We love Metsker's Maps. Everytime we're in Seattle we have to go and stop in at this store. This is one of those great "shops" that you hear about, and that Pike's Place is famous for. It's unique, it's absolutely perfect, it's not in any danger if getting replaced by the Internet. And if you love maps, wow. A lot of the maps they have here are legitimate works of art. The staff is also very friendly, and they're great with kids. My kids love this place. They are also really knowledgeable and can help you locate things. This was the most unique store I came across in Seattle. Had so many incredible books, maps, calendars, and trinkets that are educational on any and every level. There are maps, books, travel guides of the local Seattle, Washington, and PNW as well as maps for countries all around the world. There are some really fun books such as maps of movie worlds and fictional places or best hikes and roadtrips around the world. There are postcards, stickers, pins, travel journals, etc. There are language books and dictionaries for a variety of languages too. It's not a huge selection, but this isn't the focus of the store. I was at the store 3 years ago this summer. I really liked the store because it had many interesting maps and history time-line charts. I was an out-of-state tourist. I was going to purchase a substantial amount of maps and charts as souvenirs. I tried to talk to one of the employees at a counter but he was talking to another employee. I waited for at least 5 minutes, hoping he will stop and talk to me and see if I needed help. But the two guys never stopped talking to each other. Mind you I was only five feet away and I was looking straight at one of the guys. There was no way that they didn't know I needed help. I am 6'1" and Asian. I guess they didn't think I was important and chose to ignore me. I finally gave up and left. Needless to say, I was disappointed I didn't get the history chart they had displayed near the front entrance. And of course I would never set foot into this store again. read more

And I'm so happy that we did This place is obviously covered with all kinds of maps - local ones, foreign countries, world maps, etc. They also have travel journals, "scratch off" posters (to track where you've been), globes, postcards and even little desk-sized flags of every country in the world! Maps galore! Metsker Maps is such a treasure, especially with its location in Pike Place Market. When I have time to stroll around the Market I find myself wandering in Metsker Maps 'cause I love maps! And they have all different kinds of every possible destination you can imagine. Metsker Maps is a spacious store, located on the surface level of the Market. It's inviting and welcoming, and staff are knowledgeable, so ask them if you're looking for anything in particular. In addition to the several, various maps they have, there are maps that are already framed, ready for display, and they can also customize your maps! I bought my bestie a map of all the national parks because it's her goal to visit all of them, so was able to buy a map where she could literally scratch off on the map the national parks she's visited to keep track. They have traditional and non-traditional maps, too, and ones with infographics, which are always fun to check out. I've especially found that they have a ton of awesome gifts for the wanderlusts in your life. Not only are there several different guide books of far-off places, but they have more fun travel books of specific hobbies, like foodie destinations or a travel journal of famous authors. Such a wonderful selection. They also have a good amount of children's gifts, all travel-related, of course. Lately my hobby has been North American history, focusing on the events surrounding the European and American exploration of the continent in the 1600-1800's. Turns out the Link+ system at the Sactown library web site is a great way to tap into all sorts of cool but rare historical books. My problem is that my geographical knowledge has limits - I didn't know where Athabasca is or even the course of the Columbia River. I needed some maps to make sense out of all the amazing stories I was reading. After spending some time on the web researching atlases, I had found a few likely candidates to follow the paths of the explorers. But nice atlases are pricey and I didn't want to drop $40 on a book I wouldn't use. So I call the folks at Metsker Maps and asked them what they thought. They named two of the books I had already noted, plus a couple others. So, I find a couple old beat up copies on eBay for next to nothing, and then drop a chunk of change on the two better ones at Metsker. They were absolutely correct - thanks to Metsker Maps I now have a great set of historical and modern atlases and feel I got a great value for my money. I can't say enough about this store - if you are in Seattle and have any interest in travel, history, geography, geology, or related subjects like presentation of information, or are just a info geek like me, then be sure to drop by. I could spend