On new comics Wednesday, the staff couldn't be bothered to handle or kick out a babbling, insane person, who was stripping off their clothes. It was left to me, the customer, to repeatedly tell the person in question to move so that I could get access to the wall of new comics. While the staff watched. Otherwise, their selection of new comics both independent and major publisher is decent. No older backissues on hand though. read more

Except, Tanzie was actually MORE excited to get into the store! In my short time spent in Seattle, as a nerd and lover of board games, I was directed to this wonderful spot. The vibes were immaculate. As I entered, I saw a laughter-filled game of commander taking place and a fun game of D&D down in the back, being run for some local kids! Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves throuroughly, and the events board was packed with upcoming activities. My attention was mainly on MTG, but I saw a wide selection of both mainstream and local comic book projects while I looked around and a plethora of tabletop/board games, too! The staff were more than willing to give their thoughts and recommendations on the product selection and were incredibly kind and accommodating (we had the pleasure of being served by Miranda!). I'd strongly recommend anyone interested in nerd culture to have a visit, you won't be disappointed! read more

Perhaps the perfect comic shop does not exist, but Phoenix Comics and Games on Capitol Hill comes close if you're looking for new single issue comics or graphic novels. Phoenix is right next to Light Rail and in one of the densest parts of the City, yet somehow maintains a laid-back neighborhood vibe. In my experience (which is pretty extensive since this was my main shop for about three years), the staff are friendly, but not super talkative. Their subscription service offers a discount that gets better as you add more books, although I never got more than the lowest-tier 5% off. Phoenix owners and staff have done a great job adjusting to COVID and keeping things safe for their customers. The timing of the pandemic was pretty bad for them, too, since they had just expanded their space in 2019. The dedication and care that they have shown has been nothing short of amazing! I do have some quibbles from a comics-centric perspective. This place really does seem to strike a 50-50 balance between comics and board/card games and tabletop RPGs. Which is great, although it's still a smaller space even after expansion, and with so much of the space dedicated to gaming, they can't maintain a very large stock of back issues or obscure titles. They do carry some small-press and indie books, which is great to see! If I'm not mistaken, they partner with Emerald Comics Distro to get some books by local indie creators, although I've always felt that their local/indie section could use a bit more curation. Similarly, their all-ages section feels like an afterthought. I can't speak to their manga selection, as I only recently started reading manga and haven't checked their stock, but they never struck me as manga-centric -- I think American-style comics are more their cup of tea. Sadly, Phoenix is no longer very convenient for me since I moved to a new neighborhood and started working remotely. I haven't been able to visit much in the last couple years, so it's possible some things have changed recently. That said, I still feel confident in recommending them to anyone visiting Capitol Hill or riding by on light rail. As for me, my quest for the perfect comic shop continues! read more

It's a nice, large, clean space. The people who work here all seem friendly and excited about the products they sell. A big group of gamer adults were in attendance when I stopped in, and even through my mask, the smell of unwashed clothing and days-old stale cigarettes was oppressive. That's not the responsibility of the store, but the odor filled the room. Maybe the game boys would want to step up their hygiene a little. If you don't want superheroes, Star Wars, or LGBTQ coming of age comics, this is not your store. Some shockingly poor-quality local comics zines and some RPG stuff as well. I was disappointed. Beautiful, clean games/comic shop that hosts a friendly tabletop community for Magic the Gathering events. I live in the area and love tabletop games, so I usually come through Phoenix to browse. I also used to play FNM here pretty regularly before some other life priorities took over. Prices aren't cheap, but they're not much more than Amazon pricing - perfect for finding last-minute gifts on your way to a friend's birthday party or to pick up that game you totally forgot to order for game night tonight. I haven't had much interaction with staff besides Nick, but he is one of the friendliest local game store owners that I've ever met. He goes out of his way to make you feel welcome, and I was most impressed at how quickly he learned my name when I first started visiting as a newcomer to Seattle. My only word of advice is to not try to drive here. Parking on Broadway, the main street of Capitol Hill, is near-impossible to find, and trying to park at Dick's is guaranteed to get you ticketed within 10 minutes. read more

