This was the second time to eat here and i enjoyed it as much as the first time! I had the beef ball pho soup with extra tendin and my boyfriend had combination fried rice. We started off with their spring roll and I must say they have the best peanut sauce i have ever tasted! I've been to many pho restaurants around rhe country and honestly love their sauce! The soup was delicious, but the side plate of herbs was a little skimpy, with one small stem of basil leaves and sort of wilted bean sprouts. First time visited here because of a 4 star reviews. I will have to give just one star. I ordered the house recommended shrimp fried rice. It turned out to be the worst experience ever. The rice had not taste, I guess the cook forgot to put salt. It also tasted like chemical, maybe that's how the prepare the shrimp. I also found a trace of 2 tiny shredded chicken and some egg shell in my rice. This is a great disappointment. read more

When it comes to service this place is really poor, my friend and I came in at 710 and it took 30 minutes to even receive our appetizer. Three parties enter after us and they receive their food and appetizers before we did. When my friend and I realize what was happening, we asked where are food was and what was taking so long. We were told it was because we order two appetizers and not one. We also were told it was because the chef decided to go in a different order, either way the excuses didn't make any since. We were highly upset and once our food finally arrive we had lost our appetites. The taste of the food was not worth the wait and the attitude and professionalism of the waitress were not up to par. This place is actually not bad. I had the mixed fried rice and my friend had the special beef pho. The meat in the friend rice was a little meh... It was a little dry and I wasn't 100% sure what it was. However, it tasted ok. The dish as a whole was actually really good. The serving was very generous - enough for lunch the next day. My friend loves Pho. So his was gone in seconds. He had a similar complaint about the meat in his pho, but said overall it was really yummy. We'll be back. read more

I've been here a few times and first off the bat was disappointed with the service. Secondly, the pho was okay. Nothing amazing, nothing to write home about. Except, when they served us shredded cabbage with the pho. No basil, no bean sprouts, no jalepeno, just shredded cabbage, what? I come to this place often and I really like most of the food. The reason they get two stars is simple. I came in to get a dinner to go at 932pm and they stated they close at 930pm but everything says they don't close until 10. Even the time on the door says they close at 10am. I've been to Pho Viet several times since their opening with my S.O. We both love trying new foods or foods that are not customary in our region. In short... we both really love to eat! The food was great every visit and the wait staff were friendly and very knowledgeable of the items on the menu. Since it's usually not extremely crowded when we go, we have not had to wait long or feel rushed. I favor the 72 64 71 and a few of the flank/noodle dishes. We took two of the boys (13 and 14) and they both loved it! I'll have to take my younger one since he loves trying new and interesting foods as well. I'm ready for it to cool off in Columbia, so my wife will also have my Pho Viet craving. The Pho is to die for. I like the chicken garlic broth with the ramen style noodles. Add the hoisin sauce, and the jalapenos. SO GOOD. I also love the garlic and black pepper tofu. This isn't a pho dish. It is dry noodles with pretty much what the name says. The tofu is cooked perfectly every time. I've heard the Decker location is better, but I'm not sure it could be so much better to drive there, as this place is great! read more

Passing through with my family of 5 kids and two adults.. asked for 4 kids sweet tea and 1 kid coke which we received in styrofoam cups-half full and no ice.. hmm ok.. maybe because the tea was cool already because it was kept in the refrigerator? But the coke- draft and half full with no ice... ok that was fine.. kids didn't complain.. We asked if there was a house special that they offered which is what we were used to at the Vietnamese restaurants in our town.. immediately she gave us a look and said "no. No house special".. uh ok..? We weren't asking for a discounted house price.. Then we proceeded to ask her if they serve fried crispy tofu separately. Then pointed to the number on the menu.. I then looked at her and asked her if the tofu were crispy and she responded "yes, but well together." Ok so I placed an order for one.. received it and definitely wasn't crispy fried but more of pan seared... Ordered pho for myself and kiddos.. flavor was bland and not much of a kick to the broth other than beef based (maybe because I'm a foodie..? And love food..?) husband had a platter that consisted of bbq pork, rice, shrimp.. he ate he pork but nothing else.. had to ask for more refill.. a young man gave us a refill with ice and a full cup, a female server refilled one cup half full still with no ice..overall visit was just not an experience that will make us want to come back. I'm a good tipper considering my kids are well behaved when we go Out to eat and does not mess much but it just wasn't welcoming nor was the service impressive. Sad day at Pho Viet. I've been here many times for the Pho and it's been busy and the waits usually worth it. But today we decided to get other things on the menu. The stir fry yellow noodle was okay but the spare ribs was...disappointing. After waiting a while (it was busy) we still left hungry. There was barely ANY meat on the ribs. It mostly just bones. The vegetable had no taste. I'm pretty surprised they let that spare rib plate leave the kitchen. I guess we'll just stick with the pho. read more