hours and hours in this store! They have things you would never even think of that are related to maps and geography. It is amazing. The staff is super attentive and eager to assist with helping you find what you need. I highly recommend checking them out! When the Seattle neighborhood maps first came out this was one of the only places you could get them. Naturally I looked through all of the options before settling on my favorite color scheme. We could never find the perfect sized/best looking map for our needs but Metsker delivers. Now we have a much better idea of what to do as well as where to get the maps from. I'm a cartographer so you know when I say that Metsker's is my favorite map store in the world, it's high praise. We stumbled onto this place during our recent trip to Seattle. We stayed here for at least a half hour, mostly because we were so absorbed solving a puzzle that was on display. It was a puzzle of the world's countries, but also included facts on each country. Solving this puzzle together was one of the highlights of our trip. In fact my husband secretly bought me this puzzle for our first anniversary. This is one of my favorite stores in Seattle. When I told the lady I wanted an antique world map written in Latin with scaly sea monsters all over it, she knew exactly what I was talking about. I had already checked out Middle Earth and Game of Thrones. The British-American telegraph map was cool, as was Shakespeare's England, but I wanted monsters and incompleteness. #nailedit Additionally, I wanted a copy of Mt. Rainier National Park topo, laminated, so I could geek out on that and mentally prepare for the nexk expedition. Only by seeing the slope angle relative to distance could I plan the correct number of pack penguins to carry my gear to Camp IV. Camp IV is where you get a morphine drip and a bag of saline after you've lost a foot down a crevasse and the penguin rescue takes too long so your other foot gets trenchfoot as well. Penguin doctors can only do so much. Their flippers have a poor grasp on surgical equipment, and their poor concentration and attention span leads to numerous botched operations...but it was the best we could obtain on short notice, you see. We also needed a number of pussycats to keep the penguins from clowning too much or too often. When the stern voice of the Puppy Master can nowhere be heard, it must be the disciplined pussycats who mete out punishment to an errant penguins. Nothing so warms a gentleman's raw stomach lining at the end of a long climb like fatty cake sandwiches with flipper bread, along with a tankard of grog and hot tea. We have to plan for the horses too, because although the penguins are the expedition porters, horses are walking meat sticks on four hooves. Horse steak with horsey sauce served with fattycake royale is a dish every expedition penguin chef must master months before heading to the Himalaya...or Ranier. Oh! And this shop is a great place to get Cascadia swag too! They have maps AND bumper stickers. What do you think President Orange will say if we ask if we can secede? As a planner and general geography enthusiast, this store is my happy place. Maps, globes, framed wooden topography, books, more maps...Metsker has it all, and for surprisingly reasonable prices considering how special their selection is. This is seriously one of the coolest stores I've ever been in. You could really do a lot with what this store offers. As a simple example, I bought a map of US airports and map pins so that I can pin which I've flown through. And there are a ton of other maps you could have fun with in a similar way, from simple to extravegant. I would be in here on a weekly basis if I lived in Seattle, and will stop in every time I visit the city. A must visit for locals to globetrotters. read more

If I were to go back to college today, the first class I would sign up for would be geography. Be it globes, maps, road trips, etc. I'm in love with knowing my east, west, north and south. When I heard there was an entire store dedicated to maps in the Pike Market, I moved this destination to the top of my itinerary. My luggage was fairly full by this point in the journey, so I had to exercise a little more self control than norm. The biggest lure at Metsker's for me were the large scale maps draped on the walls, specifically, the European-specific ones. As the other reviews have already noted, the store is filled to the brim with anything related to place: flashcards, kid's geography books, stationary, globes in all sizes, topography maps, so on and so forth. The one thing I was hoping to find that I didn't, was more art-style maps - quirky and wild interpretations of geography like those I have often found on line. Aside from that, I can't think of much else this store could carry in the realm of travel and maps. In the end, I walked away with a plastic world desk map that I am hoping to use for practicing my European geography. So, I might not be enrolled in a college course but that doesn't mean I'm not going to give this a whirl on my own! :) read more