First - that is the problem here. That comment. You are white before you are queer. You are not minority owned. It's very misleading especially when you're not even queer minority in the area. Minority; "the smaller number or part, especially a number that is less than". You are in Capital Hill and on Broadway, it's dominantly white LGBTQ. Black queers and trans deserve those spaces too. Places like yours and comments like yours are a problem. white spaces that hide behind the minority part. Y'all are white? All of you. Second - Sure it's easy to say you didn't hire a token but here we go again. That's internalized racism and most of the time white people don't realize that even if their intention was pure, there's actually an underlying reason for those choices. It's not just black folks that need to heal from slavery. Third - This was my own experience? So you're telling me that I didn't.... experience it? Ah yes let me a person of color who is so so exhausted of this exact conversation, educate you on how to be better. And give you the answers and do the thinking and energy expending for you. When I and many other bipoc enjoy a hobby or activity that is in a white space it's really daunting to enter. It's really hard to engage, or get to be myself. When I went in and I saw people like me it made me so happy. Finally I can relate to someone. The store is set up for white folks?? I came in during black history month right after you let go of the first black employee I had seen. Oof. And the black "featured" comics were in the back on a small shelf. lol excuse me? It was pathetic and I actually got sad. It's like no one tried or cared. I've seen how you re draw a board every week, and re face and organize the stuff you care about. What about spawn, black panther, king in black? When you briefly hired another black employee I felt comfortable enough to play some games one evening in the back but the rest of the staff was VISIBLY bothered and vocal and spoke to us several times about being loud. We weren't even loud but the way we communicate bothered you so much. And that's just my story there are many more experiences like mine. Get you and your business Culture and Racial Sensitivity training. Don't make people of color explain themselves and educate you. Educate yourself, reflect how your business looks. read more

This has to be the most inclusive and lovely comic shop I've had the pleasure of being in. As a trans/queer person I felt welcomed by the staff and didn't feel like it was as intimidating as other comic shops. They have all the current comics out with a chalk board out front changed weekly for exciting new issues. Outside of the popular big sellers, they have sections for lgbtq, non-binary, trans, bipoc, and local creators and comics, so I can feel connected to the community right here in Seattle. Along with that they have a great selection of games and tables where you can play at the store! It's a great place to discover something new, get your weekly comics, or invite friends and play for a while. If you live here or are visiting, I would highly recommend making this a stop! read more

Easily Phoenix Comics gets five stars from me. What earns them major kudos is that they are open late, very late for a comic book store! Midnight! Amazing, simply amazing! They have a good selection of current issues from all of the mainstream comic companies as well as many of the independent ones. They have events here like trading card outings which is fun! The folks that work here are extremely friendly and very approachable for any questions that you may have. I mainly come here to play Magic events, and it's one of my favorite places to play Magic, not just in Seattle, but anywhere in the US. I've played at many local game stores across the whole country and Phoenix ranks among the best of them. My review will mostly focus on playing Magic events here, since that's generally why I come here. - The community here is really great. Sometimes you'll go to a shop and the community/players there are rude, unfriendly, condescending, etc. Not here. I have yet to meet anyone here that is any of those things. The play level here is pretty high too, so if you're a veteran player you'll feel challenged, but if you're a newer player you'll feel comfortable as people here are friendly and welcoming. - The shop is very nice looking inside. It really has to be one of the nicest looking local game stores I've ever seen. It's new looking, sleek, and very organized. Normally, when events aren't going on, it doesn't look like there would be that much space as there are shelves of board games sprawled all over the store. Somehow, whenever an event happens, a lot of the shelves in the back are magically gone and all of a sudden, the store is actually very spacious. This is a popular place to play Magic and a lot of people show up for events, especially on Friday nights, but it doesn't feel particularly crowded given how many people are there. - It's in a great location. It's right in the middle of Capitol Hill. Dick's, the burger place, is right next door. A lot of people go there to grab a quick bite in-between or after rounds. There's several bars and restaurants nearby. One of my favorite tea shops, Tea Republik, is a few minutes walk away and I often grab a drink there between rounds. - The staff are awesome. The owner Nick is a really cool guy and seems engaged with the community. I don't encounter other staff much during event hours, but I've dropped by a few other random times to buy a few things, and the staff there were always very nice and patient. - The prizes are nice. The structure here is "modified pack-per-win", which means basically pack-per-win unless you go undefeated, in which case you get a few more additional packs in addition. I like this structure because if you don't do well you still get something and aren't too unhappy, but it still provides high incentive to win games. I do wish that draws counted for something as well, but I can see how it can be inherently difficult to make them count with this type of prize structure. read more

