Tiny dining area, only 4 tables inside. We sat down and were told someone would come and wait on us. The Bihari kebab looks like my chicken kafta I tend to favor. We ordered the Channa masala, bhindi masala, dal makhani and muglai chicken. No rice and bread. Almost 5 weeks would no rice or bread. The guy that took our food order couldn't believe we didn't want any bread or rice with our food and was nice enough to offer us some free whole wheat roti, we took a pass. We were given porcelain plates with a plastic to go ware, that's fine. The other guests aren't wearing masks walking around the place and the one waiter has his mask under nose and at times by his mouth even. He just needs to tighten them around his nose is all, it's cloth after all. He even serves the food to the tables without his mask on. Ugh. There was a small, short dark black hair in our first Channa masala, yuck. They said they would make us a new one. I had to point out the hair to the maskless waiter. The dal makhani is bland, it's not bad, asked for some hot sauce. None of the dishes are spicy at all. The muglai chicken is good. The bhindi masala is also good, not spicy though. We did get some warm hot sauce to add to all of the 4 dishes, much better flavor for all of her dishes afterwards. The second Channa masala was hair less. It tasted okay, added some spicy sauce to give it more kick. They charged us for the Sam's club bottle waters. Our service from our main waiter was so-so, not warm, didn't wear a mask, except to pull up his mask partly up his nose when he saw we had our masks on still. Food overall was average. The muglai chicken was the best of the 4 dishes for sure.

Lentil Soup

Lentils in soup were not fully cooked. They were crunchy and got stuck in your teeth. Chicken Shish Kebab was shriveled and dried up. I ended up eating the the grilled peppers and onions and taking the soup home to finish cooking. We were the only guests and it took almost 30 minutes to get food made that was not cooked correctly.

I was really excited to try this place and unfortunately was disappointed. Everything was just okay and the samosas were still doughy.

Star of India continues to prove why it's one of the gems of the Ferndale area. From the moment I…read morewalked in, I was greeted with warm smiles and genuinely friendly service that made me feel welcome right away. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and always seemed happy to help with recommendations. That kind of hospitality goes a long way, and it's something that really stood out during my visit. The ambiance strikes a great balance between comfortable and inviting. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere that's perfect whether you're stopping in for a casual lunch, a family dinner, or meeting up with friends. Everything felt clean, organized, and well-maintained, creating an environment where you can settle in and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed. Now for the food--the star of the show was definitely the butter chicken. It was absolutely outstanding. The chicken was incredibly tender, and the sauce was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. It had that perfect balance of savory spices and subtle sweetness that makes butter chicken such a beloved dish. Every bite felt comforting and satisfying, especially when paired with fresh naan to soak up every last bit of that amazing sauce. What I appreciate about Star of India is the variety on the menu. Beyond the butter chicken, there are so many classic Indian favorites that make this place worth coming back to again and again. The chicken tikka masala is full of bold flavor, the biryani is fragrant and satisfying, and the curry options offer something for everyone, whether you enjoy mild dishes or prefer a little extra spice. The menu does a great job showcasing the depth and variety of Indian cuisine, making it easy to find something you'll love. The portions are generous, and the value is excellent for the quality of food you receive. In a time when dining out can get expensive quickly, it's refreshing to find a restaurant that delivers both quality and quantity without cutting corners. You leave feeling like you got your money's worth. As someone who loves supporting local businesses, places like Star of India make me proud of the Ferndale dining scene. Ferndale has built a reputation for great food and a strong sense of community, and Star of India fits right in. Between the exceptional service, welcoming atmosphere, delicious food, and great value, it's easy to see why so many people keep coming back. If you're anywhere near Ferndale and craving authentic, flavorful Indian food, Star of India deserves a spot at the top of your list. I'll definitely be back, and I can't wait to explore even more of the menu next time.

It's been a while I had good Indian food in this area and it seems like a great place. We ordered kadhai paneer and lamb chops and both turned out great. Point to note for ourselves is to order spice level as hot for myself and medium for my white American bf whose spice tolerance isn't as high like myself but more than a mild for sure. Service was great. It is a family run business so the owner himself comes out to take feedback and talk to the guests that shows us the dedication in running this place.. we have to come back again for this as I want to try their biryanis. We will be back soon.

