Growing up in NY I loved having a variety of options of different kinds of food to eat. Puerto Rican food was 1 of my favorites and when I moved to AZ I discovered Phoenix Coqui. When I first moved here they had a food truck which I've been to several times but this weekend I went to the grand opening of their new restaurant. I have tried their Empanada setas Seasoned sautéed mushroom filled empanadilla Tostones Fried green plantains with garlic-mayo sauce Arroz con gandules Seasoned rice with pigeon peas I'm glad to see that they were able to open a place in Midtown. Everything there i tried was delicious. Now all they need is to make a vegan/vegetarian Mofongo bowl. I will be back. read more

Rarely do i ever leave reviews under 4 star, but have to comment in hopes that it may help out the establishment. First the staff was friendly and food ordered was on time. Just wanted to try, after reminiscing about my 2 trips to Puerto Rico in 2020 and 21, had some amazing food. With prices being what they are now, i decided to get a staple item, i ordered the Empendas carne, and 1 pizza empanada for about 9$ highly disappointed, lacked flavor and was empty inside. Maybe my memory of amazing stuffed empanadas inCondado PR spoiled/skewed me, the cost was 1/2 and had way more filling, flavor(meat-cheese). Absolutely incredible little place! I had the Mofongo bowl with chicken. The portions were huge! Chicken was super tender and juicy. Rice was a great addition to the mofongo. Over the food was great and I had plenty for leftovers. The inside was bright yellow and clean with prints on the wall. It was clean and very inviting. We wanted to like this place because some Puerto Rican reviewers raved, but we had an awful experience and got food poisoning. The food and service were both an utter disappointment. We will never go back. My empanadillas were pretty much all (bleh deep fried) pastry with very little filling. The rice was meh. My companion said that his Cubano sandwich wasn't good. We went on Valentine's Day because of their special email offer, which we had to ask for multiple times due to a shift change, even arguing with the second cashier that it was real, who finally asked her boss and the special deal was already programmed into their computer. I pointed out their funny email, which in Spanish gave customers a 15% discount, but the English words offered 20%, see picture. This place just doesn't compare to La Famosa in DC. But the pina colada (served in a plastic cup, ugh) was okay. read more

One of the things I enjoy the most about Phoenix is their diversity so I was very excited to try a Puertorican restaurant. Service was excellent. I love the story- Food truck turned brick and mortar. The people have spoken! The co owner assisted us at the counter. Warm and friendly, he provided a run down of their menu and explained what the authentic Puerto Rican dish Molfongo is and highlighted their most popular dishes. If you love plantains like me then this restaurant is worth the trip. Delicious, garlicky and nicely seasoned. A interesting range of flavors. Highly recommended if you haven't tried Puerto Rican food before. The Mofongo bowl with pulled pork was layered with garlicky mash plantain and Arroz Con Gandules. The pulled pork was tender and salted perfectly. The bowl had awesome weight and was definitely a filling item on its own. Great portion vs price. I was most excited for the Tostones. These were an amazing item on their own. Fried and cooked wonderfully. The edges were a nice contrast to the not at all greasy center of the flattened plantain. The garlic sauce that came with it gave them a different dimension making them a memorable item. Empanadilla De Pizza and carne where crispy with a really delicious crust. The meat had a nice stout beef to it and the pizza one had some excellent seasoning and cheese. The Alcapurria had a really great flavor and the meat within had a super savory aroma. The reviews here stating that it wasn't seasoned well or bland makes me think some of these people should get their mouths checked by a doctor. If you want to try something new and local give this awesome restaurant a try. Really fulling and nice local surprise. read more

Wow! I'm so glad we found this place. This is a tiny little place. You order at the front and then find your seats after. I got the Mofongo con Camarones, my hubby got Mofongo and pulled pork, my daughter got the pulled pork and Arroz con gandules. We ordered 2 Alcapuria and Tostones as sides. All of it was very tasty. My husband and I were looking forward to trying this restaurant, and I went and ordered dinner to go yesterday. We had some knowledge of Puerto Rican food, as we had visited San Juan several years ago. I ordered the Monfongo con carne frita, and my husband ordered the Plato de Pernil. The pulled pork was juicy and the seasoned rice was perfect, and the amount was quite ample. Unfortunately my order was uneatable. The mashed plantains had no seasoning, and the pork was very dry and fried so hard that it was difficult to chew. I could not eat mine, and it went in the trash. I was able to share my husband's dish, but I would never order the fried pork again. read more

The tostones didn't make it to the picture we ate them so fast! The place is impeccably clean, cozy, and has a great ambiance with amazing quick service. The food is amazing, we've tried a couple Puerto Rican restaurants here in the phoenix metro area and this one is the best. I had a pork sandwich with pickles and garlic mayo and my companion had an empanadilla plate (pizza and chicken). The sandwich was HUGE (I could not eat it all), juicy and full of flavor. I discovered Phoenix Coqui years ago when I was at a St Patrick's day event and I saw a Puertorrican flag waving in the distance, which happened to be their food truck at the time. Since then they have become my family's go to place whenever we have a craving for empanadillas, mofongo, carne frita, quesitos, etc. Just this past Christmas Eve, I had a bunch of family visiting from Puerto Rico and we decided to buy their Christmas dinner for 10-11 people. It was perfection. The pork was delicious and seasoned on point and the arroz con gandules was yummy. My whole family was happy with it and we ate leftovers for the next 2 days. I usually recommend this place to all my friends and family visiting from Puerto Rico. I'm so glad we have a piece of Puerto Rico right here in the Arizona desert. read more

Solid food truck in Phoenix. We were in the area visiting family and they had suggested this food truck. Their setup is actually pretty great. Setup in a parking lot outside a bar (smart) with picnic tables and lights. Two guys appear to run this truck and they are both extremely friendly. Their menu is small but has something for everyone. I had the pernil platter which came with some greens and rice. My pernil was cooked perfectly. I just wish there had been more of it instead of mostly rice. Their sauce is pretty good, too. Prices are okay for what you get. It's the customer service that will have you coming back. read more
