answer or a treatment plan that was offered by any of the specialists. Here comes Dr. Yoshimoto, who literally decreased my mom's knee pain by 90% after 1 visit. Yes, you heard that right - 90%!!! He was extremely patient, kind, and really broke it down in terms of pinpointing what exactly was going on, what treatment was needed, and what exercises to do at home. He was so shocked and was left speechless that my mom was dealing with inept individuals all this time - clowns, I tell you! Unbelievable. You can tell that Dr. Yoshimoto genuinely cares for each of his patients. He's not the typical physical therapist who gives you some stretches to do, hooks you up to a muscle stimulating machine, and/or gives you a head pad and calls it a day. He actually tries to target the source of pain! I am so grateful that I was able to find him for my mom, and I was actually kind of serious when I told her that maybe she should consider moving to HI permanently, just for him. I've worked with Allison for the past few months and can't recommend their office enough for any men dealing with pelvic pain. Prior to my first visit I was dealing with severe nerve pain shooting through my groin into my abdomen and down my legs making everything from sitting to walking across a room feel like being stabbed constantly. Each session has been incredible with both helping to identify the root of the problem and education on what I can do to help progress the treatment in between appointments. I've recovered enough to get back to regular walks and routine trips with minimal pain and continue to address even the tiniest flare ups with Allison's help. I can't recommend them enough for anyone experiencing something similar. As an added bonus, the staff that help at the front for scheduling are super friendly and helpful in working around what works best for each individual. Thanks for all you do!
