What better way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stonewall than to attend "Grande Chansons du Passe", a concert of the Phoenix Metropolitan Men's Chorus. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Some pieces brought tears to my eyes, particularly their moving renditions of "You Raise Me up" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". A number of the songs were prefaced by the sometimes funny and often moving personal accounts of some members of the chorus, projected on a screen above the stage, adding impact to the emotions generated by the songs when they were sung. The costuming, dancing, humor, and themes in the performances were quite creative, especially in the second part of the concert which featured selected songs from The Sound of Music, The Mikado, Hairspray, West Side Story, and The Wizard of Oz. I look forward to attending their future performances, as well as that of the Phoenix Metropolitan Philharmonic Ensemble which, together with the Chorus, is under the umbrella of Grand Canyon Performing Arts. read more
