I really wasn't expecting much when I came here but I truly had the most mediocre experience. I had tempered my expectations as someone who makes a solid oxtail pho on the regular but man, this was bad. The broth was so salty that it bordered on inedible and the portion size was abysmally small. My boyfriend and I both got a large and still had to order extra noodles. At around $17 a bowl, you'd expect it to be at least palatable. The nail in the coffin for me was the service. There were no condiments on the table and we had to ask repeatedly for things that any intuitive server would have at the ready i.e. waters on the table, bean sprouts and other garnishes, napkins, utensils, etc. the worst part was that anytime we asked, the younger server was very curt in her response or would roll her eyes. I'm not sure what warranted that treatment but I saw that the few other tables they had occupied were having a similar experience. I would highly advise to stay away. read more

In the past few months I've been coming here frequently I really noticed the soup is not as beefy as it used to be. It's very watered down. The portions have gotten much more smaller. I would have to order a side of extra noodles with a large for the same portion as the large used to be. The servers who worked there have changed as well. The younger girl there is super rude. She wouldn't wait until you are finished ordering before running off and then I would have to wave her down again after to finish. I have stopped coming here but Saigon kitchen is closed for a month so I decided to try it again. And I was extremely disappointed my experience is just as horrible. read more

As others have said, it's not the greatest ph place, but seriously, it's in north Nanaimo. The service has always been fine in my experience. The cold rolls are good with the peanut sauce (which benefits greatly by the addition of a scoop from the chili oil jar). The regular beef broth ph is ok, but my favorite is the Bún bò Hu. It has a rich, spicy, lemongrass flavored broth and comes with sliced beef, beef balls, and tendon. I always substitute the ph style noodles for the round noodles that come standard with this dish. This place isn't great. It's not bad? But certainly nothing to write home about. It's by far the largest Pho Restaurant ive ever been into with seating for probably 100 people. That being said during lunch time there was only 10 people inside. I ordered the Pho Chay, which is a veggie pho. Came with 3 pieces of tofu, 3 or 4 slices of carrots, some broccoli, and one long piece of celery. I would expect a little more for a veggie pho. The broth (chicken based) is lacking some key elements that you find in most Pho soups. I would eat here again if i was hungry, pricing is reasonable for the overall size of the dishes. read more

For the price, this is as good as you could ever ask for. Service is always terrific, and the family that runs it clearly takes pride in their restaurant. Food tastes fresh and has great flavour and the restaurant is always clean with ample parking. We've been there three times as it's right up the road, and unfortunately it's never had more than a few tables seated. Hopefully this tucked-away secret gets more attention soon! read more

Perhaps the cleanest pho restaurant I've been to in BC! The food is fresh, the portions generous, and the prices reasonable. I had a bowl of pho which was chock full of beef, and tons of noodles. Go anywhere else if you appreciate good service. Every visit the service here gets worse and worse. After sitting for 5 minutes listening to staff chat and play on there phones we finally had a waitress show up with a menu which we ordered off right away before she disappeared for who knew how long. Which turned out to be forever. That was the last time a server came to our table. Other than the guy man that brought us our food. We could hear the serving staff chatting and laughing at the counter the whole time we were there, but not once did they even look around the corner to see if any of the 4 tables of customers were in need of service. I eventually got up and went to the counter to request a glass of water. It never showed up. And because of that we never got a chance to order our takeout for family members at home. This is not the first time we have had an experience as such at this restaurant, but is definitely the last. Unfortunately we will now be heading to their competitors even if they are out of the way. 5 stars for how fast the food came. 3 stars for food 0 stars for service. read more

I ordered 2 appys and a large #16 dinner...the appys arrived as ordered, at least for me...others quickly became perplexed, having ordered spring rolls. ..they could not comprehend why all the bloody things arrived on one plate, 1 billing line. I personally really like the pho here, it's clean, light, and come really fast, me and my boyfriend always choose to have a quick dinner there. However, I feel really disappointed what happened today, we normally will order some fried wings as side(it usually come half drumstick and half wings). But today when I got it, I felt shocked, there's 5 drumsticks and only one wings with it, I know every store will give customer half drumstick half wings and I used to work in kitchens too. But it's my first time seem a restaurant give me 1 wings with 5 drumsticks. When this restaurant first opened, they were great--not to mention conveniently located near where I live in North Nanaimo. However, over the years their food AND customer service has become worse and worse. What happened to your standards? Pho Boi doesn't even sell beef (ironically, considering people should have the option for beef in a Vietnamese restaurant) because they claim it's "too expensive". That shouldn't even be an excuse. I ordered bun tonight and I got 4 measly chunks of charred, greasy pork, 4 leaves of iceberg lettuce, a few slivers of carrot... no bean sprouts. The star on this rating is for the deep fried springrolls, because you can't go wrong on those.... right? Tasty as they are, the fish sauce they come with lacked chilies. Pho Boi is a solid choice for quality Pho. The broth has been consistently tasty with good complexity, generous portions, and ingredients always fresh. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. My one disclaimer: I have only ever ordered Pho, so for other menu items such as rice plates I can offer no guidance. I ordered two things as my take-out order, paid for it and waited for it to come. When the food was ready, no one called me or said anything - the food was just put on the counter by the cook or whomever and he left. You're supposed to go look at the bag and see if it's yours...super classy, huh? I grab the food and head out when I realize that the order isn't correct. I walk back to the counter and wait for someone to appear at the counter. I finally explain to them that one of the dishes wasn't what I had ordered (the main) and I was told that they can't do anything. Their reason for not switching out the wrong order is because they couldn't serve it out to another customer (eww!). I spent all this money on their food and they couldn't swap something out and give me the food I had originally ordered and thus make a customer happy? And on top of that, they said I'd have to re-order what I had originally asked for and PAY for the new dish. WOW! All I can say is this is the dumbest display of customer service I've ever seen. It's a poor way to run a business and it speaks to their level of professionalism and how much they value the opinions and feelings of their customer. I loved eating here and I always begged my boyfriend to come with me. Not anymore. I'd hate for him to experience the awful customer service that I experienced. read more

Easily the best pho in town. Upon entering the first thing that you see is a friendly server ready to seat you. Then you realize how clean the entire restaurant is, which really stands out as everything is clean and in place. All of the servers where happy to take our order and explain the dishes. The food came fast and was amazing. Everything tasted fresh and didn't last long on our table as it was quickly devoured by the family. Overall a great experience as the food was dast and tasty and a great value. Everyone ate till they were full and no more food was left on the table. The spring rolls were a favorite to everyone but I must say the pho is the best I've had in a long time. Can't wait to come back ! read more

we've been eating at this restaurant for a long time and really enjoy the soup so now, with covid 19 we've been ordering for take out. on jan 3rd, we wondered why our same order was more expensive. the person at the till advised that there is a 10% surcharge for take out now. (remember, this is for take out, not delivery) not sure why, as we are receiving everything they normally would have to give us if we were eating in the restaurant, we would require a bag and containers for our leftovers (which we always had) so there is no difference there, they do not supply customer service or cleaning of tables aside from writing up the invoice for us to pay and the cook brings out the bag to counter for us to pick up so i don't get it. also, to add insult, on the receipt, the surcharge is referred to as "covid 19 surcharge". we really try to support our local restaurants right now but this was not kosher. read more
