Went on a busy Sunday, we got there early and got a seat quickly. The staff were nice but since it was busy they seemed stretched thin. We were expecting the food to be good since it seemed to popular. We got Tom Kha Gai, Pad Thai, and Pad see ew, which is a typical order for us at Thai places. We looked at the menu which was on the door & everything looked pretty numny. Walked I side & the smells were delicious! We were seated immediately & because the menu was on the door already knew what we wanted. In less than 5 minutes they were bringing the soups out, and then a few minutes later, a plate of fabulous colors Pad Tai & Prawns & he had Pineapple Curry with a salad & spring roll. Mediocre food. The pad thai was basically a pile of noodles with an overly sweet sauce and was barely edible. Even my 6 year old thought it was too sweet, and it's not often a 6 year old won't eat a pile of noodles. The service was also mediocre; they weren't mean, but they didn't seem exactly pleased to have us. On the plus side the actual space was quite nice. First impression? Walked in, and not another person here. I think the waitress/hostess was surprised they had a guest. I ordered the chicken maradum curry, with a medium spice, because I like some heat in my food but don't want to burn my face off. It came, decent portion size. First bite it was abundantly clear that they used absolutely zero spice, and not a pinch of salt had been used. The potatoes had been boiled and tossed into the sauce at the end, which then became a boiled potato with a bit of sauce on the outside. The chicken was cooked on its own without any salt or spices. Bland. The carrots were cut nicely, but barely cooked. The peanuts tossed on at the end had a waxy consistency. The one thing I can say with a positive is that the rice is cooked properly. Great place in the "Bistro" part of Nanaimo . The facade looks kind of bland from the outside but very bright in front part of restaurant due to old garage doors converted as large windows. In the back is a darker more intimate room split from the front by two steps and a line of artificial plants. The food is good and the portions are hearty. Average main entry is around 10.50, foreign beer,( they serve Tiger and tsing Tao ) is 6.00. Server was alert and well versed on the menu including explaining the spicy ness of some of the dishes. The place was half-full Pros -Service was friendly and attentive. -Appy sampler - quite filling with 4 types of apps -Tom ka gai soup - delicious and a bit of a spicy kick -Sukkothai noodles - delicious, must try! -Great place to take a date, the decor has an authentic thai feel to it. Cons -Whenever the door opens a chilling cold air draft comes in, they need a storm door. We had to move tables to stay warm. -$2.50 for a side of rice! I think rice should be free at all restaurants because it is a cheap product. I can buy a 1 kg bag of rice for $2.50 at Walmart. If you want to eat at Sukkothai, get here Monday -Saturday and well before the posted closing times. We tried to eat here twice. On our way to Tofino, we stopped by on a Sunday and they were closed. On our way back home from Tofino, we stopped in at 1:55 and were told that the kitchen was closed. (The sign says lunch hours are 11-2 - and there were still 4 or 5 tables of people eating.) I tried to appeal to the hostess' sense of compassion, telling her of my efforts to eat at this restaurant, but she was unmoved (and unapologetic). Though I was disappointed,we took our business down the street to The Modern Cafe and had a nice lunch. I'm sure they were happy to add our $40 to the till. read more

We were visiting for a few days and decided to meet up with my friend who lives in Nanaimo. She suggested Sukkhothai. We shared the chicken satay, egg rolls, pad thai, pineapple curry and a side of coconut rice. It was extremely delicious and we left very satisfied. The service was just okay; there was a bit of a language barrier, but our food came quickly (though our waitress kind of forgot about us once our food had arrived). Well, we are slowly working our way through Nanaimo's culinary offerings. Thought we would try this place. Very sadly disappointed. Very expensive for very low end Thai. None of it was authentic and every single dish had the exact same ingredients, with very slight flavour change. Tons of onions, red and green peppers and carrots in every dish, tiny pieces of skimpy portions of the meat. The green curry was super watery, not creamy like a good curry should be, and it was again, like all they had in the back wAs a huge bucket of onion, peppers and carrots in the kitchen that they grabbed a handful of and threw it in the dish. Wouldn't have been so bad if this was budget, cheap Thai, but the price really did not match the quality of food. We won't be going back. Amazing thai food! Sooo delicious! We shared 5 different dishes and loved every one of them. Cashew Beef was perfectly seasoned, thin slivers of beef and super fresh veggies, their namesake noodles are great for kids and full of flavor for all ages. The service was friendly and accommodating and even the after dinner mint chocolates were top quality. Wish we lived closer. I would do a family dinner here weekly! read more

food: the beef pineapple curry was my favorite. it's heavy on the coconut. very few pineapples and only a few chunks of beef. it had a lot of other veggies accompanying the curry. the phad thai was passable. not that flavorful. ***3/5 service: service was fast. i think they host a lot tourist people than they do locals. it was hard to get somebody's attention even though there werent that many tables. i tried to get the bill a few times and it was forgotten. ***3/5 value: after conversion from US, it's totally worthwhile. i am biased that i have been eating poor cruise food for the past few days. anything away from that is pretty good. the portions are a bit small, but it comes with a few things. ***4/5 read more

Had good reviews and thought it would be nice to try. Room is nice and I'm sure in the summer with the garage doors wide open it would be a great place to hang out with friends. We had the appetizer platter, which was all deep fried. Spring rolls were good but the tofu was burned and looked and tasted like cardboard, rest tasted like it was previously frozen from a box and probably was. I was in Nanaimo for a business trip and decided to get takeout for my ferry home. I ordered Pad Thai with chicken and found it really fresh, authentic and flavourful. They used tamarind instead of ketchup. I definitely will be back. Sure beats the same old stuff served on BC Ferry. LOL read more

Don't go! It is disgusting. Both my friend and I found hair pieces in our food. So we did not eat the rest of our food & when told the waiters about it, they only reduced $8 from our $100 bill! & They did not even apologize. DO NOT GO HERE FOR YOUR LUNCHBREAK. Had a full hour lunch break and the food did not arrive by 55 mins past the hour. Yes it was busy, but when other people start getting theirs before you when you 10-15 mins before them , makes you scratch your head. Also - not impressed with one staff member, the shorter Asian waitress ignored me for the last 20 minutes and walked longer paths to the kitchen just to avoid me, likely cause she knew I was wondering what was going on.
