Beef Brisket Pho - my go to!
    Sveta B.

Amazing food, service and overall ambiance! Although the exterior is not that appealing, once you walk in the gorgeous interior design and layout is very welcoming. Would recommend to anyone looking for a new place to try.

Coming to Calgary from an area with a large Vietnamese population, we were really excited to see so many Vietnamese restaurants and decided to try this one. We ordered bot chien to share, then mi xao gion, bun ca, bun thit, and pho tai bo vien (for me). The bot chien was really good, it was crispy and the sauce was perfect, my only complaint is that it was a little small. My pho was pretty good, the and the meatballs were tasty. I would have liked a little more vegetables to add in and the beef did not seem to be raw when it was put in the broth so it kind of felt overcooked, but overall I was satisfied with the dish. I had a small bite of the mi xao and it was very nice and crispy! The bun ca was very interesting and a dish I have never tasted before. It was pretty good and I would get it again. I probably would not get the bun thit again because when I had a bite of it, the mean was not grilled with the crispy charred bits that are the best part of thit nuong. Service is incredible, the person who took our order was polite and attentive and the robot that brought our food was pretty cool too! Overall a good experience.

Wakado Ramen was within walking distance from us, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is located on the first floor of a commercial complex with very little foot traffic, and to be honest, I was a little skeptical at first. Surprisingly, the ramen here was actually pretty good! We ordered the recommended two-person set and chose the Chili Goma Ramen, Tonkotsu Shio Ramen, and a plate of gyoza. I had the Chili Goma Ramen, and I was very satisfied with it. The strong, rich aroma of Sichuan peppercorn immediately reminded me of Sichuan Tan Tan Men, but it was blended with goma-style sesame sauce, which softened and balanced the flavor nicely. I thought that was a clever and enjoyable way to present the ramen. The broth was thick and rich, with a slightly bubbly texture on top and plenty of chopped scallions -- visually, always a good sign for the style of ramen I personally enjoy. The flavor was very good as well. The bamboo shoots were nicely marinated: soft, but still with a bit of crunch, turning into little bites of flavorful vegetables after a few chews. The soft-boiled egg was also well executed; I devoured it in one bite and was rewarded with a rich, flavorful mouthful. My only food-related complaint would probably be the noodle texture. The noodles were on the softer, looser side, closer to the texture of instant noodles that require boiling, rather than the firmer, chewier texture I usually prefer at ramen shops. I know some people may actually enjoy that softer noodle style, so I wouldn't say it was objectively bad, but for me, it was the one imperfection in an otherwise enjoyable bowl. The gyoza looked similar to frozen Ajinomoto-style gyoza, so I honestly didn't feel too excited to try it. Since gyoza isn't too difficult to make fresh, that left a bit of a question mark for me. My main complaint was the service. The restaurant only had two occupied tables at the time, but after we were given the menu, we still waited around 18 minutes without anyone checking back or explaining the meal sets. I eventually walked toward the server and finally caught their attention while the server was chatting with coworkers. The service also felt minimal throughout the meal, with items placed on the table without much communication. I understand most items were obvious, but even a simple "Here is your ****" would have felt much more welcoming than placing items on the table without saying anything. A little more attentiveness would have made the overall experience much better. Overall, the ramen itself was better than I expected, especially the Chili Goma Ramen, which I genuinely enjoyed. But the service experience and the gyoza made the visit feel less polished than it could have been.

It's easy to not even know it's there, if you are traversing the Plus 15's between the two buildings -- you need to sidestep through the doors of "First Alberta Place," and it will be sitting in the back corner: one wall a soup and sandwich counter, and one wall a Chinese buffet. There's nothing here to "wow" you: hand written information on the wall. A pretty limited selection of sandwich toppings. Not a lot of variety of soups day to day. Scowls. And most importantly, they take cash only (I've been burned by this at the register once or twice when I forgot). But you can get a pretty damn cheap lunch here. Seriously -- for the longest time, the large soup was two bucks (or maybe it was even less)? On days where I forgot my wallet and thought I'd starve to death, Apple bailed me out with their two dollar soup (that much change inevitably kicking around my desk and amongst my pocket lint). And you serve the soup yourself, so you can make it as "hearty" as you wish (to hell with the stragglers showing up late -- they can have broth). I was there a moment ago, and soup has gone up to $2.65. It was around $2.00 in 2006 when I started going. Not a bad increase, and still plenty cheap. BLT's were $3.95 today You get the idea: cheaper lunch than what you can brown bag.