Butter chicken was creamy and savory. Chicken was tender. Hit all the spots for this iconic dish. Wanted to get this dish so I could judge it objectively rather than try something new like I did last time. I'm glad I did and happy to report while the chicken was good, the sauce was even better and paired beautifully with naan and rice. The sauce does come with some spice at baseline even if ordered with no spice but it blended well unlike last time. Lamb chop was my "special order"; again, glad I ordered it. Lamb chops (x5) were cooked well, with a hint of pink, and mixed perfectly with Indian spices. I am happy to say these were devoured quickly after opening. It was a 5/5 dish that paired favorably with the sauciness of the butter chicken. The owner contacted me himself, apparently there was an interim chef at the time of my initial review who did not make the dishes accordingly and who has now left. I was told I was not the only complaint. I am happy to say the owner - Sam - was cordial and apologetic about the situation. He made sure the dishes were cooked to his standards this time. There are few restaurants who's owners would go above and beyond in a situation like this and I will definitely be returning to Royal Oak Masala.

The older staffer seems more friendly and checked up on us. Ordered 2 dall soup, medium spice: Gobi Manchurian, Chana masala, dal tadka, butter chicken and mango chicken hot spice. 3 Naan and one rice with each main dish. $78.37 Gobi isn't crispy at all, soggy, it's okay. Not spicy. Heavy breading. The cauliflower falls out of some of the breading. The Daal soup is good, although quite watery. The mango and butter chicken sauce flavors are good, the spicy is definitely got a healthy kick. The chicken pieces are big chunks and they are dry and overcooked. The butter naan is good soft and billowy. The Chana and dal tadka tasted okay, although I did find either a white hair or white stringy lint in the Chana. I was told it might be onion or ginger. Some tandoori chicken is smoking and it's making us cough some. It's tickling our noses. We had to pay quickly and get out of there.

We agreed that this was the best Indian we've had in the area, by a mile. We ordered the meat samosas, paneer saag, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken biryani, garlic naan, garlic cheese naan, and mango lassi. For two, it was an obscene amount of food, but holy cow was it worth it (it all came out to ~$65). The samosas were crispy, hot, and delicious with excellent seasoning. When we added the mint chutney, it took it to a whole other level. The saag paneer was creamy and flavorful. The chicken tikka masala was spicy, creamy, and delicious, easily the best I've ever had. When the spice started to get to our heads, the mango lassi cooled things off, it was super refreshing. Naan was top tier. We made fried rice and added a fried egg to the biryani this morning and it made an awesome breakfast. 10/10, we will be back as our regular Indian spot!

Keep seeing lots of folks picking up orders and double parking their cars in the driveway to come in and pick up their carry out orders. Ordered starter Gobi Manchurian, veggie samosa, 2 dal soup, Chana masala, Tarka daal, mushroom bhaji and tandoori chicken. $94.24 They gave us the crunchy thin Papadum. Be careful while eating that the seasoning on top doesn't flip up into your eyes, it did that to my husband. He flicked off the seasoning so it wouldn't do it again. The Papadum is good. There was a random empty water bottle at the table. Table top is peeling, needs a refinish. I would put the fly strip in a more discrete spot and not hang it in the vestibule behind the counter. The samosas are good, dough is nice and light, like a wonton and it's packed with potatoes, peas and corn, which is a bit odd. It's better with some chutney. The Gobi Manchurian tastes good, just not crispy at all. The lentil soup is scalding, it's good. I like the roasted garlic in the soup and added some lemon to it as well. The Chana masala is okay, they put potatoes in it as filler instead of more chick peas. Other than the potatoes, it's good. The butter chicken is rather sweet, it's still pretty good. I am glad the chicken chunks aren't too big in this dish. Not a fan when it seems like the pieces are half a breast of chicken. Mushrooms aren't too bad. Not special. The lentils are good. Their garlic naan tastes sweet, almost, it's decent. The tandoori chicken is good.