It's never good to post a less than good review for any restaurant but here I am. Pho is one of my and my daughter's favorite foods. I've been eating this perfect dish for decades all over the country, from small mom and pops to Pho chains that have sprung up as Vietnamese food had become more popular. Over the years I've been blessed to have several friends from Vietnam who invited me into their homes to share a bowl of homemade pho and learn to make their families recipes. I've learned those recipes and make Pho at home. My daughter, 6 years old, has been coming with me to get Pho since she was an infant. She had her first bowl at 2 and by age 3 was ordering her own favorite combination (meatball and rare beef steak). When we learned we were moving from an area (South Florida) where there are Pho restaurants every few miles and moving outside of Columbia SC, one of the first things we went to Yelp for was Asian Markets and of course Pho. Pho Viet 5 Points came up highest rated. This past Friday we decided to give them a try. Good Pho depends solely on the broth. A combination of beefy, ginger, anise, onion, sweet and salt all in perfect harmony. Each flavor there but none overwhelming another. A good Pho restaurant allows the customer to order the meats they enjoy to customize their own bowls to taste, not simply order by number. A "salad" is served on the side traditionally containing bean sprouts, culantro (not Cilantro) Thai basil, chilies and lime slices. On the table is a selection of sauces, Hoisin, Fish Sauce, Sambal, Siracha and others. We arrived at lunchtime and got our table. My first hint that Viet Pho would not rate well was the lack of fish sauce, Sambal, or chili oil on the table. They have Siracha, Hoisin, salt and soy sauce. Our waitress brought over chopsticks and a traditional spoon for me and a western spoon and fork for my daughter who looked at her like she was nuts. My daughter has used chopsticks as long as she's used a fork. She asked for chopsticks (which never came). We ordered drinks, Bubble tea for my daughter, water and tea for me. Once the drinks arrived we ordered, fresh spring rolls with Nuoc Cham ( Vietnamese sauce/dressing) instead of peanut sauce and our Pho selection. We learned Viet Pho only had one size bowls and isn't receptive to selecting your own meats instead of their pre-determined combinations. The waitress agreed to have mine made, brisket, fatty flank and my absolute favorite tendon. My daughter had meatballs. Our spring rolls arrived first with peanut sauce, not Nuoc Cham as I'd ordered. I tried to get our waitresses attention but couldn't. The spring rolls are passable, the rice paper not dried around the ends (a plus). The peanut sauce was ok, overwhelmingly nutty with little other flavors. Our Pho arrived with an immediate strike 2. First, although we ordered 2 bowls of Pho, my daughter was not given a garnish plate. Secondly the garnish plate was very small and contained bean sprouts, a slice of lime, 2 jalapenos and 2 sprigs of cilantro. No basil, none. They do not have any. Unreal. The first thing a person should do when a bowl of Pho arrives is to smell then taste the broth before stiring or adding anything to the bowl. Instead of a harmony of flavors, Viet Pho's broth is overwhelming sweet. So sweet it over powers the other subtle flavors that should be in a well made broth. We ate a bit and decided to take the rest home where I could play with the broth a bit and have the rest for dinner. After trying to get sometimes attention for over 10 minutes I finally stood up and walked up to our waitress and asked for to-go cups. I was brought one cup, nothing for my daughter's leftovers. I paid, left a nominal tip and we left. Long and short review: Location/parking. Convenient location with metered parking like most of Columbia. Decor/Upkeep: Viet Pho is old, not the cool old of an established restaurant but an unclean old. They need an update and thorough cleaning. Service: is lacking. Not exactly rude but inattentive to the customer. It's clear they are not welcoming, at all, to kids. My daughter was seemingly invisible. Menu: Wide variety of Vietnamese favorites. The lack of bowl sizes and ability for a customer to choose their own combinations is a major drawback as is the small garnish plates without basil (again unheard of). The restaurant was steadily busy which is not surprising given its location and lack of any real competition in the area. I wouldn't recommend them but they are clearly popular. Thankfully I know how to make Pho at home and can easily find the ingredients at local Asian markets which is what I will be doing until, hopefully, a much better Pho restaurants opens. First things first, this is the ONLY place to get Pho if you live in the Vista, downtown, or Five Points without traveling all the way to Decker. That being said, I must have had like 40 bowls of combination Pho and a corresponding number of summer/spring rolls over the course of a few years so I can confidently say that their food is good and perhaps more importantly, consistent. The servers were also always quick and courteous. In Asian-food starved Columbia, places like Pho Viet could easily get away with serving subpar offerings; thankfully, this place tries its best to stay faithful to both culture and flavor. The only negative I can think of is that they don't offer basil leaves as part of their garnish plate but that's a trifling issue for most. Thanks for keeping it real! Prime restaurant location amidst the five point bars and college spots. Upon entering pho viet I was intrigued at the sight of the Asian cultural/landscape mural and the open green setting. Felt very open and inviting all at the same time. Additionally, the place had surprisingly great capacity and numerous seating option for all sizes of groups,family,small, and individual dinners. As I made my way inside I was welcome by one of the staff members and set to pick a table of my liking, I went with the booth with a wide view of the place. Soon after I sat down I was greeted by another waiter who took my drink order and let me brows through the menu. Service was prompt but had a hard time identifying staff members since they were not wearing any aprons or any distinct Pho Viet attire. Nonetheless, I placed my order for a (Pho Thai Chin Nam) Number 15 and the veggie spring rolls. The spring rolls were an absolute delight. Fried to golden crisp, clean, and uniform. The only concern was that they were a bit smaller than the usual size. The Pho came out in all its glory in a big open bowl with the meat and plenty of side garnish. I sampled every component of the pho individually starting from the broth then the meats followed by the noodles and the garnished veggies. The broth held a strong star anise aroma and trace of a light beef stock. The noodles were nice and firm and held well on length and flavor. The brisket and flank gave a fatty yet light addition to the pho...the garnishes on the other hand lacked freshness. The bean-sprouts had blackened a bit and gave an off taste, the coriander was a bit better but still had a few stems that seemed to have been kept out for a while. A bit of disappointment there but I enjoyed the rest of the pho with an added kick from the condiments on the table. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for its light yet flavorful phos and it's superb spring rolls. But I will drop a few points for the garnishes. read more