I called this place on my failed quest to find someplace to play a few pick up games of magic while on vacay (seriously, it would've been easier for me to find a prostitute). I was told to come in and see what happened. One ubber ride later there was no magic but there WAS a great employee! We spent 90 some odd minutes talking shop. I'd call this a welcome addition to the nerds on the hill. It has a little bit of everything -- Comics of course. Board games. Miniatures. Dice sets. RPG's. Toys. Nerd clothing and gear. Space for gaming sessions galaore. A great jack of all trades kind of shop. While my interest in comics has waned -- Chris can get his fill while I oggle the Reaper miniatures. We both can go over the board games and leave with something to play that makes us both happy. Oh, and the staff? Seriously. Professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. When we popped in he was talking pets with one customer, helped us find a board game in no time flat, and laughed when we mentioned we were not part of PAX and actually spent the weekend avoiding those crowds. Walking past the shop today went like this: Me: "Wait, is it free comic book day?" He: "Apparently" Me: "Wait, Cap. Hill got a comic book store?" He: "And it opens for the first time in 30 minutes" Me: "Well timed, let's get coffee and return" ... And we did to the joy of a great free comic day spread and the delights of a new comic bookstore opening in the neighborhood. The comic selection is pretty good for a starting day and true to title there are also a number of games. I even spied a colorful selection of dice for anyone needing a D20 in order to choose what to buy at Dicks. The staff were friendly and said that they would start a folder (aka subscription) for us as long as we had at least one book and picked it up regularly (at least once a month), a fair deal, made fairer by the fact that there is a discount that comes with this frequent shopper scenario. I have high hopes for this shop and I see no reason this will not become the stop for all of my dude's Deadpool needs. Now if you will excuse me I have a free comic book day haul to read. read more

A great shop right next to Dicks. Phoenix was built over night and provides a great selection of comics, signed copies, trade paperbacks, and graphic novels. They offer subscription services, so if your into a series of comics you can pick them right up at the shop. They have tables for customers who want to nerd it up and geek out, by playing board and trading card games they sell at the shop. The staff is awesome, friendly and knowledgeable. I'm kind of thrown off by the reviews here because my friends and I have been here probably 6 or 7 times and every single time the staff has been extremely unhelpful or downright rude. It's like pulling teeth to get anyone to answer a simple question. The most help I've ever received is one of the staff pointing in a vague area and saying "it's over there." without even looking up at me when I asked him if he can show me where the item I was looking for is. I went the opposite way for the door, unnoticed. I would think that perhaps I had done something to upset the staff somehow (major doubt) if I hadn't found out my friends had similar experiences. read more

Great comic shop on the hill. The staff is nice and helpful, there's a wide selection of big name and indie titles. They also host a whole calendar of events, including games (Magic and board games), book clubs (like the monthly Seattle Feminist Comic Book Club- you can find that on FB), and author/artist signings. I keep a small pull list, and sometimes can only stop in once a month or so to pick things up, and they're always great about it, and had never missed a book. It feels nice to not worry about it. Also, super helpful when you need to order something. Sometimes popular titles sell out fast there though so if there's something you're really hankering to check out and you haven't reserved it ahead, I would recommend going on its release day. read more

I switched to another store after they kept making errors on standing orders, not informing me when a series would end or reboot, etc. I kept missing key issues in the various titles I was collecting and finally gave up. I also found the staff unfriendly and uninterested. I think they are mostly there for gamers and, therefore, comic collectors are not that important to their business. Just dropped by here today after hearing of it's recent opening from a friend. I'd generally been avoiding the area because of construction so I took some time out to swing by. Overall the store is looking promising. Staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. All the top games are acknowledged and I even found a few unknown gems. If I had to complain about anything it would be that the store feels a bit empty. I imagine this is done to keep the store less crowded during tournaments and events. Since they sell both comics and tabletop games I imagine they will be having a TON of events which I'll be attending. read more
