This Pho restaurant is in La Jolla San Diego a mile from UCSD campus, looked very clean , we ordered the Bún Bö Huê Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, chicken Pho noodles soup, and a beef sandwich. Overall I would say the soup Bún Bö Huê was very tasty and flavorful, delicious! the sandwich and the chicken noodle pho was tasteful too! They sirve it with a side of basil leaves and bean sprouts that add a lot of flavor. You can order spicier from 1-10 I order the level 4 it was great for me. Not to hot. Service was good, very attentive customer service. We did order the chicken pho soup to go and we realized we were missing the chili oil but they did put another red sauce there. Meh, I hate writing a bad review. This is purely for the pricing. I phoned in an order for spring rolls, which typically cost anywhere from $5-$8 (with 8 being really steep). If you guys have had amazing pho don't come here. If you have had mediocre pho don't come here. They don't have chili oil. The egg rolls don't have meat in them. The broth tasted so bland and flavorless we couldn't even finish it. The noodles were over cooked and we couldn't use chopsticks or a fork to eat them. Pho never disappoints on a rainy day, especially this one! When the pho was brought out i could tell it's richness and delicious flavor immediately by the amazing deep color of the broth. I was a little shocked that this place only has 3 stars. Not sure what all the negative reviews are about but in my opinion the food here is pretty good. The pho is amazing. There's so much flavor in the broth and meat. The portion was enough for me. I wish they offered it in a smaller size though. The staff here is like most other Pho places. They're trying to get everyone taken care of as quickly as possible. If you're upset about staff not smiling at you all the time, this isn't the place for you then. They're not being rude, it's just they're busy and trying to help out so many people. This place is doing a great job of making eating pho with outdoor dining the best experience possible. There are tables outside and the owner came out to check on us even though technically they aren't doing dining service, only to-go orders. Everything comes neatly packed in containers that are labeled and sealed. Ingredients are fresh. Soup broth is piping hot. Plenty of hoisin and hot sauce packets on the side. Pho La Jolla has been such a good spot over the years. Good service and tasty eats. This past visit was a bit of a shock that left much to be desired. Upon walking in, I was greeted promptly. Good start for sure. The dining area wasn't overly busy, maybe about a third of the tables were occupied. I was offered to sit anywhere open. Some of the tables weren't cleared from previous guests and left with dirty dishes or just visibly not wiped down. I grabbed a clean table and was given a menu. The menu was missing the page with pho options! Interesting being a pho restaurant. Luckily I already knew what I wanted, so didn't really need the menu, but never hurts in case there is something new on the menu to try. So I ordered my usual, pho tai (rare beef noodle soup) and a small order of egg rolls. As I was waiting for my food, I noticed some things that should NEVER happen in a restaurant. A server was clearing tables and stuck their fingers into the water cups. Their fingers noticeable touching the water inside the used cups. Eeewwww! This was done by more than one staff member. Another server sneezed in a service area and didn't cover his mouth. Spray went EVERYWHERE! He then wiped his nose and mouth with his hands and then proceeded to handle food service items without washing his hands. That was really gross! I was hoping and praying that he didn't bring out my food. Luckily he didn't, but he did bring out other items from the kitchen to other customers. I wanted to say something, but not sure how to approach this situation. As The same server was bringing out other food from the kitchen to customers, I noticed his fingers hanging into the bowls! I think this place is pretty hyped since it's really the only Vietnamese place outside of Convoy, and I haven't seen many restaurants selling VN food in the SD area in general. The man who owns this shop is incredibly sweet and attentive, but the food is a thumbs down for me. Disclaimer: it may be my fault for ordering vermicelli (or as the menu here calls it, "noodle salad") instead of pho. I ordered the noodle salad with grilled pork and egg rolls. Nothing wrong with the noodles or fish sauce, and I wish some different herbs and veggies (mint, perilla, bean sprouts?) were used instead of just lettuce, cucumber, and some pickled carrot and daikon. But I do have beef (haha) with the grilled pork, which tasted like a musty cha siu. I don't think the meat was old, but as a personal preference, I didn't like whatever marinade was used for the pork. The egg rolls were crispy on the outside but looked completely vegetarian to me, filled with some mix of glass noodles, mushy mung bean(?), and garlic. I also paid what I think are exorbitant prices for a bowl of bun thit nuong cha gio, a little over $13.50 excluding tip, which is even more than some vermicelli specialty restaurants in the SGV or OC. I noticed that the rest of the prices were pretty similar, kind of edging on a price point that I think is a bit too high to be considered reasonable for a run-of-the-mill Vietnamese restaurant. read more

I remember trying out this place for the first time about a year ago and thought it was pretty good back then. I got the Special Combination Pho with very uncommon cuts of beef like brisket, tendon and tripe, and recalled they had really thin and tender cuts of rare beef that would become medium rare when cooked which I thought was really hard to find in most places that served pho unless they were really good. Now going back again today, it seems like the overall standards have dropped and the pho is somewhat mediocre. The cuts of meats were hard to distinguish because they were tough and slightly overcooked. The slices of tripe were pretty small. The noodles were clumped together in a ball which made it a bit difficult to pull out individual strands of noodles. In addition, the prices have inevitably gone up so the dish no longer seems worth the price anymore. "No soup for you" This place has been cutting cost and quality over the years. They used to be a good place to go for a late dinner, but they "run out" of soup and key ingredients earlier and earlier lately. I think the staff does this so they can go home early. The place has become so cheap that they don't even have sauce dishes anymore. They told me to "use your plate". I even had to ask for water and they were too cheap to even put ice in it! It was hit and tasted like tap water from the faucet!
