guys, i always try to keep an open mind about my reviews of places, but this pho place that i ate at today, which had either 4 or 5 stars on yelp....really is overrated! i left without even finishing my food and a bad taste in my mouth, that i had to wash it away with mcds ice coffee or else i wouldve felt really bad on my drve. i am giving it 2 stars and will justify it to the fullest! so looks like its the only pho place in sechelt bc. went it and place was more than half full at 130pm which usually is a good sign for a hole in the wall place. looks like the restaurant was born from an old house but whatever...i was there to eat! upon surveying the place, immediately noticed some empty tables with dirty dishes bowls cups and chopsticks strewn about. very nice lady with a smile greeted us and told us to wait a bit while she cleared tables, acted as the cashier, and even served the other tables. good for her for being a wonder woman though...! i give her full props. only problem was , she cleaned all the tables with the exact same cloth just going from table to table...ewww! entering the place , it had a pungent smell of something bad, like a wet dog or something and i was trying to figure out what.. anyways, we ordered lunch special...rice with choice of 2 toppings...we picked lemon grass chicken and viet pork rolls. next we ordered a pho of course...beef rib eye and meatballs....and tea for 2. soup came and then it hit me! the smell was the pho soup boiling in the back. with 1 look and smell, immediately i knew it was bad. ive eaten in a million pho places in vancouver and in vietnam, and it was clear to me that the broth in this place was not clean and clear. meaning not strained and the beef marrow not washed and double boiled, as well as the mushy stuff not skimmed off. it looked dark and murky and did not taste like pho at all! just some off beef soup. was so disappointed. only savings grace was meatballs and beef were tender. i was really hungry and did not wanna waste food so i still ate it until i had enough. the rice combo looked good when it came. but tasted the chicken and it was fried with a breading and pounded to thin that it resembled a pork chop. lol. no smell or hint of lemon grass at all. the viet pork roll looked like a veggie roll. only had a sprinkle of ground pork plus was so oily it stained the veggies ... why 2 stars? at least there is 1 pho place the server / cashier/ was trying her best! or else wouldve given 2. i would rather go to a&w! last but.not least, the chili sauce on table had no cover. just exposed to air for God knows how long. it wasnt just ours...each table was same! yuck! tasted it and spit it out. not fresh and had a funny taste. so unhappy that ive just eaten at the worst viet place in my life. :(

Have tried this place several times and been disappointed each time. The soup has never been up to par. Wouldn't recommend.

Review Highlights - Kien Giang Pho

The salad roll was fresh and delicious, Springroll light and flavorful, and the Pho soup was out of this world (I ordered #1).

We were pleasantly surprised with how good the food was here…read more We had just finished a backpacking trip in Garibaldi Provincial Park and decided to grab some food on our way back down to Vancouver. We parked on a side street nearby and snagged one of the few open tables - it was pretty busy the entire time we were there (on a Thursday ~2pm), with both small and larger groups coming in and out. Service was speedy and polite. FOOD // We got the grilled chicken pho and shrimp spring rolls. Both were yummy and satisfying after our hike - no complaints! Prices felt reasonable, considering the food quality and scarcity of other Vietnamese food options in the area. We'd definitely consider coming back here the next time we're in the area.

There was a line out the door at dinner time, so this must be a popular local place. We got the…read morefresh spring rolls, one with shrimp and one with tofu. Pictured is the "tofu" salad roll. It was not tofu, but some sort of salty meat substitute that did not taste anything like tofu. The only other ingredients in the salad rolls are shredded iceberg lettuce and vermicelli noodles. For $13.50, I would expect the rolls to contain some sort of herbs (basil and/or cilantro) and be overall higher quality. The shrimp was also unseasoned and overall the rolls were flavorless. Maybe the other food here is better, but the spring rolls are not worth getting.

An absolute gem in Nanaimo!…read more upon the recommendation of a very good buddy, on my way to tofino, i passed by nanaimo for a hearty lunch in this family owned Vietnamese restaurant. Staff and owner very hospitable and welcoming! never in my wildest imagination did i expect to find excellent Vietnamese food the city of Nanaimo. this restaurant puts many Vancouver restaurants to shame. Their level of dedication to their craft is admirable and impressive. For appys...We started with fried wontons and the beef roll. My on my, the wontons were crispy-liciously goood! They were not your typical chinese fried wontons...the wrapper is paper thin and had a yellowish colour. And its because they used the spring roll wrapper to make It, making it super extra crispy. The pork filling was hot and juicy. Seasoned perfextly With a touch of cumin. One bite, and you will be in wonton heaven. the beef roll was truly a unique masterpiece. Whoever thought of putting a friend spring roll inside a salad roll and enveloping it with grill beef is a total genius!! You get a plethora of different textures and flavour profiles. With every bite, you get crunchiness of the spring roll, smokiness of the grilled beef, green leafy vegetables, and juiciness of the pork filling...all rolled into 1 roll! How could you possibly go wrong? Its a masterpiece like that of the mona lisa! We also tried the beef curry. Succulent pieces of beef slowly simmered rich thai curry sauce, Complimented by soft jasmine rice. Not a vietnamese dish, but executed with perfection. Curry was rich and robust. Quality coconut Milk and curry paste was used. Now..unto the pho!!! the ultimate test of an excellent Vietnamese restaurant is the PHO. More specifically, the PHO Broth! the PHo here is nothing short of spectacular! You can tell bec of 3 important factors. One, the aroma. Two, the clarity of the soup ( aka i how clear is it). And three, the taste! ( how deep the beef essence is!) This place exceeded expectations and passed with full flying colours! One sip of the broth, reminded me of vietnam. It was absolutely amazing! Head and shoulders above many restaurants in vancouver. Plus, no msg was used. We never felt Thirsty or craving tea. I could tell there was a lot of time, labour, and love invested into making the broth. No shortcuts! Just sheer excellence from chef. I feel very blessed to have been a patron of such fine vietnamese cuisine. Definitely a must try when in the city of Nanaimo. Service was quick and efficient. Will i repeat? As many times as i can! ;) Cheers! Happy eating!