The food was great, from the fresh spring rolls, to pho with brisket and flank, to the taro tea (minus the boba). Customer service was not great, just ok. But food was quickly served. Food and price are reasonable for some good tasting Pho. Only knocked off one star due to my last visit. The pho was a little on the firm side as if the broth was having difficulty softening the noodles. Overall, the food and price are good. This place has the worst service I have ever been too. I placed my order and waited for 40 minutes. I had to leave. Now if this was during a very busy time, I would potentially understand. It wasn't. The worst part is another couple came in after me, ordered, got food ate and left. The group across from me. Ordered right when I sat down. Not only got their 3 meals, appetizers, regular drinks. But also their specialty drinks. I never in 40 minutes received my water. Even though I had to order it twice. All I got was my time was hangry and apologies. The last time the girl told me she was sorry and my food was on its way. I asked her if it was done or just being started. She came back and apologizes and said that were starting it right then. I'm mainly just grateful I'm even able to get pho in Columbia, but it's also pretty decent as far phos go. I like that I can get the version with tendon, ligament, and tripe, but the herbage served with the pho is kind of lacking. I like the shrimp spring rolls, but the lettuce that comes with the fried rolls usually seems old and wilted. I think their product is a bit fresher in general at the Decker location. I usually get excellent service except for one time when the only server was someone I'd never seen in my previous visits (I've eaten here around 30 times); she was terrible, fooling around on her phone at the front register the whole time, but I never saw her again, so they probably got rid of her. read more
