I don't know if it's confirmation bias or personal preference, but Phulkari Punjabi hits every mark for me. Every dish I order is exactly the flavor profile, the spice level, the everything I want it to be. I've eaten a lot of Indian food, but this place never misses. Favorites are the Cholay, Palak Paneer, Butter Chicken, Chicken 65, Pakoras, Chili cheese naan, and the veggie samosas, but I have never had anything less than tasty. Put the green chili chutney on everything. Only complaint is they used to have dessert options of gulab jamun or kheer, and I don't think they offer the kheer since dine-in cratered during Covid. Got the Thali menu and the chicken 65. My kids love the chicken here. Most places have a yogurt based chili sauce on the 65 but they keep theirs dry. The Thali menu changes daily. Choose between meat or vegetarian. You get 3 dish samples, raita, roti, and desert. My only issue with this place are the hours. If you do, you might want to order some samosas as well,, these are little potato and veggie patties that are a popular street food in india. Also, don't forget the garlic naan. Because my Indian meal is never complete with garlic naan. After you've devoured all that good stuff and it's time for shoot the breeze session. Order you and your friends some Mango Lassi for the win. Yes sir, the proper way to eat Indian food is with your hands. When I walked in on a Thursday evening around 5pm, there was no one in the restaurant but I was promptly greeted by a very friendly server. I was asking about the desserts and differences between them and she happily obliged me. If you're looking for variety, the thalis are a great way to try 3 different entrees for a reasonable price. Thali which literally means plate is an assortment of dishes paired with rice, your choice of bread, and dessert. Their thali also comes with a little side salad, bowl of raita (spiced yogurt), and achar (pickled vegetables) which I personally was not a huge fan of. The pickled vegetables are woowee!, pack quite the punch, and the yogurt sauce was too sour for my taste but to each their own. I appreciate being able to try all these dishes as they are without being watered down. The samosas are top notch and at $3 for 2, just add that on as an appetizer. It's a no-brainer. ;) The sauce with the chickpeas packed a nice heat to it but paired with the mint chutney and sweet sauce it was sooooo good. I would be a happy camper just eating that alone. Definitely don't forget about the hot beverages. I like the Masala chai (has added spices like cardamom compared to just the regular chai) and it pairs wonderfully with the rice pudding you get with the thali. Be prepared to go to the counter to pick what you want to order from the menu and pay. They give you a number to place on your table and then you sit down; they will bring your order to the table as soon as it is ready. We decided to order two Vegetable Thali Combos so we each picked three currys and naan and dessert. I picked chickpea curry, spinach paneer, and potato cauliflower curry. I have eaten a LOT of Indian food in the metro area. Countless places, from Canton, to novi, to Troy, and back. The first time I saw phulkari I was interested in it just based on its location. It's in a weird spot. The first couple times I tried eating there it was closed. Finally one day I went and it was open. I got a thali and some onion bhaji. I wasn't hyper impressed by the thali, but the onion bhaji was beyond good. I kept going back, trying different combinations of the thalis and always eating platefuls of the onion bhaji. Then one day I went with my wife and saw someone at a table eating tandoori chicken and it looked really really good. So I ordered one for myself. It came dripping with ghee and dusted in chaat masala powder. Since then, that's all I order. One whole chicken, a plate of onion bhaji, 2 naan, and a small side of achar pickle. Tried the vegetarian and animal murderer thali, paneer makhni was the star of the show, lamb curry and palak paneer was pretty damn great also, look forward to getting either one next time i come. They also had some kind of pickled vegetable that came with the thali that was so good, taking an order of that home next time ffs why is it so hard to find food with flavor around here! Portions are huge. Prices are super cheap. If you're not an aspiring fat boy like myself no reason you'd have to spend more than 10 bucks here. Everything was spiced really well and i appreciated that there was actually a good amount of chili pepper in the food. Not a whole lot, i would have preferred more, but it was there which is welcome because most restaurants in America will not spice your food unless you beg them and even then they skimp because they don't want you to complain i guess. Next time I'll definitely ask for it to be hot. On the decor side the place is nothing to look at. I'd rather not pay for it in higher food prices though so whatever as far as that. It's fairly clean, although both of our utensils had crusted food on them which was pretty unappetizing. Even when you get clean utensils later you still question how poorly they're cleaning any of their dishes that you could get some like that so it's a really bad look altogether. Lost a star for that. I would stick to the thali, though, we also had a vegetable biryani (okay), a whole tandoori chicken (seemed like it was cooked too quickly, and not seasoned enough, though it was colorful), and lamb kabobs (okay). Now this was a good dining experience! I wasn't too sure what to expect but was overall very pleased. When I walked in I was a bit concerned because it seemed to be a bit unkept, however, it was pretty clear that there was a large party that just left and they seemed to be a bit understaffed as one guy was cleaning the dining room and there seemed to be only two other people working. There was a fairly large TV on the wall playing what appeared to be music videos in possibly Punjabi language (not sure) but it was very pleasant and helped sync the atmosphere and food. I ordered the Vegetarian Thali $8 which came with two pieces of regular naan but I ordered two extra pieces of garlic naan based on other recommendations listed previously. That was a great add for $2. This was enough food for two people easily and very good! I also ordered a full order of Tandoori Chicken to go $10. I ate one piece before I left it was warm and juicy, however, was a bit bland based on others I've had but still good. They give you great portions for very reasonable prices. I went here with the mindset I was going to be walking into a sit down restaurant rather than fast-casual, and found myself surprised to walk up to a counter with a large menu displayed behind and be given a cup to gather my own water. The food here is wonderful and I think the Thali dishes are the way to go. You get to pick three of the vegetable or meat offerings of that day and a desert -- the Thali plate then comes with a pickled vegetable appetizer, Papadum, rice, and naan. I went with the Murgh Makhani (Buttered Chicken) to be safe and was very impressed by the even blending of the spices. Unfortunately I can not recall the names of the other meat options I chose but all were delightful with the Makhani being the spotlight. Mmm, and I washed it all down with a guava drink which I chose out of an assortment of some unique beverages. Stuffed I didn't get a chance to check out their assortment of intriguing desserts all freshly made and many which I had never seen before, but there is always next time! From the outside, you're kinda like eh, the inside is cafeteria-esque, so I only go there for lunch, and primarily take-out, but the food is phe-nom! The Thali plate is like your own personal buffet. Your choice of 3 different dishes, all vegetarian, all meat, or combo. Dishes rotate, so on average they have 5-6 different vegetarian and 3-4 meat dishes. The food here is primarily Punjabi, which is the northern district in India. I love the butter chicken here the most.
